Tumblr media
"I'm not a child anymore, Azula."
He seethed at her words, although that reaction was probably exactly what she wanted. She had always been good at getting under his skin, at getting away with things she'd talked him into, making him take the blame.
The Agni Kai had been his own fault, he knows that very well, but she'd also revelled in it, something that is utterly unthinkable to him in regards to seeing your family humiliated and tortured like that. Even with the jealousy he feels for her, the golden child, he could not have stood by like that had their roles been reversed.
Then again, it's that impulsive nature, wanting to do right by the people around him, that had landed him in that situation anyway. He holds back against the urge to brush his fingers over the edge of the scar covering his face, there is no need to give her any more insight into what he's thinking beyond the emotion in his eyes, anyway.
Azula is powerful enough without him going around and giving her extra ammunition.
"You can play your games if you want, but you can't use me that easily anymore." He knows better than to let down his guard around her now, even if he might have been welcomed back now without having fulfilled the mission he'd been given upon his exile. Well, only the two of them know that, and it is a sword hung on a wire above his head, every single day.
He is here, home at last, surrounded by friends and loved ones. Family, if you want to call it that, for all that he cannot truly call Azula or the Firelord his family anymore. Despite its many flaws, being home is a blessing, and Azula controls how long the blessing lasts and what punishment will befall him once their little deception rears its head and burrows out from beneath the ground, displayed for all to see.
The Avatar isn't dead, he's sure of it.

Hi, I love your work and was wondering if you've done a post breaking down Earth Kingdom clothing inspiration and what the pieces are called. I'm writing a fanfiction and having a hard time finding info. Thanks!
The thing about the Earth Kingdom is that it's the most populated and diverse of the four nations in-universe. Meaning that each area of the Earth Kingdom has its own unique flavor. Some places are based off of specific Chinese dynasties, others around the various ethnic minorities of China, and some are other Asian cultures entirely.
Tumblr media
Ba Sing Se's aesthetic is based off of the later years of China's Qing Dynasty (1636-1912):

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Zuko's Teashop Outfit (tumblr.com)

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: The Dai Li (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Royal Earthbender Guards (tumblr.com)
Toph's family and background are meant to appear refined and wealthy so their look is based off of the later years of China's opulent Tang Dynasty (618-907):

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Toph’s Sleepwear (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Toph’s Hairstyle (tumblr.com)
Bumi likes to wear Chinese opera clothing and his character is broadly inspired by Lu Bu of the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280):
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Bumi (tumblr.com)
Kyoshi Island is Heian & Edo period Japan mixed with Ainu culture:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Headbands (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Makeup (tumblr.com)

The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Islanders Fashion Pt. 1 -... (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Kyoshi Islanders Fashion Pt. 2 -... (tumblr.com)
When Zuko and Iroh are on the run in the EK, they encounter a Vietnamese town and a Korean village:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Anatomy: “The Swamp” Episode (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Architecture: Song’s Village (tumblr.com)
The tribes of the Si Wong Desert are North African crossed with Mongolian:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Sandbenders (tumblr.com)
Chong and Lily (Secret Tunnel Hippies) wear Tibetan and Hmong clothing, respectively:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Chong (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Lily (tumblr.com)
The refugee family with the pregnant wife is inspired by Yi people:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 1 (tumblr.com)
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Serpent’s Pass Refugees Pt. 2 (tumblr.com)
And, with the exception of culturally isolated areas like Ba Sing Se/Si Wong Desert/Omashu/Kyoshi/Foggy Swamp, most men in the EK wear their hair in Taoist topknots:
The Cultures of Avatar: The Last Airbender | Cultural Fashion: Earth Kingdom Top Knots (tumblr.com)
So the sort of clothing your characters will be wearing in the EK depends on where in the country they are or are from. If you plan on inventing a new setting that takes place in the Earth Kingdom, try to choose a culture and period that reflects the mood or theme you're trying to get across.

