"no hints were dropped" ok not to be that person but here are the hints that were dropped regarding Colin and Trent being gay:
1. Colin mentioning Grindr in a joke
2. Trent touching the arm of a man in the background
Here is one of the hints that Keeley was bi (even though I do believe she's been canonically bi since season 1, but not everyone sees it this way)
1. Her desktop background was in the colors of the bisexual flag
Here were some of the hints that Ted was bi:
1. Bisexual flag colored triangles above his head in the hallucination sequence
2. Inverted pink triangle next to him in that same sequence (and you can't tell me the creators didn't know, when the Homomonument is based on that symbol)
3. Countless (countless!!!) comments about men's physiques ("huge muscular thighs all caked in mud", whistling at a picture of Pep, "look at that head of hair", "he's strong", "he looks like a Rodin sculpture in cleats", etc.)
4. About a man (Higgins) and a woman (Rebecca), he had to say: "that's a crowd I don't mind being smack-dab in the middle of"
5. Him checking Trent out in the pub in 2x07 (his eyes are up there, Ted!)
6. "It could go either way", "I contain multitudes" and other comments in this vein
7. Bi lighting as he entered the Yankee Doodle Burger Barn
8. Giving similar looks to the female waitress and the male waiters in that restaurant (including a waiter in a cowboy costume that looked like he belonged in a gay club, who tipped his hat at Ted when greeting him)

"That's cause you were put into a box", "That box ceases to exist today", the box in the hallucination sequence breaking into triangles (as in the bi triangles and the inverted pink triangke), "we've been playing too rigid", "our guys need freedom", "fast, fluid, free, with full support", the "box that one needs to break out of" being a prominent motif in season 3
10. Wishing Beard called him pet names ("Honey, is that an ingredient or something you just called me?")

And so much other stuff that, had Ted not self-identified as straight (*cough* put himself into a box *cough cough*) , you could make the case that he was canonically bi.
Here are some of hints that there was a romantic connection between Ted and Trent:
1. They hit a lot of romantic beats, and not in the jokey self-aware way in which Roy and Ted hit them in "Rainbow", but in an organic and sincere way
2. They both checked each other out: Trent checked Ted out when Ted was changing in front of him, Ted checked Trent out when Trent came up to him in a pub and hit him with a pick-up line while his date that looked a lot like Ted waited for him outside
3. Did I mention that Trent was on a date with a moustachioed man who dressed in a similar style to Ted? Let's mention it again
4. In that very bar, during a 50 second long conversation, Trent managed to say the word "love" three times. I searched the word "love" in the transcripts of the episodes. There's no other instance in which its frequency is this high
5. "Love our chats" incomplete rule of threes
6. "Sport, it's quite the metaphor" (implied: a metaphor for love; see also "love's a beautiful game" from the song Ed Sheeran wrote for Ted Lasso), "Also makes for a heck of a nickname", "Good night, Ted", "Good night, sport"
7. The soft, romantic, melancholic song playing in the background of this scene, while Ted and Trent are the last ones left in the office, with lyrics such as "When your words begin to crumble like the sidewalks all around this crummy neighborhood / From the chalky cliffs of Dover / I'd come over, I'd start over if I could"
8. Trent wearing sunflower colors in the episode "Sunflowers" and in the finale; sunflowers symbolize Ted's home (it's not subtle). He's the only character dressed like that. I'm still looking for any other explanation other than "Trent is Ted's home"
9. Their constant flirting and the way they look at each other with incredible fondness
10. The entire episode "The Strings That Bind Us". It's structured around Ted and Trent's relationship, and the way Trent changed because of Ted (in season 2, Ted defined a soulmate as someone who changes your life forever). The red string metaphor. Ted points out that soulmates are connected by a string tied to their little fingers. Ted and Trent both extend their little fingers out in similar shots. They are connected by a huge block of red in their last scene of the episode. Ted makes several comments about other men that apply to Trent ("Look at that head of hair", "Frames his face nicely", "My favorite one, he was clean shaven"). Many more details that lead back to Ted and Trent: Nate tells the restaurant owner to tell Jade he said "Hello". Immediately after, Ted and Trent say "Hello" to each other. The map that Nate's father used to ask out his mom has the number 1.3 written on it and an illustration of two people at a table in a restaurant. Ted and Trent went to a restaurant together in season 1, episode 3. The last scene of the episode mimics a "Race for Love" scene from a romcom, with Trent chasing after Ted. Trent also does not say a word to anyone other than Ted in the entire episode. He is completely focused on Ted
11. "Trent, what do you love? Is it writing?" and Trent ends up writing a book about Ted and naming the manuscript after Ted and he only cares about Ted's opinion on it (he leaves the room when Beard starts reading, but stays in the office after hours just to watch Ted read. "I just wanted you to like it.")
11. Trent's crush on Ted, confirmed by Jimmy Lance (and also obvious in the show, if you ask me)
Now, why would I believe that none of these hints were intentional? Maybe some could be explained away, but all of them? The hints we got for Colin, Trent and Keeley were so much smaller than this, and those turned out to be intentional.

I was in quite the headspace when I was writing this and you can tell. In contrast to most other things I've published, I edited this painstakingly. Somewhere in the middle I watched Casablanca again and you can actually tell where.

Her focus came in and out of the moment, mostly being drawn back by the occasional whimper or hiss that echoed loud against the cement walls.
It was a mistake coming here tonight. she knew it the moment Hyuck bought it up.
"You look lethal." Yuta crossed his arms the moment she walked into his house, equally confused and somehow proud. Beside him, Hyuck whistled. Both of them eyed her top to bottom, taking in the very nice dress she bought herself this week.
“Absolutely deadly.” Hyuck agreed, crossing his arms in front of him, “So where are we going?” He looked between the both of them.
“For dinner. A bar maybe, judging by how our friend is dressed.” Yuta mused, turning to (Y/N) for confirmation of the plan she laid out.
“What’s wrong with how I’m dressed?” She frowned. 
“What?” Hyuck looked between both of them, confused, “We aren’t going to your club?”
Yuta chuckled, “No (Y/N) is staying away from the hallowed grounds.”
“Why?” Hyuck turned to her, looking offended. “I shaved my balls for this.”
Both Yuta and her turned to the boy, incredibly confused and horrified by the information he willingly volunteered
She cleared her throat, deciding it best to ignore it outright, “That’s none of your business, Lee Donghyuck.” She crossed her arms over her chest.
“I just told you I shaved my genitals and you’re bringing up personal businesses?”
“You volunteered that information.” She grimaced, wondering why she didn’t see this coming. “You can’t just go to there on a whim. There’s a list that’s fixed a week in advance.”
“Aren’t you literally friends with the owner?” Hyuck mirrored her arms.
“The owner's friends gets benefits." Yuta shrugged, "You're roped in by extension, it seems.”
The very mention of the person who was not to be named made her spine straighten, “We are not going to the club. I don’t want him to think I am in his space, I don’t want him to think I need to. It’s a horribly petty thing to do.”
“He might not be there at all.” Yuta offered.
“We are not going.” She repeated herself, looking at the both of them with a sense of finality.
They ended up at the club less than two hours later. After dinner, entering a “normal” club reminded her exactly why she stopped doing this after undergrad. She wanted to just go home but Hyuck and Yuta were both slick menaces. And now she was here.
One of the men in front of her cursed, bringing her attention back to the present. 
Her original reasoning to slip into the basement the moment she entered the club was to mitigate even the most remote possibility of being confronted by Johnny. Another part of her was overcome with intrigue once the idea materialised.
The basement was one place she hadn’t had a chance to explore. Initially, Johnny would tease her with the idea of it, but he never lived up to his own promise in that department. A couple of months in, their visits to the club reduced considerably as work got harder and their apartments got more comfortable. Then the matter was never brought up again.
Sitting in it now, she tried to imagine what Yuta meant when he compared it to the few dungeons he frequented in Amsterdam. A few with Ten even— back when he was still single of course.
The place was a lot more elegant than the floors above, divided into confined rooms that felt larger than they were owing to the incredibly tall ceilings. Unlike the rooms on the second floor though, there was no pretence. Instead of looking like hotel rooms, each room was mostly minimal. Despite the baroque display of velvets and satins, each only had one tall bench and a few chairs. The lighting was also much brighter than the intimate dimmed ones above. The lights here were yellow and brazen, nothing hid under them. The most apparent of which were the contraptions and tools displayed audaciously on the walls, ranging from curious to downright frightening. 
Despite all that attention, the rooms were also open: no door, not even a curtain to lend privacy to the inhabitants. If she was clueless about what the requirements on this floor were, taking a walk down the length of the corridor gave her the clarity she needed. 
Pain of this magnitude wasn’t something she was ready to give or receive from a stranger. But she did gather that spectatorship was a part of the experience on this floor. The chairs in most rooms had at least one person seated, watching as other people made use of the various instruments available.
That is how she ended up here.
One of the rooms seemed to be void of any onlookers. Two men occupied the bench inside, looking at each other with tender trust. She stopped at the entrance, deciding that this was the palatable option. She might even learn a thing or two, she wagered.
At first, they seemed unaffected by her presence. She pulled a chair and sat down at a considerable distance, still feeling trepidation about the intrusion. She watched as they got comfortable with each other, imagining that they met here for the first time today. They decided to trust each other despite, was what she decided. 
Sometimes she wished that was how her initial visit to the club went.
“What should we use?” One of the men asked the other, the yellow sleeves of his shirt brushing over the man's cheek. The other looked to be the one calling the shots, so she was waiting to know as well. But he surprised her, turning to look at (Y/N) instead.
Her eyes went wide for a moment, not sure why she was being acknowledged.
“Well? You’re wearing silver aren’t you?” The man asked, his hooded eyes impatient.
Oh.
Her hand went to touch the chain that Yuta had so creatively woven into her hairpin. It was supposed to be half a joke. 
Owing to the spontaneous visit, they were unaware that there was a theme tonight. It was classic movies night and none of the three were dressed for the occasion. So they decided to keep the spirit, deciding on pursuing otherwise uncustomary situations. Hyuck said he'd do anything the first person he met told him. Yuta claimed that today would be the day he pursued his favourite bartender. And she put on the silver chain and walked into the basement. A decision taken for the interesting stories it would birth. Much like this one, she relented.
She chewed on her bottom lip, trying to think of what she could possibly say.
“I don’t think–” Yellow shirt began to speak, probably sensing her panic.
“Did I ask you?” The other was quick to interject, keeping his eyes on her.
She looked at the two men carefully, the more compliant one much taller than the one clearly in charge.
“Take your shirts off.” She said first, “You’ve been rubbing against each other like kids at church. It’s pathetic.” Hooded eyes smirked, pleased to get what he was looking for.
“You heard her little boy.” He turned back to his partner, reaching out.
“You’re own clothes. Not each other’s.” She clicked her tongue, expressing her disapproval through her tone.
And that was how it began. They were excellent at following her instructions and slowly she began to take more liberties.
People came and went behind them. The first hint of another presence had surprised her. After that she started ignoring the sound of occasional shuffling. 
Except one that spoke with a voice she could not ignore. A familiar one.

