Lonely Nights
Sayo can’t seem to sleep tonight. What shall he do?
original publish date. 2 july 2021
Notes. third-person point-of-view, fluff, Sayo Samonji, Shishiou
~400 words
Poor Sayo lied in his stuffy futon alone. The poor boy hadn’t yet met his “brothers” as his current master called them. The saniwa he called master had yet to forge them in the smithy or find them on missions, and so tonight, Sayo lied in his futon in the large tatami mat room on a warm summer night.
Being in the darkness was normal to Sayo and being alone was even more so familiar to him. He wasn’t sure why on this night, he felt the need to shake off his covers and travel out on the veranda.
The night of the new moon made the outside halls feel even darker than usual. It didn’t matter though; Sayo knew the steps he had to take. He walked down the hall, surrounded by the chirps of the cicadas and the steps he took on the wood.
Once reaching the end of the hall, he turned left and quietly opened the sliding door of the familiar yet odd western style room placed in this home. He walked in and closed the door behind, as quietly as he did on his missions, he thought. He went towards the one and only bed in the entire citadel, and with his eyes already adjusted, Sayo studied Shishiou’s form in his bed.
Shishiou was the only one of his “family,” the saniwa had told Sayo, and like Sayo, Shishiou would sleep alone at night. More importantly, to Sayo, Shishiou had been Sayo’s “big brother” in this new form and household. While other families like the Awataguchi and Sanjo already had each other, Sayo still had to wait and wait and wait to become a “family” for the saniwa, and so, Shishiou who had no one else, took care of Sayo.
Shishiou faced towards the wall, curled away from where Sayo stood. It would be a little hard to do, but Sayo had done it before.
Sayo walked to the end of the bed and quietly crawled in. He crawled slowly and as softly as he could, so he wouldn’t wake up poor Shishiou. Little Sayo crawled in between Shishiou’s arms, and despite it being a warm summer night, Sayo fell into a deep sleep, feeling safe with his other “big brother.”

When he reached for Yamanbagiri, Mikazuki’s hands were deftly caught before he could even begin to set about his purpose.
“How can you even see it with that hood covering your eyes?” he asked, not resisting Yamanbagiri’s grip, letting his hands be held.
“Didn’t I tell you?” Yamanbagiri said in a low, almost threatening tone. “You removed this once before, you will not remove it again.”
The intensity of his voice set Mikazuki off in shivers, but he just sighed and shrugged as if unaffected. He moved to withdraw his hands, but found Yamanbagiri’s grip on him tighten until it would take more effort than he wished to exert to free himself.
With the moon above them, Yamanbagiri’s eyes were totally obscured in the shadow of his hood, even as he adjusted to see better in the dark, but Mikazuki could feel the intensity in his gaze as he shifted his grip to hold both Mikazuki’s wrists with one hand. With the other, he deftly unfastened his cloak.
They sat in stillness for several moments, and then, with a low, measured exhale, Yamanbagiri pushed his hood back, causing the cloak to fall from him completely.
His grip on Mikazuki’s wrists loosened, and then disappeared. As he lowered his hands to his lap, he kept his gaze lowered with them.
The magnitude of his actions stole Mikazuki’s breath away. He took a moment of silence himself to decide what to do with the gift Yamanbagiri had just given him.
With great care, he reached out to brush back some messy strands of hair that were falling over Yamanbagiri’s eyes, and then rested his palm lightly against his cheek.
Yamanbagiri inhaled, breath catching, before exhaling shakily and leaning into the cradle of his hand, eyes shut but head no longer down.
The tacit acceptance of his gaze set Mikazuki’s heart thundering in his chest.
“Beautiful,” he whispered.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
I want more of this fic but it’s my own wip so I have to write it myself. I really hate past me for not finishing this one at the time.