ok i know the sex ed post was ages ago but I saw it in your most liked tab and it got me thinking, particularly with zukka, that even though they had sex ed they wouldn't have had gay sex ed. zuko grew up with sailors + the royal family in homophobic fire nation, and sokka got probably taught by gran gran about having babies. so all i can think is that if they decided to take that step when older, they are gonna have no clue what to do. queue sokka very very awkwardly shuffling up to bato who he knows is in a relationship with his dad and saying can I ask a question. promise not to laugh at me. except bato is less amused and more mildly horrified that sokka has chosen him to answer these questions
oh my god yeah. like, i'm not sure gran-gran's sex ed would've been heteronormative - depends on what you think the southern water tribe's attitudes are - but there's a very strong possibility that sokka, as a sexist teenage boy who thought he was straight, may have been like GRAN-GRAN EWWW STOP LALALA I'M NOT LISTENING
like the convo went: here's how babies happen -> sometimes grown-ups do this without the intent to make babies -> people can also do it with people of the same physical sex -> sokka running away screaming
he now regrets that.
for zuko, i think he might have. um. hands-on experience. y'know. on the ferry. with jet. does that prepare him for being in an actual relationship? probably not.
i'm not sure either of them would want to ask for guidance tbh. both of them canonically have experience with women (azula saying "mai seems to be in a good mood lately" had an undertone to it, sokka and suki in "the southern raiders") and zuko has some experience with men, so they'd probably just assume it's fine. figure it out as they go. it can't be that hard, right?
that said the image of sokka asking bato for advice on having gay sex is SO funny. bato knew he was signing up to be a dad when he started dating hakoda but he didn't think he'd have to give The Talk. also he has to be really careful about what examples he uses since his current gay sex partner is sokka's dad. (i imagine bato had some other relationships, but they all ended bc they realized he'd never value them above hakoda.) also sokka is asking specifically because he wants to have sex with the fire lord and like bato knew they were dating but he's never gonna get over how weird his life is now. "my stepson is asking me advice on gay sex so he can fuck the fire lord". truly wild.
meanwhile zuko has started spending time at piandao's bc he needs a father figure since iroh fucked off to ba sing se (plus piandao knows fire nation politics & can help him navigate being the fire lord) so he walks in one day and is like "yeah i have a question. not about politics but uhh. personal stuff" and piandao's like "oh what is it" and zuko tells him and piandao is like "i'm so honored you're asking me" and goes to his library and finds him a guide to gay sex that got banned in the fire nation but piandao managed to find a copy (he has a lot of illegal gay lit) and hands it to him like. go have fun kiddo. i'm rooting for you guys.
the other possibility is that suki (who is still dating sokka, they have an open relationship) finds out they want to have sex and knowing the state of their sex ed decides that they need a Lesson. it's a very good lesson because kyoshi island has very good queer positive sex ed but sokka has some interesting feelings about his girlfriend teaching him how to have sex with his boyfriend. not bad feelings. just interesting
ANYWAYS this is a fun topic and thank you for the mental image of sokka asking bato about gay sex

ATLA Gender Bender: "Aunt Ilah"
Originally, I had planned to closely base her Book 1 appearance on female general Qin Liangyu. However, there is one example of a female Fire Nation general shown in the comic "Suki Alone" (see: avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Biyu?fi…). As such, her Book 1 appearance combines features of depictions of Qin Liangyu with the appearance of this female Fire Nation general.
While in Ba Sing Se, Uncle Iroh wore his hair in a Qing Dynasty style queue. I gave "Aunt Ilah" a Qing Dynasty style braided bun to match, shown here with and without jewelry. This hairstyle was worn by Empress Xiaozhuangwen, born Bumbutai (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_…). Fitting of "Ilah", who would still be the rightful heir to the Fire Nation throne.
She is dressed in the same costume as the hostesses of the Jasmine Dragon, since I was too lazy to come up with a concept for an original outfit.
I've been picturing Michelle Yeoh as the voice of "Aunt Ilah".

