In this fic, dual cultivation in the Cold Pond Cave contributes to the security of the Cloud Recesses, but it has to be done by powerful cultivators with a member of the main family. MY and LXC are married in this fic, but they are unable to use this method of boosting security because MY's cultivation level is not high enough. 11. Looking for a longfic I read a while back. The elements I remember are that the Lan figured out that WWX wasn't being properly compensated/treated as a head disciple of the Jiang and the deliberate stunting of his academic education was a violation of (handwavy) Jianghu high academia codes of conduct. As a result the Lan got WWX his backpay and the Jiang teachers got shunned by their academic peers. He let Lan Zhan remain in the belief that he had no memories of his life before, uncertain what it might do to Lan Zhan’s image of him if he knew how abhorrently selfish Wei Ying was being. He could not bear to lose this, the unquestioning welcome so readily offered He’d had Lan Zhan and the bunnies. He’d been happy. Rather incandescently so. And then the war came knocking, taking Lan Zhan away from him. For a week, then two, then a month, then almost two. With no definitive end in sight. It is unacceptable.

Sleep would not come to him any longer afterwards. Selfish. Unfilial. Disloyal. With his self-recriminations, his memories also returned in full. Memories of a childhood maybe not as carefree and protected as one might hope but certainly better than what he would have been afforded if Uncle Jiang had left him on the streets. jyl doesn't come up in fics enough for me to gauge how she's written during this time period, but let it be known that she openly speaks about jc's bad temper

the fact that I mostly read postcanon stuff or AUs is the reason for that, btw. I don't like, avoid reading about her. I just don't read much fic in this time period, at all. I just think it's all far too well-done to bother with fic. the closest I got was a few where wwx and lwj get together earlier and none of them are better than canon. also nobody seems interested in exploring her canon character during this arc, it's all 'badass clan leader jyl with zidian' and such

HE'S HUNGRY! this is maybe the first time THIS shorthand comes up, and jyl knows it! she doesn't immediately run off and get food, she stays with him and plays around and offers him comfort and affection in ways that are easy for him to accept. vulnerability and asking for affection is really hard for wwx given his personality, his interpersonal dynamics with others, and his status in the sect. but he knows he can tell his sister he's hungry and she'll play along with him and shower him in love. ough

I kind of wish they had left her response out...it looked like she know what was going on with lwj but this makes it look like she has no idea

REGARDLESS. regardless. wwx's reluctance to pursue his feelings or even acknowledge them is very in-line with his characterization, especially right now. this isn't a crush who's fun to tease anymore, it's about real, serious feelings that he's attempting to distance himself from because he knows he can't act on them. or looking at it another way, he's scared of getting further in because he values his freedom and connections with others brings with them obligations. so. final scene wwx leaving extremely important thematically and character-wise and shows tremendous growth on lwj's part, and wwx's excited reunion with lwj at the end shows that even after taking his freedom, he's still eager to start his life with lwj because he came to terms with loving him and is no longer afraid...

oh this was just so silly. jyl you goof. this is such big sister baby sibling joking around

this is also really funny. their banter here is SO good, god I truly get why ppl are obsessed with them. when they're not on the outs, they have a great dynamic and are on the same page about almost everything

literally one of the funniest scenes in the show, help

jc's casual acceptance of jgy's social status isn't really a surprise for anyone in his postion, but it is still kind of sad. even after being legitimized, jgy will only ever be lower than his half brother? this is something I wished was more present from the book. jc clearly judges people by their birth, but in the novel it'd explicitly clear that lwj doesn't. I don't think it came through very well tho

wwx himself was the son of a servant. how would jc have reacted if he wanted to marry a family member of the great sects? well, he does, but I mean. if you ignore everything else that makes that situation complicated...probably would never have accepted wwx leaving, and maybe would have been excited about the political benefits. MAYBE happy for wwx too, but doubtful. it takes him fully 20 years to get to a place where he can honestly wish him well

ok so here's my Wen Qing Falls In A Hole canon divergence au where wen qing falls into the cave at muxi mountain with the rest of the indoctrination disciples and things turn out much better

this happens because wen chao is tired of her doing things that help wei wuxian, so the rope she's climbing up "accidentally" gets cut and she falls back into the cave

(wen ruohan will not be happy about this but will ultimately excuse it because it is his son)

everyone is like "ra ra we have a prisoner" except wwx and jc (and lwj by merit of being largely Stoic about it but also he sees that wwx trusts her and hes willing to follow his lead on this)

mianmian hesitantly puts herself in with the two of them because a) wwx just got fucking branded on her behalf, and b) she met wq at lectures as well and while they werent friends or any she seemed nice enough, for a wen. shes a doctor and helped jyl out after all.

jin zixuan is Unenthused but pulls back from the discussion because he trusts mianmian's judgement

wq is tired of this discussion and says "listen im not gonna do jack shit, call me your prisoner all you want, can we deal with the giant murderous tortoise in the room first? also lwj let me look at your leg ive been itching to get my hands on it for days"

wq looks at lwj's leg and wwx's injuries. no one else asks for her help and she doesnt offer it but mianmian does quietly thank her.

everyone else is sufficiently diverted away from the prisoner idea because jc looks like hes about to start biting people

they still need to deal with the giant murderous tortoise in the room

it goes similarly to how it does in canon, except:

no one is particularly interested in helping her leave the cave (she fell down a cliff, shes definitely injured and would need help) except for the noted people above, but jc, as the jiang heir, is the best person to lead them out through the underwater tunnel and get help, so when theyre separated from the main pack wq and wwx haul lwj into the little side cave

she tends to their wounds and helps them strategize how to kill it, sees the weird romantic tension, and goes to another corner to pointedly not touch that with a ten foot pole. she does let out the BIGGEST sigh when she hears wwx say "aaaah you like mianmian dont youuuu"

eventually they mcmurder the tortoise.

wq helps tend to their wounds and pokes at the sword a little bit and Does Not Like how much it reminds her of the yin iron wrh has. lwj frets.

wq does not care about his fretting. she is tired. she is stressed. she is hungry. she fell down a cliff earlier. her family might be in danger because shes no longer covering for them in nightless city.

blah blah time passes, jiang cheng rescues them, and then, bless his heart, he invites her to come back to lotus pier with them

fuck it. its not like she has other options. she cant go back because wen chao will accuse her of treason bcuz she could only have survived by helping the others, and that would definitely get her and her family killed.

besides, wei wuxian is still passed out and clutching The Sword and she thinks maybe its better to keep an eye on that.

flash forward to them being at lotus pier

maybe she made a wrong choice. madam yu is like. the fucking worst, and wq served under wen ruohan.

despite yzy's general lack of hospitality towards a wen, she warns the jiangs that wrh will probably make an attack on lotus pier. when yzy attempts to blame wwx (having heard what happened from the jiang disciples that came back with jc), wq very neatly cuts in to say that it was always part of the plan, along with the attack on the unclean realm and the burning of cloud recesses.

jiang cheng is hopelessly attracted to her. not that he wasn't before but like. hes absolutely reorienting all of his standards as she speaks.

jiang yanli is delighted by her presence and has inducted her into the long-suffering older siblings club and reassures her that wen ning and her family are probably fine. she finds every scrap of intel she can to give to wq.

The Attack On Lotus Pier

when sect leader yao shows up, jiang fengmian, heeding wq's warning (which yzy begrudgingly accepts because preparation cant hurt, at least), chooses not to escort him this time. he sends him to lanling a few disciples and instructs them to keep a low profile on their journey.

he is there when wang lingjiao storms in with the kite and tries to punish wwx.

he refuses to punish wwx the way wlj asks, trying to deflect to something else, which makes yzy angry. they argue until wlj makes a comment about unhappy marriages and says "itll be better here once we take over" and yzy turns the full force of her concentrated rage on the little upstart who thinks she can tell a meishan yu what to do.

the flare still goes off, summoning the rest of the wen forces, but with both jfm and yzy present, wwx not injured, and the preparations done because of wq's warning, they succeed in their defense

i think jfm and/or yzy should lose their core to wzl though. spice things up. jc and wwx get to keep theirs.

wen zhuliu fucking dies tho

"what about wen ning?" you ask. "and the dafan wens?"

after wq disappeared, wrh had no use for wn and sent him off with the rest of the forces - luckily, with the group sent to lotus pier. wn isnt a strong fighter, but is a decent archer and has some medical knowledge as a dafan wen.

the dafan wens are left to their own devices because theres no point in killing them to punish someone presumed dead, and at this point wrh still recognizes the tactical advantage of a family of doctors under his control. thus, theyre basically back to being treated as normal wen civilians, which i have no doubt is still bad, but they arent all being murdered indiscriminately

anyways when the attack on lotus pier happens, wn is among the attacking force, but slips away because he likes wwx and jc. he doesnt want to be here even more than his usual level of "i dont want to be here"

he still helps the wounded, though, but he doesnt distinguish between wen and jiang. he's helping a jiang disciple after the battle is over when a group of jiang disciples find him.

they bring him in with other prisoners and wq (who had been shoved in a room with jyl when fighting broke out) sees him pass by and attempts to yoink him from the lineup. jyl has to convince the disciples to let her take the two of them.

realizations are had, wen ning is brought to the main hall, explanations are made, joyful reunions abound

from there its all canon divergence. the sunshot campaign happens. wwx may or may not invent demonic cultivation, but it's by studying The Sword and how wrh's puppets work. wq agrees to aid the sunshot campaign but its conditional on getting the dafan wens to safety before wrh realizes she's alive.

she also stops a lot of stupidity and angst amongst the main characters by merit of not being afraid to smack them when they're being difficult. she, jyl, and lxc become besties, and she cottons on to jgy's weird vibes, which will prevent yet another cascade of bullshit cause and effect.

in conclusion:

“What are they doing,” Jiang Cheng said, voice strangled, eyes staring.

