The Dragon Prince Whumplist
Tumblr media
Character: Callum (voiced by Jack DeSena)
Age Rating: TV-Y7 (FV)
Show available on Netflix
Genre: Animation, Found Family, Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Synopsis: In the magical land of Xadia, magic comes from six primal sources: the sun, moon, stars, sky, earth and ocean. When human mages create a seventh kind of magic -- dark magic -- they start capturing and harvesting the unique magical creatures they need as ingredients, which sparks a war between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms. Three kids from opposite sides of the conflict -- two princes and an elven assassin sent to kill them -- discover a secret that could change everything and decide to join forces and go on an epic journey. That trek could be their only hope of ending the war and restoring peace to both worlds. (Via Google)
Notes: This show is GOOD. If you like ATLA, you'll enjoy this. It gets progressively darker and more violent as the show goes on, so fair warning for that. The relationships between the characters are amazing, and there's also great diverse representation! I highly recommend.
TW's: Violence, mild blood/gore (audio/visual gets worse in later seasons), death, child abuse/neglect, child endangerment, emetophobia (very mild), mild torture
List Key:
bold = most whump, best whump, or favorite whump scenes

Moon family and the Second Act
I’ve been thinking about the next act for the Dragon Prince , especially when it comes to the Moon family adults.
In the first act (seasons 1-3) we saw the story mostly focus on the human parents and parental figures.
Viren got a lot of screen time and development, going from High Mage to self appointed regent, to traitor to king and back to traitor/criminal. He has a long way to go and we will see him develop and grow in the next act. He’s a bit more of an outlier at this point as he is more central to the main plot.
Amaya also went on a big physical and emotional journey from Kattolis to Lux Aurea, from seeing elves as monsters to allies, even falling with one in the process.
Finally we have Harrow, who despite being dead or mostly dead since 1x03 has also had an arc with character development. We saw him go from an advocate and fan of dark magic to a critic who deeply regrets his past reliance on such power and who, at the end of his life, chose to abstain from its use.
So with the first placing the focus on the development of the adult humans and parents then logically the second act (seasons 4 and 5) should focus on the adult elves, especially those from our favourite Moon family.
So how would this potentially look like? Well with 3 of the 4 parents currently stuck inside coins season 4 should focus on and end with them being freed from their coin prisons. During this mission the character focus and development could be shown in two distinct ways.
The first is to focus on Ethari, the only elven parent currently not stuck in a coin as he tries to save his husband and his best friends. We could see him discover Runaan’s flower, see him adjusting to the changes in his world, life and his journey to free his loved ones. This would give us more insight into his personality, strengths, weaknesses and skills as he hopefully makes his way out of the Silvergrove and into Xadia.
The second way is through flashbacks. This is a great way to fill in some important gaps while giving Lain, Tiadrin and Runaan some important screen time that can flesh out their personalities and their relationships with one another and with Rayla. At the moment there are two important moments or periods in time that we need to see: The day that Lain and Tiadrin became Dragon Guards and the moments and the aftermath of Runaan, Ethari and Rayla leanring about Lain and Tiadrin’s apparent desertion.
The first could show just how Dragon Guards get appointed, the relationship dynamics between Lain, Tiadrin, Runaan and Ethari and everyone’s reaction to this huge, life changing moment.
The second could show Runaan, Ethari’s and Rayla’s reactions and feeling surrounding their friends/parents cowardice, how Runaan came to be given this mission, how Rayla was appointed this mission and if there was any opposition to said appointment and could show us the conversation that Ethari and Runaan had about Rayla before they left for Kattolis.
Now as for when the trio could be freed my guess is 4x08 or 4x09 with Runaan losing his arm in 4x09 or 5x01. Putting their freeing in the mid act finale makes a lot of sense as given that this is a 3 act story the second act always ends badly for the heroes with the villain or antagonist usually coming out as the victor. So having Runaan, Lain and Tiadrin returning at the end of season 4 gives the heroes 1 big and important victory before the tables begin to turn on them.
It also ensures that these three parents have enough time to adjust to the changes in their world and personal lives before the second time skip. This is especially important for Runaan as he, with the focus he had in season 1, his injuries, including his binding and his currently tense relationship with Rayla and his future interactions with Callum and Ezran is the most likely to have his own arc and focus in season 5 and beyond. He will go through a lot but will start forging a new future for himself with the help of his friends, family and his new magical prosthetics courtesy of Ethari.
Season 5 would start out messy and confusing but would ultimately end with the trio letting go of their prejudices and learning to trust and respect humans and vice versa (most likely Callum and Ezran as they try to get to know them and hopefully forgive Runaan for killing Harrow). Their relationship with Rayla will also have its highs and lows but will ultimately come out by seasons end.
Then when the final act (seasons 6 and 7) begins they will be there to fight for the future that their daughter has been fighting for since 1x03.

