Tanacetum vulgare (tansy) and Rubus armeniacus (Himalayan/Armenian blackberry)

Yesterday I went to downtown with a particular goal in mind. I wanted to take postcard-like photos of flowers with famous Vancouver landmarks in the background. The results were a bit disappointing and all I found was a nice show of Rudbeckia by the Science Center (yesterday's post). However, I did manage to get some shots of BC Place Stadium (our local football palace) with two familiar 'invasive weeds' in the foreground. in this sense my photography project was modestly successful.

Tansy was brought to North America by early European settlers for its purported medicinal benefits. As with the dandelion, the first tansy seeds arrived in a doctor's bag. Obviously, tansy has made itself at home and I see it all over the place.

The Himalayan blackberry was introduced to North America in 1885 by the American plant breeder Luther Burbank. According to legend, Burbank received the seeds from a person in India and naturally concluded this blackberry was from the Himalayas. Actually the guy in India got them from a collector in Armenia. Incidentally, this blackberry species may be extremely difficult to eradicate (and it has quite dangerous thorns) but it produces first-rate fruit.

what is going on between sturgeon and fangtooth, and sturgeon and tansy?

long story short, it's complicated! i will go in depth below :3

Sturgeon made Fangtooth her Lionheart in an attempt to force a friendship between them. She also has a bit of a crush on her and thinks Fangtooth is very pretty, but would be completely happy with just having a friend. She has always been envious of her siblings ability to find others they connect with, it has always been difficult for her.

She has tried time and time again to connect with Fangtooth, in her own way. But she unintentionally comes off as rude and Fangtooth doesn't think Sturgeon likes her at all, let alone wants to be friends. Fangtooth just fundamentally doesn't understand Sturgeon. Doesn't understand her humor, doesn't understand she isn't trying to be mean, just all together they don't mesh well due to miscommunications.

Because of this, Fangtooth avoids Sturgeon and only interacts with her in regards to her Lionheart duties.

As Sturgeon accepts that she is meant to be alone, Tansy and Cricket enter her life and offer the friendship Sturgeon has always wanted. Sturgeon doesn't know how to react to this and still comes off as rude. But Tansy doesn't take offense to this, she understands that's just the way Sturgeon speaks. She greatly admires Sturgeon and appreciates her efforts in helping Cricket and the other Daisys.

Tansy puts in the effort to learn more about Sturgeon, and spend time with her. She sees how busy and stressed Sturgeon is, and tries to find ways to help her relax. She offers to help Sturgeon with whatever it is she needs to do, as she wants to help Sturgeon accomplish her goal of helping the Daisys.

Sturgeon, who has longed for a partner this whole comic, accepts.

This is the first time Sturgeon has accepted help from someone who wasn't manipulated or blackmailed into it. She doesn't know quite what to think of Tansy, but I think she has learned that she can trust her. She does enjoy spending time with her, but I don't think she views her romantically yet.

And unfortunately, in their grave digging task, Fangtooth happens upon them and Sturgeon has to yell at her to make her leave, which just damages that relationship more.

So to summarize, Sturgeon likes fangtooth, fangtooth doesnt like sturgeon. Tansy likes Sturgeon, Sturgeon is learning she can trust Tansy and is trying to figure out what to make of her.

We'll see where these relationships develop from here, whether it be romantically or strong friendships or maybe even watch them crash and burn (:
