Joseph Branciforte and Theo Bleckmann — LP2 (Greyfade)

Repeated motifs skew and recalibrate in soft focus with the deceptive simplicity of a folk song. Octaves are dismembered only to regroup, and tiny dynamic peaks stretch toward the infinities they imply. The vocal melody drifts languidly along atop a luminous wash of plucked bass, amoebic drone and something crossing oceanic tide and vinyl crackle thrown in for good measure. Yet, the luminous nocturn that is “11.15” comprises only one aspect of Joseph Branciforte and Theo Bleckmann’s LP2, a sequel and an advancing of the ideas explored on their first album several years back.

Much of that debut inhabited a dream space, a lush area of semi-somnolent exchange that it would be misleading, even incomplete, to call a dialogue. This new venture continues the journey but with a few large-scale formal elements included to shock the system. Amidst the drone and sonic wash, some stuttering aphorisms have been inserted, such as the fragmented “10.17.13.” Yes, the drones are still present, but they’ve been relegated to a background level, a higher register subservient to the bleeps, dull thuds and click-and-pop ur-glitch typifying the music’s fuzzy and bumpy trajectory. A technoid rhythm emerges, a spring-loaded fragment of fractured beat makes the music lope rather than engaging in the spring that should be its birthright. All fades in an immaculately lopsided reiteration, a deliberately misshapen figure eight.

 These teeny vignettes can chill or heat, depending on the mode of listening. They eschew the modal frameworks the duo so often establish in favor of punch, grind and antiseptic lather, like the increasingly layered “10.14.4.” A miniature engine drives it, a crystalline electronic motor somehow present but remote, Bleckmann’s voice almost courtly in its contrapuntal vowel repetitions. As surprising as the cross-section I, it offers nothing in preparation for the hard edges and jack-in-the-box mutations of “8.11.” That three-minute marvel may be the disc’s standout piece, so completely does it sum up all that makes the listening experience such an unpredictable treat. The miniatures complement and offset those vast tracts of space and sound in tandem familiar to anyone following these veterans’ work. Even here, there’s no shortage of timbral novelty. Are those strings on “7.21” or just a vocal manifestation? Throughout it all, Bleckmann’s voice (he is so obviously a master of overtone manipulation!) samples and holds any electronic concerns underpinning it. The music moves in concentric waves, rings of tone and mosaics of rhythm imbuing each moment with luminosity, masking a dizzying array of sounds below the frigid surfaces. If my descriptors are contradictory, so is the music, at once fiery and frozen in the alien climate it creates as, ultimately, time stands still.

Stranded on an island, wading through the debris, or erecting her own private fort out of the flotsam and jetsam left over from a series of floods, the Johnstown producer Tatiana Triplin pays skewed homage to the poverty and disintegrating history of her city, embracing the genres of footwork, breakcore, and Detroit techno while using the internet and her dreamlike imagination to fill in the gaps. On the twelve pieces which make up Flood City Trax the result is at once unique and redolent of a twenty-first century electronic curvature, from the glitchy warmth and slow-wound music box melodies of the Icelandic outfit Múm to the atmospheric onslaught of Vladislav Delay, from the dizzying percussion and hyperreal Chicago-adjacent fabrications of Jlin to the Afrohouse mutations, skeletal rhythms, and sticky tarraxinha tempos of the Congolese club sensualist Chrisman. David Hajdu and Theo Bleckmann pour one out in memory of Lou Reed, the prolific producer and Fusion mes Couilles founder Emma DJ strays towards naif melodies, and the duo of Ale Hop and Laura Robles dust off the colonial legacy of the cajón, plus tracks by Issei Herr, Merzbow, Crosslegged, Colin Stetson, Brandee Younger, and the MultiTraction Orchestra, a fluid lineup of experimental musicians led by the composer and producer Alex Roth.

Theo Bleckmann & Joseph Branciforte: LP1 (Greyfade)

This four-part collaboration between Grammy-nominated vocalist and composer Theo Bleckmann and electronic musician and sound engineer Joseph Branciforte is a compelling dive into the intersection of minimal electronics and vocalization. Bleckmann’s voice permeates the album, whether in the form of cut up breath work or falsetto lilts, but I find myself especially moved by the swaths of sound that blend voice and sound into one shimmering cloud (“3.4.26”). Its patient layers of gliding tones and semitones undulate like breath work, a sort of quiet tension hanging in the air. Another highlight is the final track, “5.5.9,” which takes its time evolving, revolving largely around a repeating, slow descent of chords and heavy on spacious reverb.

The mood of LP1 floats around the intersection of haunting and dreamy. It’s a strong showing, its hushed beauty fueled by the strong chemistry of its complementary makers. Highly recommended.

H2shO™️ Classical Influencer: Theo Bleckmann

Curating the upcoming playlists for H2shO™️ CLASSICAL, a mind/body aquatic workout, I asked GRAMMY® nominated jazz singer and new music composer Theo Bleckmann to share with me a short list of Classical Music composers who have influenced his art.

Bleckmann is presently in New York City rehearsing for the World Premiere of  Note To A Friend, a monodrama by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, directed by Yoshi Oishi (written for and starring Theo Bleckmann). It will premiere at the Japan Society NYC from January 12-15, 2023. Tickets are on sale now.

Theo took a moment out from his rehearsals to share his list of classical music composers. Like the artist himself, these men and one woman have pushed forward the boundaries of the genre. You don’t have to get into the water to enjoy this element of the shO.

Here are the first Four Composers with more to come over the following weeks. We begin with a pivotal figure in modernist music.

Igor Stravinsky 

Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor, later of French (from 1934) and American (from 1945) citizenship. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century.

Charles Ives  

Charles Edward Ives was an American modernist composer. His music was largely ignored during his early career, and many of his works went unperformed for many years. Later in life, the quality of his music was publicly recognized through the efforts of contemporaries like Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison, and he came to be regarded as an "American original" and as the leading American composer of art music of the 20th century.

Meredith Monk

Meredith Jane Monk  is an American composer, performer, director, vocalist, filmmaker, and choreographer. From the 1960s onwards, Monk has created multi-disciplinary works which combine music, theatre, and dance. In 2015, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama.

In this 1994 documentary, Monk shares her process and we see behind-the-scenes footage of her rehearsing and working with members of her acclaimed Vocal Ensemble on such works as "New York Requiem", "Do You Be", and "Vessel".

Jóhann Jóhannsson

Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson was a prolific Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist - one of the most acclaimed film composers of the last few decades - who wrote music for a variety of media.. His work is stylised by its blending of traditional orchestration with contemporary electronic elements.