To talk to Rex, you need to bring him a worthy gift. / King or peasant don't matter to me, so long as you're offering something of value.
I was thinking about these two failed... exchanges shall we say, with Ezran trying hard (and able to, generally) to be a good diplomatic ruler, and trying to offer up what he thinks is valuable. Twice now, he's emphasized the importance of his father's crown, only to have it diminished, which struck extra hard given that this season also emphasized the burden of ruling and how much it weighs on him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It makes me wonder if, now that things have 'seemingly' settled with the prison, if S6 will focus a lot more on Ezran and Pentarchy politics (especially if Zubeia is MIA and that its own issue for Xadia to deal with and Ezran to worry about). We see Callum and Ezran have a brief disagreement this season about next steps, Rayla and Ezran ultimately being on the same page...
I wonder if this dual discard will weigh on Ezran further, like no one's taking his position as king seriously, and be exacerbated by future issues. If he and Callum will have a bigger disagreement (maybe over the coins / Runaan, like in Ezran's pre-S4 short story) and it'll all come to a head with Ezran pulling rank to try and get Callum to listen to him and/or enforce some measure of control... Only for Callum to defy him anyway (just like Janai) and carry on regardless, inadvertently reaffirming that Ezran's position as king isn't important, when it's clearly one of the most important thing to Ez as a character.
It seems like we're in store to get a really painfully messy arc for Ezran, and a future Broyals conflict perhaps, and damn is S6 gonna be great if we get it.

Was thinking about the Gifts scene because it was one of my favourites and has made me cry every time, thus far, and something that stuck out to me the first time has now collected more thoughts, in terms of parallels and parental relationships.
Ezran and Rayla both sacrifice something in remembrance to their fathers. For Ezran, it’s the symbol of him finding a way to both honour his father’s memory and take a better path than he did. The way they worked his short story and musings over his father’s sword directly into the show was delightful and heartfelt. Ezran acknowledges that the crown isn’t made of precious metals or bearing special jewels, but it carries an emotional weight and shows his humility and his own strength as a king. It says just as much about Ezran as it does about Harrow, if not arguably more.
Then you have Rayla stepping up first (was anyone else relieved she wasn’t offering herself up to be eaten?) and arguably with the biggest sacrifice. As she says, these blades are all she has to remember Ethari and Runaan, two of her parents, by. Unlike Ezran, who shares in his grief with Callum and the rest of the council about Harrow, there is no one left who remembers Ethari and Runaan the way she does and did. There are no more family heirlooms waiting for her. She can’t even truly go back to where they raised her.
Ezran gives up something he had crafted in Harrow’s memory, and Rayla gives up the one and final gift her fathers gave to her, her most constant companions in the two years she was gone, and her last line of defense.
Then you have Callum, who offers up Ibis’ staff. Now, Callum’s statement here is still meaningful. The staff here has been incredibly helpful, he’s presumably seen Ibis more than a few times over the past few years with Ezran and Zym assumedly visiting regularly, Ibis taught him the spell he uses the most this season and the one that let him save Rayla. But it’s hardly a parent-child bond or even a mentor-mentee bond.
So what does Callum have from a parent? Well... the Key of Aaravos, really. He has his sketchbook, which is full of spells Rex Igneous would never be interested in (it’s not even his primal) and he has this magical, mystical key that unlocks something of great power. And I want to write a bigger post about how I think it relates to his identity and sense of self worth as a mage as well, but I do think given we see Callum lighting a candle for Harrow and that it’s attached to Harrow’s letter as it is, as well as some things Callum’s VA, Jack De Sena has said, in addition to this panel from TTM:
Tumblr media
J: [Regarding trauma and growing up]  I think that’s part of, just to speak to like, right, season four stuff, that’s part of the I think some of the anger he holds about Rayla leaving is that like, “we went through all this really intense stuff together and that—like, I’m cut off from that, in some ways.” T: Yeah. J: This—this person who you shared that with is gone, and—
Tumblr media
Through The Moon makes it clear that Callum hasn’t moved on from grieving Harrow, if indeed you can ever quite let a grief like that go in the first place. We know from 4x03 that Ezran likewise still feels hurt, pain, and anger regarding the death of their parents, but he also had Callum to mourn with, other people to remember with, and Zym most of all as a silver lining.
We know from 4x01 he’s been quietly but actively grieving Rayla for a while now, too, and then she shows up. It’s clear that Callum has emotionally closed himself off in her absence and in her return (seriously, did anyone ever have to prompt him into talking in s1-s3?) which makes sense, since over the course of their journey she became his main confidant and peer. But, as Jack de Sena noted, he was cut off from that. His grieving stagnated in more ways than one because he couldn’t precisely move on, even before she left, never mind after.
Now he’s a loose end, frayed and jagged, still grieving in multiple ways. And with the coins now in Rayla’s possession, S5 may force him to confront just how not okay with Harrow’s death he still is in some ways, now that freeing his father’s killer is something he’ll both want and loathe to help with, in addition to being further entrenched in Aaravos’ schemes.
What will Callum hold onto, and what will he let go of?