Nie Huaisang stood up on his toes and squinted over his new friend’s shoulder. “Fighting?”

It looked like fighting.

“No.”

Not fighting? In that case, at least by Nie sect standards, that meant –

“Flirting?”

Jiang Cheng growled, which meant Nie Huaisang’s guess was right. “I’m going to kill the rotten bastard in white! I bet he waited until Wei Wuxian was alone just for this. How dare he take advantage of my – of Wei Wuxian!”

“I mean, I don’t know about that? They seem about tied,” Nie Huaisang said, making a mental note – not that many people could match up against Lan Wangji, especially when he was in a you-are-breaking-the-rules sort of snit. “Each one’s giving as good as the other gets, if you know what I mean…I’m talking about fighting!” He added hastily, seeing Jiang Cheng’s expression. “Just the fighting! And hey, maybe the Lan sect doesn’t flirt through fighting?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Jiang Cheng said. “All cultivation sects flirt through fighting.”

Damnit, Nie Huaisang thought to himself with a sigh. That means I’m going to have to train with saber after all if I’m going to get somewhere here, doesn’t it? Well, at least da-ge will be pleased…

“Are you going to interrupt?” he asked, hiding his face behind his fan. “If fighting is flirting…”

As expected, Jiang Cheng choked. “Not all fighting is flirting!” he hissed. “But that most certainly is!”

Nie Huaisang didn’t understand fighting, so he just shrugged.

“Why don’t you confront him later?” he suggested, but Jiang Cheng shook his head, his features already settling into a mulish expression that had no right to look as attractive as it was. “All right, I see I can’t convince you. Good luck defending your brother’s honor, then?”

“If Lan Wangji doesn’t stop flirting with Wei Wuxian in class, I’m going to do something violent,” Jiang Cheng said.

“Okay, now I know you’re delusional,” Nie Huaisang said. “But still very pretty. Oh, I’m torn…actually no, I think I’m fine. I mean, what cultivator do I know that isn’t a bit delusional?”

“Can you stop talking nonsense and focus on how we’re going to split them up?” Jiang Cheng demanded irritably. Really, it was no wonder that Nie Huaisang’s best attempts at flirting were going nowhere. Jiang Cheng was thick.

In many appealing ways. Mm.

Damn his bad taste.

“Well, I think first you have to start by reversing your statement until it resembles the truth a bit more,” Nie Huaisang said, trying to be practical. “It’s Wei-xiong that’s flirting with Lan-er-gongzi, not the other way around.”

“He’s just like that!”

“A giant flirt, you mean?”

“Sociable,” Jiang Cheng insisted with the sort of blindly loyal stubbornness that was sadly very, very appealing to those surnamed Nie. Mouthwatering, even.

“Right,” Nie Huaisang said, dabbing at his mouth with his sleeve to make sure he wasn’t drooling. “I see. All right, I’ll help you. I’ll even promise to find a way to break them up for good, guaranteed – but first you have to meet one condition.”

Jiang Cheng arched his eyebrows, looking unwillingly intrigued. “Name it.”

“You have to come up with one way in which Lan-er-gongzi has been flirting with Wei Wuxian that isn’t ‘he existed being pretty in his general direction’.”

Jiang Cheng opened his mouth.

Nie Huaisang waited.

“…maybe he should consider being less pretty,” Jiang Cheng grumbled.

Nie Huaisang patted him on the shoulder, then left his hand on his shoulder because why not.

“We’ve all thought that about him over the years,” he said. “Better luck next time.”

“You’re supposed to be helping me preserve my brother’s honor!” Jiang Cheng hissed at Nie Huaisang, who had made absolutely no promises of that sort without giant loopholes that he could walk right out of. “Not – encouragingthis!”

“I didn’t! I just helped Wei-gongzi play a tiny little prank –”

“With pornography!”

“Tasteful erotic art,” Nie Huaisang corrected.

“With cutsleeve pornography!”

“Cutsleeve tasteful erotic art.”

“Nie Huaisang! You’re missing the point!”

“Am I?” Nie Huaisang asked thoughtfully, tapping his fan against his lips. “I don’t know, I’m not sure I am. Can you explain what the point is again?”

Jiang Cheng threw his hands up into the air. “Listen, it was bad enough when Wei Wuxian got thrown out of Teacher Lan’s classes and had to go copy rules in the Library Pavilion for a month; that’s disgraceful and loses face for our sect, but at least his personal honor was preserved –”

Bad scholarship was, in fact, not an impediment to having personal honor. Nie Huaisang knew this fact forwards, backwards, and intimately.

“But then Teacher Lan fell for Lan Wangji’s tricks and decided to assign him to supervise copying –”

“Lan-er-gongzi has tricks? That’s news to me.”

“…well, either way, they got cooped up there in that room, together, alone, for – for weeks!”

“Hasn’t Lan-er-gongzi been using the muting spell on Wei-xiong most of that time?”

“No, eventually Wei Wuxian learned his lesson and now he shuts himself up whenever he sees him starting up the spell, he complains to me and shijie about it constantly every night,” Jiang Cheng said, grumbling. “Stop interrupting me!”

“Sorry. Go ahead.”

“Anyway, if that wasn’t enough, you’re now encouragingthis debacle by setting up a prank that involves Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and cutsleeve pornography.”

“I did,” Nie Huaisang agreed. “And it’s tasteful erotic art, Jiang-xiong.”

“Why do you keep insisting on that?” Jiang Cheng snapped. “Isn’t it the same thing?”

“No,” Nie Huaisang said patiently. “Because I also have pornography, and it’s a lot less tasteful.”

Jiang Cheng stopped, utterly distracted from his previous rant. “...you do?”

“Mm. Want to see?”

“Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan, wait for me, I want to talk to you – I need you! See, for whatever reason, I can’t find Jiang Cheng anywhere. Can you help me look –”

Nie Huaisang shut his window before Jiang Cheng could overhear and get distracted.

“All right,” Nie Huaisang said. “I admit it, you’re right.”

Jiang Cheng looked at him. “…you do?”

“I do.”

“Right about…what?”

“About the flirting, and Lan Wangji having tricks,” Nie Huaisang said, nodding wisely. “See, the Lan sect take their rules about their forehead ribbons very seriously. It’s parents, children, and lovers only. So if you ran into Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji entangled on the path near the back mountain, both of them soaking wet, with Lan Wangji’s forehead ribbon wrapped around their wrists…why, that’s practically an elopement!”

Jiang Cheng, predictably, turned purple. “He eloped with my – I’m going to kill him!”

“Have fun with that,” Nie Huaisang said happily, and watched as Jiang Cheng drew his sword and charged, shouting something.

Wei Wuxian attempted to defend their conduct, except apparently their conduct involved finding the ghost of a Lan sect ancestor –

“Did you bow?” Nie Huaisang asked, very unhelpfully. “Both of you? So you’d say you’ve made your bows to the older generation? Have you bowed to heaven and earth yet, too?”

Lan Wangji gave him a death glare, but maybe he should have thought of that before writing to Nie Huaisang’s brother disclosing details about Nie Huaisang’s love life.

“I’m going to kill you!” Jiang Cheng roared.

Nie Huaisang smiled over his fan at Lan Wangji and gave a jaunty little wave.

A few days earlier

“Wait, so, you’re actually together?” Nie Huaisang asked, and Lan Wangji nodded. They were having tea together the way they always did at the middle of the week, a tradition started long ago when their brothers were visiting and being utterly intolerable. Even their long-standing fight with each other would be put aside for mid-week tea. “Well done!”

Lan Wangji’s ears turned a little red. “Mm.” After a few moments, he added, “Mm.”

“No, no, I don’t think you need to worry,” Nie Huaisang said. “He may seem flighty, but he’s very loyal…the Jiang sect might object, though. They can be a bit tetchy about these things.”

Arched eyebrows.

“What do you mean, how would I know? Have you somehow missedthat I’ve been trying to snag Jiang Cheng all summer? There are more things in this world than Wei Wuxian’s waistline, shapely as it may be.”

Eyes narrowing.

“…don’t you dare tell my brother!”

A smirk, not that anyone else – excluding Lan Xichen – would know.

“I don’t care about your ‘appropriate conduct’! If you tell my brother that I’m dating instead of studying, I’ll find a way to make your life miserable, too! Just you wait!”

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 19, part two

The Man Comes Around

Over at the Wen Indoctrination Tower, which seems to exist just to torture Lan Wangji with stair climbing, Lan Wangji is climbing the stairs. Too bad his cultivation level is too low to be able to just jump up. At least this time his leg isn't broken.

This is the first vengeful stair-climb in the show, but not the last. (Parallel gifset here).

The Wen guards are stationed all the way at the pinnacle of this tower to guard...what? Why are they not at the bottom of the stairs? What is this location for, actually? This is further up the stairs than the scenes with the indoctrination lectures. Anyway, it's been three months since Wen Chao threw Wei Wuxian into the burial mounds, so naturally these guards are talking about that exact thing as Lan Wangji approaches.

Lan Wangji knocks them all down with a blast from his guqin. Did you know his guqin is named Wangji, by the way? It is. A guy who is that lazy about naming his quqin maybe shouldn't feel so superior to a guy who named his sword "whatever." 

(I'm suddenly remembering a plush lamb I had as a child, whose eyes were orange, that I named "orange eyes.") (I, however, was three. And I had a lot of plush lambs. Little ones. Grown-ups found it hilarious to give them to me.) (Native speakers of English can probably guess what OP's real name is. Hint: it rhymes with Canary.) (Everybody else: there is a kid's rhyming song called Mary Had A Little Lamb. OP's name is Mary.)

Anyhoo, after Lan Wangji is finally finished with his dramatic entrance, Jiang Cheng comes flying in from wherever he's been hovering for the past 20 minutes of stair time. A bunch of Lan sidekicks also flood into the frame from wherever they were hiding during the wide shots of LWJ on the staircase.

He uses the patented Lan string attack to choke this guard.  Lan Wangji doesn't have to hold a guqin string in his hands to choke someone with it. He doesn't even have to tighten it, judging by how absurdly not-tight this string is.

Or maybe this guy is choking on the chin strap of his helmet. This is exactly how OP's son reacts when OP sticks a bike helmet on him. (Note: it's GOOD that they are following choking safety protocols on set. Very good. However, they could have just left the string out and pretended, and it would look better, in this instance)

The Wen guard tells Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng about the whole "thrown into the burial mounds" thing.  Team Let's Find Wei Wuxian is not happy to hear this.

A Vengeful Ghost

Meanwhile, in some Wen office somewhere? Where the hell is this? Yiling, we get an ominous shot of the rooftops where Wei Wuxian is lurking and then we see Wang Lingjiao trying to sleep and having a nightmare.

Wang Lingjiao has gone to sleep with a full face of makeup on instead of washing her face before bed. She has forgotten the important maxim, Go To Sleep Pretty, Wake Up Zitty.

She leaps out of bed to go cling to Wen Chao and freak out about Wei Wuxian's ghost. Wen Chao is trying to read the sports section and has clearly had enough of this crap. This has presumably been going on for a little while now.

Wang Lingjiao is in a new outfit, which is...pajamas? It has the feel of a 1930's French peignoir set, and it's much more softly colored than her usual bright red-purple combo. If this is her pajamas is it weird that her day clothes are a lot more aggressively sexy-looking than her nightgown? A freak in the streets but a lady in the sheets.

Wen Chao rants about the Sunshot Campaign and talks some smack about Wen Qing, and then leaves to go to the bar and watch the game with Wen Zhuliu. After he leaves Wang Lingjiao freaks out for a bit and then looks at the notice he was reading.

The notice basically says that the Sunshot Campaign is kicking their ass. She should be proud for inspiring the name of the campaign with that kite-shooting bullshit she made up at Lotus Pier. Before slaughtering everyone.

No Matter What You Do, I Only Want To Be With You

Back at the Indoctrination Tower, Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng are having feelings about Wei Wuxian. Jiang Chang does all the talking but Lan Wangji's thoughts are louder because a sad violin is playing Wangxian while they talk.

Jiang Cheng tells Lan Wangji about their meetup plan and says he thought WWX had dumped him to go find Lan Wangji in Lanling. Lan Wangji telepathically indicates that this didn’t happen. This means two things: 1. Lan Wangji has been hanging out in Lanling, where Jiang Yanli has been hanging out, so maybe they have bonded over the past 3 months and 2. This is the first time Jiang Cheng has talked to Lan Wangji since Wei Wuxian disappeared. 

Much as my fic-loving heart would like to believe these two spent three months on the road together looking for Wei Wuxian, in fact they are both important high-level fighters in an active military campaign, and Lan Wangji was busy taking back the Cloud Recesses while Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were having elective surgery. They probably both were assigned to the "Indoctrination Bureau" mission and this is the first chance they've had to talk about Wei Wuxian.

Is it heartbreaking that, while Wei Wuxian was helplessly getting his ass beat because he'd sacrificed his golden core for Jiang Cheng, Jiang Cheng believed Wei Wuxian had abandoned him for Lan Wangji? Yes. Yes it is.

For some reason Jiang Cheng is hesitant to believe that Wei Wuxian really was thrown into the Burial Mounds. I mean, I understand not wanting to believe Wei Wuxian is dead, but given that Wen Chao is the dude who oversaw the massacre of all of the people at Lotus Pier, including kids, why would Jiang Cheng think his guards are wrong? Maybe he just feels like Wei Wuxian is invincible, since so far he kinda has been. 

The Sword is Mightier Than Not Having a Sword

While they've been chatting, the Lan disciples have found their swords. One disciple is holding Bichen (LWJ's sword), Sandu (JC's sword), and OP consults wiki Suihua (Jin Zixuan's sword). Another disciple is holding Subian (WWX's sword).  

Jiang Cheng grabs Sandu while the Lan disciples, who apparently know their gongzi’s heart, offer Wei Wuxian's sword to Lan Wangji. 

Lan Wangji takes Subian (Bichen: What am I, chopped watercress?) and immediately tries to draw it. Like you don't do. It's sealed itself, which apparently means that it's upset. It's unclear if it's upset because Wei Wuxian is dead or if it just misses him, however.  

Lan Wangji definitely misses him, and wonders, out loud inside his own head, where Wei Wuxian is. Um, he's in the Burial Mounds, dude, they just told you. Well, I guess he's actually in Yiling proper at this point, haunting Wang Lingjiao as he promised her he would.

Twa Corbies

The scene shifts to Qinghe, where there are about 12 dead bodies lying around, which in this show means that there are really a few hundred. In fact, per Jiang Yanli's statement "nothing can be seen but corpses covering the plains." The camera can't see most of them, is all.

Wen Xu's head is hanging in the doorway, and the Jins talk about how Nie Mingjue killed him, cutting his head off with just one swing. Is this foreshadowing anything, like perhaps someone else's head being cut off by Baxia in just one swing? Nope, definitely not.

A couple of crows are perched on a body, totally not eating it, but Jin Zixuan gallantly zaps them with a talisman to make them fly away anyway.  It might be noteworthy that nobody used to use talismans but gradually more and more people are using them - particularly people who have spent time with Wei Wuxian.

Asshole cousin Jin Zixun says “scavenger rights,” so Jin Zixuan puts him in charge of collecting all the bodies.

A Romantic Corpse-Filled Interlude

Disaster het Jin Zixuan goes to help Jiang Yanli get out of the carriage but she rejects his hand just like he rejected hers back in Gusu.

Jiang Yanli is extremely shocked when she sees Wen Xu's severed head, and turns away in horror, preferring to calmly rest her eyes on dozens of crow-pecked corpses.

Jin Zixuan tries to comfort her and she tells him she'll be going now, thanks for the hospitality. He tries to say that he has to personally deliver her to a representative of the patriarchy one of her brothers, but then one of her brothers shows up.

Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng arrive, having presumably flown there from Qishan. They show that they are flying by blowing a fan on the ground and then jumping off of a box, which is better than the effects we were subjected to earlier in the episode.

Jiang Cheng rushes over to have an emotional reunion with Jiang Yanli, while Lan Wangji rushes over to have an emotional reunion with Wen Xu’s severed head. Jin Zixuan kind of spoils it for him by talking about Wei Wuxian's absence while Lan Wangji is trying to have a moment.

The whole time Jin Zixuan is talking to him, Lan Wangji appears to be gazing into the middle distance but in fact he is staring at Wen Xu's severed head. This is the guy who led the burning of Cloud Recesses, killed a bunch of disciples, and personally broke Lan Wangji's leg. Lan Wangji stares at his head for more than a full minute before glancing away.

Jiang Yanli hasn't seen Jiang Cheng since they were in Wen Qing's clinic, and she is happy he's recovered. When she asks about Wei Wuxian he gives her the bad news in the classic Jiang fashion, which is to say nothing, but look stricken until your interlocutor figures out that something is horribly wrong, but not precisely what.

Four Angry Men

Inside the fortress, Nie Mingjue is slapping the table and saying, this bad boy can hold so much resentment and vengeance. They're having a mini war council and we're getting a better sense of Nie Mingjue's anger management problem. Note for those who don't get the gif reference: this is a The Godfather joke, not a sex joke, but it can be both, if you like.

We're also getting a little more info about Baxia, who seems to be eager to go fight even without anyone wielding it. (Her? Him? Them? do swords have gender? I don't know). Well done, person below the camera frame whose job is to rattle Baxia in a menacing manner.

They've got a giant model of the battle targets, which looks like it was carved out of real rock (I mean, as much as any of the rocks on this show look like real rocks) and has its own table and everything, decorated in Nie colors. Where was this before they took Qinghe back? Has Nie Mingjue been traveling with it? 

Anyway, I'm assuming Nie Huaisang made it, because it's pretty nice. Hopefully they will keep it around for tabletop gaming after the war is over.

Jiang Cheng is upset but is using his anger management mantra to help control his temper while Jin Zixuan and Lan Wangji talk with Nie Mingjue. 

Lan Wangji talks by leaning forward meaningfully, mostly not by using any words, but he asks for a battle assignment and Jiang Cheng immediately joins in. They both want to go find Wei Wuxian. 

Nie Mingjue says Yiling is too difficult of a target, but Lan Wangji puts on his determined face, which is apparently very persuasive.  

After Team Find Wei Wuxian leaves, Nie Mingjue asks Jin Zixuan to hang back so he can ask him how Meng Yao is doing. This is the first time he finds out that his ex didn't go to Lanling. Jin Zixuan tries to delicately remind him that Dad's got, like, SO many bastard children, they really don't have space for all of them. Nie Mingjue dismisses him immediately and abruptly. 

Nie Mingjue might invite the straights to his party but he isn't interested in actually socializing with them.

Unconditional Soup is Only for A-Xian

Jiang Cheng can't sleep, and takes some time, now, to be sad about Wei Wuxian. Presumably he spent the prior 3 months being mad, not sad, because he really thought he just buggered off without saying anything for all that time. Which is sort of fair, but sort of not. One thing about these two bros is that for as close as they have been and as much as they love each other, their mutual understanding has some big, messy gaps.

Fortunately while he is feeling sad, Jiang Cheng does not try to draw Subian from its sheath, because wouldn't THAT be awkward.

Jiang Yanli can't sleep either, and comes to sit with him. Jiang Cheng feels bad that she's wearing herself out with worry and she says "As your sister, I have nothing to do but to worry about you." Jiang Yanli isn't one to complain but she doesn't like being inactive or helpless. In Lanling she was far from the war, but now that she's in Qinghe she'll make herself useful by tending the wounded, and later she'll help Jiang Cheng shoulder his responsibilities as he takes over the Jiang clan.

