Rik and Ade Fest 2024

And now for a fourth year running: it's the Rik and Ade Fest! We've been trying to get your attention for the past 10 weeks, so hopefully you're listening! Give this blog a follow NOW to stay up to date as this year's fest progresses. Right on!

As usual, you can submit up to 3 prompts for fanart and/or fanfic for any piece of media featuring Rik and/or Ade. Also, as usual, you don't need to commit to making art or fic later to submit a prompt. We need more prompts than participants!

PLEASE READ THIS BIT! 🚨

Unusually, there's an extra rule in place for prompts this year. We're asking you to please not send in any prompts for The Young Ones or Bottom - just for this year! Next year, you can go mad!

Why are we asking this of you? Is it just that we're bastards? Well, we've noticed an (unsurprising) bias towards these two shows throughout fests, so we're trying to give Rik and Ade's lesser known/popular media a chance.

If you do accidentally submit a TYO or Bottom prompt this year, never fear! We won't be adding it to the prompt list this time, but we will hold on to it and add it next year. As well as this, all the previous unclaimed prompts for TYO and Bottom will still be available for artists and writers to claim and make work for this year.

But anyway, here's the ol' reliable Google Form for submissions. It will be open from today (23rd March) until 1st April.

We are aware our fanart books currently have broken links. This is a recent occurrence. Ao3 cannot host pictures, so all fests' art is hosted elsewhere. We're looking for a new host site and may have to contact certain past artists for their art again once one is found. We intend to have this issue fixed before this year's fest is revealed in June. We apologise if this discourages artists from participating, though we would always encourage you to share your art on Tumblr, Instagram, or elsewhere too once a fest is revealed, in any case.

Is there a ship that you feel a bit guilty about? Like i know its a terrible pairing, but im fascinated by the toxicity of them together and want to explore it?

I’ll be honest, since exiting teenhood and shedding all the terrible media/fanbases/ships that I fell into there, I don’t have a whole lot of love for toxicity for the sake of toxicity. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to be superior in saying that. Nor am I saying there is nothing interesting to be explored in a toxic ship. I’m just saying, that while I do enjoy angst, I like couples that help each other through it, rather than cause it. Very much a fan of tender ships, who don’t cause each other problems (at least not intentionally), but help each other through their problems (within reason, of course, as ships like these can go too far the other way, as well, with codependency). With that being said, I may have a few, small exceptions.

Richard Dangerous/Sir Adrian Dangerous (assuming that The Dangerous Brothers is just a stage name, not an indication that they are actually brothers) - I think these two count, especially as Richard’s anger and malice felt absolutely genuine and one-sided in the early skits, compared to the mutual and performative feel, later. The idea of Richard Dangerous realising his terrible treatment of Sir Adrian and working to do better is an interesting one. Admittedly, the Dangerouses get away with a lot by being so cartoonish and ridiculous. If they were any less so, I probably would not have shipped them at all.

Sam Emerson/Alan Frog (The Lost Boys), within the very specific context of the Lost Boys sequels, and the original script’s idea of vampiric amnesia. This version of the ship is based on the idea of Alan being a half vampire, and Sam being a full one. Sam, being a full vampire has no recollection of his human life, including being sweethearts with Alan. However, he is playing on Alan’s affection for him to manipulate him. Again, I only see this as happening initially, with Sam later feeling regret and developing feelings, himself. Weyoun 5/Dukat (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) - This is toxic by default, as both of these characters have highly dubious morals and attitude problems, and I cannot see them truly respecting each other, more than they do anyone else. When I think of this ship, it tends to be in the more comical light of them being the Basil and Sybil Fawlty of space.

Trigger/Marlene (Only Fools and Horses) - Maybe a softer example, depending on how you look at it. There are many joking implications that Marlene went elsewhere to become pregnant, as Boycie could not do the job. Trigger was included in those jokes. When I saw Trigger and Marlene slow dancing at Rodney and Cassandra’s wedding, I had the idea of them having had an affair, long before her pregnancy. What if Marlene wanted to get pregnant by someone, if not Boycie, and Trigger felt like a safe man to try with? What if she never actually let him know her intentions? This is a terrible thing to do, and I felt quite bad for putting that on Marlene as she’s quite the sweetheart. I picture the affair as a short one, that started with a solid and terrible intention, but ended up a relationship based on comfort and security.

The dynamic in Rise between the rest of the team and Leo is. so fucking funny. Because like you've got these three extremely talented individuals who all seem like perfectly reasonable people at first glance, right, but then if you squint hard enough you realize they're actually all batshit insane (affectionate) and the clown boy standing behind them is secretly their common sense.

Clown boy will occasionally put himself and the others in danger to Prove Himself or Prove Someone Wrong (see Minotaur Maze and the movie) but like otherwise... i think people forget Leo's overwhelmingly the voice of reason in most situations?

Raph, Mikey, and Donnie are all incredibly powerful boys with very specific skill sets. They are also, as a direct result of this, the WORST decision-makers on god's green earth lmao. When presented with a problem, Raph will smash, Donnie will blow shit up, and Mikey will razzmatazz. They will all run straight toward death with the same oblivious enthusiasm of a dog about to run straight into a screen door. None of them realize this and all of them think they are Extremely Good At Problem-Solving.

And the guy cursed with the common sense to realize this is literally the LAST person anyone would expect.

When you look closely, the entirety of Rise is actually a chronicle of Leo trying to find new and creative ways to keep this team of superpowered fools alive while simultaneously white-knuckling his Cool Fun Guy persona so the others don't realize he's secretly the Boring Responsible One. Haha, you know what would be Cool and Fun, guys? Not going after the Spine Breaking Bandit lol. Getting home before the sun goes up lol. Evacuating that civilian lol. Not telling the guy dangling me off a roof "you won't, no balls" lol.

The sacred struggle of every iteration of Leonardo is thanklessly wrangling the most trigger-happy siblings in the world, and Rise Leo has not escaped it. He just does an occasional shenanigan to avoid detection and his brothers fall for it every time.

My logic is that he does not need me to take a bullet for him, because he's basically a looney tune. Since there are so many Riks, I am being very strict with myself and trying to differentiate my responses to them all, rather than just going YEP YEP YEP to all of them. 😂

That said, would still totally adopt him (and Sir Adrian) because I just think it would be funny.
