jay and hailey had several chances to get together in my opinion (6x02,6x22 and 7x09/7x10) but that would all have been too early especially since the timing wasn't right and it's better to wait and then it will be done right (8x03) and it it's worth the wait... hopefully you'll find a better balance and that now in season 10 jay's perspective on the relationship will be highlighted and he'll get a good angst drama story, maybe finally in the finale and will be continued in the following season hope so... maybe hailey will get pregnant in the finale and before she can tell jay something bad will happen to him...

You're exactly right! I know that many fans think that Upzek ruined S6, but in my opinion, if we didn't get Upzek, we would have had Upstead by the S6 finale. It would have been rushed and wouldn't have been a slow burn. I know we had to wait almost 4 seasons to get Upstead canon, but I think it was worth the wait. I love canon Upstead scenes and enjoy watching Upstead in love. But I also enjoyed the pre-canon Upstead, when they were just partners and friends. Their conversations and looks in S6 and S7 were just amazing. Upstead's timeline has been perfect. Everything has been excellent, from how they met, their first kiss, to their marriage. I wouldn't change a single thing about them.

I would also like to see Upstead's relationship from Jay's perspective. S8 and most of S9 Upstead have been focused on Hailey's perspective on the relationship. We saw vulnerable Hailey and supportive Jay. Hopefully, in S10, the roles are reversed, and we see vulnerable Jay and supportive Hailey. And if the writers do give us an Upstead pregnancy in S10, I hope they first let Jay and Hailey talk about kids and how they feel about their future.

After spending so much of her childhood in and out of the kitchen, both at home and at the family’s restaurant, Hailey knew there weren’t many options for her future. Even if she excelled in school, and got into a good college, and applied herself to every dream that crossed her mind, there was only one endgame. She was going to end up in the kitchen at the counter every single night forever. She was going to clear tables and wash dishes for the rest of her life. And that had always seemed fine, when she was a little kid.

She liked getting to run around and see where the adults worked when she was five, and seven, and even ten years old. But she got older, and she saw more, and she understood more. She could see that her parents were stressed about money, even with the help of herself and her brothers at the restaurant every night. She started to understand that the alcohol came with the stress, and so did the yelling, among other things. She knew that there were certain facts of life that she couldn’t avoid, no matter how badly she wanted to. Unless she changed the course her life was on.

It was when she started high school that she tried to do that.

Hailey took introductory business classes for all of her electives in her freshman year. She spent free hours at night pouring over articles and text books she got at the school library, studying numbers and business practices all over the country. Once she had all the information she needed, and summer had started and she didn’t have homework to focus on, she put together her idea.

There was a small arena with a growing base audience - the Mice used to be the worst team in their league, but their record was starting to improve, which meant more people were in the seats with each game. There were multiple spaces that were intended for food vendors within the walls, with low rent payments while attendance was still down. I was an opportunity, and she wanted to jump on it, or at least convince her father to. But it was hard when there wasn’t much money to spare for what the restaurant needed, let alone another location.

Still, they made a deal - she had the summer to find a space, put together a condensed version of the menu, food that could be taken and eaten in a sport setting, and find the staff it would take to run it. If she could do that, she had the rest of the year to prove that her little venture could succeed - four months to test herself, three of them during the hockey season that would bring in most of her prospective revenue. Even at fifteen, she knew an unreasonable challenge when she heard it, but that didn’t stop her.

She chose the unit in the arena herself, and put together a menu to hang above the order window, and even got to review the applications for the hiring process before the decisions were made. She was being set up to fail, and that only made her want to try harder, fight for the success she craved. The only part of it that was actually easy was that she had four brothers who were willing to step up and run the necessary preparation process when she had to go back to school. She only had to be there for game nights and weekend practices, and it only took a month of being up and running for her to fall in love with it.

And, when the season started up and their customer base grew, the failure that she was set up for never came at all.

So, if you are active on our Discord, you know that EE is made in the Unity Engine and the CEO just decided to massively fuck over all the devs who are using it...

But it gets even worse!

Unity since defended themselves, saying that these fees are only affecting 10% of their customers, because of the $200k and $1m thresholds, so Indie devs don't have to worry about that.

