Honestly I don't really like the Lolth's Embrace marking stuff the visual dictionary uses as-is

because it puts everything in an awkward spot of "why would a drow subspecies explicitly adapted for life in the Underdark have incredibly obvious glowy markings" + if it's an explicit sign of lolth's favor a lot of the frantic balancing act that keeps a lot of lolthcult drow cities on edge is totally lost; imo it should be an all or nothing thing, either everyone has it or nobody does and it remains the same as always, otherwise there's also the REALLY AWKWARD IMPLICATION of "oh so if these characters have lolth's embrace they are badguys yes?"

HOWEVER i do like the idea of like, people assigning various cultural meanings to it based on their beliefs, but it's like, markings that are 1) only visible under infravision and are natural adaptations that mimic other Underdark predators as a false flag of "DON'T EAT ME/DON'T FUCK WITH ME, I'M DANGEROUS/I TASTE BAD" or 2) are markings that don't glow but do get more pronounced when exposed to magic and ambient faezress, kind of like magically induced Blaschko's lines, because the Underdark has a fuck ton of ambient faezress and drow tend to build their cities near to highly concentrated pockets. Drow fighters who spend a lot of time on the surface tend to have them fade because they're not ambiently exposed to faezress anymore; priests/priestesses and other types of magic user don't tend to fade because they're still actively using enough magic that it brings the markings out, which reinforces culturally-instilled paranoia of "is this...a Lolth thing???", especially since wizards have the lolth tests and priestesses obviously have all the [gestures] baggage

tl;dr i don't like the idea of "lolth's embrace" being actually real, but i do like it just being a totally neutral thing everyone has because It Came Free With Your Underdark Adaptations and people have changed or levered the meaning as they see fit/out of superstition or paranoia to slot into existing religious beliefs.
