Control (Elinor x Fem!Reader)
part 3 of the “The maiden and the bear” series (part 1)
___________________________
She felt it long before she even opened her eyes, before she felt the sun hitting her face, before she left her room and faced a new day. She knew it before she heard your voice.
She was familiar enough with the fire that gnawed at her insides, with the roar trapped in her chest, with the beast that lived within her to know it. It needed you, it always did.
Elinor felt terribly guilty for dragging you into all this trouble, for having offered your father the favor of the crown in exchange for your presence. She hadn't done it with bad intentions, of course, she had only been carried away by the fascination you aroused in her, but that didn't change things.
It didn't change that she knew you were in danger here. Because as long as she was alive, the bear would always be hunting you, insatiable in its need for you. She felt it every day and every hour, the force with which the beast fought for control, and she was terrified of what would happen if she stopped fighting.
She had only lost twice. The first time was when she had hurt Merida, which had left her scarred with guilt and fear. The second was after killing Mor'du and protecting her daughter. She had been so tired that she finally let the bear in her take control, losing herself in her own mind until her daughter's love brought her back.
But that had been different. So you hadn't been a deciding factor in her battle. If she was honest, she had no idea when it had started, she only knew that at some point you had become the only thing she agreed with the bear and therefore the only weapon she really had against it.
However, it didn't take long for her to realize that it was not a solution at all, but another problem. Because the price was too high, and she wasn't willing to pay it.
The bear wanted you, needed you, but she couldn't give it free rein. She feared what it might do to you if she did because deep down she knew that the beast wouldn't mind destroying the world, that it would be willing to do anything to have you.
That was something Elinor couldn't allow. So she, in her own way, made a deal with it. She would let it take a bit of control at night, she would let it call you and have you, as long as it promised not to hurt you too much, not to break you. And always inside her rooms.
It wasn't something that satisfied either of them, but it was all she had to offer. She always felt terribly guilty when she heard your timid knock on her door and the partial darkness enveloped her to make way for the bear though.
She only hoped that one day you could forgive her.

Your legs went weak and your hands shook as Maudie nervously whispered to you that the princess required your assistance in the royal chambers. That was bad news for you.
Princess Merida was usually funny and kind to you, always telling you about all her adventures as if you were her childhood friend and even challenging you to archery contests (you had managed to win twice, but you suspected that she had had mercy on you).
But from time to time, the princess would call on you for much more sensitive matters. Things had changed a lot since the bear incident, but that didn't mean you didn't have to walk around carefully.
You would never dare to complain about the great honor the crown had done your clan in exchange for your stay in the castle, but things had happened that often made you want to return to your land. And all of them had to do with the queen.
Queen Elinor was a wise and caring monarch who always put the good of her family and her kingdom above her own. People admired, respected, and loved her for it. She was an opposing force that perfectly balanced her husband's rudeness. Where King Fergus protected, the queen led. They were a wonderful team.
That's why you didn't understand why, when it came to you, the queen could be a little...selfish.
She had been fascinated with you from the first moment she had seen you. It was she who chose you as a maiden, who made you her favorite, and although you should feel flattered and grateful, the truth was that you felt more and more like a trophy, the favorite toy, not of the queen, but of the bear.
And it is that, although the spell had been broken a long time ago, the queen's eyes turned dark and the force with which she took and marked you was too much for a simple human.
So if the princess was calling you to the royal chambers, it was probably because the bear was on the loose. It was always about the bear with you.
"I-I'm busy" you tried to excuse yourself, but you knew it wouldn't work
"I'm sorry dear" the other woman smiled at you with pity "you know that when-"
"When the bear calls nothing else matters" you interrupted her "I know...I'll be right up"
You wiped your hands on your dress, not caring if it wasn't ladylike, and walked out of the kitchen with as much dignity as you could muster. Maudie looked at you like you were some poor wretch on death row and you couldn't help but roll your eyes at her as you remembered how she and the other ladies of the castle used to look at you. They had been jealous of you for the royal family's favoritism, but now they were just relieved not to be in your place.

Stay (Elinor x Fem!Reader)
part 4 of the “The maiden and the bear” series (part 1)
________________________________
"I'm really sorry" Merida told you, walking slowly past you, towards the door.
You simply nodded, trying to appear calm and confident, as if you weren't completely terrified and mentally saying goodbye to your loved ones wherever they were. No one would ever dare to say it out loud, but everyone knew that every time you entered the bear's room (because the queen would never behave like that), it could be the last time they saw you alive.
You knew it, it terrified you, but you still kept coming back. Not only because it was your duty as a castle maiden, you knew that if you wanted to run no one would blame you, but because there were times when, in the midst of it all, you could discern a warmth in the older woman's touch, a glimpse of her humanity. And that was what you clung to every time you walked in there.
"Your majesty?" you whispered carefully
You knew it was useless, she hardly ever spoke to you when she was like this, but you had nothing to lose by trying. She turned to look at you and you swallowed as you felt the emptiness of the bear's eyes greet you. She smiled and beckoned you closer, a seemingly friendly gesture, but one that sent shivers down your spine.
"D-do you need something?" you asked, taking slow, shaky steps toward her.
The woman simply waited until you were in front of her to wrap her arms around your waist and pull you towards her. You gasped quietly and tried not to blush too much when a firm hand cupped your chin, forcing you to look into those black eyes that filled your soul with fear and excitement at the same time.