Since I love to talk about myself, let’s talk about me and my fics on this most hallowed of holidays
The relationship I most like to write about is not Tsurumaru and Mikazuki, because most of the shit I put them through is situational rather than interpersonal. I actually like writing about Higekiri and Hizamaru the most because there is so much unresolved trauma there and their dynamic is rather unstable once you really think about it.
Hizamaru is a warrior in his own right but he has this weird deference to Higekiri, and Higekiri acts like he doesn’t give a shit but he very, very much does. They’re both just so deeply emotionally repressed and I love bringing that to the surface like the bitch I am :)
The relationship I don’t like to write about but have would be Horikawa and Izuminokami. I just don’t particularly like either of them on their own, but the concept was compelling to me so I went with it.
The character I’ve most enjoyed developing is Uguisumaru. He goes from being very meek and quiet and passive to being witty and bold as he becomes more comfortable with everyone. I also love how he and Tsurumaru went from being acquaintances to being real friends because they showed up for each other when they needed it the most.
The character I’d like to explore more is Omokage. I envision doing MANY more stories about him and how he comes into his own.
The story I most enjoyed writing was “Joya no Kane” because I really enjoyed fucking around with different narrative styles and different types of writing. Before I started writing fic regularly, I did a lot of other types of writing: grant submissions, business/promo writing, academic writing (liberal arts and the hard sciences), nonfiction articles, poetry, and probably more I can’t think of right now. I’ve had a pretty varied experience as a writer, so I liked pulling all of those together to tell a coherent story.
The story whose reception surprised me was “Thalassophobia.” I didn’t expect so many people to like it, but it has my second-highest hits and my highest hits to kudos rate. It might have been because it’s a part of Horikawa’s backstory that not a lot of fics seem to touch on.
The story I’ve written that I dislike the most is “The Ghost Journals.” I felt it was rushed and incomplete, and I didn’t go far enough with it. I don’t feel like going back and revising it but I’m not particularly proud of it.
The story I’m proudest of is “Joya no Kane” obvi. I use it as a touchpoint for pretty much all the fics that come after it even though everyone was retconned at the end because it revealed a lot of my personal headcanons about Touken Ranbu.
The scene I think about the most is the lion dream in “Beyond Mortal Sight,” which I’ve mentioned a million times before lmao. I just REALLY like the imagery of Hizamaru being held down by a lion and stretching his neck out to let Higekiri kill him: it’s intimate and powerful, and it encapsulates the push and pull of their relationship. Hizamaru would sacrifice himself a thousand times over for Higekiri because he is bonded to him for life, and he would actually be honored to be killed by his partner. Very twisted psychology.
My second favorite scene is Tsurumaru curled up around Mikazuki on the veranda in “The Blood of a Cherry Blossom,” because I can just picture it so well in my head and it always breaks my heart.
The scene I cringed at most while writing was Uguisumaru covered in sores in “A Mended Treasure.” I tried really hard not to get too graphic with it but it’s just really gross anyway lmao. I also cringed when writing about Nikkari’s eye exploding in “The Red Ring of Fate.”
The scene I laughed at while writing was Tsurumaru getting courted by a crane in “Five Strange Days in Tokyo.” Poor Tsuru lmao
The theme that comes up most in my writing is emotional repression and unresolved trauma. All the swords have very tragic pasts that they haven’t confronted, but eventually all of us have to face our demons in order to uncover our hidden strengths.
The trope that comes up most in my writing is dream sequences and prophetic dreams. I love writing about weird locations based on the psychology of the character or their moods, and I really like symbolism.

Fandom: Touken Ranbu
Characters: Horikawa Kunihiro and Izuminokami Kanesada
Pairing: KaneHori
Word Count: 1.8K
Summary: After waking in the middle of the night for no apparent reason, Horikawa finds himself dwelling on thoughts he'd rather not have ever occured to him. But beforenhe can get lost in the dark ocean that is his mind, his partner is there to remind him how to breathe.
Commentary: My submission for the 2023 Touken Ranbu Secret Santa. And an example of my lamentable time management skills. Though, in my defence, this is the fourth fic I wrote and one of only two that wasn't rage yeeted into the void (the other surviving one is undergoing massive rewrites to be a multichaptered fic). Yes it drops off at the end, but I'm surviving off 5hrs sleep, countless cups of tea and a washing machine that is determined to kill me with stress, so... *vague gestures*