Thinking about, while Rex is undeniably biased, he presents such a painful account of Avizandum for all the trio here, but especially Ezran and Callum. Hearing that their mother’s death was essentially, or at least possibly, little more than an enjoyable sport for Avizandum? And yet Ezran is still angry on his, or at least Zym’s, behalf, as we can see how close he is to Zym and Zubeia; he loves them too, and so he holds both anger, pain, and love for Avizandum in his heart, all at the same time

thinking about how arc 1 was all about how rayla, callum, and ezran weren't like runaan ("i didn't kill anybody!" "your leader did - what's the difference?), viren ("would you, viren?" -> "well then you found me: i am prince ezran"), and harrow ("I don't want to be that kind of king") and how s4-s6 is gonna be about how and why they are all similar in spite of those best efforts, because it's not that clear cut and simple

At the Same Time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I was thinking about S4, specifically two of the three main arcs, as Ezran’s speech in 4x03 sets the stage, thematically, for the entire season. It’s not hard to see how it connects to how Janai has to deal with lingering human vs elf sentiments or in her impatient brother who refuses to see the wisdom in Ezran’s ideology. It’s also not hard to see how it connects to Callum’s feelings towards Rayla, given that, “We have to acknowledge the weight of the pain and loss, but open up our eyes and allow ourselves to hope and maybe forgive and love again.”
However, I was thinking about my post in which I claim the Soren-Claudia reunion scene in 4x07 and the two cakes Janaya scene in 4x08 operate as a Mouthpiece for what Rayllum isn’t saying overtly to one another (for more reason than one) and realizes that applies doubly in Janai and Amaya’s case not necessarily for Callum, but also for Rayla.
Because we can view Ezran’s speech as it is straightforwardly, and it is very thematically rich. But if we connect it further to Ezran and Janai’s similarities throughout the season, something a little bit deeper takes shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is to say: how you maintain two forces and desires that seem utterly opposing? Just have
Two Cakes
Amaya argues that Janai’s two paths are not mutually exclusive to each other. Unlike what Karim believes, Amaya posits that Janai should, “Forget Karim: this is not about him. What life do you want?” Forget about the nerves and anxieties in your heart or even about pleasing people (even her as Janai’s fiancee) to determine what does Janai want. She wants her love but also to follow what she feels is her duty, and Amaya reaffirms that Janai can have both. She does not have to sacrifice one for the other (even if it means risking her life in the following episode in order to hold onto the crown).
Janai’s views these two paths and desires as things that cannot be reconciled at first. This is why when she turns to Amaya after the fight in 4x09 and states the future will be beautiful while looking at her future, it’s meaningful and full circle. But the tribunal verdict also proves that while Janai is determined to at first reconcile justice and compassion, she is also aware that having both her place as queen and her place at Amaya’s side will be difficult - not impossible - to likewise reconcile.
This mirrors what Ezran says in his speech about having to acknowledge the weigh of the pain and loss, but to also push forward. To not forget how you have suffered, but to not let yourself be defined by it as well. To realize that pain and love are not mutually exclusive, but largely two sides of the same coin, and you cannot lose sight of either if you want to move forward in a way that will actually heal you. You cannot move forward through denial, but you also cannot move forward if you do not acknowledge your grief.
On the one hand, we do see this with Callum’s side of Rayla and Callum’s reconciliation (part 1) arc this season. But I think if we keep this idea of opposition in mind, we get a peek into why the 4x09 scene exists for Rayla, after everything.
In one of the few scenes where she gets to talk about her own feelings, we know Rayla has come to realize or reaffirm that her paranoia and mission to kill Viren made her “risk losing the best thing she ever had: [Callum].” She’s spent the season dealing with the fallout, whether it’s Callum being almost unable to look at her, not wanting to speak with her, still having walls up and not discussing their relationship even as he begins to heavily thaw throughout 4x06-4x08.
Then rather than paranoia, Rayla is confronted with absolute proof, when she also knows Viren’s plans are deadly and dangerous and would put Callum in the most absolute danger possible (re: Aaravos’ possession). Still, she holds back. She lingers.
Are these two paths, two desires, her mission and the love of her life, doomed to be mutually exclusive, or to have the former tear apart the latter? Can she go after him and still have Callum’s love?
And Callum, through his own journey that I wanna talk more about, says (in spite of everything), “Yes.”
Tumblr media
She can have two cakes (even if it hurts).