…which isn't true:

Unity Plus

They aren't only introducing these fees but also changed the regular pricing plans! They just removed "Unity Plus" which is the lowest tier and costs about $50/month per dev with taxes. This is what most indies use. The next higher tier costs QUADROUPLE that amount and is also required to remove the universally loathed "made with Unity" splash screen. Oh! And if you have the personal tier, you won't be able to use Unity offline anymore! It now needs to do a license check every 3 days to function!

Unity's Ad Service

The fees will hit devs that do free-to-play mobile stuff especially hard, since they still have to pay the fees even when the players don't buy anything, meaning they could end up owing Unity more than they make in income. But what's this? If you use Unity's advertising service for your game, you will get a discount on the fees! The majority of mobile games run on Unity, meaning they are trying to monopolize the mobile ad market with this!

Publishers

Elysian Eclipse has caught the interest of a really big studio and publisher, who is considering to handle the marketing and publishing for the game. They are obviously planning to make the game come out big with sales, going beyond Unity's thresholds. But since the game is made in Unity, they probably now have to reconsider that carefully, since that would cause a massive amount of fees with Unity's new pricing model. So any game using Unity is now an instant turn-off for publishers, also massively hurting indie devs who don't reach that income threshold yet.

What will happen now?

So, Unity can't be trusted anymore and should be seen as a major threat to us and the gaming industry. Even if they walk back on some of these decisions, what has been said, has been said. They showed that they don't care about destroying thousands of games, as long as it nets them profit, so who knows what they are going to do next?

I will pause the development of Elysian Eclipse and release the Patreon demo, including all the prototypes like Aquatic Stage for free today. I canceled my subscription and it will run out next year, so Unity isn't getting a single cent from my games anymore.

Unreal Eclipse?

In the meantime I'll focus on improving my C++ skills, so I can work more effectively in Unreal Engine 5. Unreal is the current industry leader, offering much better solutions for graphics and performance for 3D games. It is also partially open source and completely free until you reach $1 million in revenue.

It is unlikely that I will be able to just translate the game from C# to C++ and port it over, since it is using a lot of engine-specific features. This basically means, we will start from scratch... I can't tell yet how much work this will be or in what ways the game will change.

But one thing, you can always be certain of: I will NEVER BETRAY MY DREAM. I will finish this project, no matter who or what stands in my way. I hope you will continue to support me on this journey.

FAMILY & ORIGINS

The El family & Krypton

Krypton was a decadent civilization located on a moon near a large gaseous planet in the Orion belt, next to a green sun. In the past they had visited Earth and other planets expanding civilization, but their penchant for slavery, war, resource extraction and violence caused many of these projects to fail. Even in 10,500 BC the Kryptonians almost caused the terraforming of the Earth, melting the poles and destroying Atlantis and other civilizations, causing among other things the end of the Ice Age. Nearly 99% of humanity perished during that Kryptonian attack.

Over the centuries the Kryptonians lost the fuel necessary to travel across space and ended up confined to their planet, dedicated to warfare, genetic engineering-creating clones whose organs they needed to extend their lives-to pleasure and to exploiting the subsoil of their planet. The Kryptonians also established a dictatorship with a caste system based on genetic engineering and prohibited natural reproduction.

Jor-El and Lara were a couple of scientists critical of the system and supporters of the abolition of the caste system. They also fought against genetic engineering, violent repression, and the permanent destruction of the ecosystem. After a series of terrible earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and gas outbursts, it became clear that Krypton's core was collapsing, due to the energetic drilling and magnetic energy used in Krypton's industry. The Planet was doomed but the ruling caste ignored it. Jor-El and Lara had a daughter, Kala-El in a natural way against all the rules of Krypton. Lara managed to manufacture a small ship capable of making a space jump to save her daughter from the end of Krypton. General Zod stole her design and managed to build a larger fleet of ships but Jor-El managed to sabotage them and send the fleet to the Phantom Zone, a black hole near Krypton.

Lara decided to send Kala to Earth, confident that the culture of this planet was much more hopeful and kinder, and less prone to the mistakes of Krypton than other distant inhabited planets closer to them. Jor-El preferred to send her to New Genesis, another distant inhabited planet, because there Kala would receive less radiation and develop less extraordinary abilities that would allow her to live a normal life, but eventually Lara convinced him. During her journey to Earth and her growing period under a yellow sun, Kala would develop wonderful powers and could live a long life in the service of mankind, rehabilitating Krypton's legacy.