Your page made me remember touken ranbu stuff. Do you have a si with mikazuki or is he just a fave? Love some jiji headcannons
-@dragon-anon
NOBODY MOVEEE I LOVE THIS QUESTION
I actually never got around to properly coming up with a saniwa self-insert yet (even though it's been over a year //slapped) but yes, Mikazuki is my favourite!! I have several faves from Touken Ranbu! While jiji is my ultimate fave (it's the CV Toriumi Kousuke that got to me... </3), I'm also very fond of Taroutachi, Kogi (I have a nendoroid of him!!), Hasebe and my sweet child Imanotsurugi!
(More under the cut, this got long LOL)
I was pretty bummed when TKRB EN shut down, I had a ranbu lv 2 jiji and a ranbu lv 7 Kanesan so :* a year's worth of gameplay down the drain for nothing;; but other than that, my favourite types are the ootachi and tantou, not just for meta but because I think swords in general are awesome NFDSNJDFSHJFS
like regardless of whether it's a greatsword or a dagger, it's still simultaneously lethal and beautiful in its own way. Nerd moment aside, I really love the TKRB character design, so there really isn't a sword I don't like! (except Kanesan, a CV Kimura Ryohei is always a threat /j)
I haven't really considered writing for Touken Ranbu actually, I worry it might be too niche :( but if there's some demand for it I'd be happy to! Considering the franchise's 'lore' is mostly JP history, I think we'd have quite a lot of freedom for fanfics so i might give it a go one day!
edit: just realised I never answered the first question properly, sorry love 😭🩷 but yeah I haven't really come up with any selfship stuff for him yet so hes just...waiting...

for the fanfic trope ask meme, soulmates au, outsider pov, friends to lovers, and there was only one bed?
the fanfic ask meme
okay round 2 for some more common fic tropes, huh? i mean, there's a lot of them floating around, so keep them coming if you wanna hear me ramble about tropes for a bit.
soulmates au
hmm... i really don't know how to feel about this one. i've always seen soulmates prompts out there and i have like... one wip regarding soulmates, but i really don't consider this one very much in the grand scheme of trope writing. it's never really crossed my mind as a trope to write, personally. it’s so hard to justify it in a doyalist sense, so it’s not my preferred kind of prompt
i'll rate this one d tier. i really wouldn't pick this over literally anything else, but i've read one (1) good tkrb izumutsu soulmates au. it's not impossible to write a good one, but there are a lot of systemic problems baked into the foundation i don't want to deal with.
outsider pov
anon let me be frank: i had to look up what this one meant since i don't really interact with this trope/style of writing. one would assume it's exactly what it says on the tin, but hey, you never know.
i'll rate this one c tier. since i don't really interact with it very much, i don't have an opinion on it. i'm sure a good writer would be able to write it well, but since the fics i tend to read is in a third person limited point of view, it's not really something i tend to read.
friends to lovers
good ole friends to lovers, a classic, a staple of love triangles and other contrivances for character a to get with character b. i don’t hate them! i actually kinda like them since it’s sort of... grounded? i always liked the grounded approach imo, since it’s easy to read.
i’ll rate this one b tier. a lot of the stuff i tend to write romantically tends to be in the ballpark of “friends + romantic relationship”, not necessitating “one os better than the other“. i have characters who are queerplatonic partners, friends with benefits, just friends, and friends and romantic partners. just make sure that it’s not “oh friends always end up in romantic relationships!“ and i’m all good.
there was only one bed
another staple of contrivances, i see! this one is fun since it can end in finally confessing or just a build up of more unresolved tension. it’s even more fun if neither character can spit it out but then end up in this situation regardless of how they feel.
i’ll rate this one b tier. i like it, but it requires some set up/emotional investment, but when it’s done well, i’m all over that shit.=.