Johnny was comfortable in his corner, pretending to listen to Ten explain the theme again.
“I was watching this movie with a friend while she was recovering from a broken leg. And it came to me!” He told yet another person, “Unfortunately, she isn’t here today.”
“What are you talking about?” One of Ten’s friends sat up at that, “I saw (Y/N) an hour ago.” She looked at Johnny for confirmation.
Johnny looked up, at least two pairs of eyes already on him. He shrugged, trying to play off his nonchalance by taking another sip of his drink.
“Babe,” The woman continued, poking the man beside her. “You remember seeing (Y/N) downstairs, right?”
Johnny snorted, “You must be confusing her with someone else.” He said with utter confidence. She would not be anywhere near him if she had the choice. Not after what he said.
“She’s in a white dress today, right?” He asked his partner, who nodded.
“Yeah, she’s downstairs. Martin told me when I went for a cocktail. I wasn't looking or anything.” He added quickly. “Don’t glare at me man.”
Johnny looked away, not realising he was. His mumbled apology wasn’t even trying to be genuine.
“There’s Yuta,” Ten raised his arm to call the man. “Let’s ask him.”
“There is no need.” Johnny groaned, but Ten ignored him with ease.
“What?” Yuta came up, looking thoroughly annoyed. No doubt being interrupted in the middle of something.
“Is (Y/N) here with you?” Ten asked.
Instead of answering, Yuta turned to Johnny. The cautious look he gave him gave him the answer he was looking for.
“Yeah.” He turned back to Ten.
“Where is she? It’s her theme tonight!” Like most other people, Yuta too did not care about Ten’s theme.
“You would not guess.” He said with a grin, sitting down with a conspiratorial chuckle.
And that's how Johnny ended up in the basement for the first time in a year. He walked past each room, looking in to find what he was looking for.
Johnny wasn’t sure what he’d even do when he found it. Would he stop her? Would he watch? Or would he leave her alone like he had himself wanted?
Johnny slowed his steps, only for a moment. Why did she have to come to the basement now? If she wanted to, why didn't she mention it to him? He thought she wouldn't like it. Or maybe he wasn't the one she wanted to share that with. That last thought was alone to add a spring to his step.
His thoughts only spurred him on as he passed more rooms without her in it. Almost crossing one, he stopped to take a few steps back. He had to be sure that the back that was facing him was the one he was seeking.
She was in white like Ten's friend had stated, a dress he never had the privilege of seeing before tonight. Head rested on her hand, she was watching someone else. He relaxed, walking further into the room. Once her side came into view, the relief that came over him seemed to piss him off. Any thought of leaving her alone evaporated with it. This was supposed to be what he wanted.
“I had to see it for myself.” He scoffed, the novelty of the situation only just coming to him. (Y/N) turned in her chair, looking up at him with surprise in her eyes. “Trying new things? You could have told me if you wanted to come down here. At least I know what your limits are. You were never the best communicator.”
“I would assume that I know my own limits best.” She turned away from him, back to the two men in front of her. Not a hint of kindness in her eyes.
He really must have said too much that night. 
One of the men sat quietly on the large wooden bench every room had, yellow shirt hanging over his shoulders, in place because his hands were cuffed behind him. The other man stood over him, a flog in his hands. His white pants matched her dress.
“Has he stopped asking for more?” She questioned the one standing. Both the men were watching her, waiting.
“Then why did you stop?” She questioned, voice impatient. “Does the little boy want something stronger?” Yellow shirt nodded like he was waiting for the question.
(Y/N) chuckled, getting up to walk to the small chest of cupboards. She leaned over, making Johnny finally notice the length of her dress— high above her knee. Pure instinct made him turn to the other people in the room, watching her with undoubtedly the same thought on their minds.
“Someone isn’t on theme.” Johnny clicked his tongue. It made the guys turn to look at him, then between the two of them.
Suddenly Johnny felt like they were the spectators, and he was the one on display with her.
“I didn’t plan on coming here tonight, so I didn’t receive the memo.” She didn’t even look at him, standing up with a thick whip in her hand.
“Eyes on me boys.” She turned to the boys, “Do you want this?” She questioned and the one meant to be on the receiving end nodded eagerly. 
She chuckled, walking over to them and handing the tool over. 
“Such an obedient boy, aren’t you?” She cooed, hand on his chin. Yellow shirt nodded enthusiastically. Giving in to her so easily that it nauseated Johnny. That would get them nowhere.
Keeping her eyes on his face and her fingers stroking his cheek, she handed the whip to the other guy.
“Start slow. You’re being too hostile.” She turned to the man with a warning.
“He likes it.” He defended, her hooded gaze remained bemused.
“I’m the one who’s calling the shots, am I not?” She raised a brow. The man swallowed, giving her a quick nod. As complaint as his companion.
This was no fun.
Johnny scoffed rather loudly, but she ignored him and as a consequence, the boys ignored him as well.
“What will you tell me you'd do?” She continued, focused on the man.
“I will listen and follow instructions.”
“Like a what?”
“Like the slut I like to pretend I’m not.” 
She smiled, letting the one in yellow go to run a hand through this one’s hair. He closed his hooded eyes to enjoy the feeling.
“Good. Now do what you’re told.” He nodded and she let go, turning around to walk back to where she was.
Her eyes met Johnny’s finally.
“Can I help you?” She asked him, the tyrannical tone bleeding into the question. Johnny’s cock twitched for the first time that evening.
“You can start by reminding yourself who you’re speaking to, pet. Or do you need assistance?” Johnny tongued his cheek, shoving his restless fingers into his pocket.
She looked at him with disbelief for a moment. When she rolled her eyes, he was sure she was taunting him.
“You can keep your reminders to yourself.” She rubbed her hands together, “I didn’t come here to play with you.”
“Why are you here at all?” Johnny raised a brow, unable to hide the vexation in his voice. Why didn't she tell him she wanted to come to the basement?
It earned him the first flash of anger in her, so far, apathetic gaze. “I didn’t realise you were marking territory? Am I barred from coming here now?”
“I was asking a question.” He took in a cautious breath, realising that she thought he meant the club. Perhaps, the alternative made him look less bothered. 
“Can't you see?” she pointed at the two boys, “I'm simply minding my own business. Why have you come down here? Looking for me?” She leaned against the head of the chair she was seated in before, waiting for his response.
Johnny let out a humourless laugh, “Who said I was looking for you?”
“I haven’t known you to come to the basement before.” She pointed.
“Just because I haven’t come here with you, doesn’t mean I’m a stranger to the place."
The words did what they were intended to do, her anger flared with an inhale she tried to play off. Johnny had to bite down his smile.
“Okay, be on your way then.” She flicked her hand towards the exit, dismissing him. "There are other rooms."
Johnny took a step towards her instead, “I stopped at this one because I could not believe you could be a watcher. I wanted to see for myself."
“She told you to leave man, why are you ruining our night?” The boy in yellow whined, making Jaehyun turn to find both men watching the exchange. The other one kept his eyes on Johnny.
She turned to meet his gaze, “Did I say you can speak?” She questioned. The boy gulped, shaking his head. “If you’re that impatient then get on with it. I didn’t say you can stop.” He nodded, turning back to the man in white pants with a demand, his eyes still watching Johnny. He looked familiar.
Johnny whistled and hissed, bringing her attention back to him. “Look at you. Even I almost believe that look on your face. What’s wrong, baby? You sound mad.” He cooed, mocking her.
“What’s wrong is that you’ve sauntered in here to ruin my night.” She failed to hide her frown.
"Ruin?" Johnny's voice raised in taunt. "I'm sorry to disturb your little pageant. You must have been enjoying just how easy this was before I walked in. They're eating up your every word, you must be elated."
Her jaw flexed and Johnny had to resist the urge to close the gaping distance between them.
"If you're done with your tantrum. You can leave now." She aimed her gaze at the door, a single and final order. It was Johnny's turn to flex his jaw. Tantrum.
"If you think this is a tantrum then what should we call your fucking fits?" He clamped his jaw the moment he heard the edge in his voice.
"We don't have to call them anything." Her volume rose, taking a step forward, daring him to continue.
"There it is." He smiled victoriously, "Why don't you stomp your foot while you're at it. Let's show everybody what you're really like under this act."
He could see the way she got blinded by her rage. For him he realised, that was something only he was capable of pulling out of her.
He should have backed off but Johnny stayed pinned in place, momentarily consumed by his sick desires to always get a rise out of her. He knew she wanted it too, her breathing hitched but eyes stayed glued on him. It was deranged but this is what he has signed up for with her.
“Fine," She said after a well contemplated silence. Johnny's lips quirked, knowing he was right as usual. Finally she was going to give in to him. For once. "Take off your chain and I’ll give you what you want.”
His smile faltered, brows furrowing. He regained himself quickly, reminding himself that he was being foolish to believe it would be that easy. Not after he was the one who told her they'd be taking a break. Not after the unnecessary things he'd said.
It was a silly thing that he regretted the moment he proposed it. But the tone she had ignored him for no reason still made his blood boil. At least he had the decency to lay down his intentions in front of her. She had absolutely no right to be angry. And yet, she was furious at him. It was evident in how she refused to so much as look at him since he had made the proposition, acting like he wasn't even there. Refusing to share an elevator, refusing to bring papers to his office.
He wanted to be civil but she went to great lengths to stay out of his path. Even reminding him that he wanted this when he asked her why she was sending interns with tasks that were done easier without the middleman.
It was infuriating and it only offended Johnny further. Even now, he was the one to come here with his pride between his legs. He told himself that he would not give in till she relented first. 
“And what is it that I want, Kitten?”
“What you always want.” She turned to walk back to her chair, pulling the object closer to him, letting it grate against the cement floor harshly. “Me.”
Johnny's teeth against each other. Taking his hands out of his pocket, he folded his arms. No, it was her turn to give in.
“I will give you what you want if you take that chain off.” He pointed at her head.
“What I want is for you to leave. If you can’t do that, I will have to abandon my new friends.” She pointed behind her.
They reached a stalemate with her words, silently sizing each other up. In the back, the boys had forgotten about the commotion all together. The sound of clicking locks signalled the introduction of the bondage frame. The next sound was the clean crack of a whip, followed by a harsh inhale once it touched skin. Johnny took in a sharp inhale himself, the sounds tempting him.
“What good will taking mine off do?” Johnny spoke through raspy breathing, “You give up too soon anyway. You don’t know how to be in charge.” Another slash echoed against the walls, this time Johnny exhaled slow. “You only know how to be a brat.”
Despite his words, she smiled, watching him shift on his feet. “Two weeks without being inside me and you’re already forgetting things.”
“Has it been that long already? I didn’t even notice.”
“Sure. The last time you went this long, you were throwing tantrums like this.”
It was Johnny’s time to be racked with anger, his exhale slow, dangerous.
The whips increased in frequency and moans filled the large roam, bouncing across the walls with urgency.
“Go slow.” She lashed, turning her attention back to the couple.
“Sorry." Both of them said together, the one whipping dropped his arm. The other opened his glazed eyes.
Johnny should have brought (Y/N) to the basement himself.
“Sorry what?”
“Sorry, miss.” They said in tandem.
Johnny scoffed, “I never realised what a good teacher I was.”
“What do you fucking want?” She turned back to him, lips twisted with irritation. “You wanted a break, didn't you? What was it that you said?” She finally sat down, leaning back and crossing her legs. “That’s right. “You wanted a change. What happened, are you bored already?"
"No," Johnny shrugged, unclasping his arms from his chest to walk towards her. "I just wanted to see what you were doing with your free time. It's such a pity to see you waste it. The only person bored here is you apparently." This time he did smile, enjoying the way she averted her gaze, "So I came to offer you a game just for tonight."
"Not interested. You need to come up with better excuses."
Johnny hummed like he didn't believe her, shadow falling over his entire form as he came closer. Her brows knit, gearing up to defend the truth. He cut her off before she could even speak.
"Stand up." He ordered, stopping his stride only when his knee touched the chair.
She blinked, practically rendered silent by his audacity. What pissed her off more was how she almost did it, the chair audibly screeching back before she could reign her instincts in.
(Y/N) crossed her arms, mirroring his stance from earlier as she sat back to play off the slip, pretending she was just trying to sit back.
She knew it didn't work when Johnny smirked. She was busy preparing herself for when he asked again, to stand her ground with more conviction. Instead, he leaned down, kneeling in front of her. The act was in sharp contrast to his previous words, giving her whiplash and leaving her out of depth.
His fingers brushed her dress, staring at her lap in a way that made her think he would rest his head against it. It was a thought that had no place in the given circumstances. Slowly he looked up with a tender gaze that was equally out of place.
"What game do you have in mind?" She asked, mostly to distract herself from the way her heart leapt when she met his eyes. After all this time, he still had the ability to make her feel so excruciatingly timid.
"It's movie night." His voice was soft, "Let's pretend to be different people." He ran his tongue over his cheek.
She wasn't sure what to make of the statement. After all this time he never stopped being an enigma.
"Who are you dressed as?" She looked down at his white shirt, making a note of the undone bowtie, "Roger Moore as James Bond?"
"I prefer Sean Connery."
She took the bowtie between her fingers, "You don't have his raw sexual magnetism."
Johnny's lips twitched and she couldn't help the way her own mirrored it.
"If we're going to be playing parts," She sighed, not entirely sure how he'd managed to lure her in. Then again, she was always too ready to give in to him, "Let's play ones different from who we really are. Something to keep this night out of our," She failed to hide the sliver of indignation in her deep inhale, "Current situation."
Johnny licked his lips, looking somewhere between amused and rattled. Yet again, she was stunned by his audacity.
"In that case, I have the perfect thing." He took her hand in hers, bringing it up to kiss her palm. This time her indignated inhale came before a pained exhale.
He came closer instead of finishing his thought, leaning till their noses touched. 
"Let's pretend we're in love."
Her eyes froze over in an instant, a foreign gasp making her turn back to the people who were now spectators to her vulnerability. Both of them watched with bated breaths, their own preoccupations long forgotten. They watched her, waiting for her response.
She pushed Johnny without looking at him. Predictably, he did not budge. When it happened the third time she did turn back, liquid rage dripping from her glare. Her mind mulled over a response multiple times, the sort of words that would express her outrage without hinting at her agony. It fell short, not finding the right ones to express how deeply unkind his words were. Not without betraying her closely guarded secret.
He was still close to her, close enough to let her count the lashes that framed his amber eyes, to see the stray one that fell on his cheek. This close it was easy to see that he was the most beautiful man on earth, easy to forget everything and just fall an inch closer. It was easy to want nothing more than to press her lips against his, to forget they were meant to be apart. This close she didn't need to pretend to be in love.
"Oh god." She heard Yuta's voice, cutting through the haze of lust that began to overcast her decisions. "(Y/N)." He marched up to them.
Only when she heard his footsteps stop beside did she turn from Johnny.
"Let's go, babe." He pointed his thumb at the door, whistling to play off the urgency.
She turned back to Johnny, who had moved back a few inches now. Miles, as far as their usual proximity was concerned.
She sighed, pushing her chair back.
"What do you need (Y/N) for?" Johnny asked casually.
"I need to keep her away from you." Yuta clicked his tongue, laughing awkwardly when Johnny turned to frown at him. "Nothing personal, buddy. She made me promise I would." He pointed at her.
Johnny turned to her, raising a brow. Waiting for confirmation.
"Don't bother. My instructions are to take her away whether she likes it or not. You know how crazy our (Y/N) is." Yuta chuckled like he was making small talk. She got out of her chair with a loud screech.
"Let's go." She grabbed Yuta's arm to turn him around, "I need a fat drink."
"You need a fat something." He scoffed, knowing himself that he deserved the smack she landed on his arm
"At least try to think before you speak sometimes." She groaned.
"Just tell her man." One of the boys spoke up, reminding Johnny of their presence. It was the one in yellow, his brows furrowed in deep thought. His companion scoffed, shaking his head.
"Did anybody say you can stop whipping?" Johnny raised a brow at the guy with the object in his hand. "Did you tell him to stop?" He asked the one tied up. Both shook their heads.
"In that case, you need to focus on your own endeavours." Johnny stood up from the floor, brushing the dirt of the knees of his good pants. "Enjoy your night."
As he turned to walk away, the sound of a whip cracked through the silence.

(Y/N) seemed to find more than a few merits in the basement. On top of being less crowded, the basement bar also housed some interesting liquor choices. A tequila bottle with a worm and some Baiju with an entire snake sat side by side on the shelf at eye level. While she would not be trying them, she could respect Ten's sense of humour.
Yuta also swore that this was the bar with the best cocktails. Martin, the bartender, was a legend on the premises if her best friend's claims were true. Patrons would sometimes grace the floor to only stop for a drink. She was sufficiently intrigued.
Nails tapped against the stone surface of the bar as they waited for the cocktails in question. She also waited for Yuta to speak, getting impatient and agitated from his stare.
"I just don't understand why you keep doing this." He huffed. Never one to express any overt opinion on the matter, she was caught off guard by his frustration. "If you really want to stay out of his way then do it."
"I'm trying. He came to me."
“You and I both know that you can enforce a boundary when you want to.” He groaned, looking away like the whole thing was making him uncomfortable. “Look, I don’t want to sit here and act like I can give you any real advice. I just want to ask you if you’re sure about what you’re doing.”
She could never lie to Yuta, not in a convincing way at least. She stopped tapping her nails, rubbing her fingers together and watching the bright lights above reflect on her nails.
“I know what I'm supposed to be doing. What it’s supposed to be like.” She mumbled the confession, spotting a chip in her nail enamel. “But it’s confusing with him. Everything is confusing with him.” Teeth ground against teeth as she let the words wash over her. She needed a manicure. She needed to stop doing this to herself.
"This has started to feel self-inflicted to me." Yuta assessed with accuracy.
"It needs to end." She spoke, the words rattling her to the core.
It was the only way left now.
"Then do it? What exactly are you waiting for?" Yuta raised a brow, making it blatant that he was baiting her.
Her lips parted, answer ready on her lips. She bit her tongue the next moment, putting the thought away.
"How do you just expect him to notice that you're this in love with him when you put so much effort into hiding it?"
She looked up at him fast, "I’m not–"
"Spare me, (Y/N)." He cut her off, "The only person who can't tell is the man himself. And that’s only because he’s too busy being in love with you.”
“Stop.” She shook her head, “That just isn’t true.”
“Are you stupid?”
“Fuck off, Yuta. You don’t know all of it. You’ve seen him be nice, you’ve seen him take me to the orthopaedic’s, seen him get me drinks. But you don’t know how he is. If Johnny loved me, he would say it.”
“Like you say it?” His brows furrowed, looking angry. She had never seen Yuta angry at her.
“It’s not the same.” She took a deep breath, her lungs fracturing from the force. A sound of wood cracking filled the air, followed by the laughs of multiple people. She turned back to see the cause of the commotion. Someone shouted that a bench broke, followed by a reassurance that everybody was fine.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Yuta spoke after, “You keep torturing the guy because you don't know what to do about how you feel. And you torture yourself because you don't want to make a decision." Yuta paused, giving a sympathetic sigh. "I love you, but it's not fair, you know that. He drops everything for you, I can’t believe you don’t see how he lets you toy with him. He’s always at the mercy of your whims and he doesn’t even mind it. Do you want to be the kind of person who does that to someone? He’s a decent guy."
She knew he was right. But he also didn't know all of it. 
"I don't want to torture him." She admitted, keeping her eyes fixed on the white bar top, “He's always trying to get a rise out of me and I just,” She paused to sigh, yet again feeling confronted by her own state. These were things she’d never said before. “So I give him what he wants, a fair fight. I don't know how this ended up being the kind of thing where we keep pushing to see how far it can go.”
Yuta frowned, visibly bothered by the notion. She couldn't blame him. It seemed to be like this all the time now. Both of them looked for reasons to fight lately, like they were testing to see who would get up and call it off first. Loving him made her angry and picking fights made it easier to pin that anger on the right target. He had begun to find her frustrating as a result.
"Why not just talk it out? It can't be worse than it is now?" Yuta questioned.
About this, he would be wrong. She knew Johnny too well by now. He would try to play it off, say that they can give it a shot without meaning it. Johnny was used to being admired, he would never understand its intensity. He would take it as easy as he took most things and it would ruin her.
"I think," She paused, looking up at the ceiling with a groan. "I'm not afraid of rejection. If he said no it would hurt, but I'd move on." She looked back down at her friend with a heavier heart. "What I'm afraid of is that he would say yes without meaning it. He's okay with everything. If I asked him for a relationship he'd say okay, if I ask him I never want to see him again he'd say okay too. If I asked him for the real thing I'd want it to work. But I don't know what he wants." 
She sighed, thinking about how complacent he was about everything. When she decided to ignore him on a whim he left it alone, when she decided to spend the last week of her recovery at Yuta's he was okay with it. He was okay with her sleeping with Doyoung and when she told him they don't anymore he was okay with that too.
"Johnny is just always okay with everything." She spat the words, before she sighed again. "I know that's not fair I just–" She paused again, entirely lost on what she even wanted. "If he loves me, he does a terrible job showing it."
“Oh,” Yuta said. To his credit, she could tell that he was trying to understand. “That does sounds complicated.”
That was what finally made her laugh. Complicated was exactly what she’d spend her entire life avoiding. It was why she spent her weekends with her friends and why she was insistent on keeping things casual with Johnny.
She nodded in agreement, a pitiful smile lifting her lips. "I'm ready to take all of it too. That's how afraid I am to be without him. I keep playing his games and I keep making new ones. Hoping it will keep him interested. Hoping that for once he'd say more than okay. Even if it was a no." She groaned, once again angry at herself.
"What happened to you?" Both of them laughed, her face scrunching.
"I don't know, man. I've tried so many times to figure out how I let a person rattle the peace I’ve spent my entire life protecting. A man who could replace me without any effort."
"No one can replace you." He sounded offended.
She scoffed, mostly finding his reassurance touching.
"I get that you're moping, but you make no sense." Yuta's brows furrowed, "He's wrapped around your fingers."
"That's just because I keep him on his toes." She shrugged, "To overthrow predictability is to strive for more compelling experiences." She repeated the words Johnny had said to get once, the words leaving her tongue bitter. 
Yuta tapped his knuckles on the bar with a frustrated groan, pointing an accusatory finger at her. " I told you to not play fuck monopoly. You've gone and turned it into a tournament." Yuta groaned, knocking his shoulder against hers.
"I should have listened to you.” She admitted, lips twitching when Yuta looked surprised at the confession. “Sometimes I wish it wasn't so combative. If I wasn't so afraid of losing him every second he's with me, then maybe I'd love him without fighting it all the time."
The words left her heavier than she imagined, wishing she really could do it. When she wasn't so busy fighting it with all her might, she knew that loving him was worth all of the things it came with.
"You can just love him." Yuta's words made her close her eyes in denial, "Everybody is at the risk of being lost, no? Nobody comes with a guarantee, why should he? I could have a heart attack tonight while having the best sex of my life and you will never see me again. You don't fight our friendship? Why fight this?"
She looked up a little at loss, unnerved by the wisdom Yuta suddenly imparted.
"What?" He asked.
"I can't believe you just live, laugh, loved this." She snorted. Despite everything, she felt more grateful for Yuta now than she ever had before. "I appreciate this. Really, you are my ride or die." She gave his hand a squeeze.
"Aw, you're so sentimental. Do you still want me to keep you away from Johnny?"
"Yes."
Yuta sighed, "I guess I was also being too optimistic expecting you to change overnight. Think this through when you can."
"I will." She promised.
"That's good enough for me."