Elinor looked at you curiously as you put your hands on her shoulders for balance. You weren't fighting, you weren't trying to walk away like you did the first few times. You were just waiting. Waiting for her to take from you what she wanted, without complaining. It wasn't right...and something in her woke up.
You gasped again, louder this time as the queen hid her face in your neck, but instead of feeling her teeth marking you as hers, you felt something warm and wet. They were tears.
"Your majesty?"
"I'm sorry" she whispered, although in the solitude of the room it was much louder. "I'm so sorry, my dear Y/N"
You were frozen in place. This was by far the most she had ever said to you in this state, and she had never, ever apologized, much less cried in your presence.
"You have to go" she said "I'm hurting you"
"Your Majesty? Are you alright?"
You felt her smile faintly against your skin, even as her sobs grew louder. You really didn't know what to do, you were used to dealing with the bear, not the woman. This was something new and somehow much more terrifying.
Because you knew what the bear wanted, you knew what to give it to appease it, but at the time, you had no idea what the queen might need. You felt useless. All you could do was wrap your arms around her neck to hug her back. That seemed to calm her down a bit.
"I'm hurting you" she said again "but I swear that was never my intention. When I chose you as my maiden, I had no idea all of this would happen. I never would have made you stay if I had known what kind of monster I would turn into"
"You're not a monster" you said immediately without thinking.
She tensed up a bit and you internally cursed yourself for your impulsiveness. You were never supposed to interrupt anyone in the royal family, much less the one person who could rip you in two at any moment. You were about to apologize when she squeezed you a little tighter.
"We both know I am" she said "but thank you"
You didn't know what to answer, so you didn't try, feeling that you had already exceeded the limit of your luck. This was nothing you had expected, but despite the warmth the older woman was showing at the time, your mind was screaming at you not to let your guard down. You never knew when the beast would take over again.
"You have to go" the queen said again suddenly
"Excuse me?"
"You have to return to your land, to your clan"
"I...I can't, Your Majesty" you said nervously
"Why?" she asked, still against your neck
"My clan enjoys an enormous privilege because I am here. If I return... it is because I have failed in my duty and that will not be good for my father's pride"
"No one could ever say that you failed in your duty" she replied "everyone in this castle knows that you have done much more than anyone should"
"But what about outside the castle?" you whispered, more to yourself than to her.
Elinor frowned a little. Her mind immediately caught onto the cause of your concern: it wasn't about your clan, it was about you. If you went back, people might take it as a failure and your honor might be terribly tarnished. It didn't matter if you were Lord MacGuffin's daughter, you would be an outcast. Your options were that or stay here, where she could reach you.
"Then go to another clan" she muttered "or to the forest. Anywhere away from here... away from me"
That surprised you and must have been noticeable because the woman broke away from you almost immediately to study your face. You were confused. She had made you her favorite, you were the only one who could calm the bear and now she was asking you to run away?
"That's precisely why" she said, as if reading your thoughts "there's something in you that it wants. The bear...it begs for you, it needs you, it craves for you. It's always hungry for you and it will never be satisfied…I can't protect you…and I know it's hard to believe considering all I've done to you, but I promise I've tried to keep it under control…but I don't think I can for much longer. You have to leave before I completely lose control and it does something much worse to you."
Her words weighed on you like a death sentence. Something much worse...something wilder maybe? You didn't like one bit the way your stomach flipped with excitement at the mere thought.
"But majesty...I can't leave you" you said "I'm the only one who can do something when this happens...you need me"
"I do" she replied immediately "I need you more than you can imagine...but I can't ask you to keep doing this, I can't ask you to stay...not when you're in danger because of me"
"But if I go, who is going to help you?"
"I'll think something"
You looked into her eyes, despite the fact that it was against any protocol, trying to look for... something, anything that would tell you that you really were in danger as she said. But you only found brown eyes full of fear, sadness and something else. The most beautiful and human eyes you have ever seen.
In front of you was not an imposing beast that was guided by its instinct and at whose mercy you were most nights, but there was a brave and strong woman, human and broken, a woman who feared for someone else's life, not her own. You were facing Elinor, your queen, the one for whom songs were written, for whose honor the king would fight to the death. The same one you knew you would stay for day after day.
The decision was terribly simple and obvious to you.
"And if I want to stay?" you asked softly, almost in a whisper
Elinor gasped a little and frowned in confusion, looking at you as if you had grown a second head or as if you were going to transform into some kind of magical creature in front of her.
"Why would you want to do that?" she asked "after everything you've been through because of me, why would you want to stay?"
"For the same reason I accepted in the first place" you said "for the same reason I keep coming back every time, even knowing it could be the last"
You didn't know what was happening, normally you wouldn't dare to respond so haughtily in front of her, but it seemed that the bear was in you now, not in the queen, and its power ran through your veins. Maybe that's why it called you because you shared the same wild heart.
"And what would that reason be?" Elinor asked, a little anxious.
Her stomach churned with emotion and she could feel in her body how the beast struggled to take control again, to possess you. She wanted to hear what the bear already knew, what had probably been the reason for her need of you.
You observed how the queen's eyes were painted black, but not completely covered, leaving a kind of black and brown swirl, as if they were fighting. It was a beautiful sight for you and using the bravery that grew in you, you smiled.
"You"
The word seemed to undo the chains she didn't know she had on and for the first time, she was in complete sync with the beast inside her as she smiled back and pushed you onto the bed.
The creature that was above you devouring you was neither bear nor human, but its fire was yours, only yours. And it was something worth staying for.
