In time, several high-rises will be constructed on a 10-acre property in Penticton across from the city’s hospital.
The decade-long project, announced on Friday by the city and a developer, could cost as much as $800 million.
However, that’s down the road, assuming city council gives it the green light. This winter, the industrial site at 1704 Government St. will be turned into an emergency winter shelter for the homeless.

When I say Idk how to live normally anymore since becoming homeless I mean it. I'm like someone walking around with a gaping gunshot wound. I'm constantly mask-off in public but usually on a mission so I'm never speaking to anyone, but they can tell I'm barely surviving.
If you encounter me in public, I hope your empathy overrides your discomfort for me and my circumstances. Listen, I know why you're scared, but if I can survive homelessness, I think a lot of people can. Everything is far from hopeless, but still quite bleak. That's why we need drastic societal change quickly. And this time I'm gonna need you to take the reigns from my hands sometimes. I've done the heavy lifting my whole life. Please help. Do something. I would do it for you a thousand times over for nothing. Why can't you do that for me for a handsome reward instead? Do you have no hopes left? No dreams? No love for humanity left in you?
I really don't need anything anyone can't give me crumbs of. Consideration, recognition, validation, encouragement. It's not a lot to ask for really, but it's very hard for people to learn to do. So, please, it will make your life easier, it will help you to cooperate. Be kind. It's not for naught. And it's free!

What do you do when it becomes too dangerous to stay in your home, and you must take whatever you can carry and flee? What if you have to leave the country of your birth and seek asylum in another country, among people who speak a different language? When your very survival forces you to travel by whatever means you can - by foot, by boat, by truck, by the back of a donkey, whatever you have - you learn to appreciate the compassion of strangers. Today we talk to some of the elected officials of Chicago who find themselves in the middle of a controversy regarding immigrants who have been transported to Chicago and are seeking asylum. They are being temporarily housed in police stations while more permanent housing is being considered from the conversion of currently vacant buildings. But some Chicago residents are protesting that the longtime homeless population should be considered for housing and services first, before the immigrants. Is there enough room and enough resources for everybody?

The anticipated growth of cities creates unprecedented sustainability challenges.
The global urban population is expected to grow by 63 percent between 2014 and 2050 – compared to an overall global population growth of 32 percent during the same period. Megacities with over 20 million inhabitants will see the fastest increase in population – and at least 13 new megacities are expected by 2030, in addition to the 28 existing today. The fastest growing urban centres contain around a million inhabitants, and are located in the lower-middle-income countries in Asia and Africa.
The anticipated growth of cities creates unprecedented sustainability challenges. Increasing demands for energy, water, sanitation, education, healthcare, housing, transport and public service are testing the limits of city infrastructures. In 2015, 828 million people lived in temporary housing that lack basic services like sanitation and access to drinking water. Six million new people move to such housing every year, thus ever increasing the demand for services. Cities are responsible for 67 percent of the global energy demand and consume 40 percent of world’s energy overall. Urban centres are responsible for 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. In addition, urban centers increasingly experience natural disasters. They can also witness social tension brought on by rising inequality and unemployment, air and water pollution, traffic congestion, and urban violence and crime.
At the same time, urban centres offer tremendous opportunities for economic development. Eighty percent of the world’s gross domestic product is generated in cities. Urban citizens earn on average three times the income of their rural counterparts. Cities have a concentration of universities and are critical venues of research and innovation, political activism and cultural exchange. People living in larger cities tend also to have a smaller energy footprint, require less road and communication infrastructure, consume fewer resources, and have higher productivity levels. For example, according to earlier research, a city of eight million has 15 percent more productivity, e.g. wages and patents produced per capita, and 15 percent fewer infrastructure needs, e.g. gas stations, electric wires and roads, than do will two cities of four million each.
Smart Cities have emerged as one response to the challenges and opportunities created by rapid urbanization. The report “Smart Sustainable Cities – Reconnaissance Study” presents the results of a study, conducted by UNU-EGOV and funded by IDRC, that examined the thesis that Smart Cities advance sustainable development. The study analysed 876 scientific publications, recommendations from 51 think tank organizations and 119 concrete Smart City initiatives. Researchers also conducted several interviews with city managers, planners and researchers responsible for successful Smart City initiatives.

Govt’s plans to quietly sell public and state house land to private developers
Government plans to sell public and state house land to private developers risks making the outlook for tens of thousands of New Zealand families worse, says Monte Cecilia Housing Trust CEO Bernie Smith.
It’s been dubbed the sale of the century: in Auckland, 230ha to 270ha of public or state land is quietly being sold to private or sharemarket-listed developers, to build free-market homes across

The Collector's design as a teenager was inspired by this one dude I saw late at night on the train wearing an oodie.
My headcanon for Teen Colly is that Luz introduces to them video games around that age. From that moment, his hobby of gaming has become intense. ;,D

“akschually, it’s classist to say people shouldn’t visually modernize Victorian homes!!! what if they can’t afford restoration?!?!?!”
then how the hell could they afford to IKEA-fy the place, Deborah? you have to pay contractors to do all those major modifications, after all, just as you would to restore
nobody’s mad about temporary, cheap wall-to-wall carpeting to make the floors warmer. that can be removed whenever someone else wants it gone, down the line, and the wood underneath will still be there
we’re mad about knocking down all the interior walls, replacing sconces and chandeliers with recessed can lighting, and painting the whole place greige

Two Toronto churches say they've been forced to close their doors to refugee claimants seeking shelter after housing hundreds of asylum seekers since last summer.
Pilgrim Feast Tabernacles in Etobicoke and Dominion Church International in North York have shut down their shelter operations for asylum seekers in the past two weeks largely due to financial difficulties but are exploring alternative options to continue meeting the rising demand.
"We are grateful for donations. A lot of donations have been coming in. But with time, people stopped giving money," said Pastor Eddie Jjumba, who's been overseeing the makeshift refugee shelter at Dominion Church International, adding volunteers can't afford to buy food or services like garbage removal and cleaning.
"We have come to a point where we are practically not able to afford those things."