At the moment, however, all she can do is fret and make soup. As she gives Jiang Cheng a bowlful she reminds him that he absolutely has to rescue their brother who has, according to his captors, been reduced to bone dust.

With all the impossible shit that Jiang Cheng is expected to achieve - and in many instances, does achieve - he is absolutely the embodiment of the Jiang Clan's motto. Fuck his father for disrespecting him because he hadn't figured out how to do everything by the age of 16.

Definitely Not Chilling in Yiling

Back in Yiling, Wen Chao is hearing the news that the Qishan Indoctrination Bureau has fallen and that he's being called back to Nightless City. Wen Chao says he shouldn't need to go back because his dad has a new right-hand man. That new right-hand man, we will eventually learn, is Meng Yao. Wang Lingjiao, meanwhile, is hiding under the bed covers and deciding it's time to dump Wen Chao.

She locks the door and goes to pull out her jewelry box, which is locked and hidden under the bed. Maybe this is Wen Chao's jewelry box, because she acts kind of squirrely about opening it. Upon opening the jewelry box, she doesn't find jewelry but a pair of bloody fake eyeballs staring at her.  She screams and freaks out and then the wind picks up and we hear the sound of a flute, playing the "I'm here to fuck your shit up" tune that Wei Wuxian likes.

Wang Lingjiao runs to the door and pulls down the protection talisman that's pasted above it, and pastes it directly to her chest instead, which is, we will learn in the next episode, the worst idea she could possibly have at this point.

Then she uses a poking stick to go flip the jewelry box open and finds it's full of ugly-ass jewelry again, plus an improbable number of weird round paper-mache biscuits that have been painted gold. None of this jewelry looks anything like the exquisite accessories people wear in this show, which means this stash was put together by the practical effects department, not by the costume department.

Anyway, Wang Lingjiao apparently thinks she can sell this fakeass stuff for a good price, so more power to her. But then we get a short glimpse of the menacing eyeballs again, this time on the floor, having moved out of the box and brought their little blood pool with them. Screeching ensues.

I looked through the chapters with the incidents you mentioned in this post, @crossdressingdeath. Brace yourself, it will be a long post.

First, "the one time [JYL] claims WWX as family (something which as far as I recall she does at no point before or after, certainly not where other people might hear) is also the one time where not doing so might negatively affect her".

She says it three times during that scene. The first two are in relation to her demand for Jin Zixun to apologize.

"A-Xian is a disciple of the YunmengJiang Sect. He grew up with my brother and I, and so he’s as close as a brother is to me. Calling him the ‘son of a servant’—I’m sorry, but I won’t accept this."

...

Jiang YanLi’s voice was soft, “Madam, A-Xian is my younger brother. Him being humiliated by others, to me, isn’t just a small matter.”

The third time:

Madam Jin raised her brows, looking Wei WuXian up and down. Her gaze was somewhat cautious, as if she was feeling displeased, “A young man and a young woman—you two can’t stick together all the time if nobody else is present.”

Jiang YanLi, “A-Xian is my younger brother.”

To me, this last one sounds like a politely incredulous, "I just told you he's my brother and you're still insisting on this?" It's not a "no-no-no, it's not like that!", it's a "are you being serious right now?"

You are right in that she never does it before or after, but in this particular scene it's not about saving face.

You are also right in that she drops her demand for an apology, but JZxun literally stormed away, and then there was the Epic Confession from JZX and things got derailed. Did it seem like sweeping things under the rug at WWX's expense? Well, yes. But also, would it have done him any favors if she kept at it? I really don't know. It could've made things better, it could've made them worse.

Then, "stealing food from a guy who grew up STARVING ON THE STREETS even though JC had almost certainly already eaten".

“Fooling around again! Your sect leader, I, has already poured you a bowl and put it outside. Kneel for me to express your gratitude and go drink your soup outside.”

Wei WuXian skipped outside before he turned around and came back, “What do you mean by this, Jiang Cheng? Where’s the meat?”

Jiang Cheng, “Finished it. There’s only lotus roots left. Don’t eat them if you don’t want to.”

Wei WuXian attacked with his elbow, “Spit out the meat!”

Jiang Cheng, “No objections. I’ll spit them out and let’s see if you’ll eat them!”

Seeing that they started to argue again, Jiang YanLi quickly interrupted, “Okay, okay. How old are you two, fighting over some meat? I’ll just make another jar…”

WWX doesn't generally seem food-conscious. This is reiterated later on in this chapter when the narrative mentions that when he first came to Lotus Pier, he was careful not to take too much or draw too much attention because he was afraid to be judged a burden. It's possible to read it as a confirmation: see, the soup incident several paragraphs earlier was serious for WWX even though neither JC nor JYL realized it. But I'm reading this in the opposite way: WWX used to be like that but not anymore. I also can't help but remember Xie Lian eating a steamed bun he picked up from the ground and saying that it's edible, it's still good, why waste food? We never see stuff like that from WWX.

JYL here doesn't take JC's side. In fact, she doesn't take anyone's side, she just wants them to stop bickering. Again, it's possible to say that JC is in the wrong here and WWX is in the right, so her not taking a side means silent agreement with JC. But really, I just don't think it's that serious.

A few chapters later, during LWJ's visit to the Burial Mounds, Wen Qing carelessly sweeps away WWX's things to clear a seat for LWJ. WWX goes, "Hey!", and Wen Qing also doesn't take him seriously. But no one tries to point at her and go, "See, she doesn't respect WWX, and she never apologizes for that." It's banter. Later on, it stops being banter between WWX and JC, but at this point, it's just shenanigans.

Then, the incident with the dogs and the tree:

Seeing how worried he seemed, Wei WuXian took the initiative, “Relax. I won’t tell Uncle Jiang. I only hurt myself because I suddenly wanted to climb a tree last night.”

Hearing this, Jiang Cheng sighed in relief. He swore, “You can relax as well. Anytime I see a dog, I’ll chase it away for you!”

Seeing how the two finally made up with each other, Jiang YanLi cheered, “That’s the spirit.”

— ch. 71

She is happy because they made up and because this exchange seems like a tentative start to a friendship: "I'll cover for you" returned with "I'll protect you from your fears". Yes, JC used that fear against him in the first place — but he apologized and promised to make up for it. WWX falling from a tree wasn't directly JC's fault anyway; he didn't chase him up that tree and then push him down so that he'd get injured, he only told him to stay out of their room. It was a childish tantrum that led to unfortunate consequences. Not many children would willingly admit to a wrongdoing.

I also want to note that we don't actually learn WWX's leg was broken in this chapter. JYL says it isn't broken, it's probably not even fractured, and later on it's mentioned that the doctor cleaned and bandaged their injuries, but her assumption of his leg not being broken isn't refuted. We only get confirmation that it really was broken in chapter 87 when he shares this story with LWJ.

Finally, "JYL gets upset at WWX for breaking [JC's] arm".

Jiang YanLi, however, noticed [Wen Ning's] awkwardness. She asked him a couple of things and began to chat with Wen Ning outside. Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng stood in the yard.

After he drank a mouthful, Jiang Cheng spoke, “How’s your wound from last time?”

Wei WuXian, “It healed a long time ago.”

Jiang Cheng, “Mn.” With a pause, he continued, “How many days?”

Wei WuXian, “Less than seven. I told you before. With Wen Qing, it was nothing difficult. But you really did fucking stab me.”

Jiang Cheng ate a piece of lotus root, “You were the one who smashed my arm first. You took seven days, while I had to hang my arm up for an entire month.”

Wei WuXian grinned, “How could it seem realistic if it wasn’t hard enough? It was your left hand anyways. It didn’t hinder you from writing. It takes a hundred days to heal a wound to the bone. It wouldn’t be too much even if you hung it up for three months.”

— ch. 75

So: she wasn't even present during that conversation. After this, they part ways.

JYL doesn't really seem to have much of a role in WWX's life apart from comforting him and being placed on a pedestal. She mostly comes off as lacking because of the obvious comparison to Wen Ning. Even though he is just as gentle, he also stands up for WWX during the golden core reveal and does it spectacularly. JYL wields her social position, Wen Ning wields his physically indestructible nature (JC lashes him with Zidian, but since Wen Ning is a corpse, he can just keep talking). The circumstances, however, are different. Wen Ning has years of resentment built up, both for himself and for WWX, but to JYL Jin Zixun is a non-entity. The golden core reveal takes place in private and whether Wen Ning keeps going or stops, it can't make things any worse, but the Phoenix Mountain scene is a public almost-scandal and had she insisted, it could've gone two ways: either people back down because WWX has someone in his corner (unlikely, because JYL is a woman and JC, his sect leader, isn't in his corner) and admit that he didn't break any hard rules, or they use this as further ammunition against him.

I think WWX was right in the falling-from-a-tree-into-LWJ's-arms scene: JYL wasn't strong enough, so could she have caught him?

Anyway he dives and blocks the branding iron but oh no, it somehow manages to hit him square in the chest with enough force to burn through his clothes and into his skin!!!

And he drops the Medicine Bottle he hid away to use on lwj eventually

(we’re gonna also ignore the fact that it somehow fell out of where it was securely hidden in his robes even tho he was literally just thrown off a cliff and the Medicine Bottle manages to stay with him and not break at the time)

(look we’re ignoring a lot of things bc we've already determined that special effects are not a high priority in this show AND all this is gonna lead up to great wangxiantics and that makes all of it worthwhile)

Okay so all that happened and then the wens FLEE LIKE THE COWARDS THEY ARE and totally ditch their hostages i mean visiting disciples

Then the bastards not only run away, but cut the ropes leading up the cliff and THEN block off the cave entrance WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU WC

The hostages i mean visiting disciples start freaking out. Like oh no, we’re stuck in here forever, WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE

Wwx diffuses the panic by being like, hey CANNIBALISM LOL I’M ALREADY PARTIALLY COOKED. i am a snack FOR REAL LOLOLOL

After all this, AFTER ALL THIS PLOT-ISH NONSENSE I HAD TO EXPLAIN, we get a little bit of wangxiantics. As a treat.