I hope you had a good Pesach and are now having whatever chametz you like! Also... by any chance do you have thoughts about a situation in which Iroh, after returning from Ba Sing Se, didn't sit back and let Ozai take the throne? Would that have required Lu Ten to live, or Iroh to have finished the siege? How would that ripple through the White Lotus and the Fire Nation family? How different would things look once canon starts?
Aww man, thank you, and right back at you, but I always cringe a bit when people wish me happy holidays in asks like this, because when I fill them, and I put them in my queue, it just shows how far behind I am, and how long my queue is, lol.
I don't actually think that it would require Lu Ten to live or Iroh to have achieved a final victory over Ba Sing Se. I think all it really would have taken was for Iroh to mourn slightly differently, and for him to come roaring home with enough energy to rally his own supporters, and kick Ozai off the throne and put him in prison. What enables Ozai to take the throne is that Iroh doesn't fight him, that he is consumed by crippling grief, that turns into a years-long depressive episode.
Hell, I have AUs in which Iroh does take the throne after his father's death, and in most of them, what happens is that he has that kind of burst of energy, and then promptly sinks into a severe depression, and doesn't rule in spite of having the throne. The deciding factor here is not Iroh's political or military weakness, it's his psychological state, and his own choices, because he is a father who lost his only child, and he can't handle that.
As for how him taking the throne would ripple outwards, one of the things that allows him to come to grips with the harm he has done to the world and the harm his family has done to the world, and how his son is dead because of this ideology, and what needs to happen for the world to heal, is that he was effectively left alone in his grief to come to his own conclusions, where his actions had very few consequences, and he could hide away. If he takes the throne, that is not going to happen. Even if he hides himself away, if he has a throne, that is an action with a consequence.

Misako is at the desert oasis looking for Wang Shi Tong's Library in hopes of it maybe having something about who/where the avatar is, when she begins hearing about The Avatar traveling around the Earth Kingdom. At the same time, she comes across a wanted poster of Wu. She always knew Wu didn't support his brother; her husband, so him being wanted for treason wasn't wholly surprising. The poster doesn't say what he did exactly. Just that he is wanted dead or alive. She overheard two men discussing an encounter they had with the avatar a few weeks ago in Jamanakai Village, on the western coast of the earth kingdom. The avatar is young. That sounds right. He's also traveling with an old man, and one other teenager. That's certainly interesting. Misako asks the men if they know where the group was heading. They think North, but not much else about it. They say the avatar so far only knows firebending, or at least only used firebending during that skirmish. After 14 years, Misako finally has a solid lead and immediately sets out to find the child.
Queue Misako not having a single fucking clue that the people she's tracking are literally her son and brother-in-law. She seems to always be just one step behind them. Right up until she runs into Wu at a tea shop in Ba Sing Se (well after they've added Cole, Zane, Kai, and Nya to the group.)
Misako: I know the avatar is in the city! I just need to figure out where exactly: I've narrowed it down to the upper ring. I'm working on getting an invitation to the party the Earth King is throwing because I just know the avatar will be there. The party is in HIS honor! I just need my Guy to respond to me; the guy who makes my fake ID's that is. If I can just get into that party I know I'll be able to meet the kid. I can't exactly go around telling everyone I'm the Fire Lady but if I can just-
Wu: uhm-
Misako: oh I probably sound insane right now. Well. I saw those wanted poster's Wu. What brings you to Ba Sing Se's upper ring of all places? Not exactly the most inconspicuous location..
Wu: uhm. Well the thing is-

Cultural Fashion: Ba Sing Se Queues
Tumblr media
While most of the Earth Kingdom’s men sport Taoist topknots, most men in Ba Sing Se sport long braids known as queues. This is due to Ba Sing Se being largely inspired by the final days of China’s Qing Dynasty (1636-1912).
The queue was a hairstyle originally worn by the Jurchen and Manchu peoples of Manchuria and was later required to be worn by all males living under Manchu rule (China’s Qing Dynasty). Hair on top of the scalp was grown long and braided, while the front portion of the head was shaved.
I really like the decision to give Ba Sing Se its own distinct fashion, especially in terms of hairstyles. It really emphasizes how isolated the capital is from the rest of the nation.