Leaning against the bar, head resting on her palm, she took in another deep sigh. (Y/N) had lost count of how many it had been. A deep melancholy had settled in her bones and it could neither be shaken off nor be cured.
"What can I get you?" The bartender came up to her.
Her order came to the tip of her tongue like it was second nature, a glass of whatever red was the best. But she stopped herself when she realised that it was Johnny's second choice, not hers. Then she thought to ask for a whiskey but immediately realised that it was Johnny's first. Maybe making a simple decision shouldn't be so complicated.
"A gin and tonic for the lady, Martin. The one you make with the lavender gin." Johnny spoke as he took the seat in front of her. "Since she walked into my gin joint of all places."
The words made her finally realise what he meant to dress as, a humorous smile tugging at her lips. 
It had been a while since she'd seen him properly. Johnny had spent most of the past few weeks on a work trip, spending the remainder of his time on the recording floor. The rest, she took the effort of being out of his way, taking his need for a break to heart. A break from her, he meant. It was the least she could do.
Right now, in the depths of her despair and with two glasses of two different liquors in her, she allowed herself a good look.
To her misfortune, he looked as he always did. As breathtaking as the first day she walked into this club. He was different behind these walls too; always at ease, not exhausted, not burdened by the condition of his position. In here Johnny was always just a man.
She seemed to understand then. He wanted a break to get back to this, to be carefree and fun. Without the predictability and bitterness that had settled into what they had. Her fingers squeezed the edge of the bar.
Johnny ran his index finger over the rim of his glass, mixing the sound with the tapping of his shoe— making some unknown melody. The action brought her attention to the flicker on his wrist, from where hung a single gold chain. Her eyes wandered to his collar, where the silver chain from earlier was missing.
"What brings you here, Miss?" He sat back in his chair, his eyes sparkling under the sparse lights.
She took a moment, taking his words in. His question was an open ended request. She could be anybody she wished right now, say whatever she wished. She could be carefree and fun, be as unpredictable as she liked. 
She could make him stay.
"A miscalculation. I thought it would be an enjoyable night. Yet I'm stuck making boring small talk with a man who thinks he can order drinks for me." She couldn't help the words, the anger from before still remaining. If he wanted time away from her then why did he keep coming in her way? Why did he make it hard for her to walk away from him?
She could be anybody at that moment. Yet, (Y/N) chose to be herself.
Johnny's eyes danced with embers, tongue darting out to lick his eager lips. He chose to be himself too.
"My apologies, Miss." He tipped his head, not meaning it in the slightest.
"You seem to know my tastes." She picked the drink up once Martin placed it in front of her, giving him a quick smile.
"I am a man of many talents." Johnny answered.
"I was talking to the bartender, Sir." She turned to him, nose raised high. Martin chuckled, apologising to Johnny almost immediately after he could. The title was meant to mock the one he used for her. Yet the very formation of the word on her tongue reminded her that it was a word between people they were trying to run away from at the moment.
Johnny's lips twitched and she couldn't tell what it implied, what he was reacting to.
"What brings you here?" She asked, humouring him at last.
"To this place?"
"To me."
Johnny chewed his bottom lip, clearly a little frustrated at her adamant need to be difficult. In truth, she couldn't be sure why she was being like this either. But Johnny liked when he was cornered, rendered retortless. And the distress marked so clearly across his face made the depths of her belly twist in a way it hadn't in weeks.
"Do you gamble?" She asked him, once again steering the conversation away from the dead ends she sent them into herself.
"I did once, lost everything I had."
"That must have been hard. My condolences to you."
"It doesn't matter to me. At least we'll always have Paris." He gave her a smile that was uncharacteristically warm. It pulled her out of the act, reminding her of what she was missing.
(Y/N) remembered making Ten and Johnny watch the movie. One of her all time favourites, she had warned him when he complained about the cliché premise. She knew that was why he was doing this. She just couldn't tell if it was out of spite or affection.
"My husband is waiting for me upstairs. I must go to him." She stood up, breath catching in her throat when he caught her wrist.
"Your husband is gambling."
"My husband doesn't gamble."
"We all gamble, my love."
She jerked her hand out of his hold, the words stinging her like a live wire. Sucking in her teeth she couldn't help the way her face twisted, seething.
"You will be back." Johnny sat back, face neutral.
"Why would I?" She tapped her hand on the bar, lifting her drink into her free hand.
"Because we all have something at stake." He let her hand go, eyes shifting with sorrow. She wondered if he'd always been such a good actor.

Johnny played her face over in his mind so many times that he hoped it would dull the pang in his chest. Could it really be that bad? Did she hate the idea that much? Was being in love with him that unpleasant a thought to her?
He groaned, sitting up on the sofa. The sound earned his friends attention, Ten turning to him with a particularly impatient gaze. He looked ready to say something.
"Can you just–" He began, his husband's hand coming up to stop him.
"Johnny needs another drink." Taemin gave Ten a warning look, turning to Johnny after. "There's a good Japanese whiskey out today." He offered with a smile, pitying him.
Johnny wanted to scoff, but he was aware that he had successfully over wrung everybody's patience. So he nodded and got up to leave.
He realised that he had become the reason he avoided the fancies of things as tedious as love, sitting here by himself drowning his aching sorrows in alcohol too expensive to be drunk so copiously. Just like the movie he had made fun of, Johnny was yet again a cliché.
"This needs to stop." He mumbled to himself, not remotely drunk enough to pull half the antics he did tonight.
Johnny had always believed that he’d find love when the time was right. He never sought it out because he believed that these things happened on their own. The fact that he spent the entirety of his twenties building his company was something he was proud of. He didn’t believe he had wasted the time.
In truth, Johnny had spent his entire life working towards something. Too occupied to ever feel loneliness in the way it was perhaps meant to be experienced. Which was probably why he wasn’t prepared for it. Love had finally found him and Johnny was plunged headfirst into wanting something that he failed to work towards. There was nowhere to go. What he wanted was right in front of him. He just didn’t have the courage to grab it.
He heard the hesitant intake of breath he’d recognise anywhere. The sound dragging him out of his musings.
"You were right." Her words pierced through his thoughts.
Johnny halted the urge to whip his head immediately at the sound.
"Are you here to finally gamble?" He spoke to his glass. She came around to stand in front of him, shaking her head.
Her hand reached out, moving the few stray strands off his face, When he flinched at the touch, she retreated her fingers quickly. 
"You aren't the only one to have lost everything in Paris." She spoke carefully.
He sighed, the sound more like the wince of hot sand when it finally rained. Looking up, his eyes met her vulnerable ones, the ones he’d keep making the same stupid mistakes for. The ones he'd happily run into a million dead ends for.
Johnny put his arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. She didn't fight it and he was sure that his relief was written across his face as he rested his forehead against hers.
“Who are you really?” He sighed.
“We said no questions.” She sighed along with him; caressing his hair, playing his game.
"We have to stop doing this to each other. To ourselves." He let the liquor speak for him, soaking up the courage it came with. Johnny took a breath, telling himself to take the leap; to say what he needed to say, to ask for what he yearned to have.
Her hand landed on his arm, squeezing. “Johnny.” Her whisper trembled past her lips.
“Hmm?” He said with incredible caution, squeezing her tighter and bringing her closer. Slowly he opened his eyes, waiting for her to speak.
“Let me go. I don't like this game anymore.” She tried to get away from his hold.
Johnny’s brows furrowed, “What?” He breathed out, not expecting that. He was being serious, he needed to speak before he lost his nerve.
“Just,” She huffed. “Move. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.” She hit his shoulder when he didn’t listen.
“You came to me.” He reminded her.
“Yes, and now I want to go.” She grit her teeth. “Please.” She pleaded, practically whimpered in pain, and his hands relaxed the very next moment, letting her go.
“Whatever, (Y/N). I’m tired of this.” He turned away from her.
Despite her earlier insistence, she faltered. He could see her watching him from the corner of her sight, hesitating. Just as he turned to call her out on it, or to finally ask (he wasn't sure), a voice called his name. Both of them turned.
“Hey Johnny,” It was Jessica, the model. “Can you come with me for a moment?”
Johnny turned his gaze to look at (Y/N), finding her jaw gritted and eyes fixed on the girl. His lips quirked despite himself, tongue sliding over his lower lip as it lifted.
“Sure.” He sat up, “I was done here anyways.” He stood up from his seat.

“What?” Johnny stopped in front of Ten. If the way he snapped didn’t betray his irritation, he hoped his face did. “Why did you send Jessica to call me?”
Ten turned to Johnny, taking in the apparent displeasure with a frown of his own.
“Yuta mentioned that he’s meant to keep the two of you apart. I thought I would add to the effort.” Ten shrugged.
Johnny ran her hands through his hair, “Okay.” He groaned, sounding anything but. “But why did you send Jessica?”
“She was passing by and she knows you.”
“Yeah but now (Y/N) thinks–” He paused, exhaling in a way that sounded like another groan. “Nevermind. Did you even want anything?”
“Not really.” Ten smacked his lips, “If I avoided all the people you’ve slept with in my club then I would have had to go call you myself.”
“You should have since you’re so passionate about this. (Y/N) can make her own decisions, just leave it alone.” He flicked a pillow from behind Ten, making the guy fall back into the sofa.
Ten turned around, eyes laced with intention.
“You’re a coward Johnny.”
“Ten.” Taemin cautioned but his conviction did not falter.
“You need to grow up and have a real conversation with the girl you love.” He continued, giving his best friend a pertinent look. “You’re just punishing yourself and that girl for no reason.” His face softened for a moment, looking like he was pitying Johnny. “Sometimes we ruin things beyond repair by letting it be.”
“You need to,” Johnny took a step closer, “Leave it alone.” It was a plea, partially because he knew Ten was right.
“He’s right.” Taemin interjected, “You can’t meddle in his matters.”
"I'm not meddling." Ten hissed at his husband, "I'm tired of watching my best friend wallow in a misery of his own making." He looked at Johnny, "It won't go away if you ignore it. And it won't change till you do something about it. So why?" He asked.
Johnny rubbed his hand over his face, not in his right mind or place to have this conversation. “You don’t get it.” He said with a lost voice.
“You have to do something, Johnny. Do you expect to live in limbo?” Ten added.
He expected her to deal the death blow. Something he would not say out loud. This entire time he had expected— practically hoped— that she would be the one who would have left by now. He would have accepted it, he would have swallowed it as an inevitable, and he would have taken solace in having been right from the start. That she would get bored of him.
He had been so sure of it that he wasn't prepared for this. He hadn't accounted for ever making it this far.
Johnny nodded to Ten, a silent promise. His friend was right, no matter how much it pissed him off. Johnny knew he would at least have to make a decision soon.

(Y/N) walked away from Johnny with cold hands. This was it, her steps faltered. She walked as far away as she could. All the preparation she had done for that exact moment had evaporated with his words. She couldn’t believe that she ran away like she did, only delaying the inevitable.
He was ready to do it, she could feel it in her bones. She could read it all over his face.
I’m tired of this.
That was the exact indifference to the matter she had feared most of all.
Whatever.
It was like being stabbed by a rusted knife— messy and unnecessary in its cruelty.
Whatever, (Y/N).
Her head hurt, she pushed through to get deeper into the club. To somewhere she could not be found. She needed to prepare herself better for this. She was afraid she’d beg him to say, afraid she’d cry. This wasn't the place or the state of mind she needed to be in for this.
Whatever.
She took a deep breath. No, she needed to prepare herself better.
She couldn’t believe that he would do it here. And he would have. Her exhale came out irate, he would have held her in place and told her he was tired of her.
He would have finished the thought had it not been for the model. Miss belly button herself. Her next breath came out utterly furious.
She was tired of this too, she coaxed herself. Tired of being stuck in limbo with the most elusive man she could have possibly laid hands on. She was tired of loving him too, she lied to herself.
She stopped, realising that she was in the emerald alcove. Yuta’s favourite corner. It was a cosy spot lined by arches that circled the area, littered with chairs that were closer together. Each arch had large and thick curtains that were never drawn, but nonetheless served as a visual policy that added to the sense of seclusion it was meant to emulate.
It was also the part of the club where Johnny had fucked his blonde companion on that night. 
(Y/N) shoved the thought out of her head as fast as it emerged. The first order of business would be to stop thinking about him all the damn time.
She picked up her drink from the bar, a sweet and potent cocktail this time, her kind of drink. Looking around to find a corner to sit in, her eyes landed on a man at the bar. One she recognised. One of the guys from the basement. The rough one with hooded eyes.
"The glasses really change your face." She sat down on the bar stool beside the one he occupied. The man looked up, surprised to see her.

"I do finally understand why new faces are such a sensation around here." She continued into a new territory, enjoying the confusion on his face.

"Speaking of, where's your friend?" She looked around, wondering if he was close.