Mianmian is crying her heart out and apologizing profusely bc she feels bad for getting everyone trapped in this cave EVEN THO IT’S NOT HER FAULT AT ALL PLZ DON’T CRY MIANMIAN ILU

Wwx obvs agrees with me and goes to comfort her. Which he does in a weird way

Nearly everyone escapes the Murder Turtle Cave!! Because of teamwork and the buddy system!! It’s very heartwarming and inspiring AND WE DON’T CARE BC IT’S NOT WANGXIAN

But oh no, at the last minute when lwj and wwx are oh so conveniently the only ones left in the cave, the Murder Turtle notices them!!

It tries to attack wwx!!

this goes out to @timelykey and @gardenostalgic who sat there and watched me type this out in discord like some kind of mad scientist. 

Also big shout out to @ardatli who’s fic He Dreams In Kaiju Blue is the direct inspiration for much of this structure/idea

so pacific rim 

but like earlier, not the end of day but like when there were lots of domes before they try the thing with the wall

lxc and lwj are the “twin jades of Lan”

jc and wwx as the "heroes of yunmeng"

then some horrible fight happens

and like jc gets knocked out of his pilot gear

wwx pilots alone for a bit

but takes like A BRUTAL CHEST HIT

*wink wink

and like lwj is technically a pilot with his brother right

but their dome got attacked

and his brother has injuries

so rather than ground two jeagers they are like "lets see if we can make them work together"

we got a war going on. we cant just ground two fighters 

and like lwj new them in pilot school or whatever 

also they aren't naturally drift compatible but because a) lwj can contain his presence so carefully (jc cannot); b) they share a common purpose, they can make it work 

lwj is just getting through what happened to his home base    

and it turns out WWX is injured and its all "ill be there tomorrow" 

so the fighting is happening but lwj keeps seeing something out of the corner of his eye while they fight and like he knows those movements 

Like the ghost of a third pilot in the cockpit with them    

and lwj is suddenly having really vivid dreams of wwx 

he's like "well i always dream of him" 

only these are less like, his fantasy and more like having wwx in his head 

  his dreams are becoming weirdly realistic but like lets say a few of them have gone a little more sexy

and he doesnt know like that this is the actual wwx he's communing with

so they get into the jaeger for a fight and instead of his blank state when he hooks up, some that like leaks out

(because its coming from WWX)

and the fight goes... not well... and then jc like punches lwj in the middle of the loading bay all "you make me see this shit!"

but lwj like knows he didnt leak anything mentallyhe's a good boy and that's how he realizes its really wwx

and that they have to get him out

i like to think that jc doesnt have dreams of wwx because of like emotional things, right, he's too congested

or wwx tried to contact him but the tsundere got in the way of making a meaningful connection

lwj is actively searching, hoping, wanting so he's easy to connect to 

so now lwj has to like try to convince people that he knows how to save wwx

but talking isnt his strong suit

so lwj tries to maybe speak with yanli but she's VERY SAD

so he decides to do what he was born to do break rules

and nhs is like "i caught you on tape breaking into the medical ward. im in."

wen qing like "i will help as well but i never want to see him back here again. you hear me"

she's the med tech obvi

so they like take his body to a pilot thing and hook him up

and like right as they are connecting, idk the management notices what's up right like the Jins or some one 

and its like "solider you are breaking protocol"

you know that moment in stories where like the foot solider is ordered to capture the protagonist

nhs trips someone

wen qing smacks someone into a nap

and like at the final bridge right before the pilot seat JC is waiting

and there's that moment of "oh fuck we are gonna have to fight him too"

only you know he's just like "THIS BETTER FUCKING WORK BECAUSE OTHERWISE ALL OF US ARE GETTING COURT MARSHALED. EVEN IF IT DOES WORK WE ARE GETTING COURT MARSHALED"

he helps them plug wwx in

and the lwj has to do the hardest thing

openly and actively feel

chase that fucking rabbit

because at the bottom of that rabbit hole is where wwx is waiting

Rabbit leads him back to wwx

so like down the rabbit hole lwj goes of all his memories and pain but also his love for wwx and at the bottom is wwx, with that smile

the one from the stairs of koi tower

and the rest of the military is trying to break down the hatch

and we see WWX open his eyes and look up at lwj and that "you truly are hanguang-jun" line

and jc is like not only holding back soliders but actively sobbing

right up until lwj throws off his pilot helmet to kiss wwx

at which point jc goes back to eye rolls

and here is where i burrow from another piece of media the empror to mulan

like lxc being like "you were stupid, you were reckless, you got fucking courtmarshalled, but you also saved us all"

and lwj is just "no regrets"

(1) This is going to get long & rambly, dont mind me. So.. WWX loves perfumes & scents. Every time they end up at a market he ends up at a perfumer's stall smelling everything until his nose is burning like some sort of crazed kid at a Yankee Candle & making whoever's with him do the same. ("Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan! You have to smell this one it's my favorite!" "Mn. Wei Ying has many favorites") Somehow he's still surprised when LWJ gives him a small vial of fancy indulgent scent for his birthday.

(2) LWJ is so bummed when he doesn't ever wear it. But he takes it everywhere and tells him smelling it makes him less lonely when they have to be apart so it cant have been that bad a gift. LSZ probably tries the same sometime with similar results. (He's decided that they should celebrate the anniversary of LWJ's visit to the burial mounds every year and gets his fathers' gifts accordingly.

(3) He's also been the victim of one of WWX's perfume shop sprees so it seemed like a good idea.) He takes it a little more to heart and probably complains to his friends though.Which is where JL comes in because, as in most stories like this, he's the common thread that can make the connection no one else will. He doesn't think much of it that first time, just scoffs that WWX is so wierd it's no wonder he'd be impossible to buy gifts for.

(4) (And immediately sets to thinking about what his da jui might like because like any good Jin one of his primary love languages is gifts but that's a different story) It doesn't actually click until the next major cultivation conference. JC leaves the opening banquet as early as is polite stirring up the usual gossip about how unsociable he is and it's no wonder he hasn't married.

(5) WWX finds JL before he can start a fight at the first major event he's hosting as sect leader and shoves a bottle and a packet of herbs into his hands. "For your uncle's headache. One cup of the medicine now, and one when he wakes up in the morning. The herbs can be brewed into a tea to settle his stomach." JL is too shocked to remember he was about to go start trouble but before he can ask how WWX knew he's already bounding across the room to hang off LWJ's arm and pester the other guests.

(6 oop hit my anon limit but idc) (Because what could he have said if he'd stayed to be asked. That of course he knew, JC is his baby brother? That it should have been obvious to anyone with eyes? That between the crowds and everyone wearing their best (strongest) perfumes & the stress of wanting everything to be perfect for JL he's surprised he lasted as long as he did? Certainly not that if it had been up to him he would have dragged JC out of there an hour ago when his eye started twitching.)

(7) Later that week when they have a free evening the juniors take off for the Lanling markets with WWX (who's totally there to supervise) and LWJ (actually supervising). It's such a relief to be away from the politics of it all & everyone is having a great time. When WWX waves them over to the perfume stall LSZ & LJY (who know better) suddenly become very interested in the merits of several silk coin purses in the stall across the way leaving JL to go see what he wants.

(8) Less patient than his husband or son it only takes four bottles before JL snaps that he'll buy him whichever one he wants if he'll just stop before he (JL) burns his nose off. WWX laughs and tells him that he doesn't wear strong scents anyway. And between the Gusu medicine from earlier and a vaguely familiar look that comes over his face when he says it it clicks for JL who can't help shoving him and calling him an idiot.

(9)"What? What? What did I do?" And he looks so genuinely confused and slightly wounded that JL has to roll his eyes and relent. He stands and stares at him so long and hard that WWX smile flickers and he starts to fidget before telling him, "You know, juijui never let anyone at Lotus Pier get a dog." And with that revelation he turns on his heel and walks (doesn't run and /certainly/ doesn't at all flee) off to find his friends so he doesn't have to see his uncle's look of shock and confusion.

So i remeber that the fic starts with the author telling us that wei ying and lan zhan are happy after everything that happened and wei ying is trying to cultivate his golden core but wei yings core is not strong enough so that he can cultivate to imortality. Lan zhan decides that he does not want to live eternaly and he ages with wei ying. Lan zhan is sharing his spiritual energy with wei ying and this way he ie sustaining the both of them until he finally runs out of it and one day they lay in bed and they die together in the jingshi. CQL Yiling Matriarch Ep 19 canon-divergence au

just to get this all in one place, me and some friends were yelling about this post and ways that Jiang Yanli might plausibly become the Yiling Matriarch and we came up with two divergence points: Episode 19 and Episode 32. This post will cover episode 19. The following will cover the episode 32 divergence point.

The first is at episodes 17/18/19, we’ll call this the Episode 19 Divergence since that’s where we started with this one.

In my version of this JYL goes with the boys back to Lotus Pier and witnesses all the horrors wrought by Wang Liangjiao and Wen Zhuliu. Then we get divergence (a) where she gets caught by Wen Chao and dragged back to Lotus Pier to have her core melted and then dumped into the Burial Grounds before she can be rescued. Or (b) for maximum Yunmeng Bro angst and also to give her more time to bond with Wen Qing, after being the one to knock out Wei Wuxian and give Jiang Cheng her core (assume WWX already fed JC the Baoshan Sanren story and instructions but she and Wen Qing hijack it on the theory that her weaker core won’t hurt JC - he should be able to build it up - and gives her a better chance to survive because the weaker your core, the less your body/immune system is dependent on it so she decides she’s the best choice and she needs to protect her brothers above all, anyway). She ends up in possession of WWX’s qiankun bag (somehow) with the all important Evil Smoking Sword of Screaming Ghosts before she’s caught.