Within hours of Kala's birth, she was placed in the small ship, accompanied by the robot guide Kelex, whose memory was imprinted with the consciousness of Jor-El and Lara, as well as nearly all of Krypton's cultural heritage. They included several Kryptonian artifacts inside, such as a nearly indestructible ceremonial female ancestral caped suit with the crest of the House of El on its chest.

The ship was launched just hours before Krypton's demise and travelled through space for thirty years...

Joe&Martha Kent, Kansas life

Joe and Martha Kent were a Quaker farming couple whose farm was struck by the pod carrying Kala-El the 28th of February of 1918. Although owners of substantial property they were a very humble, cooperative, austere, devout, and civil rights-minded people. Martha Kent was a descendant of Kansas abolitionist guerrilla fighter John Brown. They both raised Clara very lovingly and unwilling to ask too many questions about the baby's origin. Clara was a very sickly child as her body did not adapt to the Earth. She was an affectionate and obedient girl and devoured books. The Kent family were avowed supporters of the New Deal and Joe Kent was a member of the local farmers union.

With puberty Clara developed very fast, and her superpowers began to appear. She soon began to excel in swimming and ballet, while still questioning her origins, but Joe forbade her to pursue a professional career to prevent her from taking advantage of her powers, and moreover he forbade her to use her superpowers to help others, fearful of humanity's reaction and wary of savior messiahs in the era of interwar dictators.

Clara rebelled against her father but eventually gave in, fearful of her own abilities and understanding her parents' position. During these years, Clara didn't fit in very well, but she had two best friends, Pete Ross, with whom she was secretly in love, and Lana Lang. Pete didn't know about her superpowers, but Lana did. In 1936 Joe Kent died of a heart attack, devastating her daughter. Clara was unable to go to college after her father's death and worked as a teacher and nurse's aide in Smallville. Her engagement to Pete Ross, her teenage sweetheart failed in 1939 when she revealed her powers to Pete and he panicked, although he later promised to keep the secret. In those times of sadness, Kelex, the Kryptonian robot, was activated, explaining to Clara her true origins, which filled her with confusion.

Between 1939 and 1941 Clara lived in Canada and Alaska searching for the Fortress of Solitude, a strange place Kelex was pointing, but with the outbreak of World War II she decided to enlist as a nurse in the Pacific, refusing to use her powers except to help the wounded, fearing to cause more harm than good. In late 1944, the hospital ship on which he was traveling, the USS Shuster, was torpedoed by the Japanese. Clara jumped into the water and managed to keep the ship afloat with her super strength until she managed to beach it. No one understood how miraculously the ship had stayed afloat and even levitated. The incident was kept secret. Clara got a permit to return home and she revisited Alaska where she found the Fortress of Solitude with the help of Kelex. There she was able to better understand her origins and began to train her superpowers.

After learning about the Holocaust first and the atomic bombs later, Clara decided to become Superwoman and help others with her superpowers dressed in the ceremonial Kryptonian costume of her ancestors. Her mother Martha supported her decision. She relocated to Metropolis, where in September 1945 she was hired as an assistant reporter by Major Louis Lane, who had just returned from Europe.

On October 1, 1945, Superwoman unveiled herself to the world and caused a huge sensation. The world was changed forever. Superwoman introduced herself to the newly formed United Nations, explaining her origins and her desire to help others and to stay out of political conflicts except to protect civilians.

Clara Kent began her double life as a journalist and as Superwoman. In July 1946, she defeated the invasion of General Zod and the survivors of Krypton. She also had to face other enemies such as the Intergang - an alliance of all organized crime in Metropolis and Gotham, Atomic Skull - an ex-Nazi agent with terrifying technology, Lex Luthor who began to develop his hatred and paranoia towards the superheroine, and his creations such as Metallo.

DAILY PLANET CHARACTERS

Perry Weiss, a major shareholder and editor in chief of the Daily Planet. Born in Odessa in 1886. Jewish immigrant from humble origins who became a skilled journalist and founded the Daily Planet as a tool of the liberal wing of the Metropolis Republican Party to unseat the city bosses of the time. Still a staunch liberal, he supported Roosevelt in 1932 and 1936, is an ally of Mayor LaGuardia. He won the Pulitzer Prize in the 1920s for defending the innocence of Sacco and Vanzetti. Friend and ally of Louis Lane's father. He is very demanding with his employees but is very fond of Clara. He admires and defends Superwoman despite Louis Lane's distrust. Best friend of Cat Grant.