She forced her eyes open, "It was you I missed. God I miss you so much I might just go mad."
Johnny forsake his control, slowly beginning to ease himself into her. Every muscle in her body went stuff, endless mutters leaving her lips.
"Really?” He asked through his teeth.
"Every goddamn day." She responded with the same gritted jaw.
He hummed, sounding infuriatingly unconvinced. "Why didn't you come to me then?" He stopped after only a few inches, pulling back out again.
"You told me you wanted a break. From me. What was I supposed to do? You weren't even here. You did everything you can to avoid me."
"You did it to me too." He muttered. To her surprise he pouted, the gesture giving her whiplash as he entered her again a little further this time. "You're so wet, baby. So tight." He groaned, eyes shutting for a moment like he was taking it in.
Baby. It was something he had never called her before. Her insides clenched around him in the same way her heart squeezed around those words— holding the moment as tight as she could. He'd used an array of words to refer to her, to call her, to praise her and degrade her. Yet nothing ever felt like this one. As unassuming as it was. Maybe she was actually mad.
"I can't come and just demand your attention. I'm not like you, I just can't do it." She huffed, frustrated and relieved at the same time.
"You're always demanding my attention."
"That's untrue."
"Is it?"
It wasn't. She did always make an effort to be at the forefront of her mind. Of course like many other things, she'd assumed she was good at keeping it covert. In actuality, like most other things, he was just letting her get away with it.
But this was different. This wasn't about teasing him or toying with his need for excitement. This was him wanting a change. She knew that because he told her as much. It hurt her beyond consolation and she couldn't be in front of him with that. 
It had been a year and she had probably become stale to him.
"Why are you fighting with me?" She said instead of acknowledging those things, "I thought you wanted to be in love?"
"This is how love feels like," He looked over her face. "So I'm told." He marched the words with the slow retreat of his length.
On this, she could agree with him. Of all the things people had to say about love, no one warned her how gut wrenching it could also be. She'd hate it if the good parts hadn't made up for it and more.
Her overwhelmed mind made the next question spill, "What does it feel like to you?" She asked him, not sure what she was expecting.
"Like this." He sighed, beginning to push so slightly back inside her. "Like being inside you."
The words made her clench around him yet again. She wanted nothing more than for him to mean those words. Moments like this made her wonder just how she had managed to mask her real feelings for so long. Especially now, when every inch of her seemed to be bursting with it.
"Kiss me, Johnny." Her eyes fluttered open, swallowing whatever remained of her pride to ask for what he already denied her. “Show me just how much you love me."
Johnny’s eyes softened like they melted— glistening despite being in the shadow.
Then his lips pressed against hers and she felt like her entire being lit up with the brunt of her relief. Her hands came to his neck, his to her hips, holding each other like it was the only thing they knew.
She sighed into his mouth without meaning to, the faintest moisture collecting in the corner of her eyes. She had truly missed kissing him. He had ruined the act of it. He had given her the privilege of kissing her, and now she considered it a privilege outright.
It would also be the thing she would miss the most. That and his smile, the sound of his voice when he laughed, the way he said her name. (Y/N) wondered if she'd ever truly be able to kiss another person again.
Johnny's lips moulded over hers like they were completing a puzzle. His hand stroked her thigh gently as her head tilted up to deepen the kiss. He kissed her slow and he kissed her fast, taking his time to navigate each familiar crevice. His sigh was touching, one of relief and comfort. She could get lost in that alone, locking the sound away in her memories.
She'd miss him so much when he was gone that she missed him already. Her arms pressed him closer to her, with more urgency. When he trailed his kisses down her neck, she used the opportunity to wipe her eyes against her shirt, still hanging on his shoulder.
Now Johnny entered her completely, and it took her breath away. Her arm squeezed his neck, his shoulder muffling her moan.
"Good?" He questioned, more as a gauge of her state than to fish for compliments.
"The best." She couldn't help herself if she tried. When he probed the thicker part of her walls she moaned his name so loud that she was sure it could be heard all the way to the basement.
"Yes right there." She added once the stars in her vision dulled.
"Yes, I know." He chuckled, peppering kisses all over her neck and cheek. "I know." He reassured.
"Don't stop." She whined, the pleasure mixing with the flurry of emotions to drive her mad. "Johnny, please."
"I won't." The words accompanied a tender hush. "I've got you." He promised.
"Johnny, I'm so—" He cut her off by grabbing her chin, lifting himself higher and making her look into his eyes.
"I love you. You." He tripped over his words. "I love you so much. More than life itself." He groaned, brows furrowing. "Fuck, you were just made for me and I spend all my time thinking about just that." His thrusts started to get sloppy, only spurred on by her tight grip around him. "That and just how much I fucking love you."
Her lips parted on their own accord, "Johnny, I–" But the words were cut off by a moan as he came with a sudden shiver. The feeling of his come shooting inside her sending her into her own orgasm as he kept up his ridiculous pace.
(Y/N) had never felt hollow the way she felt when he pulled out of her after what felt like hours of just laying there. She couldn't even feel the relief of his weight lifting off her chest. 
He was staring at her from the side, she could feel his eyes looking her over, analysing each movement on her face. When he took in a breath— to say something, she got out of bed. Once again fear grabbed at her, mind filling with every possible explanation he would have to dismiss everything that had just happened.
"I should get cleaned up." She mumbled to the floor, not even bothering to gather any of her clothes. She just went into the bathroom and stayed in the tub. Long enough to be sure he was asleep. 
Or gone.

(Y/N) woke up to the feel of Johnny’s hand sliding up her legs, resting on her hip. She smiled, pulling her head back to look at him through her slitted gaze.
“Morning.” Johnny’s voice, as deep as it was on most mornings, was too cautious. Her brows knit, confused for a moment. Then the previous night came back to her, reminding her that this wasn’t most mornings.
She hummed in response, “Where did you get pajamas?” She asked, eyeing the dark green t-shirt and pants that she was certain weren’t from his closet.
“The bottom drawers in the dresser always have a pair or two.” He informed her, the first she heard of this.
“Why didn’t I get one?” Her brows gathered. Johnny just gave her a cheeky grin.
“We haven’t spent a night here before, have we?” He questioned her.
“I haven’t.” She mumbled, shifting to bury her face further in his neck then she found it when she woke. But the reminder had ruined the harmless mood.
Pulling away felt too awkward to pull off so she just tried to shift again. Johnny must have read her mind because his arm came back to her leg, pulling it up on his own and leaving a chaste kiss on her forehead. A sigh left her lips, finding comfort in the familiar situation despite the circumstances. The air in the room was, nonetheless, tense. She told herself she'd take away these moments as relics.
None of them spoke to fill the silence. In truth, there was nothing to say. Only when it got too hot did she pull back from him. 
Silently, (Y/N) slipped out of bed, looking around to spot her clothes. A knock on the door made her rise, grabbing one of the robes that always hung from the bathroom door.
She opened it to find Charlie, one of the servers, standing with her things in his hand.
“Mr. Nakamoto sent your things.” He reached his hands out with her bag, “I took the liberty of bringing Mr. Suh’s things as well.” He handed her the paper bag as well.
“Thank you, Charlie.” She smiled, “I heard that you’re getting married?” She beamed and the man blushed in response, giving her a shy nod.
The overnight bag she had packed for Yuta’s house was heavy and made it difficult to open it with both hands full. She reached into the packet in which Charlie handed over Johnny’s belongings, taking his wallet out to pick out a note to hand to the man for his efforts.
“Next time you’re manning the bar, I want to know how you met your partner.” She smiled at him and he thanked her for the tip. Once she closed the door, she could put the bags down. Sighing from the release of the burden, she opened her bag to fish her own wallet out, replacing the money she took from Johnny.
“You didn’t have to do that.” His voice came from behind. She turned, finding him leaning against the wall and watching her carefully, arms crossed in front of his chest. She just shrugged in return, coming up to hand him his things before walking into the bathroom.
When she emerged, she was dressed for the day. Johnny was laying in bed with his feet on the floor, looking up from his phone when she walked into his line of vision.
“Where are you going?” He asked, brows furrowed like he was somehow expecting her to stay.
“Yuta and I are supposed to have brunch today. Hyuck too.” She spoke while clasping her watch.
“The breakfast here is pretty good. You can just eat downstairs.” Johnny sat up, phone dropping on his chest and then on the bed.
She looked up at him, lost. Breakfast was another thing she did not know the club provided.
Johnny seemed to catch on, eyes lighting up with amusement. "Really, it's like a hotel if you can ignore the large bowls of condoms everywhere."
She laughed under her breath, “Ten’s more entrepreneurial than you are.”
“I’ll have you know that it was my idea.” He said defensively, smiling nonetheless.
“Oh.” She chuckled, “My apologies. The condoms or the breakfast?" Picking up her shoes, (Y/N) sat down at the edge of the bed.
"The breakfast. The condoms are more of a legal failsafe. Your department more than mine."
Both of them laughed.
The next several moments were silent till she finished putting on her shoes, his hand coming to her waist as she started getting up.
He snaked the arm around her to halt her efforts, “Stay.” It was a single word packed with a heavy request. She could feel his eyes on her in the mirror in front of them, keeping her own gaze fixed on the floor.
“I can’t.” It was an equally simple response, laced with a heavy implication. She looked up at the mirror, meeting his gaze. “We have reservations.” It was a flimsy excuse that seemed to get a rise out of him. 
His soft eyes hardened, “You came prepared to stay the night, it seems.” His eyes drifted to her large bag.
It was a petty thing to say and for a moment she wondered if she should lie, give him the shot of provocation that he was seeking when he said the words. But the antagonism that filled the previous night had weighed down on her. She was tired.
"My original plan was to go for dinner and crash at Yuta's. It was Hyuck who insisted on coming here.” 
Johnny hummed, the sound heavy with the words he held back, unconvinced. It made her turn to him, “I have no reason to lie to you.” The words were the simple truth and she could tell that it did the very thing she was trying to avoid.
Her eyes wandered over his face, taking in the way he was trying to hide his outrage. She wondered if it was his ego or if she wanted to delude herself into thinking he actually cared. “All this time and I still don’t understand you.” She bit the corner of her mouth, regretting the words for the argument it would spur.
“It’s not like you ever ask.” He slid closer, nose knocking against hers. His eyes looked up from her lips expectantly. 
She wondered if he wanted a question or a kiss.
Her phone rang while she debated and she told herself it was divine intervention. Except it was just her best friend.
“Ask Johnny if he wants to go for brunch with us.” Yuta skipped the greetings to land the poignant jab. Of course he already knew who she was with. There was never going to be anybody else.
“No.” She got up from the bed, gathering her things. 
Despite every ounce of sense telling her otherwise, she turned to look at him, meeting his gaze to give him a silent farewell. There was the brimming fear of this being the last time, afterall.
The thought made her still. She had to shake her head and look away.
“Meet me downstairs. Did you find Hyuck?” She asked, walking out of the room.

Another week passed and (Y/N) had begun the process of mourning. Taking the last two days of the work week off, she had holed herself up in the safety of her apartment for three days now. The time had been spent consuming enough sugar to remind herself that she never had a sweet tooth, before shifting to the store of sour candy that was seemingly endless. Putting the first one in her mouth made her eyes well. 
Finally, she started looking for a different job, her constantly blurring eyes making the task take much longer than intended. 
That Saturday night, she fell asleep trying to imagine how she would hand in her resignation to him. What could she even say? How would she avoid explaining to him that she couldn’t be around him. 
She simply was not as aloof as she wanted both of them to believe.
The building phone never rang. The day doorman never had to see people come to her apartment unless they were with her or he knew them as her regular guests. The one on the night shift was new. 
Her first thought was the most obvious one. It was Johnny, it had to be. But she reminded herself that she had other people in her life. It could be Yuta with some ridiculous situation that only he could have. It could be Doyoung since she had let it slip that her non-relationship with her boss was beginning to sizzle off.
“Hello?” She finally answered the phone.
“I’m sorry Miss, there’s a man here that refuses to give his name. He says you know who it is. I told him that you don’t take visitors this late.”
She huffed. That reduced her guesses to two of the three. Nonetheless, she was grateful for the man’s caution.
“I’ll be down in a moment.” She sighed.
The elevator dinged and she clenched her hands inside the pocket of her hoodie. The one that was not hers. Despite her reasonings, she of course knew who was the moment the phone rang.
Johnny stood in the lobby with his hands on his hips, a frown set deeply on his face. His hair glistened under the lights and her eyes drifted to the doors behind him. 
It was raining.
“Your new place is definitely high on safety.” He remarked, lips still downturned. "Your doorman thinks I'm a thief who'd walk through the front door." He pointed behind him, a small grunt leaving his frustrated lips.
She loved him, she realised for the millionth time. This time with a sudden jolt. Despite every rational thought begging her to do otherwise. She loved him so dearly and so hopelessly that she didn't know what to do with it at all.
Johnny looked restless, his feet tapping against the floor. She could understand and she could forgive it. That was how much she loved him.
She loved him. A sigh of relief left her, like the crashing of waves on a rocky shore after it finally met land. It was useless to pretend otherwise. She loved him and she'd let him in anytime he showed up.
He was in a suit, the rain ruining the fabric permanently. She wondered why he was in one on a Saturday at midnight.
His hands dropped to his side, “You haven’t been coming to work.” He said as the gap between them began to close with each stride. “I was preparing for the quarterly distributor meeting and Kun’s notes made no sense. He’s on a work trip too. I had to call the entire legal team into work today because all of the copyright issues seem to be funnelled through you.” 
She stopped a few metres short of being in his personal space. “I’m entitled to my leaves.”
“Then you should brief the team properly so work doesn’t stop when you aren’t around.”
He was right, she gave him a nod to affirm it as well.
“Did you get what you needed?” She asked, flexing her fists in the safety of the deep pockets of the hoodie.
“Yes. The intern, Hendery, had a decent idea. I hired him tonight.”
“Good. He’s good enough to replace me with enough training.”
Johnny’s frown went from expressing discontent to a confused one. She'd put the hint in his mind now. 
“HR said you’re sick.” Johnny mumbled after a moment of silence, shuffling.
“It’s a cold. I just needed the time off to feel better.” 
Johnny nodded, hands coming back to his hips. He kept nodding, deep in thought.
“Is that the reason you came all the way here? I was sleeping.” She finally huffed, feeling the brunt of her own indignation suddenly.
His brows knit, arm coming up so he could glance at his watch.
“Oh.” His face smoothened in one go, “I didn’t realise it was this late. I was just driving around to clear my head.” He slowly put his hand down, biting down on his bottom lip.
She finally took her own hands out of her pockets, only to cross her arms in front of her chest. She knew why he was here, but she wanted him to admit it. She needed him to confirm so she could act like she wasn't giving in without a fight. Her dignity was the one thing she wanted to walk away with.
“I’m sorry!” He finally huffed, following with a groan that came from somewhere deep inside him. She blinked, incredibly surprised. “Is that what you want me to say?” He huffed again.
The last part ticked her off, “I don’t want you to say anything. What are you sorry for? Is it for waking me up because that is fair, but it’s not the first time you’ve done it.” The words were deliberately cautious.
Johnny groaned, running a hand over his face. “You’re making this so much harder than it needs to be.”
“What are you sorry for?” She asked, raising her chin and burying her brimming hope.
He gave her a look of furious disbelief.
“For once,” He groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose like he was second guessing himself.
“What?” She asked with more anger bubbling in her words, taking two steps closer. He took notice, his own two steps closing their gap. Now they were in each other’s personal space.
“For once, can’t you give in to me?” There was a desperation that made the edge of his words blunt.
She stared at him with disbelief. "From the moment I met you I've only ever given into you."
"I'm not talking about that. I'm not talking about work, or bed. I mean your pride. Put it aside for once. Tell me you want me. Give in to me." He took just another step closer.
Remembering the place, she turned to the doorman, “You can let him in next time.” She raised her voice enough to be heard by the man. 
Her gaze softened when it came back to Johnny and she prayed to god that he couldn’t see the glisten in them. Finding a real touch too scathing to execute, she settled for hooking her finger through one of his belt loops.
"You wouldn't be here if you believed I don't."
"I'm here because I'm giving up. I'm done. I don't want a change, I want you."
The confession washed her in a flood of relief. She would love him as long as he'd let her.
"And I came down here because I'm giving in. I don't want a break. Either leave me once and for all or never say that to me again."
Johnny chewed on his bottom lip, taking in the tempest in her eyes.
“Take me upstairs.” He asked like that wasn’t exactly where she was taking him. Like it wasn’t the inevitable outcome he had in mind when he walked into the lobby. For all his claims, he knew how quick she gave into him. “You can sleep, you look so tired. I don't want anything, I just want to be here.”
“You will sleep too.” She announced, turning away to pull him towards the elevator.
Once on the elevator, a thought made her freeze, “The place is a mess.” She warned him, remembering the cave she had turned the place into in the past week. 
He gave her a cautious look, “(Y/N). Baby.” He laughed, her gut kicking up an assault at his tender tone. “Your place is always a mess.”
 She frowned, taking her hand out of his to smack his chest. 
“Hey!” She huffed.
Johnny groaned, a grin tugging at his lips after.