In the Burial Mounds, the sword doesn’t tempt her with revenge but with (finally) gaining the power to actually protect her younger brothers. With finally measuring up to her mother’s reputation.

Wen Chao is an asshole, as always, and she politely but fervently flays him verbally in front of his minions and he lists in detail all the things he’s going to do to her brothers when he gets a hold of them. He threatens her golden core, as well, but decides not to bother ("it won't make a difference to you anyway" ouch) and just throws into the Burial Mounds. Proceed to end of Sunshot except it’s a three-person teamup (JC, WWX, and LWJ - maybe 4 with JZX proving he’s not totally useless ahead of schedule) looking for JYL when she invades the Yiling Supervisory Office with green flames and flute music and an army of fierce corpses like in the donghua and makes fierce corpse Wang Liangjiao eat Wen Chao’s face (the donghua version of his death is very satisfying, ok, and WWX’s grand entrance is The Most Dramatic Goth Thing). 

Anyway, yadda yadda Sunshot Campaign JYL is a BAMF necro-sorceress, finding the time to seduce and marry Jin Zixuan ahead of schedule. So she’s pregnant when Wen Qing comes to her for help. Of course, she doesn’t hesitate but she does ask WWX to be her frontman to get the info from the Jins (because she doesn’t want to deal with Jin Guanshan and Jin Zixun (and also I need WWX to still sweep in and rescue LWJ from forced political day drinking)).

This also means that WWX insists on coming with her (maybe even goes ahead by sword to rescue Wen Ning before he ends up quite so much of a corpse while she and Wen Qing ride. Anyway, they both end up in Yiling with the Wens - which means hello juicy Jiang Cheng Feelings Of Being Left Out By His Siblings and Jin Zixuan maybe (probably) developing his backbone a bit more and earlier to keep his own family from trying to behead his wife. It also means we still get WQ & WWX friendship, and LWJ visiting and being cute with A-Yuan. Bonus: JYL/WQ romance.

There’s no ambush (if anybody wants to see baby Jin Ling, they get to come to Burial Mounds) and therefore no WN & WQ surrender and no Nightless City battle but Jin Guanyao/Jin Guanshan still push a Burial Mounds siege. But with more people on side, it doesn’t go as well for our antagonists and so maybe everybody lives? Except let’s do a full subversion of the fridging trope here (and maximum ripping out of LWJs heart, sorry but he suffers so beautifully) and Wei Wuxian dies but this time protecting Jiang Yanli (and everybody) by throwing himself onto the self-destructing Yin Tiger Seal to contain the blast radius of resentful energy.

Fast forward 13 (or 16) years (or possibly less time even but i’m really attached to The Teen Squad) and now it’s JYL and NHS and WQ who’ve plotted together to bring WWX back and hook him up with LWJ and pull all of JGY’s secrets out into the daylight. Because of the way he died and having lived in Burial Mounds for upwards of a year, he’s sensitive to resentful energy and learned/invented some tricks working with JYL but it’s not his go-to solution this round. But he still inherits a weak core from MXY so needs LWJ to protect him. JYL and JZX and the surviving Wens are in hiding and help/send anonymous hints where they can but are only able to come out once it’s safe. Thus keeping most of my favourite parts of the plot intact.

Here’s my long ass review of TGCF that literally no one asked for it i have opinions and I have no one to tell them too so i must write them out and post them. (also part of this is abt the mdzs novel bc i can’t not compare them and I have a lot of thoughts abt that too)

This is very very long so it’s going under a read more. Spoilers ahead!!

Okay so first off this book was a fucking behemoth i can’t believe i read all of that (minus the extras) in under a week.. what the fuck. I definetly got reading fatigue halfway thru book 3.

I’m gonna separate my thoughts into sections bc i  have a few points that don’t all relate

firstly, overall writing and organization:

I said it earlier but tgcf is a lot more structurally sound than mdzs imo. My biggest criticism of the MDZS novel (minus the bad sex scenes, homophobia, and general I hate mxtxness of it) was the way the flashbacks were presented. 

Like OH MY GOD they were presented so badly. I hated that the flashback was told intermittently and only when one of the characters invoked the past. For example, when WWX meets Jiang Cheng and a second time, Jin Ling distracts JC to release “Mo Xuanyu” bc he saved his life in the Nie Ancestral hall earlier. WWX then proceeds to be the self sacrificing dude he is and take away Jin Ling’s curse and put it on himself. When he escapes and returns to LWJ, LWJ offers to carry him.

 If you watched CQL, you know exactly what LWJ is referring to when he says smth to the effect of “You once offered to carry me too, remember.” HOWEVER in the novel you don’t know what he’s talking about. This is because the flashback wasn’t been revealed to you yet. The next chapter goes to tell the flashback. I think that this takes away all of the emotional depth away from the scene. But in CQL, having the flashback already be known, you make the connection on your own and are like “awww wangji remembers that.. even 16 years later.“ Its a lot sweeter bc you know what the two have gone thru. At this point in the MDZS novel its barely the 30th chapter or so and you have no real idea what wangxian have been thru together or what reasons wangji has for loving wwx. You just think, well obviously they like each other bc this is a danmei novel and they are the two leads, ofc they have to like each other. But in cql, you learn through watching them that they’re in love. It’s not just like”well they have to be!! its a bl!!”

Okay that was a rlly long side tangent but it makes me so angry. So what did any of that have to do with TGCF?? well tgcf doesn’t have this issue. In fact, i believe that it gains a lot from having the flashback withheld from the reader. 

I really liked how the flashbacks were contained to books 2 and 4 respectively because it adds a layer of mystery. Hua Cheng is a very secretive man so it makes sense for us to not know everything about him upfront. The way that the author teases and hints little things at you make you want to know more, making it all the more satisfying when the truth is revealed. Because in a way you Know that Hua Cheng meets Xie Lian before and you know that he’s the child XL saved during the God Pleasing Ceremony but you don’t know all the details. Like obviously since Hua Cheng is a ghost you know that he’s died and it was likely for Xie Lian or Xian le’s sake but you probably never expected that he actually died twice. Once on the battle field and second when he took the human face disease. I think the difference between these flashbacks and the flashbacks in MDZS result from the length. In TGCF you get two long concise flashbacks that make sense to be placed where they are. Book 2 because you already have a feel and hint at what the characters have been through and book 4 because the White No Face appears again so then you learn how he and Xie Lian met before. It wouldn’t make sense to place book 2 any earlier bc there is no emotional impact. And it doesn’t make sense to place book 4 earlier because you don’t know what the white no face’s deal is so it’d be confusing. In MDZS, you get numerous short flashbacks happening alongside the main story and it makes it hard to piece together the timeline in a way that feels satisfying. Ik a lot of ppl grill cql for having a confusing intro episode and having a rlly long flashback but its much better than the mdzs novel. However the mdzs donghua handles the flashback in the most concise way imo.

Overall i think the way the story is structured is very good and is a step up from mdzs. Also the horror aspects of tgcf are rlly enjoyable and honestly i think mxtx should just write short horror stories at this point. like enough long ass novels chock full of fetishization. just write some fun horror with no romance and call it a day.. pls

Side Characters:

okay so straight up, i think the side characters arent used as well as they were in mdzs bc mxtx wanted to focus on hualian and didn’t want to give the side characters as much focus. This is a weaker point of the novel.

I’ll get into it more below but i think hua cheng was done dirty as a character by having him rlly only care abt xie lian. Since he doesn;t have any real relationships with others outside of xie lian this takes away from having more depth in the side characters. They’re really only related as far as xie lian’s relationship with them. Though thankfully xie lian gets rather close with a few officials and the ones we get to see more of are rlly interesting. I especially loved the reconciliation of mu qing, feng xin, and xie lian at the end of book 5. honestly their relationship was one my favorites and i’m glad they finally said what they had to say to each other after 800 fucking years. Also Shi Qingxuan is a delight. we stan sqx in this house.

The characters i wish we had seen more of were yushi huang (although she didnt rlly want to be there, good for her), Quan Yizhen and Yin Yu. I very much wish yizhen and yin yus story happened earlier on and we had more time with them. It felt strange to have their subplot occur towards the end and it was sort of out of place but i liked them a lot!! i wish there was more to it. and that there was a reconcilation but mxtx hates happy shidi’s doesnt she, (glares at novel jc). Also man yin yu did NOT have to die like that i’m sad.

Also, honestly.. i don’t think qi rong added to the story whatsoever and i have no clue why he and guzi were there. qi rong just pissed me off the whole time and added literally nothing.

going back to yushi huang, i’d like to say for the millionth time that i hate how mxtx uses any of her female characters. like we get it.. u hate women being useful... im still pressed but what i want to say has been said many times before so ill leave it at that.

Hualian:

I really really did like hualian at the end. They had a truly epic love story and it was so beautiful, especially when hua cheng repeated his words as wuming to xie lian as he started to disappear. But, I said it once and i’ll say it again. I don’t think Hualian is a super healthy relationship. As fiction its fine (i firmly believe fiction impacts reality but let me finish), i guess bc literally nothing about their situation can be replicated irl and none of it ended up containing manipulation or abuse or anything bad but there was a potential for it to and i’m really glad it didnt go that route.

Hualian is a highly idealized and romanticized relationship full of some truly troubling feelings of self worth. While its “beautiful” in a way that hc really was xls most devoted believer, it wasnt healthy for him to live for xl like this. Nor was it healthy for xl to feel so unworthy of hua chengs love.  