Cat Grant, Co-chair of Perry Weiss, Pulitzer winner, closeted lesbian, and Ayn Rand Fan. Born 1901, she comes from a fine family of Metropolis Knickerbockers. She is like Louis the least liberal element of the newspaper. To protect herself she married a very old friend of her father who helped her lead a double life. For twenty years she lived with a painter named Margaret Ivy. Considered the best writer of the Daily Planet, in addition to being a journalist she has published two novels. Very elegant and popular in intellectual circles. She is tremendously authoritarian. She mistreats Clara a lot because she does not respect her authority and because of her different political ideas, but as Clara grows as a journalist and Cat Grant suspects that she is Superwoman, she will protect her and push her forward without Clara knowing it. Best friend of Perry Weiss

Jimmy Olsen and Lucy Weiss, best friends of Clara.

Jimmy is a junior urban photographer. He comes from a town in Massachusetts. He is 7 years younger than Clara. He is a party animal, friendly, generous, and somewhat naive. Yet he is a skilled photographer who has been able to capture the worst of the night and day of Metropolis. Miraculously he always gets the best pictures of Superwoman (Clara helps him a little). Very democratic and complains about working for a newspaper that is too conservative for his taste. Adores Clara whom he treats as his big sister. It doesn't even cross his mind that she is Superwoman. Jimmy thinks that Louis is a snob and a bigot.

Lucy is a senior political photographer and the only woman on photo reporting on the Daily Planet who works outside the fashion department. She is the eldest daughter of Perry Weiss. She is an intrepid photojournalist who gets overseas passes and has been to several military conflicts. A loyal friend of Clara, and a very serious and professional woman. She is suspicious of Clara's double identity but would never say anything. She is the same age as Clara and a lover of jazz and the more alternative circuits of Metropolis.

General Zod & Faora

Political dissidents like the El on Krypton on the other hand believed that Krypton's only salvation lay in emigrating and invading, terraforming, and exterminating other planets. They almost succeeded in a coup d'état but after their failure they and their henchmen tried to flee by space jumping their ships, Jor-El managed to sabotage the launch and send them to the Phantom Zone. Over the years they managed to escape and arrived on Earth in 1946, shortly after Clara showed herself to the world as Superwoman. They tried to exterminate all humanity, but Superwoman and the armies of Earth managed to defeat them. Their invasion caused 5,000 human casualties but could have caused complete extermination. The experience was traumatic for Clara because she had to send Zod and Faora back to the Phantom Zone where they would surely die. Zod, Faora and their henchmen had not yet developed the full powers of a yellow sun like Earth's and so several of them were killed by human bombs and missiles. Their remains were stored by Russians and Americans. Superwoman managed to expel all Kryptonian technology and weaponry into space so that humans would not use it for warfare.

Winslow Schott, former entrepreneur, and inventor of the 1920s toy business who was ruined in the Great Depression by banks and various betrayals. After a crime spree he was imprisoned in 1933 but escaped from prison recently completely crazed and ready to take revenge on the whole city using his inventions.

Brainiac "The Eternal Traveller"

An android resulting from the abhorrent merger of a famous astronaut and artificial intelligence, which was used by the first civilization of Krypton to collect information from other worlds. It is more than 100,000 years old. With the passage of time, he revealed against the Kryptonians, became evil and phobic to any form of life that he considered imperfect or inferior. It caused the destruction of many cultures. He wanders through space visiting planets and analyzing life forms. He probably has no enthusiasm for humans, much less for a descendant of the House of El.

Jesse is back directing episode 12 of Chicago PD and I’m just gonna say one thing about it bc my soul needs it lifted off me

The fact that he’s so excited is amazing and he’s literally having so much fun doing it which is incredible

But the elephant in the room has been swirling in my head for a few days and I’m over it:

If Hailey Upton gets as atrocious of a character exit as Jay Halstead did there are a couple of conclusions we can come to.

(Basically if Gwen decides that Hailey And Jay can’t find a way to re mend their relationship off screen in some sort of way at the same time as whatever Hailey’s next journey will be that is true to her character)

1. Gwen just doesn’t have what it takes to translate how a fandom can support and lift up a show (or understand how it’s impact benefits or hurts said show) (ie. pd having some of its lowest ratings in show history)

2. Gwen has some extremely strange obsession with women’s trauma making them “stronger” and that isn’t gonna be something she’s gonna let go of.