wait so, what is the age order of the bone heads? Or atlesst how would you order them?
THIS IS A HARD QUESTION
Some of the guys doesn't have an official year-of-death/year-of-birth/period-when-they-lived, or even their current age, but I have some "official" info
Daniel - He's the one with a specific year of birth and death (1254-1286), with simple math he lived till 32 and has been dead for 738 years, a total of 770 years till this day
Lewis - In his wiki says he died at 21, the first Mystery Skull shorts doesn't specify in which period of time everything happened, but probably he just been down there a couple of years
Manolo - In the events of the movie he had 19, and he had kids at 22, at least from his wiki, I didn't find what period of time was when it developed the events of the movie, but based of the dialogue of Manolo's cousins, they fought in the mexican revolution and won, between 1910-1917, so probably the events of the movie happened after that, so he can't have more than 126 years, counting living and dead ones
Brook - We know he died at 38 and actually in the manga he has 90, the only thing is that the manga probably isn't in an modern era, I don't know in which period of time One Piece is inspired, so that's unknown
Jack - Doesn't have an official age, probably older than 20-30, also it isn't specified in which year the events of nightmare before chritsmas happened, if we take the year of the movie, near the 90's as the times of the events, then Jack could be between his 40-50
Manny - This is a tricky one, we don't know the age of Manny, even if the events looked like it happened near the 40's or 50's (Grim Fandango's second years is VERY inspired in the movie Casablanca, the events of that movie are in the middle of the WW2, so is very probably that hapenned in those years) we don't know if Manny is older than that. There's a reference in the click and point game Monkey Island and there's Manny with a pin that says "Ask me about Grim Fandango", this could be a simple reference or maybe Manny is HELLA OLD
This is the information I could gathered, you can do your own order of age, cause for now I'm not sure what to believe, if anyone knows some extra info I would appreciate it 😅

One more Eiffel question: do you think Eiffel likes reading? He references books fairly often but does he enjoy it? If yes what kind of stuff would he like.
... it's complicated! eiffel references books, but notably he references a lot of classics with movie adaptations. there's no way he wasn't a "i watched the movie; good enough" book report kid.
when someone asked gabriel urbina what eiffel's favorite book would be, he suggested either splinter of the mind's eye (first star wars EU novel) or something "unpretentious, like a pulpy 80s action movie of a book." and he said eiffel might like something like fight club or high fidelity, which... yeah, those are books he'd pick up because he's seen and likes those movies.
like, eiffel has read books. he is capable of reading books. he even wants to read them, sometimes. but, i think there are way, way more books he's picked up, read a few chapters of, and never went back to than ones he's read cover to cover. he likes reading out loud; he'd love to read to someone, and do character voices. i think that also helps him process it more easily; if he's reading quietly on his own, he's absolutely spacing out and realizing he doesn't remember anything from the last couple of pages on a regular basis.
(when he's reading hui's lovecraft book out loud in lights out, he says "it's no r. l. stine", which is a typically flippant eiffel remark, but also does not necessarily bode well for the last time he read regularly.)
as an aside, i think sometimes people defend eiffel's intelligence in the wrong way. like, he's smart! he's good at some very difficult, very technical things. he thinks very quickly, he makes connections, he's a lot more capable of understanding complex ideas than he makes himself out to be. but he's not an academic. he's not book smart, he does not have a four year degree in anything, and he's not reading a lot of classics for fun. (though, i think he could like vonnegut.)
in my opinion, that ties into something else gabriel urbina said - when someone asked about eiffel referencing casablanca, and whether he likes it. eiffel has seen a lot of older movies he's not even necessarily into because he was an unsupervised "tv is my parent" kid, and, as gabriel urbina said. if it's a choice between going to bed or watching casablanca, that's not really a choice at all. a lot of the classics he references are science fiction, and he'd watch a lot of those film adaptations on purpose, but others? might've just been on tv.

4. I'm here, aren't I? + 26. Please, I need you to believe me. Also for @starry-eyed-guttersnipe who requested 26. this was supposed to be angsty and instead is a season one divergence (??) whoops. also spoilers for Casablanca
Eddie is just trying to mind his own business in the café, just drink his coffee, read the paper -- it's a new routine he's trying now that he lives in a town where people do things like that on week days -- but the breakup at the table behind him is going...
Well, it's rough.
"Please," the guy says and he sounds close to tears. "I need you to believe me."
"It's pretty clear that you're still exactly the same kid you were when we met," the woman says. "Goodbye, Buck."
There's the sound of chairs scraping, and of this Buck character pleading no, Abby, wait-- and then Eddie sees a flash of strawberry blonde hair disappear outside the café doors and the dejected slump of the guy leaning forward onto his own table.
Eddie manages to mind his own business for a few more sips of coffee, and then he hears Buck sniffle and all of his dad instincts kick in.
From the timbre of the conversation, Eddie's expecting Buck to be eighteen at the outside when he turns around. But Buck is within a rounding margin of Eddie's age, as it turns out, even if the red tipped stuffy nose and the red rims around his blue eyes make him seem younger.
When Eddie turns around, he makes a valiant effort to clean himself up and look like he's not crying in a café, but it doesn't quite work.
"Sorry to disturb your coffee," he says.
"You didn't," Eddie assures him. "You okay?"
The almost-laugh Buck replies with sounds kind of like a joint dislocating.
"What didn't she believe?" Eddie asks instead.
After a moment of hesitation, Buck launches into a tawdry tale about a string of girls insisting he'd been sending them love letters, including one who'd apparently come to his place of work and slapped him over it, despite the fact Buck hasn't sent a single person love letters including his still-bloodily-recent ex.
"Which is about the point in the explanation where everyone stops believing me and ditches," Buck says. He looks between Eddie's still mostly full ceramic for-here mug and the door like he's expecting Eddie to drop his coffee and run. "And so no one apparently trusts me enough to help me figure out what the hell is going on."
Eddie did not know Buck fifteen minutes ago, but he's always been good at quick reads of a situation. And Buck, he's pretty sure, has zero understanding of how to lie convincingly.
"I'm here, aren't I?" he says. "Maybe I can help."
"R-really?" Buck asks. "Don't you have, like, I dunno, a life?"
Eddie shrugs. "Kid's already at school, and I don't have class today."
"You've got a kid?" Buck asks. "That's so cool. I love kids."
"I love this one," Eddie says. "I'm all he's got."
"I bet you're an awesome dad," Buck says. Eddie shrugs and he must look a little uncomfortable because Buck pivots. "What's your class in?"
"Fire academy," Eddie says. "I'm training to be a firefighter."
To his surprise, Buck's entire face lights up. "Seriously? I'm a firefighter, too!"
Eddie can't help but smile. "Well, then I think I'm like extra obligated to help out."
"Yeah?" Buck asks, and smiles back. "I'd like that."
It takes them the better part of a day and they do eventually convince one of Buck's shiftmates to help out, and in the end, after Chimney's gone home to shower extensively, Eddie offers to let Buck use his shower so he doesn't have to go back to his ex's apartment.
"You sure that's okay?" Buck asks.
"Yeah," Eddie says, steering Buck into his truck. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
He smiles a little at his own reference and then catches sight of Buck's head tipped sideways in confusion.
"That's from something, isn't it?" Buck asks.
Eddie blinks at him. "Casablanca? The two guys walking away after Bogie's lost the girl?"
Buck stays confused. "That's in Morocco, right?"
"Okay," Eddie says. "You can use my shower, and then we're having movie night."
It is the first of many.

Write Your Hero: How to Create Fan-Favorite Protagonists, from Heroines to Anti-Heroes and More by Lewis Jorstad
This is a really handy guide for fiction writers at any stage of their career. The author explains many concepts from first principles without going into excruciating detail (such as a thumbnail sketch of the Three Act Plot Structure) and provides some handy references at the end if you do want to get more detail. I particularly like the way he used a very diverse range of movies (movie plots are quicker to summarize than novel plots) to illustrate his examples, from Schindler’s List and Casablanca to Moana, the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
If you don’t already understand that a well-written hero (called the hero for simplicity but more clearly defined as the protagonist) is the difference between a memorable story beloved by readers and one that’s instantly forgettable, you will by the end of this book, and you’ll understand those hard-to-define traits that make a hero unforgettable.
Jorstad carefully breaks down what a hero is and how to build a great one in a series of short chapters, each one ending with a few questions, and in my opinion, if you read this with a notebook and answer each question as you go through, by the end of the book you’ll have not only a character guide, but also a character-driven blurb, a synopsis and a full plot for your novel, with an understanding of exactly who your protagonist(s) are, what they want, what lessons they are going to learn and why exactly they are the only person who can bring a satisfactory resolution to the story.
Helpfully, at the end of the book Jorstad puts all these questions into a summary chapter. I’m actually planning to put them into a spreadsheet and then I can complete one column per character - as I do think that in romance you often have more than one protagonist and therefore you need to plot it out twice.
In summary: whether you’ve got a completed draft and you know there’s SOMETHING not quite there about your protagonist(s) or you just have the germ of an idea you haven’t started writing yet, I think using the guidelines here will really help you create a memorable character driving the plot of your story. This is a well-written, excellent guide, and I’d highly recommend it to any fiction writer at any stage of their journey.

Ava and Deborah’s Romantic Parallels Part 3B
Harry & Sally from When Harry Met Sally… and Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner

I’m talking about the last 2 paralleled couples outside of the Hacks-universe. Last time, I talked about the parallel between Carol’s Therese and Carol. Today, we’re going to talk about one of the one of the most iconic romantic comedy couples of all time, Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally… and real-life comedic duo and long-time couple Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner. 
Let’s get started!

Harry and Sally from ‘When Harry Met Sally…’
As far as I can tell, this is the only fictional straight couple (that isn’t in the Hacks-universe) that Deborah and Ava are compared to, but the writers couldn’t have picked a more iconic one. 
Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair consider this movie to be the greatest romantic comedy of all time. 
Indie Wire considers it the 6th greatest romantic comedy of all time, behind 30s and 40s classics of the genre like The Philadelphia Story and It Happened One Night which paved the way for this movie. 
For many modern romantic comedies, When Harry Met Sally… is considered the blueprint. It is the perfect combination of both being incredibly funny and sweet and, as with many romantic comedies, it has a happy ending where the two confess their love and get married.
The Telephone Scene
The scene that even makes the comparison clear in the first place is the telephone scene between Ava and Deborah at the end of Episode 4. 
It’s an exact recreation of the iconic telephone scene in When Harry Met Sally….

Just like Harry and Sally, Deborah and Ava are talking to each other while watching something on TV. Harry and Sally are watching Casablanca and Deb and Ava are watching Law & Order. 
Here’s one reviewer’s interpretation of this iconic scene: 
“The scene works mostly to suggest, in a movie about love’s contingencies, a cosmic kind of wrongness. Here are Harry and Sally, who should be together but are not, engaged in the drowsy conversation a couple might have—but over the cold stretch of physical distance.” Source
In the same way, Deborah and Ava are separated by distance and the framing suggests that what should be happening is that Ava and Deborah should be together physically in the same bed talking instead of apart. 
Deborah and Ava are suggested even more as perfect for each other by each having their own complimentary side of the bed. Although when they’re together, they tend to switch sides which might suggest they move to their ‘correct’ side when they’re together. Their rightful place. In scenes showing Ava and Deb’s loneliness, Deb is framed on the left and Ava on the right. 
Also, for no real practical reason both Ava and Deborah are talking to each other on landline phones. Ava seems surprised the landline phone rings at all and that’s because she’s used to being contacted exclusively by her cellphone. I know almost no one that owns a landline anymore except for those over 60 (Love you, Deb). Deb must have Ava’s number in her cellphone, so what’s the point of them talking over a landline? 
The only explanation is to show a modern update to that scene with cordless but nevertheless still landline phones. 
(An in-universe explanation might be that Deborah called her via landline because she might have wanted an excuse if Ava questioned her why she was calling her and not the hotel staff. A very good question, hypothetical!Ava. Deb could just say “Well, I tried to call them but they were no help, so I called your hotel room.” Yeah...Deborah’s excuse is bullshit. She just wanted to talk to her.)
This phone scene from WHMS is actually a reference to another romantic comedy, Indiscreet, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.

The biggest difference between these two scenes is the level of development. At this point, Ava and Deborah are tentatively becoming friends as indicated by the solid black line dividing them (there’s still a barrier there) whereas Harry and Sally's dividing line is more blurred, almost blending into each other’s spaces. 
The only interpretation of this scene is a romantic one because, if the frame is suggesting they should be in bed together, the only conclusion is they should be a couple living together. 
And the fact that the split screen in this scene is an homage to two other famous romantic comedies of the past that used this technique is further proof that we’re meant to take this as romantic, not platonic. 
Similarities Between Harry and Sally and Ava and Deborah
Beyond just the one scene, the characters of Harry and Sally and their dynamic are actually very similar to Ava and Deborah. 
The couples’ similarities aren’t a one-to-one match, but overall it seems Harry is more similar to Ava while Deborah is more similar to Sally. 
Harry

Frequently talks about death; says he spend hours and days thinking about death
Harry: “I spend hours, I spend days [thinking about death]...”
Ava: “I told you how I’d kill myself a million times”
He goes on lots of rants that includes odd observations and tends to think he’s deeper than he actually is

Deborah: “Well, if I’m not upset about it, you shouldn’t be” Ava: “Yeah, but I mean it’s upsetting, you know?”
Less open about sexuality
Harry to Sally: “Obviously, you haven’t had great sex yet.”
Deborah doesn’t make a single positive mention of having sex with men the entire season. I could totally picture Ava saying this to Deb lol. 
Enemies to Friends to Lovers
This movie is one of the best examples of the enemies to friends to lovers trope in film history. 
Both this movie and Hacks seem to share an idea of romance where two people who challenge each other and are honest about each other’s strengths and weaknesses are the ones we should be with. 
There’s something incredibly compelling about two people who couldn’t seem more different, overcome their initial misjudgments towards each other, see each other honestly and vulnerably in their flaws, negotiate their combined strengths and move towards personal growth by choosing to love each other. Their love story is hard earned. 
With Ava and Deborah, naturally, this factor is turned up to 11. Ava and Deborah couldn’t be more different on paper, but the show suggests that’s exactly why they’re so perfect for each other. The goal isn’t just to love each other, but to help each other self-actualize as well. 
Marie: “This is just like in the movies, remember, in the Lady Vanishes, where she says to him you are the most obnoxious man I have ever met-” 
Sally: “The most contemptible” 
Marie: “-Then they fall madly in love”
Just like so many romantic comedies before it, Hacks follows the trope of falling in love with the person who is the most likely to get under your skin. Ava and Deborah hold up mirrors to each other and force each other to face what they’re afraid of in the other. But as a result, Ava and Deborah make each other better people. 
Harry: “When we first met, I didn’t really like you that much--”
Sally: “I didn’t like you.” 
Harry: “You did too. You were just so uptight then. Now you’re much softer.”
Harry: “The first time we met, we hated each other” 
Sally: “You didn’t hate me. I hated you.” 
Harry: “The third time we met, we became friends” 
Sally: “We were friends for a long time”
Harry: “And then we weren’t”
Sally: “And then we fell in love” 
Much like Harry and Sally, initially, Ava and Deborah seem to be both attracted and repelled by each other. The physical attraction is early on, but they are put off by each other’s abrasive exteriors. 
But it is through continuous interactions with each other where they have to compromise and work at understanding each other that they shave off each other’s more abrasive aspects which were clearly put there as a form of self-protection. It is through their acknowledgement of each other’s vulnerability and the hard-earned emotional connection that Harry and Sally and Ava and Deborah’s love story becomes so compelling. 
The Theme of Romantic Loneliness
Harry: “Do you still sleep on the same side of the bed?” 
Ava and Deborah only sleep on one side of the bed despite having the whole bed to themselves as if a person is perpetually missing. 
Harry: “I miss her” 
Sally: “I don’t miss him. I really don’t.” 
Harry: “Not even a little?” 
Sally: “You know what I miss? I miss the idea of him” 
Harry: “Maybe I only miss the idea of Helen. No, I miss the whole Helen” 
Both of them are lonely, but their loneliness shows up a bit differently. Deborah clearly doesn’t want Frank back. She’s more lonely for the idea of a partner that would have the good parts of Frank, not a particular person she’s missing. Ava, however, starts the series reeling from being dumped by Ruby 3 months prior. She’s lonely for Ruby in particular. Before sleeping with the Postmate, she’s looking at a picture of Ruby. But just like with Harry’s ex-wife, Ruby doesn’t want her. 
Other Fun Comparisons
The couple opposite them and their friends, Jess and Marie, almost immediately get together while Harry and Sally spend 12 years building up their relationship. 
Marcus and Wilson are paralleled with Deborah and Ava and they pretty much go from occasionally seeing each other and saying “Hi”...straight to blowing each other. Good for them. Jess and Marie get married while Marcus and Wilson break up but I think it’s likely if they’re meant to be together they might commit to each other before Deb and Ava do before the end of the series. Queer women like the slow burn anyway, so it’s fine (*slowly dies inside*). 
Sally slaps Harry when they’re fighting about Harry leaving Sally after they’ve had sex
Sally: “You wanna act like what happened didn’t mean anything” 
Harry: “I’m not saying it didn’t mean anything. I’m saying why does it have to mean everything?” 
Sally: “Because it does, and you should know that better than anyone because the minute it happens you walk right out the door” 
Harry: “I didn’t walk out, I…”
Sally: “No, sprinted is more like it” 
Deborah: “I know you ran back to LA for a job interview. And now, it sounds like you might have a follow-up?”
Ava: “Okay, yeah. I did go. But I didn’t take the job.”
Not the same situation, but Deborah felt she was in a vulnerable position starting the new show and she felt that Ava just left her after she opened up to her and trusted her. This led to the slap. 
Harry: "The other night I made love to this woman and it was so incredible. I took her to a place that wasn't human. She actually meowed" 
Jess: “You made a woman meow?”
Okay, so I admit I’m being cheeky with this. We cannot confirm or deny whether Ava would have this power, but I feel like most of the fandom agrees that when Ava and Deb have sex? Ava is going to BLOW Deb’s mind and vice versa. 
Conclusion
Comparing Deborah and Ava to such an iconic rom com couple is a very good sign as to what their intentions are. It’s difficult to say that the intention is meant to be taken in a platonic way considering the scene they chose and because the film they’re referencing is very much about that tension between friendship and romance. 
Evoking the greatest romantic comedy of all time? Good sign we’re watching a romantic comedy....and you know what happens at the end of a rom com. 
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner
So now let’s talk about the sapphic couple AKA the one that actually matters. I’m kidding...like half kidding. Anyway!
A very interesting surprise was that there was a parallel to a real-life famous couple to Deborah and Ava. And not just any couple, but THE lesbian comedy power couple: Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner.

