Character Bio for Marin
Name: Prince Marin Sondaica
Pronouns: He/Him
Species: Elf (high nobility)
Age: 86 (18)
Special skills: Illusions, mind control, fighting with a staff. Generally very athletic and smart.
Appearance notes: Marin is 5’9 and stereotypical elf skinny. He has dark skin, mostly african features, and black hair styled into shoulder-length locs. Marin has hazel brown eyes that glow emerald green when he uses his magic.
Marin Sondaica is the only child of former Apex Emer Sondaica. He’s only sort of the heir though because…well… because he wasn’t good enough. He had cousins who were better than him at everything. Marin was a spare, and very much not qualified to lead a counter-coup. However, he’s the only Sondaica not in custody or dead, so that task has fallen to him. Before everything went wrong, he made a plan to spend a decade or so on earth for mental health reasons. It’s not going the way he planned.
Marin is keeping his story very close to his chest. The kids don’t know much about him, so neither do you.
here's a picrew, a dubious drawing, and a heroforge model. We're just going to try and triangulate our way to a consistent character design.

"A 2019 sighting by five witnesses indicates that the long-extinct Javan tiger may still be alive, a new study suggests.
A single strand of hair recovered from that encounter is a close genetic match to hair from a Javan tiger pelt from 1930 kept at a museum, the study shows.
“Through this research, we have determined that the Javan tiger still exists in the wild,” says Wirdateti, a government researcher and lead author of the study.
The Javan tiger was believed to have gone extinct in the 1980s but only officially declared as such in 2008...
Ripi Yanuar Fajar and his four friends say they’ll never forget that evening after Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration in 2019 when they encountered a big cat roaming a community plantation in Sukabumi, West Java province.
Immediately after the brief encounter, Ripi, who happens to be a local conservationist, reached out to Kalih Raksasewu, a researcher at the country’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), saying he and his friends had seen either a Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas), a critically endangered animal, or a Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica), a subspecies believed to have gone extinct in the 1980s but only officially declared so in 2008.
About 10 days later, Kalih visited the site of the encounter with Ripi and his friends. There, Kalih found a strand of hair snagged on a plantation fence that the unknown creature was believed to have jumped over. She also recorded footprints and claw marks that she thought resembled those of a tiger.
Kalih then sent the hair sample and other records to the West Java provincial conservation agency, or BKSDA, for further investigation. She also sent a formal letter to the provincial government to follow up on the investigation request. The matter eventually landed at BRIN, where a team of researchers ran genetic analyses to compare the single strand of hair with known samples of other tiger subspecies, such as the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and a nearly century-old Javan tiger pelt kept at a museum in the West Java city of Bogor.
“After going through various process of laboratory tests, the results showed that the hair sample had 97.8% similarities to the Javan tiger,” Wirdateti, a researcher with BRIN’s Biosystemic and Evolutionary Research Center, said at an online discussion hosted by Mongabay Indonesia on March 28.
The discussion centered on a study published March 21 in the journal Oryx in which Wirdateti and colleagues presented their findings that suggested that the long-extinct Javan tiger may somehow — miraculously — still be prowling parts of one of the most densely populated islands on Earth.
Their testing compared the Sukabumi hair sample with hair from the museum specimen collected in 1930, as well as with other tigers, Javan leopards and several sequences from GenBank, a publicly accessible database of genetic sequences overseen by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
The study noted that the supposed tiger hair had a sequence similarity of 97.06% with Sumatran tigers and 96.87% with Bengal tigers. Wirdateti also conducted additional interviews with Ripi and his friends about the encounter they’d had.
“I wanted to emphasize that this wasn’t just about finding a strand of hair, but an encounter with the Javan tiger in which five people saw it,” Kalih said.
“There’s still a possibility that the Javan tiger is in the Sukabumi forest,” she added. “If it’s coming down to the village or community plantation, it could be because its habitat has been disturbed. In 2019, when the hair was found, the Sukabumi region had been affected by drought for almost a year.” ...
Didik Raharyono, a Javan tiger expert who wasn’t involved in the study but has conducted voluntary expeditions with local wildlife awareness groups since 1997, said the number of previous reported sightings coupled with the new scientific findings must be taken seriously. He called on the environment ministry to draft and issue a policy on measures to find and conserve the Javan tiger.
“What’s most important is the next steps that we take in the future,” Didik said."

