Apeiron's Ancient Rules/Taboos
Oh, don't mind me! I'm just gonna list down all of the ancient rules the Apeirons should follow. This was recorded by Ms. Radio, so if you're having trouble remembering, I can give you a help!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abstain from beans.
Do not pick up what has fallen.
Touch not a white rooster.
Do not poke the fire with swords.
Do not jump over a crossbar.
Do not cut wood on a main road.
Do not enter the hall in new garments. Enter the hall from the right and leave from the left.
Do not keep swallows around your house.
Do not sleep on a grave.
Make the bed as soon as you wake up, leaving no imprint of your body.
I never been taught or researched much about Pythagoreanism, so if anyone knows history, leave a comment on what these rules are referenced!

37 telling everyone their soul number and causing a diverse range of reactions makes SO much sense and becomes SO much funny when you replace "soul number" with "gender".

I haven't completed the entire chapter just yet however
Tumblr media
I feel like the way this is described has something to do with the Storm itself. I've never heard of this before obviously (i am not a philosopher lol i just like anime and gacha games) but the way Arcanists and Humans function is similar to the cave allegory in a weird way. We've already learned that not only is there a physical difference between arcanists and humans, but that there's also a mental barrier between the two and that they quite literally perceive the world differently.
Humans use logic to make sense of the world, where as Arcanists use "arcanum" to make sense of the world. And that Arcanum manifests in just all different types of ways. We've seen it before in past events. In the Mor Pankh event, Kaalaa quite literally imagines a monster coming to get her as she tries to do her work diligently, and can conjure up small stars above her head that are clearly only visible to her.
And this newest event is called The Prisoner in the Cave, which is a direct reference to this allegory. I think that the Humans are the "Prisoners" in this supposed scenario and the Arcanists are the people who have the tools and the fire that cast the shadows on the wall they see.
Humans are limited in what they can perceive of the Arcanist world, but Arcanists see everything of the Human world, there's nothing stopping them from knowing about the science and logic that humans use.
Tumblr media
This allegory actually has multiple parts and the second part sounds very much like how humans act and function. They cannot comprehend the Arcane world at all, and deny outright that its real even though they are faced with the knowledge of Arcanists being able to do things they can do.
There has always been a level of cognitive dissonance with the human characters in this game, because they know Arcanists are real and exist and that Arcanum is a thing that flows freely in their blood, but that they as humans will never be able to participate in or do. And because they can't do it, they will never really understand how it works, and because they can't reason their way into understanding Arcanum they just outright call it nonsense. Or ask for proof from Arcanists, when there's no proof that can really satisfy the human mind.
And I really think its this part that is really interesting when we think about Humans being the prisoner and the Arcanists being the "mastermind" behind the shadows
Tumblr media
because there's only one real source of undeniable Arcanum that affects humans openly in a way they can't deny: The Storm.
After reading about this allegory, it made me wonder if the Storm was also a way to prove something to humans as a whole, to show them firsthand the power of Arcanum in a way they would be able to understand. It sounds like something Arcana would do anyways, she doesn't have any problem transforming random people into Manus drones whenever she feels like it.
And we know that when people are caught in the storm, what do they do? They transform into the very things that were most influential during that time period. They literally poof and abstract away in painting styles and words and even technology etc. It's confusing to look at, but to experience it would be undeniable.

Currently thinking about 18/19 year old Toph getting thrown in some random podunk fire nation town’s one-cell jail and being like “hey I’m broke as hell but I’ve got a friend who can bail me out can I make a call” and then 2 hours later Fire Lord Zuko himself slams open the door yelling “WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO THIS TIME YOU SHIT”

These sections of the game always sort of confused me because sometimes the "Narrator" would be talking directly to Vertin, and other times he was talking to himself without ever actually mentioning her. But now that he's gone it's making me wonder just what his relation to Vertin is.
Tumblr media
Ever since Journey to Mor Panhk I've just been thinking about the whole "Arcanists can travel through the astral plane" thing and its making me wonder if these Narrators are an extension of that or if they are something separate entirely.
The first Narrator didn't really seem close to Vertin nor did he really attempt to get to know her because for some strange reason all of the Narrators seem to already be acquainted with her even though she has no memory of ever meeting them. It's making me think that maybe the Narrators are connected to Vertin's family history in some way, or they're connected to her ability to weather the Storm without abstracting away.
This Narrator seems way more friendly than the last, and unlike the last guy, she actually lets us know a few things about herself. We know she's an older woman, preferably elderly by the way she refers to herself as a grandma constantly.
Tumblr media
My current theory is that these people are Vertin's family. The game does put a lot of emphasis on the importance of Arcanist heritage, and Vertin's whole bloodline is shrouded in mystery. I have no doubt in my mind that her mother is the reason she's able to weather the Storm, and that this ability is probably something that is passed down. As far as Vertin is aware she has no father or uncle or "grandma", and the only thing she really knows about her mother is what The Foundation will tell her.
We also know that actual real ghosts and spirits can persist in this world if they're strong enough too, so I don't think it's that far out there to theorize them being spirits who are just in that Astral plane.
In Journey to Mor Pahnk Kaalaa and Kumar both revealed that this isn't exactly common knowledge amongst Arcanists either, and I read a post a while back about how there might be things that only certain kinds of Arcanists can see, and that what is hidden could extend to both humans and Arcanists. They also mentioned that both Arcanists and Humans can sometimes slip into this Astral plane on accident just by sleeping, because in order to get there you need a lot of focus.
Vertin might not be aware of this astral plane at all, and we do know that she is canonically not that great at Arcanum, but these moments with the Narrator are always happening at odd moments when she's not around the others, which makes me think they're happening when she's asleep.

i think it's really funny that regulus is the one writing back to them
[ID: digital fanart for reverse 1999. regulus is writing in a journal about her bad experience in apieron, looking angry. in a panel below, sotheby is reading the journal with an uneasy expression. druvis is passing by in the background, unaware and holding a tea cup. the artist's signature, @/jorgyjuice, is written below each panel. /end ID]