I feel like I should make a disclaimer that obviously Lily and Jane are real people, so the comparisons are going to be kind of vague and I think are more important when you think about it as a concept rather than focusing on details. And I also want to be clear that I don’t claim to be a Lily and Jane scholar or all that knowledgeable about comedy history. I tried to do my best in terms of research but I may miss a few things. People who are Jane and Lily fans feel free to correct or add things on.  
I watched and read a few interviews with Jane and Lily and I looked at a couple of their collaborative works: The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe and And That’s the Truth.

Lily’s Time Magazine Cover
Deborah has the exact same design of Lily’s March 28th, 1977 Time magazine cover.

The design is very close, deliberately so: typography is the same, the star pattern is a little different but very close, the formal attire and the wording is similar. 
The differences are one color choice and Deborah’s more feminine appearance. Deborah is even wearing a crown, so you can draw it specifically to Lily’s headline as the “New Queen of Comedy”. In fact, compared to Lily’s genderbending style, Deb is shown to be in the most highly coveted feminine garb that a woman can aspire to, a beauty pageant queen.

Deborah’s general appearance, style of comedy and demeanor can remind you of comics like Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers (especially her). Deborah is clearly meant to be a representation of many amazing female comedian trailblazers, Lily included. 
But the thing about the Lily reference is that it doesn’t seem to be saying much about their comedic styles. 
Deborah is a stand-up comic who seems to more or less show a persona of herself on stage. Lily does sketches where she performs as various characters. Deborah does observational and experience humor and has done some insult humor in the past. Lily seems to use her characters to express her thoughts and feelings about the world and society. 
Jane and Lily also seem to have a much more countercultural stance in their comedy. They talk about issues such as sex and gender politics, environmentalism, critiques of capitalism, racism, homophobia and mental health issues. 
Deborah has a lot of issues she believes in and with Ava’s help I think we’re going to see them explore that more, but as of right now, the comparisons of the work itself seem few. Lily would definitely be considered more to the left politically than Deb and her style of presenting these ideas is different. 
So in terms of comedic styles, they have almost nothing in common. They share some feminist sensibilities, but in Lily’s work it’s always more of a consistent and stronger theme whereas after her career fallout, Deb seemed to back away from that a bit. 
So why the Lily reference? 
Well, first, let’s give some background information about Lily’s Time magazine cover. 
“As Tomlin put it, while speaking to the Washington Post for an in-depth profile, she resisted going public about her sexual orientation for a long time though she ‘never did not come out.’ And, she added, TIME offered to put her on the cover in 1975 if she would come out — an offer she rejected. ‘I wanted to be acknowledged for my work,’ she told the Post, ‘I didn’t want to be that gay person who does comedy.’
Tomlin did appear on the cover of TIME two years after that — and as it that happened, she got her wish. The cover proclaimed her the New Queen of Comedy, and the story inside focused on her career and its development, not her personal life. There’s a brief aside about her decision to study medicine after high school, when other girls where getting married, but no space is devoted to her romantic life. She is, as she had hoped to be, a comedian — with no qualifiers.
That’s true even though the story does read quite differently in retrospect, in at least one respect. Jane Wagner, now Tomlin’s wife, is quoted as a ‘friend and collaborator’ (Wagner has written and/or produced some of Tomlin’s best-known work); it’s also noted that they live together in Los Angeles.”
According to Lily about how “out” she was in throughout her career: 
“Tomlin said it had long been an accepted fact in the industry that she was a lesbian, even if she hadn’t said it explicitly.
‘I wasn’t totally forthcoming. Everybody in the business knew I was gay, and certainly everybody I worked with and everything like that,’ she explained.
‘I just never had a press conference to announce it.’”
You can’t separate Lily’s queerness from this cover. 
Again, considering that Lily and Deb don’t share much comedically this seems like a call to reference the specific instance where a rather out lesbian who was dating her comedic writing partner decided not to publicly declare her sexuality and instead wanted the focus to be on her career. 
Like with Carol, there’s also an intentional reference to a love story and showing how Deb’s life has gone on a different path. But the point of this is to suggest regardless of the different life circumstances and choices, Deb shares a core quality with Carol and Lily with her queerness. 
I’ll talk about it more in the upcoming Deborah & Sexuality post about Deb’s performance of high femininity and how that’s a sign of compulsory heterosexuality. 
On this cover, Deb is dressed up as a beauty pageant queen, so the implication of performing high femininity is obvious here. In beauty pageants, it’s a literal competition between women on who can be considered the most ideal form of womanhood. And for a while, Deb was considered that, “TV’s It Girl”. 
It girl: (1) a young woman with sex appeal and a magnetic personality.
(2) an extremely popular and attractive young socialite or celebrity.
Lily doesn’t do this and she’s clearly comfortable in her queerness even if she didn’t want to announce it publicly in Time magazine. At the time of publication, Deb was still married to Frank but their marriage was about to explode a few months later. And while we know that Deb’s career taking off and Frank’s jealousy led to him destroying their marriage, this cover is a suggestion that it was also Deb’s sexuality that drove them apart. Frank felt emasculated both by his wife outshining him and her lack of attraction to him. 
Unlike Lily, Deborah is deep into compulsory heterosexuality during the time of this cover. Just like “Carol” didn’t have her Therese, “Lily” doesn’t have her Jane in 1976. 
And who frames and gives her this cover? 
Her writing partner and the woman she’s falling in love with. 
Jane was mentioned in Lily’s piece, but only as a friend and collaborator and roommate all of which is exactly what Ava was when she made this gift. But that’s obviously not all Jane is to Lily and the Time magazine knew that and so do the Hacks writers. 
Lily and Jane 
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner met on March 31st, 1971 when Lily was looking for a writer to help her with the character of Edith Ann on her upcoming album, And That’s the Truth. She saw Jane’s debut teleplay, J.T. (which won her a Peabody Award), and reached out to see if she was interested in collaborating. 
“Tomlin said she fell in love with Wagner before their collaboration on the comedy album ‘And That’s the Truth‘ — seemingly at first sight. A friend brought her to my hotel room,’ Tomlin narrated, ‘and I tell you, in two minutes, I fell in love with her. She had on hot pants, stretchy boots that went up to her knee, and a little backpack. I don’t know what it was, but I was in love.’ Tomlin said she was so stricken that, after leaving the next day to perform a show in Chicago, she flew immediately back to New York to find Wagner. ‘I called Jane immediately, and I said, ‘Look, I don’t have much time, but I have to see you.’ She agreed to see me, and we had our first date,’ said Tomlin.”

Deborah: “Other than walking those chimney sweep boots on my silk rug?”
Obviously, the meeting between Deborah and Ava goes much differently. The biggest difference being that the two are not willing to admit they need each other, at first, and that they’re antagonistic towards each other. But something about this meeting clearly sparks something in Deborah, the Lily parallel, and she runs after Ava. 
And again, we come to a theme of Deborah’s desire for a romantic and creative partner. 
“Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner have been partners in life and work for over forty years with an unbeatable, unstoppable creative comedic career in television, sound recording, film, theatre, and animation endearing themselves to generations of Americans. Although Lily Tomlin is the famous “front-woman” of this incredible team – her most meaningful work has been created in partnership with Jane Wagner.” 
Lily and Jane have worked on numerous projects including many of her specials (which have won multiple Emmys), albums and movies like The Incredible Shrinking Woman and Moment By Moment. 
Perhaps their magnum opus though would be the one-woman stage play penned by Wagner and performed by Tomlin, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. If you haven’t watched it, I’d highly recommend it as it’s fantastic. Tomlin won a Tony Award for her performance which she rightfully deserves. In it, Tomlin plays 12 characters who come from all backgrounds with a thread connecting all of them. 
“Partly an illuminating time capsule, reflecting on the social and political fallout from the tumultuous two decades that preceded it, the work also resonates throughout as a far grander narrative, a tale of the elaborate interconnectedness that holds together our peculiar, captivating species.”
What seems to be so significant about Lily and Jane’s story is the special relationship between a writer and a performer.

“Wagner has ceded the spotlight to Tomlin, whom she owes her courage as a writer, Wagner said. ‘When I got confidence, it was because of Lily, who believed in my work,’ Wagner said during the celebration. ‘We loved similar things, and it was just kind of remarkable that we were on the same page, aesthetically. Her appreciation of my work meant all the difference to me. I saw her motivation. I saw her drive, and her strength taught me something.’”
Ava: “But I gotta figure something else out. Cause I’m done.” 
Deborah: “Well, no. You can’t quit. You’re too good”
One problem with the Frank and Deborah relationship is that they both desired the spotlight. They were both performers who wanted to be the most well-known. But Ava takes the good thing Frank and Deborah had in common, their love of comedy, but puts in a way that allows each of them to support each other with their respective strengths. Ava can help give voice to the thoughts and feelings that Deborah has had trouble expressing and Deborah can bring to life and express Ava’s thoughts in a way that gets people to listen. It is a relationship that is about collaboration and not competition. 
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner are the example of two creative women who made their mark on the comedy world and shared a deep, profound romantic love that continues to this day. They have shared their lives as creative soulmates and romantic partners for 50 years. 
In particular they are an example of a special magic that can exist between a writer and a performer. 
Gee, I wonder who that sounds like?