Haven't posted here in a while but I have an epic idea I thought of the other day!!
I've been playing around with the idea of other charas becoming insert charas.
So what if, Ykm becomes the Saniwa. (If I ever turned this into a fanfic, my self insert oc (Yuu) would probs just be like, 'oh I can't go back to the citadel since I'm taking care of ya'll so I'm sending Ykm to my citadel' or something)
Maybe Yuu felt as though he had spent enough time with the sword bois but not enough with the authors and poets. However, he needed someone to watch over the sword bois. He was gonna just send the cat over but the government wanted someone that wasn't the cat keeping an eye on the sword bois so Yuu asked for volunteers and Ykm volunteered as soon as he heared that someone in the citadel seems to have a thing for ghost stories. (Obvs the Cheif Librarian, Aka, and Ao have jobs so they can't yeet themselves over to the citadel and I don't know what Faust does for a living sooooo)
(Relationship info under the cut)
So these could be the potential chara relationships for Ykm and the sword bois
Nikkari - Nikkari and Ykm would get together very well. Like, they both seem to have a thing for ghost stories and supernatural stuff. Ykm would definitely be interested in Nikkari himself too since the story with the ghost lady and the lanterns would be very interesting for Ykm. They would probs host ghost story nights or something.
Nankaitarou - Assuming that the previous Saniwa (Yuu) has a book shelf in his room and Ykm inherited it from him, Ykm would have a bunch of books in his room. And Nankaitarou seems like the book worm type so I imagine he would sneak in to read the books. And Nankaitarou might help Ykm get better at his Japanese skills.
Hasebe - I bet Hasebe would absolutely hate Ykm. Ykm is a very eccentric chara and is always very curious about things. He's the type that would probs try to join sword bois on their missions because he feels like it or something. And Hasebe would probably scold him a lot.
Mutsu - Since Ykm has gone all around the world, Mutsu would want to ask him a lot of questions. They might spend an afternoon or something talking about all the places Ykm went to in such and in exchange, Mutsu might tell Ykm in depth about Ryouma's adventures and such. Mutsu might pester Ykm to open up a bit about his disastrous childhood or maybe Ykm might get a bit closeted and protective of those times and refuse to tell Mutsu about all of that stuff. Who knows. Also Mutsu would definitely be absolutely obsessed with that fact that Ykm has a foreign sounding name and maybe might go around calling him H*arn-sensei instead of calling him Ykm hehe...
Awataguchi Tantous - Ykm would definitely allow the Awataguchi Tantous to hear his ghost stories. He might scare them but they would all definitly enjoy story time. Yagen might drag everyone off to bed if it gets too late. The tantous, since they are immature children, would probs be very curious about Ykm's accent and also might want Ykm to tell them about his adventures in the US.
Hizen - He would also kind of hate Ykm. One, Ykm is a very cheerful person and he's also a bit airheaded. And two, he would spend a lot of time with Mutsu and Hizen would not like that. Hizen would probs drag Mutsu off and be like, 'stay away from him!' Or something.
Ichigo - Although glad that the tantous enjoy listening to Ykm's stories, Ichigo would be very concerned once they start scaring Ichigo with ghost stories. Ichigo might also get a bit curious about Ykm and go and test him to see if Ykm is really as amazing as his little brothers bring him up to be.
Mikazuki - Ykm and Mikazuki would definitely have tea time. They might have their own tea time or join the rest of the tea gang or something. Mikazuki would be interested about why Yuu decided to leave and shove Ykm in as the saniwa. He might also be curious about Ykm himself. I can imagine Mikazuki and Ykm talking and random stuff as they sit outside together or something.
Bonus - The cat gets forced to go with Ykm and gets bullied by Konnosuke and Gokotai's tigers. Maybe he might try to eat Kamekichi and Urashima would go and yell at the cat. The cat would absolutely hate having to be near Nakigitsune's fox but likes Hakusan's fox because the fox is quiet. Usually he spends his time on top of the book shelf in order to not get attacked by the different animals living in the citadel.

Lazy Mornings
Shishiou wakes up not alone in bed.
Ao3 Link
In the morning, the Dategumi woke up without the presence of Ookurikara, though they did not think much of it. They assumed that he had woken up before them and started his duties or spent his freetime elsewhere.
In reality, Ookurikara had crawled into Shishou's room, one of the only rooms with a bed rather than tatami mats and a futon, and slept behind Shishiou, draping his arm around Shishiou's waist to keep the warmth between them throughout the night.
Shishiou woke up with as much alarm as a sleepy person could. A small Sayo had come in the night— before Ookurikara— and crawled between Shishiou's arms. Shishou saw this as normal, though the presence he felt behind him not normal.
He lifted his head as high as he could, to not wake up the others in his bed, and when seeing Ookurikara, let his head lay back down, the golden locks of his hair falling over his face.