Hua Cheng’s devotion to Xie Lian is a little too extreme and it bothers me. When the truth was revealed abt the Temple of 10,000 Gods I had the same reaction as Mu Qing and Feng Xin. I was like... HEY WHAT THE FUCKK that’s a little uh... thats NOT HEALTHY,, dianxia PLEASE say smth. But ofc Xie Lian didn’t say fucking anything and and i was so pissed. Like the whole thing of Hua Cheng living his life solely for XIe Lian is really kinda fucked up and not romantic. I was holding out hope that at some point XIe Lian would sit him down and be like “Hey! I love you and i’m really grateful that all these years you’ve still believed in me when no one else did. But you can’t just live your life for my sake. You deserve love from many other other people and deserve to have a life and happiness outside of me. I still want to spend the rest of my life with you, but you need to not only think of me.” or something to that effect

It bothers me that after Xie Lian learns the truth he doesn’t once reassure Hua Cheng that he didn’t have to make Xie Lian his reason for existence. Like.. idk i just think that’s rlly kinda unhealthy. Like I understand why Hua Cheng is so deeply devoted to Xie Lian-- he saved his life twice and was the only one to ever show him kindness and he’s seen xie lian suffer a fate worse than death multiple times. I get that he wants to protect him and make his life easier, but to not let anyone else into his life and spend 800 years looking for xie lian is just overkill. Like if the whole 10k statues thing never happened i’d be 100 percent fine with hualin but the whole devotion to that extent... uhhh yea.. no that put a bad taste in my mouth. Obsession should not be romanticised. I don’t think any reader of tgcf is going out and deciding to live like hua cheng obviously but still.

Also Side note, the whole 100 swords scene.. bro i felt for hua cheng, the way he screamed seeing that, i don’t blame him. I was so horrified reading that chapter. i don’t think i’ve been so horrified by a piece of media like that in a while. Poor fucking xie lian.. oh my god. I understand the intense reaction he had and how seeing that prompted such a degree of loyalty but still.. 10k statues?? the cave that mu qing and feng xin saw... thats a little too much obssession... like please.. dial it back.. im begging u.

I was talking to mary (liviahyes) and she said smth abt how Hua Cheng doesn’t have a character outside of xie lian. And she’s right, he kinda doesn’t. If Xie Lian didn’t exist neither would Hua Cheng. I get that that counds kinda romantic but in practice i don’t think its a good things. Especially because Xie Lian has a story outside of Hua Cheng, hehas goals, he has friends, he has something. Hua Cheng said it-- his only dream is Xie Lian. Which is romantic but very very unbalanced. 

THAT BEING SAID, i still rly liked their relationship and i think theyre cute they just have issues they need to work through. I mean they have time but yea. It wasn’t perfect but eh. overall i’m bitter bc they couldve been THAT COUPLE but theyre so many bad implications as mentioned above and i.. smh. They still have amazing moments. Like the lantern scene, the alter scene, the “what matters is you, not the state of you”, the end when hua cheng helps release the shackles on xie lian, the scene where hua cheng disappears, the way xie lian waited for him, like they were so close to being THAT COUPLE but then mxtx and her fujo ass just had to make it uncomfortable like that. i’m so bitter. Like the reason why i wrote out all of this is bc this novel could’ve been great but so many little things added up and made the experience far more sour than it shouldve been.

MXTX did hua cheng SO DIRTY by not giving him a character much outside of loving xie lian and being good at everything. Like when I first learned abt how Hua Cheng beat 33 heavenly officials at what they excel in best i was like WHO IS THIS LEGEND but honestly.. he rlly doesn’t have any motivations outside of helping xie lian and I wish he had more to him . Like if we had more situations like the one where hua cheng dug out his own eye to save the group of mortals on mount tong’lu then he’d have been a much more well rounded character. Honestly, that’s rlly the only instance where he seems to have taken xie lians ideals to heart. I wish we had more of that bc that scene was so cool. i wish it hadn’t been revealled so late and there was more than one occasion where he defends others (minus xie lian ofc) without anything for himself to gain that.

To contrast hualian with wangxian, i think wangxian work so well bc at their core, they have the same life goals and same ideas about people and the world. Where in hualian, xie lian has core principles and morals and hua cheng is just like, anything for xie lian. SMH they couldve been great but overall i think hualian falls flat for me because of my own fear of dating someone who doesn’t have a life outside of dating me. Moreso, my parents had this sort of unbalanced relationship towards the end of their marriage and it ended very badly and yea, i just can’t whole heartedly love relationships that in any way resemble this, even if it ends differently. that’s a personal thing tho.

I don’t think Hua Cheng has ANY bad intentions towards Xie Lian or ever will. I don’t think he’s ever manipulated xl or tried to force him to love him. But again, it’s my own personal feelings that makes me feel kinda.. ehh conflicted abt hualian. There was potential but again.. fujoshis ruin everything... smh. Overall i think the way it ended redeemed the issues it had but still there were issues and i really wish xie lian like,, reassured hua cheng about living his life freely at some point but whatever. 

IN CONCLUSION

TGCF had the potential to be better than mdzs, it rlly did but it was bogged down by the authors own toxic mentalities abt love, and mlm relationships, and treating women like ppl and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I enjoyed this book, truly i did (otherwise i wouldn’t have stuck through and read 750k words of it) but there are some flaws that cannot be glossed over. I hope that tgcf when it does get adapted, goes through the same miracle that cql did and makes the characters more like ppl and less like tropes but i doubt it. Also i highly doubt that a live action tgcf is feasible given the supernatural aspects of the series but we shall see. I’m excited for the donghua when it eventual comes out but i will continue to be critical of the novel bc..well.. you see why. idk if i’d reccommend this book tbh bc like yes i would, no i would... well.. </3. yea. overall, it sure was something that i enjoyed in spades. especially the last 5 chapters. I generally liked it but had many issues with it at the same time, but honestly, yea thats the standard fair for a mxtx novel.

MDZS Grim Reaper/ Death God AU (Part 1)

AU where Wei Wuxian is a Grim Reaper/ Death God who is tasked with taking Lan Wangji’s soul when LWJ was 15. Instead of doing his job, he ends up falling in love with LWJ and keeps delaying the inevitable.

He disguises himself as a rogue cultivator when they both meet. He keeps coming to the Cloud Recesses under the pretense of visiting the library. LWJ is supposed to die saving a few disciples from the Waterborne Abyss but WWX saves him instead.

Grateful, Gusu Lan invites him to stay as a guest disciple. He gets to go to class with JC, NHS and JZX too. One look at JZX and he casually says “oh, you’ll have a short life” without thinking and they fight. JC immediately takes a liking and invites him to visit Lotus Pier.

Fellow Grim Reaper in charge of the North, Wen Qing comes to see why WWX delays his task. WWX convinces WNQ that his task needs to be delayed because of some complication but she warns WWX that there will be consequences and changes to other people’s fate because of the delay.

LWJ meanwhile asks LXC and LQR if having a male cultivation partner is acceptable. They easily know why he asks the question and have no objections. LWJ and WWX gets closer and more affectionate. Meanwhile, rumours of Qishan Wen’s move spreads.

Wen Xu invades the Cloud Recesses. WWX tries to help but is stopped by Grim Reaper Wen Zhuliu, who has been tasked to reap Qingheng-jun’s soul and a few other disciples of the sect. He notices that Lan Xichen is on the list of WZL’s missive and warns him to escape. LQR agrees.

He had to watch the Cloud Recesses burn and saves LWJ, leaving him with a leg injury instead of letting him die. WZL finishes his task (others can’t see him because he doesn’t make himself visible) and warns WWX to stop interfering with fate before things get worse.

Things will further deviate now that WWX has delayed two deaths, LWJ’s and LXC’s. Before WZL leaves, he asks how many people are on his lists. WZL simply tells him originally, one. Because of the recent turns of the wheel of fate, thousands. WWX falls to his knees in shock.

But he can’t bring himself to take LWJ’s life. He’s going to do what he can to save as many people who are not supposed to be on the list yet even if he ends up angering the heavens further. LQR and LWJ retreats to Lotus Pier discreetly to recuperate. WWX follows.

They reach Lotus Pier and WWX is taken aback by the “death marks” he sees on everyone there including Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli. He immediately knows that the entire Lotus Pier is fated to die soon. All except for Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan.

He has seen JC’s fate previously and JC is supposed to live a long life with strong cultivation. He wants JC to have his original fate, at least, so he makes the hardest decision he ever had to make: transfer JC’s death mark to JFM instead and JYL’s mark to YZY.

LQR leaves Lotus Pier to rendezvous with LXC. LWJ stays behind with WWX because of his injury. WWX looks at a sleeping LWJ, his hand trembles when he puts his hand on LWJ’s heart. He wonders if things will change if he takes LWJ’s life now... but he doesn’t. He can’t.

When YZY sends JYL away to meet her fiance’s family, WWX is relieved. With JYL alive, at least JC will not be alone. Maybe he can revive the Jiang Sect. The Wens invades Lotus Pier after  getting the news that LP sheltered LQR and LWJ. WZL looks at WWX with disapproval.

LWJ and WWX help JC escape. LWJ receives news from Gusu and needs to return. WWX casts a forbidden spell that hides LWJ from other Grim Reapers before he goes. WWX stays with a brokenhearted JC to find JYL.

On the way, JC falls ill and collapsed. Wen Qing comes and yells at WWX for not heeding her warning. “LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE DONE! ONE LIFE IN PLACE OF A MILLION OTHERS.” In the middle of their argument, Wen Ning chances upon them and saves JC.

It turns out WN can see both WWX and WQ. JC later wakes up and tries to kill WN but is immobilized by WQ. WN doesn’t have a death mark anyway, not yet. Begrudgingly grateful, JC continues on his way to meet JYL. WQ warns WWX again.

WWX finds out that JYL’s fiance is JZX. He remembers that JZX is supposed to have a short life and indeed, he has a death mark. WWX doesn’t hesitate to transfer the mark to Jin Zixun, who just happened to be there but doesn’t have a death mark. A life in exchange for one spared.