3. It won’t be a matter of “Jesse had other obligations and the schedule just didn’t work out”. It will be because she doesn’t actually care about these characters that much. If she wanted to she would and right now I see like a 5% chance if it’s entirely up to her bc the bottom line is really what she’s concerned about. And that’s sort of why I’m not a fan anymore bc that’s not worth my time and effort

✨other shows complete casts and crews have shown how much their fans matter to the core of their shows much better than Gwen ever has and I personally gave her the benefit of the doubt in the beginning that I no longer afford her✨

(And just to be 100% clear none of this is directed at any of the cast and only Gwen because they make none of these decisions at all:))))

Summary - The four walls of Upton’s General Store were all Hailey knew although she longed to see what else life had to offer. When a handsome soldier walks through the door, she thinks he might just be the answer to the life she wants to have. But it was 1944 and the country was at war. Would fate smile on her or would her heart be another casualty of the war?

Her legs moved without her having to tell them to, closing the space between them in a matter of strides as she threw herself around him, her arms snaking around his shoulders as she buried her face into his neck. Social practices be damned.

‘Jay,’ she breathed out, her voice shaking with the realisation that all of the nightmares had lied to her. He hadn’t died, he was right here, she could feel his warm skin under her hands, his breathing against her chest. He was alive, and he had come back to her as he had promised.

‘My love,’ he responded and she scrunched her eyes together desperately trying to control the tears that were threatening to spill out. His arms had wrapped around her waist, keeping her close from the moment she had reached him.

‘You’re alive,’ she said, pulling back just slightly so she could look at him. From the glow of the streetlight above she could see the markings of a scar running down the side of his face, temple to jaw. She let her fingers graze down it slightly, gentle against the puckered skin.

‘Not as handsome as when I left,’ he swallowed, his eyes dropping from hers.

‘Still handsome to me,’ she whispered as she pressed her lips to the jagged marking. She felt him let out a deep breath when her lips touched his skin.

‘How I missed you,’ he sighed, squeezing her gently with his exhale.

‘And I you,’ Hailey responded. He loosened his hold on her slightly and her feet returned to their position flat on the floor. Her hands slipped down his side silently checking to see if he had any more visible injuries, until they met his hands and she laced their fingers together.

She immediately wished she hadn’t.

Jay pulled up her left hand that was still joined with his but separated their fingers as the ring that was adorning it came into view.

‘You’re engaged,’ he said flatly, taking a step back and letting their hands drop. ‘I apologise,’ he was blinking quickly, likely to stem the tears. Hailey made no such effort, the salty water escaping from her eyes and leaving wet stains on her cheeks.

‘No,’ she said quickly, shaking her head. ‘It’s not like that.’

‘Tell me that’s not an engagement ring, Hailey and I’ll take you back into my arms,’ he pleaded.

But she couldn’t tell him that. As much as she wanted to. An engagement ring was what it was.

‘Then I apologise for my behaviour. I should not have come here. I wish you goodnight,’ he nodded his head curtly and turned on his heel.

‘Jay wait,’ she called after him, her voice cracking as she called his name but she was thankful when he paused. ‘Come back tomorrow, I’ll explain.’

He didn’t answer, just reached out and pressed a brown paper package into her hand, let his gaze fall to the ground and turned as he made his way back into the darkness, taking another piece of Hailey’s heart with him.

She stifled a sob, covering her mouth with her hand to quieten the noise but her heart was breaking. He was alive, he still wanted her, but he believed her to be in love with another. He hadn’t agreed to coming to see her tomorrow. But when she dropped to her knees by the side of her twin bed, she prayed with every ounce of faith that she had that he would.

His scar told her he’d been hurt, perhaps more so than she could see, maybe that was the reason for the lack of letters. His lack of love was obviously not, she could see that in his eyes. Well she had seen it until it had been replaced by a look of betrayal and hurt when he had seen her ring.

The package he had given her sat forgotten on her bedside, she had no impulse to open it, not until she had a chance to explain herself to him. She needed him to know the truth of what had happened in his absence, if he still wanted to walk away from her after that, she would let him.