Conclusion
Hacks reads as a love letter to American comedy history, just as much as it seems like a love story between Deborah and Ava. 
Lily and Jane are unique in being a long-lasting romantic and creative partnership between two women who have had an indelible effect on American comedy. 
As put by Film at Lincoln Center in their film series about Lily and Jane’s work: “The scope of their work suggests the breadth of a lasting and fruitful partnership that reshaped the art of American comedy and expanded its feminist imagination.” 
There aren’t that many comedy power couples you can point to, but it’s rather interesting that they choose Lily and Jane even amongst the few that exist. And while it’s possible Lily exists in this universe considering Deb stole her cover, there’s a good chance she doesn’t. 
Again, Deborah and Ava don’t exactly represent Lily and Jane in the details, rather Lily and Jane represent a concept. 
The concept of the empowering nature of a challenging and unconditionally loving creative and romantic partnership. 
In other words, the whole theme of Hacks. 
If, in this universe, Lily and Jane don’t exist then there’s a good suggestion that Ava and Deborah are the new ‘Lily and Jane’.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is content to be content.
The original Space Jam was a calculated marketing exercise. Michael Jordan was the biggest sports star of the nineties, and Space Jam capitalised on Jordan’s brand potential while also allowing the athlete to refashion his own narrative into a family-friendly mythology. Space Jam packaged Jordan for a generation, smoothing the wrinkles out of his story by presenting a wholesome family man making an earnest transition from basketball to baseball.
It also helped Warner Bros. to figure out what to do with their Looney Tunes characters, which had largely laid dormant within the company’s intellectual property vaults. There had been a conscious effort to revitalised the company’s animation with shows like Tiny Toon Adventures and even Animaniacs, but those classic and beloved cartoons were a merchandising opportunity waiting to happen. So the logic of the original Space Jam was clear, it was an excuse to tie together two potentially profitable strands of intellectual property.
Space Jam itself was something of an afterthought. The movie struggles to reach its ninety-minute runtime. It often feels like the production team have to utilise every scrap of film to reach that target, with extended riffs focusing on Bill Murray and Michael Jordan on the golf course and with a lot of the improvisation from the voice cast included in the finished film. The movie’s ending comes out of nowhere, and Space Jam struggles to hit many of the basic plot beats of a scrappy sports movie.
The movie itself was immaterial to the success of Space Jam as a concept. After all, the film only grossed $250m at the global box office, enough to scrape into the end of year top ten behind The Nutty Professor and Jerry Maguire. However, the film’s real success lay in merchandising, with the film generating between $4bn and $6bn in licensing and merchandising. Key to this was the success of the six-time platinum-certified soundtrack which remains the ninth highest-grossing soundtrack of all-time.
In some to trace a lot of modern Hollywood back to the original Space Jam. So much of how companies package and release modern media feels like an extension of that approach, the reduction of the actual film itself to nothing more than “content” that exists as a larger pool of marketable material. After all, the unspoken assumption underlying AT&T’s disastrous decision to send all of their blockbusters to HBO Max was the understanding that HBO Max itself was often packaged free with company’s internet. Movies would no longer be their own things, but just perks to be packaged and sold as part of larger deals.
In the decades since the release of Space Jam, the industry has become increasingly focused on the idea of packaging and repackaging intellectual property. It has become increasingly common for films to showcase multiple intellectual properties housed at the same studios. Simple crossovers like Alien vs. Predators or The Avengers now seem positively humble when compared to the smorgasbord of brand synergy on display in projects like The Emoji Movie or Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Interestingly, as Disney have steadily securing their intellectual property portfolio with additions like Pixar and Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. have becoming increasingly bullish about showcasing the depth and breadth of their bench. The LEGO Movie imagines a wide range of properties consolidated under one brand. Ready Player One depicted a pop culture user space lost in nostalgia for properties and trinkets. However, those movies also managed to tell their own stories, even as they grappled with the weight of brand synergy pushing down on top of them.
Space Jam: A New Legacy has no such delusions. It understands that it does not exist as a story or as a feature film. Instead, it has distilled cinema down to a content-delivery mechanism. The plot of the movie finds basketball star LeBron James sucked into the “Serververse” and forced to ally with the Looney Tunes in order to play a basketball game with the fate of the world in the balance. However, while the original Space Jam ran a brisk and unfocused ninety minutes, A New Legacy extends itself to almost two hours. There is always more content to repackage and sell, after all.
A New Legacy slathers its cynicism in nostalgia, directly appealing to a generation of audiences who have convinced themselves that Space Jam was a good movie and a beloved childhood classic. A New Legacy is built around the understanding that the original Space Jam walked so that it might run, counting on the audience’s nostalgia for the original film to excuse a lot of its indulgences. After all, it would be a betrayal of the franchise if A New Legacy wasn’t a crash and vulgar cash-in. In many ways, A New Legacy does what most sequels aspire to do, scaling the original film’s ambitions aggressively upwards.
As with the original Space Jam, there is layer of irony to distract from the film’s clear purpose. In the original Space Jam, the villainous Swackhammer planned to abduct the Looney Tunes and force them to play at his themeparks. The implication was that the characters did not want to be sold into corporate servitude, stripped of their own identity and rendered as crass tools of unchecked capitalism. The irony of Space Jam lay in the fact that the entire movie was a variant on Swackhammer’s themepark and the Looney Tunes were dancing to that theme anyway as Daffy puckers up and kisses the Warner Bros. stamp on his own ass.
In A New Legacy, a sentient algorithm – Al G. Rhythm – is cast as the movie’s primary antagonist. The film gestures broadly at a satirical criticism of the modern film industry, with Al G. Rhythm shaping and warping the future of movie-making by suggesting things like computer-generating movie stars and producing a constant array of recycled intellectual property. A New Legacy recognises the machinations of Al G. Rhythm as unsettling and horrifying, with throwaway jokes about the theft of ideas and the violation of privacy, but the villain largely serves as a smokescreen to let the movie have its cake and eat it.
After all, A New Legacy revels in Al G. Rhythm’s plans. LeBron James is turned into an animated figure and dumped into classic Looney Tunes shorts like Rabbit Season and The Rabbit of Seville. The film understands that while the audience might be afraid of the algorithm, they also yearn for it. After all, it isn’t Al G. Rhythm who structures A New Legacy so that the film spends an extended sequence touring the company’s beloved intellectual properties.
A New Legacy is really just an investors’ day presentation that celebrates the sheer amount of content that Warner Bros. own. It’s not too difficult to imagine the film screened investors before the Discovery deal, as proof of just how many viable franchising opportunities existed within the copyright of the company itself. It’s a weird and unsettling showcase, in large part because it feels like that warning from Jurassic Park. The studio were so obsessed with whether they could do a thing that they never stopped to consider whether they should.
The film’s middle section includes a whirlwind tour of the properties owned by Warner Bros. After Bugs “plays the hits” with James, the two set off on an adventure to recover the other Looney Tunes from other beloved Warner Bros. properties. Some of these advertisements make sense: Daffy and Porky are living in the world of Superman: The Animated Series, while Lola seems to have found the Wonder Woman from the Bloodlines animated films. Others make much less sense in a movie aimed at kids, like the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote hiding in Mad Max: Fury Road or Yosemite Sam living in Casablanca.
Of course, it’s debatable how much of A New Legacy is aimed at kids, as compared to the kids of the nineties. Its target market seems to be kids in the late nineties who never grew up, because they never had to. Elmer Fudd and Sylvester are hiding out in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Granny and Speedy have taken refuge in the opening scenes of The Matrix. While the original Space Jam featured odd pop cultural shoutouts to things like Pulp Fiction, at least that was somewhat contemporaneous.
To be fair, there is no art driving these choices. Many of these references serve to point the audience towards established properties. It is a sentient recommendation algorithm for HBO Max and a handy way of stoking audience interest in upcoming projects like The Matrix 4 (December 2021) or Furiosa (June 2023). It is a helpful reminder that Superman: The Animated Series has been remastered in high definition to stream on HBO Max. Foghorn Leghorn even rides a dragon from Game of Thrones to remind viewers that the show is streaming on HBO Max and that there are prequels coming.
It’s all very bizarre, but also strangely lifeless. The climax of the film finds the inevitable basketball game played in front of a crowd of familiar pop culture icons drawn from a wide range of sources: King Kong, The Iron Giant, Batman ’66, The Wizard of Oz, The Mask and many more. It feels very much like a surreal power play, a company showcasing the depth of its own vaults at a turbulent time in the industry. It leads to weird moments, like Al G. Rhythm even quoting Training Day, perhaps the film’s most unlikely draw from the “Warner Bros. Intellectual Property Vault.”
The most revealing aspect of the movie is its central conflict, with Al G. Rhythm cynically manipulating LeBron’s son Dom. Dom is convinced that his father doesn’t understand him, that his father is unable to see that his skill lies in video game coding rather than old-fashioned basketball. Rhythm is able to create a schism between father and son, using Dom’s code and his anger to attack and undermine LeBron James and the Looney Tunes. It’s a very broad and very archetypal story. There are no points for realising that Dom eventually comes around to his father and accepts that Rhythm is a villain.
However, it signals an interesting shift in these sorts of narratives. Traditionally, these sorts of generational conflicts played out between fathers and sons, with fathers presented as antagonistic and sons presented as heroic. The original Star Wars saga is built around Luke Skywalker trying to wrestle and grapple with his father Darth Vader. In Superman II, the eponymous superhero is forced to confront Zod, a representative of his father’s generation and the old world. Even in Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne is set against his surrogate father figure Ra’s Al Ghul.
The metaphor driving these sorts of stories was fairly simple and straightforward. Every generation needs to come into their own and take control of their own agency within the world. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi ends with Darth Vader dead and Luke staring out into the wider universe. Times change, and each generation has an obligation to try to create a better world than the one left to them by their parents. In the conflict between parents and children, it has generally been children who have prevailed.
However, in recent years, the trend has swung back sharply. It’s notable that the villain in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is an errant child who doesn’t properly respect his parents, and that Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker ends with order restored when the protagonist takes the name of the beloved heroes of the older films. Shows like Star Trek: Picard are built around the idea that kids need their older generation of parents to swoop in and tell them how to properly live their lives.
A New Legacy is an interesting illustration of this trend. The movie ends with a reconciliation between LeBron and Dom, but it is very clearly on LeBron’s terms. Dom is manipulated and misled by sinister forces, and his father has to save him while realigning his moral compass. Father knows best. It demonstrates how the underlying logic of these stories has shifted in recent years, perhaps reflecting the understanding that perhaps the older generation won’t surrender the floor gracefully.
As with Ready Player One, there’s a monstrous Peter Pan quality to A New Legacy. It is a film about how the culture doesn’t have to change. It can be recycled and repurposed forever and ever and ever. At the end of Space Jam, Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny parted ways. There was an understanding that the two worlds existed apart from one another. However, A New Legacy ends with the collapse of these worlds into one another; the “Serververse” manifesting itself in the real world. As LeBron walks home, Bugs asks if he can move in.
Of course, with HBO Max subscription, the audience can take Bugs home anytime they want

Another one for you! What are your five "go to" GG episodes you find the most rewatchable? They Shoot Gilmores and The Lorelais' First Day at Yale are definitely both on my list, but I'm still trying to pick just three more from the zillion other episodes I love :)
Thank you for this. I really appreciate it💕 Right off the bat I’m going to apologies for how long this is. I couldn’t keep it to just five episodes and I had a need to explain why these are my most rewatchable episodes.
1) Forgiveness and Stuff (1x10) I’m such a sucker for Luke being there for his girls. The way he gives Taylor, the guy he’s thrown a frying pan at because he’s annoying and he hates him, the keys to his establishment just shows how much he cares and knew Lorelai needed him. It makes me happy. Plus it’s where we get the classic blue hat. Lorelai saying Luke always looks good and Luke saying “I can’t imagine anyone seeing you as a disappointment.” Such cute moments in this episode.
2) Dead Uncles & Vegetables (2x17) Just as I love Luke being there for his girls, I equally love when Lorelai and Rory are there for him. Luke and Lorelai are a cute married couple in this episode (and pretty much all episodes really) and you can’t convince me otherwise. Also, don’t we all just love the way Rory makes Jess help out. It’s so funny seeing him just let her and we all know he’s loving it.
3) A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving (3x09) If you don’t join in when everyone is chanting ‘Jackson,’ then you haven’t been watching this episode right. I love getting to watch the girls go through their Thanksgiving traditions, especially Lorelai and Luke’s. The Lane and Dave moments are cute! The girls eating with Luke and Jess is adorable and they all look like a cute happy family. I adore the fact that Lorelai takes food from Luke’s plate. I’m telling you these people have been married since day one. Plus it’s Jess and Rory’s first Thanksgiving together as a couple and ain’t that cute! I love drunk Sookie! She’s funny and I can’t help but say her lines with her.
4) A Tale of Poes and Fire (3x17) It’s super fun seeing Michel interacting with Miss Patty and Babette. Lorelai screaming ‘Stella’ for Luke to come to the window is always fun to watch. But the best part is Lorelai telling Luke about her dream and how they smile while discussing it. Lorelai not being about to tell Luke that they kissed in her dream because it hits too close to home brings out the feels. Oh and Rory’s going to Yale!
5) The Fundamental Things Apply (4x05) Luke and Lorelai’s first movie night. I love how Lorelai teases Luke about not having watched many movies and not knowing what the FBI warning is. It’s so fun to watch. I love how comfortable they both look while they sit and watch Casablanca. Luke helping Rory out with her awkward date is cute, and a little Dad moment which fuels my ‘Luke has always been a father figure to Rory’ feels. The best moment is when Luke is sleeping on their couch and Rory says, ‘He looks comfy there, doesn’t he?’ and Lorelai looks like she doesn’t want to think about how comfy Luke looks because she doesn’t want to admit how much she likes seeing him there. And I’m definitely reading way too into that look but it makes me happy so it counts. 
6) The Incredible Sinking Lorelais (4x14) The proud and happy smile on Lorelai’s face when she’s looking at the gum wrapper with the Dragonfly’s first reservation makes it worth watching this episode. She’s adorable and I’m so proud of her. Lorelai wearing her Bon Jovi hat and Luke commenting on it is fun. The best part about this episode has to be, as Lorelai puts it ‘the meltdown in the park’ moment. Lauren Graham is so good at emotional scenes (and pretty much everything this woman does) that it always hits me when Lorelai is breaking down. Of course I love the fact Luke instantly knows something is wrong when he sees her and he’s there to comfort and support her. 
7) Let Me Hear Your Balalaikas Ringing Out (6x8) Lorelai jonesing for her colours is super fun and cute. Colin and Finn are funny when they’re drunk. ‘I’ve forgotten how to get into a car,’ always cracks me up. Then he appears. The man of the hour. Yes, Jess Mariano. It’s nice to have Jess back for this episode. I alway forget how much I love his interactions with Rory until I watch them again. I’m super proud of all he’s done and seeing him come back, showing his book to Rory and telling her that he couldn’t have done it without her is such a beautiful moment. Probable one of my favorite between the two. And of course seeing Jess questioning Rory and being able to wake her up and make her realise that she’s not acting like herself is the best. All that said, the part which I just love is when Paul Anka gets sick and Lorelai is in Rory’s room watching him sleep. Once again Lauren is just incredible and makes my heart hurt at hearing Lorelai say she's a bad mother. Luke being there to comfort her is an added bonus, especially the way he touches her hair to comfort her. 
8) Santa’s Secret Stuff (7x11) I know what you’re thinking, how is a season 7 episode where Lorelai and Chris are still together on my most rewatchable list? Well let me tell you why. I love getting to hear about Lorelai and Rory’s Christmas traditions, such as how they put green and red M&M’s in their cereals on Christmas day (which I did last year and let me tell you it be yummy) and getting to see the girls go through those traditions is nice. Gigi isn’t my favorite character (honestly have no opinion on the kid) but she’s adorable when she copies Lorelai as she says ‘The redcoats are coming.’ The fact Lorelai doesn’t think twice about helping Luke with the character reference warms my heart to no end and is just super cute. Talking about cute, Luke and April! These cuties! Always love any Papa Luke moment. Luke being a Dad is so cute to watch and I love April (just hate what the writers did with her storyline in season 6 but that’s a rant for another day). Love that she’s 60% atheist and 40% agnostic. This girl is so quirky and I’m so here for it. What makes this episode one of my most rewatchable episodes is that scene between the girls and Luke and April when they’re all out shopping. This scene is amazing because it shows how much Luke cares for Rory. He’s always cared about her and throughout the years has always given her gifts for her birthday and holidays and maybe they weren’t the best gifts, but the love is what counts especially since Luke finds going out to buy presents such a daunting task. It just makes me happy seeing how much Rory means to him. What makes me love this scene is the smile and just the look on Lorelai’s face. If that look doesn’t show how much she loves and admires Luke then I clearly need new glass. (side note: I actually do need new glasses but that’s besides the point lol) 
9) I’d Rather Be In Philadelphia (7x13) This episode just really shows how great Luke is. The fact the moment he finds out about Richard being at the hospital he just had to go and see if everyone is okay, to see if Lorelai is okay is next level cute and just reminds me why Luke is always going to be the better man. Yes, he has issues and has dealt with somethings in ways that I just want to punch him so hard his hat starts spinning like Daffy Duck's beak, but he’s always there for his girls even when he’s not with Lorelai which just further shows how much he cares and is generally such a great guy. I love that Luke let’s Emily give him chores to do and that it kinda feels like he’s part of the family because he’s helping out, but then I remember he’s not and that hurts. I love that he comes back with food and a fish bag. He’s a cutie. Love that Lorelai is happy to see him. Logan is there for Rory which is nice to see. It’s interesting to see how everyone deals with Richard being in the hospital this time around compared to in Season 1, mostly Emily. All her moments especially when she has a little breakdown in front of Lorelai, and then her talk with Richard hurts to watch but in a really good way.
10) It’s Just Like Riding a Bike (7x19) Lorelai’s dress at the start of this episode is the only reason I rewatch this episode endlessly. Ah well that and some other things too, I guess but mostly the dress. When Lorelai calls Sookie, that whole scene I personally feel like it presents a parent having to deal with sick children so well. Sookie’s place being a mess, her sniffing what I’m hoping is milk from the kid’s bottle and using it for her coffee, and also picking a lollipop from the tablecloth is really how life looks like for a parent just in general, let alone when their kids are sick. So it’s refreshing seeing this being presented in a realistic way. Luke and Lorelai car shopping is awkward but I love every moment of it, especially when Luke starts ranting and then they starts bickering. The smile on Lorelai’s face. Lord take the wheel because my heart can’t deal with the cuteness. The smile screams ‘I have him back’ to me and I love how happy she is about that. Luke doing everything in his power to make Lorelai be able to have her old car is just sweet, and have I forgotten to mention that this guy is just the best? I love it. 
Okay, I’m finally done and the fact you’ve gotten to the end of this is amazing. It was hard to narrow it down to just these because there are a lot of episodes I love and rewatch often, like a bunch from season 4 and 5 but these just happen to be the ones I go to when wanting to rewatch an episode. It really only occured to me once I was done that I have no season 5 episodes on this list and more season 7 ones which I’m not even sure why that’s the case but it is. They Shoot Gilmores and The Lorelais' First Day at Yale is definitely episodes I watch often, especially because they both have cute moments: ‘Another kid might be nice’ and 'Rory says thanks for everything, too,’ are some. What, like Risky Business? - ANOTHER Nick Valensi x reader series pt 6
Picture it: year 2000, August 21, party at Albert Hammond Jr’s and Julian Casablancas’ apartment - more like a intimate get-together (A/N: im so fucking funny with these shitty references) with you, the guys, and a few other outside friends like the up-and-coming Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Having introduced Karen and Julian, you felt like your two worlds were colliding a little bit, happy that two NYC bands with two totally different sounds could still get along and even teach each other songs. Nick Zinner and Nick Valensi were sitting down playing Albert’s Fender Strat, each one of them learning a song from the other, Fab was talking to Brian Chase and Nikolai, Albert butting in every once in awhile - though he was talking more to Karen and Julian - and you? Well..you were just observing, smiling at your friends who were all getting along. It felt good to see the guys, who acted like a very exclusive gang, interact with another band that felt very much like an exclusive gang. When worlds collide, I guess.
“Okay, so with this song Karen’s been working on, I tuned the low E string down to C, and basically you play that throughout the song…for the most part,” Nick Zinner smiled, handing the Strat over to Nick after demonstrating a little bit. The brunette Nick - not the black haired Nick of Yeah Yeah Yeahs - picked it up almost immediately, almost perfectly. 
“Shit man, that’s like..really cool, I like it! Are you gonna play it at your next show or…?” 
“We’re thinking about it, but we wanna flesh it out a little more.” 
It seemed like Nick and Nick were really getting along, making your heart swell with happiness. Everyone else was getting along too, and, my god, you were so excited.