Working on this one was a real challenge. There are just a few blurry photographs of this animal before its extinction in the 50s, so I had to recreate its features based on written descriptions and the Sumatran Tiger photographs which are its closest relative. I believe I did a great job and I can proudly say this is one of the best illustrations of the Bali Tiger you can find.
Bali Tiger This animal owes its extinction exclusively to humans. It was exterminated in order to make the land habitable for humans in the 1940s. Finally in the 1950s was declared extinct. This tiger form belongs to the second subspecies of tiger (sondaica, the one that lives in islands), along with the Javan Tiger which is also extinct, and the Sumatran Tiger, the only survivor. There is some hope that this animal might still survive in Bali because there are a lot of unexplored lands that haven't been studied. However, is already 70 years since its last sight. It is upsetting that an animal was brought to extinction on purpose. And a loved one. What concerns me the most is that if this can happen to an animal that we all love and care about, imagine those that we don't know or we don't care much about.
I care about animals and I want to do something to protect them. And I think of this project as a way to help. If we know the animals we share the world with more, we are more likely to feel about them and protect them. You can help too by sharing this project.

Some head studies I did of Sumatran tigers! (+ a sneak peek at my next one... the bodies!) I got this random thought at one point, like "huh I wonder how different tigers look?" looked it up and saw these fur babies! they are so interesting and cool! Decided they'll be my first study! And with each one I post, some facts! here we go!!!!!!!
ღ They are the smallest of all tigers! (that are alive) weighing between 242-308ibs!
ღThey originate from Sumatra, Indonesia's western most and largest island
ღ Panthera tigris sondaica is their species' name
ღThey have a longer/fuller beard compared to other species and thinner stripes
Thats all for now! Sources:

Sunda Tiger
Facts
Tumblr media
This subspecies was once prevalent in numerous regions of Indonesia's Sunda islands. Now that tigers in Java and Bali are extinct, the only remaining Sunda tigers can be found in Sumatra.
Website
STATUS: Critically Endangered
POPULATION: Less than 400
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Panthera tigris sondaica
WEIGHT: 165–308 pounds
HABITATS: Tropical broadleaf evergreen forests, freshwater swamp forests and peat swamps
Sunda tigers are identified by their orange coats with thick black stripes. The last of the Sunda island tigers—estimated to be fewer than 400 today—are clinging to life in the island of Sumatra's remnant forest patches. Deforestation is accelerating, and poaching is common, so this magnificent species, like its Javan and Balinese brethren, may go extinct.
Tumblr media
Anyone found shooting tigers in Indonesia might face jail time and hefty penalties. Despite improved efforts in tiger conservation, such as boosting law enforcement and antipoaching capabilities, there is still a significant market for tiger parts and goods in Sumatra and other regions of Asia. Poaching is a constant threat to Sunda tigers, which are rapidly losing their habitat and prey.
Why They Matter
Sumatra is the only site in the world where tigers, rhinos, orangutans, and elephants coexist in the wild. The Sunda tiger's presence is a good indicator of a forest's health and biodiversity. Many other animals, including humans, benefit from the protection of tigers and their habitat.
Threats
Tumblr media
Illegal Wildlife Trade
In Sumatra, the majority of tigers are murdered for commercial reasons. Poaching for trade, according to TRAFFIC, the global wildlife trade monitoring network, is responsible for about 80% of estimated Sumatran tiger deaths, or at least 40 animals each year.
Despite increased conservation and protection measures in some parts of Sumatra, as well as some success in reducing tiger bone markets, there is no indication that tiger poaching has decreased dramatically since the early 1990s.
Human Wildlife Conflict
Tiger dispersal in search of their territory, as well as habitat deterioration, pulls tigers out of protected regions and into human-occupied areas, where they are more likely to encounter humans. Human-tiger conflict is a severe problem in Sumatra, as it is in other regions of the tiger's habitat. Tigers have killed or injured people, and livestock has been stolen. Tigers may be killed as a result of villagers' retaliation.
Habitat Loss
Tumblr media
Clearing for agriculture (especially oil palm), plantations, and habitation has severely impacted the Sumatran tiger's habitat. Illegal timber harvesting and forest conversion are out of control in several regions of the island. The island's forest cover decreased from 58 percent to 26 percent between 1985 and 2014. Even protected locations are not immune to difficulties. Furthermore, forest conversion has separated national parks, as well as populations of species like tigers that require extensive territories for nesting, feeding, and dispersal.