New Fic: Like What You See?
Fandom: Touken Ranbu Pairing: Kikkou Sadamune/Yamanbagiri Chougi Rating: Mature Word Count: 1.4k
Summary:  Kikkou and Chougi wait for repairs...impatiently.
AO3 Link
Exceprt:
At the end of the hallway, Yamanbagiri caught another flash of white cloth out of the corner of his eye. If he strained, he could hear the soft sound of footsteps moving away again.
“If he comes to check on me one more time I’m going to—“
“Do absolutely nothing,” Kikkou interrupted. “He’s stronger than you. Do you really want everyone to watch you start another fight you can’t win? Wasn’t once enough?”
Yamanbagiri gripped his mantle tighter as his hand ached for the hilt of his sword.
“I’m stronger than when I first arrived here,” he said through a tight jaw. Not strong enough to beat the fake, he knew that, he knew that right down to the pit of his stomach where the fact of it made him feel ill.
“You still can’t beat him,” Kikkou said easily, as if he didn’t know how each word was like another wound.
“Shut up!” Yamanbagiri snapped.
Kikkou laughed, his usual low chuckle. Yamanbagiri had grown to like the sound in recent months, but having it turned against him still rankled.
“Stop baiting me and fix your collar,” he muttered, tugging his mantle more tightly around himself to cover his own exposed chest and fixing his gaze on his scuffed shoes.
“Oh, but you’re much more fun, Yamanbagiri Chougi-kun,” Kikkou purred, finally taking a seat beside him.
Without hesitation, he leaned close and tugged at the edge of Yamanbagiri’s mantle to peek underneath.
“A nasty cut, but then, you do look good in red,” he murmured as he slipped his hand under the mantle and the torn-open shirt to brush his fingertips down Yamanbagiri’s sternum.
Yamanbagiri steadied himself through the rush of heat to his cheeks and resisted the urge to slap Kikkou’s hand away. He knew it was the response he was looking for, and he refused to give it to him.
“You’ll never tie me up in your red ropes,” he muttered, not for the first time.
Kikkou hummed as his fingertips danced to the side. “Seeing your hands curled around them is rewarding enough, I suppose.”
His words were another blatant attempt to bait him, but it was harder for Yamanbagiri to resist when Kikkou’s wandering fingers expertly found his nipple and teased it to a peak.
The wounds from the fight still ached and stung, his body was still heavy with exhaustion, but the beginnings of arousal joined the mix anyway.
Almost without conscious thought, Yamanbagiri released the grip he had on his mantle and grabbed the exposed rope, working his fingers under it and yanking until Kikkou’s face was so close their noses touched.
“Hmm, just like that,” Kikkou purred, never ceasing the maddening touch of his fingers beneath Yamanbagiri’s shirt.
Yamanbagiri took a moment to accept how deeply he desired to kiss him, to have his hands wander lower, and then he steeled himself.
“Get your hand off me before I break your wrist,” he whispered.
Kikkou moaned softly. “So cruel to me.”

Whispered Words - Kurikasen
Fandom: Touken Ranbu Pairing: Kasen Kanesada/Ookurikara Rating: Teen and Up Word Count: 1,882 Summary: After a terrible mission, and a night spent trying to forget, Kasen wakes to the memory of a confession and a disappointingly empty bed.
Tags: Established Relationship, Love Confessions, Morning After, Implied Sexual Content, Fluff and Angst, Misunderstandings, Cuddling and Snuggling, Idiots in Love
Beta’d by EverythingandAnything/exhaustedseeker
Read on AO3, excerpt below
When Kasen woke, he frowned and tried to follow the hazy trail back into sleep. There was a pleasant ache waking over his body, and he’d much rather burrow back down and enjoy the quiet and calm for as long as he could before venturing out.
Then his sense of smell returned and he wrinkled his nose against the obvious and heady musk of sex lingering in the room. That explained the pleasant ache, he thought, as he shifted a little and blinked his eyes open.
The first thing that swam into view was the small table still laid out with a teapot and cups. The night before came creeping back into his mind, first the insidious chill of a mission that had gone terribly, and then a blossoming warmth that brought with it the fragrant scent of tea and the touch of Ookurikara’s warm hands.
Kasen couldn’t help but smile to himself, pressing his face deeper into the pillow as he brought his knees closer to his chest.
Ookurikara continued to surprise him with his thoughtfulness and kindness, battering down his defences until he was helpless to stem the flood of warm feelings for him.

things baxter ward makes me do:
1. write fanfic
2. draw fanart
3. thinking scenarios with/abt him that sometimes hinder me from sleep
4. back listen to one direction. (tbf it's only one (1) song. I've "summer love" stuck in my head for days because of baxter and compelled me to actually listen a few times). and the current number 2 I'm working on is related to this aksjdj
for real tho it's been a while since a single character inspired me much to think of contents and actually creating them. I'm a very lazy content creator.
there's only been 3 other characters that have done this lol (ranmaru from utapri, diavolo from obeyme, hasebe fron tkrb)