Pulling you aside about an hour and a half after the get together had pretty much ended, the Yeahs having to get out of there because they had a recording session early in the morning, Julian posed a question to you: “Okay, okay, what’s like..yknow, goin’ on between you and Nick. Cuz like…he’s losing his mind over you and Jack and won’t fuckin’ shut up about it. It’s kinda getting annoying. Like…I really think he’s into you, yknow? Like I dunno, just a thought, but like…now the real big money question here is, do you like him. Cuz, if you don’t you should just tell him, cuz he’s like..losing his fuckin’ marbles…yknow?” 
‘How many ‘yknow’s can this dude say in like…2 sentences?!’ You thought to yourself before beginning your response, “Look, Jules, I liked him, but like Jack and I are kinda seeing each other now. I don’t even know if Nick likes me like that and, to be honest, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not gonna stress out about it.” You shrugged. Taking the subway back home with Nick, you leaned on one of the poles that you were supposed to hold onto; having gotten so used to taking the train, the shaking of it barely phased you anymore. The two of you weren’t talking, but it seemed like you were just enjoying each other’s company. You two also smuggled a bottle of wine in a brown paper bag from Albert’s place, planning on continuing the party by yourselves. Nick looked at you, you looked at him. 
“If we kissed right now, would that be weird?” Nick asked, staring right at you. Blunt, but you were used to him being that way as that really was his personality. If he wanted to say something, he could and would say it. 
“What, like the movie Risky Business?” You laughed, slightly blowing off his proposal. 
“I mean like, I guess, so. I dunno, we don’t have to! Just a thought—“ Grabbing the collar of his jean jacket, you kissed him passionately. Nick jumped slightly, surprised that you, who was first joking about the kiss, decided to just go for it. His hands grabbed your waist and squeezed softly, slightly pulling your shirt up to expose some skin. It felt like it lasted forever, but the both of you wanted to make it last even longer than forever as you were totally caught up in the moment, no thoughts, no cares, just the two of you sharing something very personal. 
Only pulling away to breathe for a hot sec, the kiss lasted for minutes. It felt like love and neither of you could get enough of it. 
‘I’m…so damn in love with her!’ Nick exclaimed in his mind, realizing his true feelings in that moment. Upon having that thought, he pulled away quickly, stating a quick “sorry” and went back to where he was standing before across from you. ‘This is wrong..this is so wrong, I just fucking kissed her and she’s like…almost dating someone’
Feeling really rejected and upset, you bit your lip until it was raw and looked down at your battered converse. No one spoke for the rest of the ride, the walk, or the night.

Shanghai Noir

The 2020 pandemic not only had us buying and playing more board games, it also gave a big boost to Nathan’s board game designing hobby. Thanks to Tabletop Simulator (TTS), the processes of making the game components, playtesting, and rules-editing could all be done virtually without leaving home.
Nathan’s game Shanghai Noir takes place on August 12th, 1937 the night before the Japanese invasion of Shanghai - a politically-divided, gangster-ridden, cosmopolitan Chinese city run by money hungry European colonizers. Within this Casablanca-esque setting, players move “heroes” around the game board, picking up passports and travel documents so they can catch the last train, boat, and plane out of Shanghai before 6 rounds (6 hours) are up. But the best way to win points is to resolve “Drama” cards that involve changing relationships between heroes - making them friends, rivals, enemies or soulmates.
What’s interesting is that you do not play as the heroes. You are competing “Fates,” controlling the actions and connections of specific heroes on your turn, while another player may have very different plans for those same heroes on their turn.

We enjoyed books by Paul French, Lisa See, and any material we could find on the Shanghai Art Deco style which we love. We also watched Chinese and English-language movies set in that time period (“Shanghai”, “Shanghai Triad”,  “Empire of The Sun”, “Lust Caution”, “The White Countess”) plus lots of documentaries. There are authentic Shanghai pre-war films on YouTube which are aesthetically more interesting but also intensely bleak. It was hard to find stories that reflected the broad cosmopolitanism of this "Paris of The East”, but hopefully this game captures some of that mood with the characters and locations.

ILLUSTRATIONS: 
Lili illustrated all the heroes and villains in this development version of Shanghai Noir. They are  American, British, Chinese, French, Japanese, Jewish, Russian and Sikh, some of whom are based on real personalities of Old Shanghai. The locations (based on real places) will also be illustrated and added to the game board at some point. *The final published version of Shanghai Noir may be illustrated by a different artist.

PLAYTESTING:
Shanghai Noir is still undergoing playtesting, and the rules are still being tweaked. Nathan recently made a physical prototype for real life play tests, and the Tabletop Simulator and Tabletop Playground versions also get updated as rules change.

Welcome to the Space Jam. Its your chance to do your dance at the Space Jam. Alright? Alright. Both movies are about a Basketball Star Teaming up with the Looney Tunes to play Basketball. So let’s see which one is the better of the two, starting off with...

THE STORY
Original - Aliens have come to kidnap the Looney Tunes. So they decide to have their fate decided by a Basketball Game. But when the Aliens stole the talent of other NBA players, the Looney Tunes decide to kidnap Michael Jordan (yes, they kidnap Michael Jordan as pointed out by Teen Titans going to the old Space Jam Website). After Hijinks they win the game.
Sequel - Lebron’s son got kidnapped by Al G. Rhythm and to get him back he must beat Al in a Basketball game. Thing is he is forces to get a team and he was sent to the Looney Tunes world where he finds Bugs alone. The others are seeing other Warner Brother properties so Bugs and Lebron work together to get them back. Thing is Lebron wants some heavy hitters and despite his efforts he only got toons. Even worse, the basketball game is not straightforward, more people’s lives are on the line and Al got his son to play for his team. Only until Lebron learned that he shouldn’t push people to be like him do the toons come back and win the game.
Winner - Sequel. Calling the original a plot is giving it too much credit. Its more of a concept that is put together than an actual story. If New Legacy’s story is more complex, its only because it has actual progression as things change.

THE BASKETBALL STAR
Original - As a kid, Michael Jordan was destined for greatness. He knew he wanted to be a big time basketball star and as a promise to his dad will also become a baseball star. He retired and is trying his best, but he’s not a good baseball player. It doesn’t help that others are treating him as something special (because they all want some free shoes ~Starfire). So when the Looney Tunes kidnap him, he didn’t want to help until the Monstars messed with him. Now back in the game Michael plays like he never lost a step and help the Looney Tunes win.
Sequel - As a kid, Lebron wants to play basketball. But he’s also a kid so he enjoys having fun like playing a Gameboy Game complete with Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle. But because of that, he lost the game. His coach at the time said he could become a great basketball player if he focused. So he did and became King James. Now an adult, he wants his kids to be basketball players too, but his youngest son prefer to make video games. This causes a riff that allows AL G. Rhythm to manipulate his son to work with him. Lebron, forced into the Warner Serververse has to make a team and is stuck with the Looney Tunes. He thinks they could win if they stick with the fundamentals but between the new rules and bias ref, they’re losing badly. So badly an argument breaks out between him and the Toons during halftime. When he figures out he’s treating them like his son, he realized the only way to win is to let them be them. With that knowledge, he ask his son for forgiveness and earns it. After winning the game, he lets his son go to the E3 Game Camp instead of the Basketball Camp.
Winner - Sequel. Lebron has an actual connection with Looney Tunes as a kid, was excited to meet Bugs, has a character arc that takes place throughout the entire movie. Even if you think he’s a bad actor, he at least felt like he was invested in the story.

THE REFERENCES
Original - For Background Easter Eggs, you got a few Looney Tunes Alumni, though they do repeat. Cameos feature other Basketball Stars and Bill Murray. And references are to things of the 90s: Dennis Rodman, Pulp Fiction, Beethoven and Babe, and for some reason Disney. I think the most clever is Larry Bird appearing. In one of the few sports things I know, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan were rivals. How do I know this? I played an NES game about their rivalry.
Sequel - Background and References subtle and not were all about Warner owned properties. As old as Casablanca to as new as Rick and Morty. We got to see the DCAU once more, references to old Looney Tunes gags and places, MC Hammer, Hanna-Barbera, Mad Max: Fury Road (and one I think is a Nostalgia Critic Reference) and so much more. In fact here’s a video featuring them all. Favorite of mine, Michael Jordan’s Cameo.
Winner - This is all your own preference so feel free to pick who you think wins here.

THE SOUNDTRACK
Winner - No competition. Between the title song (turned meme), the inspirational song (sang by someone who doesn’t know how to use a toilet), and the Monstars Anthem the new one can’t compete. But I will say for those thinking that Porky Rapping is “cringe”, the original also had a certain Rabbit rapping.

THE VILLAINS
Original - The Big Bad is Mr. Swackhammer, owner of Moron Mountain and voiced by Danny DeVito. Sadly he doesn’t do much but be the big bad boss of Nerdlucks. As their tiny small self, they don’t leave much of an impression but they really stand out after stealing the talent of stars and become Monstars. They become big, mean and slightly more different. 
Sequel - Al G. Rhythm is an algorithm the Warner Brothers studios use to help make movie ideas. He wants some recognition and thinks if he can get Lebron on board he can earn it. Sadly, when Lebron refused, he didn’t take it well. So when he saw Lebron’s son take interest in him and ran away from Lebron, Al used that to his advantage. With that, he makes Lebron force to play a basketball game while manipulating his son to not only allow him access to his data but get him to play as well. The Goon Squads are a result of that as its Lebron’s son’s data on other basketball players mixed with superpowers.
Winner - Give Don Cheadle a Disney+ Show Disney! As great as Danny DeVito is, he’s just not in it long enough like Al. Can be manipulative yet also very agro.

THE TOONS
This category will be done differently. I’ll be focusing on their takes on Bugs, Lola, and the Rest. I am not including Daffy in this equation because he’s perfect in both.
Bugs - In the original, Bugs is Bugs. Wisecracking, carrot chewing, master manipulator as always. In the Sequel, he’s one of the few that stood in Looney Tunes world because that’s where he could be him. But the loneliness made him miss everyone (after all, how can he pull off schemes and pranks without victims). And while in the original Bugs saves Lola from being squashed, Bugs risks his life to ensure Lebron doesn’t get deleted when executing the glitch. It makes Bugs’ actions seem more noble than just saving the girl he likes. 
Lola - In the original, she’s a “sexy” no nonsense girl who plays basketball, and that’s it. And despite her attitude, became a damsel in distress and Bugs’ prize for rescuing her. in the sequel, she wants to do her own thing, even doing an Amazon Trial to become one, but failed to complete it when Lebron and Bugs was in danger and finding out Lebron’s son was in the line. So she’s there to give the team another good player and also be a moral support. In fact, its thanks to her that Lebron realizes what he’s been doing to his son.
The Rest - If the original got one thing over the Sequel, its number. A lot more Looney Tunes play in their game in comparison. With the exception of Granny who was a cheerleader, every toon was in the game at one point. I can’t say the same for the Sequel. With that said, the Sequel did get to show their personalities more. Like compare Wile E. in both. In one he gives the Monstars a bomb. The other has him using an Acme device, placing bird seed on the button to get the Roadrunner to press it repeatedly, only to have himself be caught in said machine. They all got the chance to do their thing instead of sharing a spit take.

THE BIG GAME
Original - The Looney Tunes are losing badly in the first half. Why? Because they didn’t go looney for... Reasons. After being tricked into drinking Michael’s “Special Drink”, then they decide to go looney. This allows them to catch up but then the Monstars decide to take them out, which they do despite these attacks being pretty tame to what they can normally take. With a few seconds to go, Michael scores one more basket to win.
Sequel -  The Looney Tunes are losing badly in the first half. Why? Because Lebron is forcing them to play normal basketball despite their opponents and the game itself is anything but normal basketball. When they came back, they came back Looney and managed to catch up and even get ahead. But then Al decides to cheat since he controls the game. Thanks to this being the kid’s game, they know that if they perform a glitch they can take control away from Al long enough to score one more point and win. And thanks to Bugs’ sacrifice and his son moving a power up right underneath him, Lebron slam dunks the final point and wins.
Winner - The sequel. There was no reason for the Looney Tunes to be less looney in the first half in the original and its short live as each one gets taken out. Meanwhile the Sequel gives a valid reason for everything to happen.

My Winner - Space Jam: A New Legacy
Both movies are basically overgrown commercials trying to get you to buy stuff. The original was based off a Shoe Commercial and banking on your nostalgia on Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan the Basketball player to make you interested in seeing him back on court and new Looney Tunes content. The new one is basically for HBO Max. And both movies have also not credited people who deserve to be credited. But between the two of them a New Legacy actually feels like its trying to justify its existence. 
Lebron has a connection with the toons through childhood, has actual stakes in the game, and actually feels invested in the events. The original was basically the Nike commercial stretched to a movie length. And to me, that makes a New Legacy a better movie.

in no particular order, but the first one has obviously been on my mind!
1. Robbie Williams versus “britpop”. literally every beef he has had with a britpop boy is golden.
robbie’s and oasis’s 20+??? year beef at this point is the stuff of legends and I can’t get into all of it but like? it’s got everything! drunk dancing at glastonbury, iconic kissing pictures, their former friendship possibly playing a role in the take that breakup, the whole feud starting just because noel decided to open his mouth and call robbie “the fat dancer from take that”, stolen fiancés and the dissolution of a marriage, multiple songs that could be about the whole thing, a funeral wreath with “To Noel Gallagher, RIP. Heard your latest album – with deepest sympathy, Robbie Williams” (the drama of that one!) sent to oasis after the release of standing on the shoulder of giants, general on-going fatshaming and a little sprinkle of homophobia from the oasis camp (the “this ones for robbie, as usual, understands the letter q” at the 2000 q awards being the most notable), boxing match challenges as brit awards speeches, a very funny statement released by oasis about not “condoning violence” (lmao) after this that I can’t find right now, some of noel gallagher’s cruelest insults (this one cutting robbie and my mentally ill ass real deep) for some reason (one involving a gun and uhhh yeah), robbie putting the whole thing down to just wanting to fuck liam, and mentions of a theoretical throple involving himself kylie minogue and liam gallagher, and so much more that I can’t even recall off the top of my head. although there has been some minor reconciliation???? perhaps? also that time liam referred to robbie as a “whore carol singer” and robbie responded is...a moment

also I just love him basically giving no opinion of blur besides the fact they were all middle class assholes to him, PARTICULARLY alex james, the cheese tory bass player.
you can even make the argument that the success of robbie and pop acts like him is what killed britpop or atleast put the final nail in the coffin which makes all of this even more iconic!
honorable mention related to robbie because the humor is more about how fans reacted than the drama itself: that time in 2018 on X Factor that Robbie Williams said Louis Tomlinson didn’t know what camp wasand made some joke about camp not existing in Doncaster (where louis is from) because he was mean about dance club queen janice robinson’s performance, and directioners (well larries) started calling robbie “homophobic” because he was mean? to louis? a straight man? and classist because gay people do live in Doncaster, even though Robbie himself is also from a working class background and place? It was a lot. (there are posts about this I swear, just look in the robbie tag on this site but I don’t feel like finding them so take my word for it).
2. I can’t get enough of literally anything involving Chrissie Hynde and Ray Davies and their drama whirlpool of a relationship. like the fact they had their house senanced because they thought it was ghosts giving their relationship it’s bad vibes? his brother Dave hating her ON SIGHT for some reason, like its all too much for me and also all so nebulous. love it!
3. This one is so esoteric it’s barely drama or a beef but god I love this Courtney Love quote about Julian Casablancas’ little rich “my dad owned one of the biggest modeling firms in the world am I went to boarding school” ass

4. this one is not remotely niche or esoteric but literally every bit of drama that occurred between Tiffany Pollard and Gemma Collins on celebrity big brother....like this is the blueprint for funny reality show drama. I just feel Iike I can’t make a drama list without mentioning it. It’s just required viewing.
5. if you wanna get REAL niche, all the drama that occurred on The Glee Project (specifically season 1) that only me, my friends and like five other people have ever watched. Lindsay versus Ellis?? When Cameron walked? (literally all of this is niche enough that I can only find fan videos and no real clips, and the only reason my friends and I are able to still watch it is because one of them tormented it in like 2012) it’s all burned into my brain!!