(Some of) the people trying to take over the world
Overthrowing a government is always dangerous, no matter how many decades you’ve spent preparing for it. What better way to prepare yourself and your family for possible death than with a game of monopoly stolen from the Human World? They are normally much better behaved than this. It’s just this family assumes that madness is the core mechanic of monopoly. (It would be too boring otherwise, right?) The coup was successful, for the record. These losers are the first family of an entire elf world. Now they’re going for the human one.
Tumblr media
The woman in the back, wearing the crown, is soon-to-be Apex Ishtar Mercuralis. She should be taller, and built like a truck, but a meme format is a meme format. She is throwing monopoly dollars onto her second in command, Ryn Stormson Mercuralis. She is a noblewoman from the second most important genus, and he is a commonborn sailor turned advisor. They have one son, Fen Mercuralis, who is the noble elf equivalent of seven years old. He’s holding the microphone.
The biological father of the other two children is in the cardboard jail. He’s Arjuna Mercuralis, and they’re a former assassin and current stay at home parent. His two kids with Ishtar are Suen Mercuralis (female, ten, facing away from the camera) and Chandra Mercuralis (male, eight, lying on the floor). Lastly, the old white guy is Ryn’s seneschal, Callum. He’s about 60. Seneschals are elite human servants of the nobility who are part secretary and part emotional support. Callum has served Ryn for nearly 40 years now, and will be retiring soon. Ishtar also has a seneschal, but she doesn’t view hers as a person in the same way. Ryn’s closer relationship with his seneschal (but still one fundamentally based around ownership!) is a direct result of his commoner upbringing.
Of these characters, Ishtar and Ryn are the most important and will get their own posts soon.
You know what, screw it. glossary of terms below.
Apex: the elven title for the ruler of their entire planet. Has always been either the head of Gens Mercuralis or Gens Sondaica.
Genus (plural Genera, shortens to Gens): In the real world this is the term for a group of similar species. It’s derived from a Latin world for descent or lineage. I am using it instead of House to describe noble bloodlines because elves aren’t normal about nature or evolution.
The Human World: Here. A planet without any natural magic, populated by a whole lot of humans. Parallel to the elf world. It’s June of 2019.
The Elf Word: A parallel world to the Human World. It has the same continents and the same rough evolutionary history, but is populated by the naturally magical elves. And humans that they abducted a long time ago to do work.
Nobility: approximately one percent of the population of the Elf World. They form the genera, and those born into the nobility have the most magical aptitude. They reach adulthood at about 100, and die at around 600. Especially powerful nobles (like Genus Mercuralis) will age even more slowly. It is also possible, but very difficult, for a commoner to join the nobility through merit. This does not give them any additional magic.
Commoners: all elves who are not nobility. Around 60% of the population of the elven world. Depending on magical potential, they reach adulthood at 80-90 years old and die somewhere around 500.
Seneschal: elite human servants of the nobility who are part secretary and part emotional support. Some nobles view their seneschals as trusted companions, some more like service animals, and some like walking printers. It depends.

LOVINA-UBUD

"Doing an animal that is so beloved is a real challenge. You want to have it right because you think people might be pickier. It was a really nice experience going further into minimal details trying not just to catch the shape of the animal but also its soul."
As I mentioned to you in my previous post (If you haven't seen it go check it out) I was going to mix things up. Instead of illustrating the whole family at once, I decided to do a couple of families and show a different member every week. I decided to go with the felines because I know how much they are loved but also how challenging they could be. It is my first feline so I struggle with things that none of the other animals I've done has.
Indochinese Tiger
Tigers are a special species. For many years it was thought that they are 9 subspecies. However, the latest studies (2017) demonstrate that they are just two subspecies and each of them is divided by populations of tigers. This is still in debate but most of the books that I checked welcomed this hypothesis. The Indochinese Tiger belongs to the genus panthera tigris tigris along with the Bengal Tiger, the Amur Tiger, and basically, all the tigers that live in Asia land. The other subspecies is the panthera tigris sondaica which are the groups that live in Indonesia. Sumatran Tiger, Bali Tiger, etc.
The Indochinese Tiger was seen in the infamous and today closed Tiger Temple, in Thailand. Where the monks used to drug the tigers, so people can gather around them without any danger. It is also said that they used to sell body parts of the tigers. I must confess that I went to the place ignoring that such horrible things were happening. What a shame. Something to think about. There are more tigers as pets in the United States than in the wild. W.T.F.! StoreInstagram

Species name: Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae or sondaica)
Description: The Sumatran tiger is the world’s smallest tiger subspecies* but still the largest predator in Indonesia. An adult female weighs about 198 pounds (90 kg), while an adult male can be more than 264 pounds (120 kg), with a shoulder height of about 23 inches (60 cm). Sumatran tigers have great day and night vision, very strong canine teeth, and impressive claws for holding and gripping moving prey. Their vision is six times better than humans’ at night, but hearing is their most acute sense, mainly used for hunting. They can detect high-pitched sounds produced by prey. Each individual Sumatran tiger has nearly 100 unique stripe patterns, like human fingerprints, which provide camouflage. Based on these stripes, scientists can identify individual tigers in the wild.*
(Editor’s note: Tiger subspecies remain a matter of ongoing scientific discussion.)
Where it’s found: Endemic to the island of Sumatra, this predator still lives in 24 of 38 landscapes larger than 96 square miles (250 square km), the smallest area that can support a breeding unit.
IUCN Red List status: Endangered at the species level of Panthera tigris. Assessment for all subspecies, including Sumatran tigers, has been discharged by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature awaiting further reassessments. Detail about Sumatran tiger status, however, is provided in the supplementary material of the assessment.