She jumped every time the bell rang the following morning, her head flying up, eyes darting to see who it was who was entering the store. But still, the one person she wanted to enter never came.

The hours ticked by until her mother came to relieve her for lunch. It was an uncommon occurrence but Hailey thanked her. She stepped out the back door, a breath of fresh air would do her good, her mother told her.

He was standing just outside the door.

‘You came,’ she said, her eyes wide in both shock and hope.

‘You asked me to,’ Jay said, a small smile playing on his lips. His lips that she was longing to kiss again, but before that, she needed to explain. To tell him everything. ‘I could never say no to you, Hailey.’

‘I don’t want you to,’ she said, taking a step closer but pausing when he moved back. ‘I owe you an explanation.’ She swallowed deeply. ‘You were right. It is an engagement ring.’

She saw a twitch in Jay’s cheek but he steeled his expression and remained standing still.

‘But I don’t love him. My heart is still yours, it always has been since that first day. The engagement was my father’s idea, it’s a business arrangement more than a romantic proposition. Oscar, my fiancée, his father is in business with mine and they came to an agreement. I was to marry Oscar. You know I have no money, no prospects and for all they knew, I had no reason to say no.’

It was hard to tell him all of this, but Jay deserved to know the truth so Hailey persevered, ignoring how much her hands were sweating and how they wouldn’t stop trembling.

‘Your letters stopped and I didn’t know what had happened so I said yes. I made him agree to delay the wedding until the end of the war. I hoped, prayed, that you’d come home to me and I could tell them the truth, call off the wedding and marry you.’ Her eyes were boring into his, hoping he could tell exactly what she was feeling even if she wasn’t doing the best job of expressing herself. She was so nervous that her words wouldn’t be enough but she had to make him see. ‘But the end of the war came and you didn’t come home.’ The tears were making their way down her cheeks now but she didn’t care. He was still listening intently to every word she said.

‘But now you’re home,’ she smiled weakly. ‘If you meant what you said in your letters, about wanting to marry me. I’ll go to my father now and tell him the wedding is off.’

‘And your fiancée?’ Jay asked, his voice cracked on the final word.

‘He doesn’t love me, at least not in a way that would take too long to get over. He’s a good man, but I think he’d understand that my heart belongs to another.’

Jay didn’t say anything, but he didn’t turn and leave either. So Hailey asked the question that had been plaguing her since the night before.

‘Why did the letters stop?’ Her voice was timid.

For the first time since she had exited the shop, Jay’s eyes dropped to the floor.

‘I got hurt,’ he admitted, his voice shaking as if the events were too hideous to recall. ‘Taken to a hospital, they didn’t speak English and I was out of it for a long time so couldn’t get in contact with you.’

‘Your face,’ Hailey said gently.

He nodded, his eyes fluttering closed, ‘and my leg. It’s healed, well, as well as it could, I won’t be running a marathon but I can walk without a stick for the most part.’

‘I’m not the same man I was when I left my love,’ he said, his eyes swimming with tears as they met hers again. ‘I won’t hold you to a promise on a page if you don’t want to be with a broken man. You can marry Oscar. I won’t stand in your way.’

‘Stand in my way,’ Hailey said firmly, taking another step towards him and this time he didn’t flinch. ‘You’re not broken, a little bruised maybe, but my love for you is just as strong as it was last year. This doesn’t change that.’

‘I love you Hailey Upton,’ he whispered, reaching out to push a strand of hair behind her ear, cradling her jaw. ‘Will you do me the honour of being my wife?’

It was what she had waited so long for, for him to say those words, she could only nod in response, her voice having abandoned her.

He reached forward, sealing his lips gently to hers.

In that moment it was as though all the pieces of her heart had fitted back together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle with no gaps. Kissing Jay was just as sweet as she remembered, her dreams hadn’t embellished it at all.

‘Should we tell Oscar or my father first?’ Hailey asked when Jay finally pulled back.

‘It is up to you my love, but I will be by your side for both if you would like me to be. When was the wedding due to be?’

‘Next week,’ Hailey admitted.

‘Good thing I didn’t delay then,’ he chuckled.

‘Will?’ Hailey asked quickly, the name tumbling from her lips.

‘I’m Jay,’ he said softly with a chuckle. ‘But Will is fine too, not a scratch, at least physically.’