WWX leaves JC now that he’s safe and returns to Gusu. Everyone is still recovering but they’re also preparing for war. WWX visits late Qingheng-jun’s quarters and weeps for forgiveness. He weeps for forgiveness from everyone whose fate was changed. LWJ finds him crying.

“Lan Zhan, I have committed a grave sin.” LWJ says he won’t judge WWX and his past sin. He confesses that he wants to stay by WWX’s side. WWX kisses him and promises that things will change for the better. Going against the nature of the Grim Reaper, his soul starts to fracture.

By now, WWX has: - refused to complete a mission, delayed LWJ’s death, hidden him from other reapers - triggered multiple deaths of others for tampering with death marks, exchanging their fates - fallen in love, physically and emotionally involved with a human fated to die earlier

A fallen Grim Reaper is what he is gradually becoming and in time, he may even turn into a demon or banished to become a powerless human. He knows he won’t be able to escape punishment forever. The only reason he is not yet stopped is because the higher ups find it entertaining.

Fast forward - Qishan Wen eventually falls. The war comes to an end. LWJ proposes to WWX. LXC brings his sworn brothers to the Cloud Recesses. For the first time, they meet NMJ and JGY. When LXC introduces LWJ, JGY appears confused because he can’t see LWJ.

That is when WWX finds out the esteemed Lianfang-zun who assasinated WRH is actually another Grim Reaper parading as a human, just like him! JGY, too, realises what WWX did to LWJ and smiles knowingly.

ok, so i finally got around to the delinquent/student council au.

so imagine this.

if wwx was a student council president;

- he probably run for president as a joke, not knowing he would win. and then he’ll laugh about it. “this presidency thing is not a joke.” “what are the chances I would win?” 

- almost everyone retreats the council election the moment they heard wwx was running. and then he gets a bit lost because he won and he doesn’t know what to do. he didn’t expect himself to win. “its a joke.” yeah. a joke gone wrong.

- wwx ask jc to be the vice pres because at least he knows what to do and i live for yunmeng jiang duo moments. wen ning becomes the secretary. he is as lost as wwx. but since he decides to be wwx’s right-hand man, he tries to do his job properly. and he’s scared of jc if he doesn’t do things correctly. lsz becomes the treasurer because wwx trust him to take care of the finances.

- jc will be the one that takes care of the administrative stuffs with the school and wwx would be taking care of the students. wwx is great with students and are friends with almost everyone.

- the teachers are surprised that the school hasnt collapse with wwx as president.

- (i can’t seem to fit lwj as a delinquent type) he’s the kind of student that just ignores the whole world. its between school, home and probably a part-time job as a librarian (because he doesn’t really need to communicate with people except scanning books).

- lwj always waits for lsz to end his council meeting before going back together. wwx always sees lwj sitting in a library, studying. and then promptly packing up his bag when lsz reaches. and lsz and lwj will have dinner together. lwj always waits for lsz to have dinner.

- sometimes wwx would invite lwj over for their “council meeting break” because they would sometimes end late and this means lwj would have a late dinner. and wwx doesnt let anybody starve. so they’ll have dinner (usually yl would cook pork rib lotus soup or maybe wq some herbal soup because they’ve been working late these days and shes worried for her younger brother).

- so they’ll have dinner outside the council room resting area and chat something more leisure. lwj knows more about wwx.

- wwx tells lwj to just rest here for a while more while they finish up their meeting. so lwj just studies as he waits for lsz to end the meeting.

- wwx always invites lwj to “council events” even though jc objects to it but wwx doesnt care because lwj is part family.

- lsz went out with his friends today leaving lwj alone. lwj decides to go home when he notices the auditorium lights on. did someone forget to turn off the lights?

- he walks past the room to see wwx hanging banners for the upcoming school festival. he sees wen ning hanging streamers at the other end of the room. it looked like it was too much for a two men job.

- lwj decides to help them instead. wwx thanks him.

- “lanzhan, can you hand me that white balloon?” wwx falls from the ladder because he couldn’t reach. lwj to the rescue as he catches the falling wwx. “haha thanks lanzhan.”

- wwx was about to climb up the ladder again but lwj stops him. lwj takes the decoration from wwx hands and climbs up the ladder.

- lwj doesn’t allow wwx to climb ladders throughout the day. wen ning finds it cute.

- wen ning walks their direction home, leaving lwj and wwx together. the both of them walk home together.

- wwx hears lwj’s stomach grumble and realised lwj probably hasnt had dinner. so wwx walks the other way (away from his house) and brings lwj to eat. “its cheap and good.”

- wwx orders assorted dishes. he likes spicy food but he isn’t sure about lwj. lwj is thankful that there was something he could eat. although he wouldnt say it.

- wwx walks home with lwj. lwj finds out wwx is afraid of dogs. because cue nervous laughter and faster pace walking everytime a dog barks. “i live here.” “mhm” “have a safe walk home” “mhm” “bye lanzhan” “mhm” “see you in school tomorrow.” “mhm.”

- it becomes a routine for lwj to wait for wwx as well. (a) to protect wwx from dogs (b) because he likes spending time with wwx.

- (cue awkward confession some time later)

- nothing much has changed. except now wwx sometimes wait for lwj to end his library work shift, so he waits for him at a corner. usually he falls asleep. but hes usually within eye view of his lwj. they’ll have lunch together before lwj needs to go back to work again. and wwx goes back to his seat and continues his work. doodling rated r things maybe? 

if lwj was a student council president;

- he’s probably a legacy student kind of thing. like lxc was probably a council president before. lwj was the vice pres and when lxc graduated, lwj steps up as the president.

- school probably feels more at ease when lan family runs for presidency. like lwj hears things like “your uncle is an alumni” “your family are part of the alumnus.” and so lwj continues his family legacy. lsz is the next in line as the vice president as he follows lwj’s footsteps.

- ljy is the secretary and the whole school board is at ease because it’s basically ran by the lans and they are happy. the school board trusts him a lot with the school affairs.

- lwj would be with the school disciplinary master every morning at the school gates, catching students who are late and have messy attire. and every morning, wwx would be one of these students.

- wwx is the smart delinquent student who comes to school with uncombed hair, his school shirt has creases or some times unbuttoned. and every morning he would smile at him and shout “morning lanzhan!”

- wwx would sit at the back of the class, and not listen to the teacher. he would some times stare out of the window or daydream, some times he would just fall asleep in class. the teachers are just thankful he doesn’t cause a ruckus.

- wwx is a smart student that always aces his exams. even the teacher questions how the hell he does it. teachers suspects he cheats because there was no way he could score this well despite not even listening to the teachers.

- “he didn’t cheat.” “i know wwx. wwx would do anything but cheat.” because even though wwx has a bad rep with the teachers, he has a good rep with the students. because he usually gets in trouble by helping student out a lot.

- but the teachers still doesnt believe them. “one more word and whoever defends wwx has to redo the exam.” wwx smiles and tells them not to worry about him so the students all kept quiet. so the teachers makes wwx redo the exam in front of them, alone in a separate room. lwj to stand in and invigilate as well. because two pairs of eyes were better than one.

- wwx complains it was more difficult than the one he took earlier but he still scores well in the exams. the teachers eyes widened as he marks the paper right in front of wwx. it was nearly full marks. except for some horrible handwriting and scribbles which was difficult to decipher what he was writing.

- lwj notices wwx’s maths scores are always higher than the rest of the subjects. he decides to approach him to be the student council treasurer to look after the finances. and also he needed someone that was good with the students as well. ljy and lsz could do the junior section of the school. but lwj isn’t good with the seniors.

- “what do i get?” wwx asked. it was a joke. he would say yes in the end. he couldn’t refuse because (a) it was lan zhan (b) he’s goodlooking. damn the lans and their gene pool.

- wwx becomes the school’s treasurer, and in charge of the finances. but it wasn’t like he was needed anyway because the lans always thought of the best solution using the least finances.

- but lwj tells him that he needed somebody that was good with the students as well and wwx was the best person he thought of.

- the school first objected to wwx being on the school council. but lwj told them that what better idea to look after wwx?

- lwj finally understands why wwx was always running late for classes every morning. (insert cliche reasons why smart student is late for class every morning). so lwj always sends signals to wwx when he sees him entering the school gates. button your shirt properly. your hair is in a mess. your school tie. run, wwx youre still safe if you pass the gates within the next 30 seconds.

- lsz feels that it is more bright with wwx during the meetings. it was always so uptight.

- council member after-parties are usually held in the lan residences. wwx asking lwj if he had tried alcohol. so he pours a glass to lwj and have him taste alcohol for the first time.

- (cue drunk lwj) lsz and lly sees a drunk lwj for the first time. because their party dont have alcohol and this is the first time. “mine” lwj claims, hugging wwx. “mine no touchy.” lwj drunk glares his juniors. lxc is amused with his drunk brother. because he knows his brother. wwx is just comforting a very drunk lwj and hopes he doesn’t remember what happened the next morning. lqr doesnt interfere for the night because hes too old for this. and also he doesnt like interacting with wwx.

- “you have a really weak alcohol tolerance, lan zhan.” wwx mumbles as he looks as the clingy lwj for the first time. lwj only drank a glass and he’s down. wwx looks at the two lan juniors and tell them to not mentioned what happened.

- (cue graduation party and the student council members hold another party at the lan residences) lxc tells his brother that he better confess now if not you’re probably never going to see that cute ass again. lwj looks at his brother and lxc just shrugs his shoulders. siblings knows best.

- so cue awkward one to one confession. lwj confessing to wwx. thanking him for coming into his life and so on.

- lwj decides to go to a university or whatever place wwx is going to, no matter his results. wwx doesnt allow his boyfriend to do so. lwj follows his brother and studies masters in a prestigious school while working.

- wwx is thankful that his result is good enough. he surprises lwj by applying to the same school lwj was at, and getting in.

- (cue happy ending music for wangxian)