‘You found him?’ Hailey asked.

‘He found me, he’s coming back here too. He wants to meet you.’

‘He does?’

‘You’re my family Hailey, that means you're his as well.’

Hailey felt her cheeks warm, family. Jay was her family. And she would be his wife. Once she had told the other men in her life what was to happen, or more accurately, what wasn’t going to happen, they would be wed.

They decided to tell Oscar first, Hailey’s father wouldn’t be able to force the marriage if the other part of the couple had already agreed to call off the nuptials.

He took the news surprisingly well.

‘You’re a lucky man, Jay Halstead,’ he said, offering his hand for Jay to shake. He held on slightly too long so he could add, ‘and thank you for your service.’

Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line.

‘I always knew your heart wasn’t in it Hailey,’ Oscar said, turning to Hailey. ‘I would have been a good husband to you but I’m glad you’re happy.’

‘I know Oscar, thank you,’ Hailey said, leaning forward to gently press a kiss to his cheek.

‘How did your father take the news?’ He asked curiously.

‘We’re to tell him this afternoon,’ Hailey admitted. ‘I don’t think he’ll be as responsive as you.’

‘I would have thought not, but please tell him I won’t marry a girl who loves another man. Especially a man who fought for this country and returned home to his love. I’m not that kind of man.’

They bade him farewell and strolled back down the street. Hailey reached across to grasp his hand, her ring finger bare again as she had returned the ring to Oscar. It was not hers to keep and soon it would be replaced by a wedding band.

‘Are you worried?’ Jay asked quietly.

‘Yes,’ Hailey said truthfully. ‘But it won’t change my decision,’ she added quickly, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. ‘I will marry you with or without his permission, but I want him to be happy for me.’

‘And your mother?’

‘She wants me to be happy, she always has. But I don’t know if father disagrees if she’ll be able to go against him and be there for us.’

‘She’ll be there in your heart if she can’t be there in person,’ Jay offered.

‘As will your mom,’ Hailey said.

They fell into a peaceful silence as they walked past the store fronts that lined the street.

‘Did you open the package?’ Jay asked as they walked past Mrs Smith’s store.

‘Not yet,’ Hailey admitted. ‘I didn’t want to until you knew the truth.’

‘I could tell you what it contains?’ Jay offered.

‘I’ll get it when we get back to the store and we can open it together.’

Just read on Wikipedia that Heinlein ran for California State Assembly as a left-wing Democrat in the prewar era. Any idea what caused his change of heart towards crypto-fascism?

Like a lot of people, Heinlein's politics were bizarre and internally contradictory.

An Upton Sinclair Socialist who became a supposed libertarian who was fascinated by Social Credit who also believed in the need for a militaristic authoritarian one-world government but also supported Barry Goldwater for President and was very in favor of both nuclear war and Vietnam but was also an anti-racist but also had deeply weird views about gender and sexuality that I really hope he never acted on...it's hard even to describe this as a standard "red to brown" ideological shift.

SUPPORT STARBUCKS UNIONS

Upton Sinclair tries to go up to the counter, but the Starbucks is closed. Starbucks fired all their workers from this location for unionizing.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while. We here at Literary Starbucks have followed the news about Starbucks workers’ fight to unionize, and we want to use the platform we have to support them and uplift their voices. 

Starbucks workers across the nation have been unionizing their workplaces to ensure a more democratic, safe, and equitable environment for all employees. The first United States Starbucks to successfully unionize its workers was in Buffalo, NY, in December 2021. Since then, more Starbucks locations all over the country have voted to unionize!

Predictably, Starbucks is not thrilled about this, and has been actively union-busting. As linked above in the Upton Sinclair post, there are many examples of Starbucks closing locations that voted to unionize or firing pro-union workers, but Starbucks has gone even further. They have cut hours for pro-union employees, increased managerial presence in stores in order to monitor union activities, and, recently and abhorrently, claimed that Starbucks will support its workers who are seeking abortion services—but only if they aren’t part of a union.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has “accused Starbucks of more than 200 labor law violations spanning over two dozen types of unfair labor practices.” In addition to being morally despicable, Starbucks’ union-busting practices are actually illegal.

Literary Starbucks supports workers’ right to unionize and stands with the Starbucks partners who are unionized and/or fighting to unionize. We condemn Starbucks’ anti-union position.
