back on my cecil is an angel but he doesn't know/remember bullshit the erikas didn't exist even though they have always existed they're right there but we can't address them or look at them, you're not allowed to say they exist, abandoned by a god and left to roam the world. divinity through abandonment. angels are not divine until they are in a place that lacks it. and then someone came along and helped define their existence and advocate for them. kind of just like him. but mostly im thinking about his angel wing tattoos I gave him that he doesn't even know he has. "You wanna ride the ferris wheel with me?"

"I can't." You reach into your jeans pocket and pull out the inner fabric. "I'm all out."

Daniel raises his hand and waves around two tickets. "I got you."

"Well, alright then." You pinch one out of his hands and give it over to the ride attendant.

Daniel does the same and then extends his arm, gesturing for you to step ahead of him. "After you, m'lady."

The attendant rolls his eyes from where he's watching you with mild annoyance as you each take a seat.

As the ride starts to move, and you begin your first loop around, you pull out your phone. Holding it tightly, you open the camera app, glancing at Daniel. "Hey. Selfie?"

"Yeah, why not?" 

Daniel moves closer into the frame, and you snap a couple of shots. You can go through them and pick your favourite later. As you snap a few more, Daniel nudges you and whispers, "Can I kiss your cheek? For the… picture?"

"Uh… yeah, okay." 

Daniel gently pulls your face closer with one hand and plants the softest kiss against your skin. You snap a few more shots and notice that your face seems to be getting pinker. You're blushing.

"Uh-" You quickly lock your phone and slide it into the safety of your jacket zipper pocket. "Okay, that'll do."

"Hm." Daniel doesn't look away from you, and after a handful of minutes, it becomes impossible not to look back. He smiles. "So… I- um…" Daniel scratches the back of his neck and blows out a breath. "I wanted to ask you something?"

"Okay… what's up?"

"Well, um… I just noticed that lately we hang out, like, a lot. And it's been really nice, you know, getting to know you and just… being around you." Daniel's fingers walk over to yours, and he hesitates a little before covering your hand with his. "I really like being around you. I really like… you. And if you don't feel the same, that's fine, but I just wanted to ask… would you, um- would you wanna go out sometime?"

"Like a date?"

Daniel nods. Butterflies fill your stomach, and your heart pounds. It just so happens that the seat you're in on the ferris wheel stops at the very top in this very perfect moment. You turn your hand so that you can interlock your fingers with his. 

"Yes. Yeah, I'd love too."

"Okay… uh, great, ha." Daniel chuckles and wipes his brow, pretending like his brushing away sweat. "Phew."

You giggle and then decide to be brave. "Can I ask you something as well, then?"

"'Course."

"Will you kiss me?"

"A-are you sure?"

"I am."

"Really?"

"Yes, Danny. Now..." Your hands reach to grab his, and you guide them to your own jaw. He instinctively starts to caress your face with his thumbs. "Kiss me like we're in a romance novel."

Daniel wastes no time then, pulling you close and testing the waters by pecking your lips a couple of times. He pulls back a little, smiling at your closed eyes and tinted cheeks before moving in again. 

This time, his kiss is firmer, and you wrap your arms around his neck. You pull him closer, and boldness takes over as you nip at his lower lip. He pulls back in shock, grinning. "Wow, Y/N. I thought you -"

You chase his mouth, wanting more. "Yeah, wow, indeed. Now, come back here." 

You move to kiss him once more, but then the attendant is loudly clearing his throat, and you're jumping apart. "Shit. Sorry!" Neither of you had even noticed that the ferris wheel had begun to move again. 

The attendant sighs, then points over to the queue that has formed, shaking his head.

"Okay, we get it." You grab Daniel's hand and lift the bar, then hop out of the seat. "Sorry again."

You hastily move past the line of giggling teens and surprised parents. 

"I can't believe we didn't realise. Am I that good of a kisser?" Daniel winks, bumping your shoulder with his as you walk out into the middle of the funfair. 

"Uh, no." You spot the 'hook-a-duck' stand and start leading Daniel into that direction. "I think I was the better kisser. And I think as a reward, you should win me a giant plushy."

"Oh, really?" Daniel laughs, and then you pull his arm around your neck, wrapping your own around his waist. "So, um, does this mean we're like… you know?"

"What?" You tease. "I don't know."

Daniel sighs, then leans down to your ear. "Does this mean we're together?"

"Hmmm…" You stop walking as you reach the game stand and pull him down for another kiss. "You tell me." 

You kiss him once, twice, and then three times more. When you pull away, you look around at the different plush animals that are lined up on shelves at the back of the hook-a-duck stall. Daniel pulls some more tickets out of his back pocket. "You know, a kiss… or four still doesn't answer my question."

You giggle, pinching the tickets out of his hand. "It means yes, Daniel. Yes. And by the way, I really like you, too."

notes: so i’m gonna say these letters are all based around daniel being like 21+ or something, to help you visualise (and me write it haha).

A = Adventures (what kind of crazy shit would you get into together?)

I don’t think you two would be all that crazy. Maybe the odd spontaneous road trip. Sometimes you would go hiking. You actually share a goal of eventually travelling abroad.

B = Bond (what kind of - platonic, obviously - relationship do you have with each other?)

You have the closest friendship possibly. Anyone who knows you says you are inseparable, joined at the hip. It makes sense when you tell people that you grew up together, as neighbours, your mum's both besties, too.

C = Cuddling (do you ever cuddle? how physically affectionate are you?)

You both love cuddling and are both very physically affection. Sometimes he will offer you his arm while walking together, and resting your head on his shoulder was a regular occurrence when watching movies.

D = Dance (do you ever dance together? how?)

Most of the time when you go out for evenings, you go dancing. Again, your mum's were also best friends. So, Daniel's mother had taught him to dance, they'd both taught you.

E = Enemies (were you ever enemies? Do you share the same enemies?)

Never. You'd had fights, of course, but nothing too crazy. Usually they'd result in a day or two of ignoring the other person before you talked it out and hugged. As for the second part, any enemy of Daniel's was an enemy of yours, and vice versa.

Fight (how often do you fight? how do you resolve conflict?)

Barely. Usually over dumb things, too.

Gain (how have you helped each other improve as people?)

Daniel always pushed you out of your comfort zone. He never let you give up on your passions. And for him, you always made sure that he never let himself get pushed around. You constantly told him that he should defend himself more, and not just with his karate.

Help (how do they ask you for help? how do they help you when you need it?)

You're close enough that you trust each other fully - when either of you needs help, you ask for it, straight up.

Injured/ill (how would they act if you got hurt or sick?)

Daniel hovers when you are sick or injured. Asking you constantly if you need anything, and if he's not around, he calls. With him, you are less overbearing. Still worried/concerned, but you check in less frequently... to his face that is. Instead, you bother his Mum or Mr Miyagi, asking through them how he is.

Jokes (what’s their sense of humor like? how do you joke about things together?)

You both have that quick wit. The back and forth never stops, and you're always laughing together or at each other. Daniel's jokes can be more tame than yours though, sometimes you'll let slip a dirty joke or two.

Kisses (do you ever kiss? how? Kisses not on the lips count)

When you say goodbye, you peck each other on the cheek. A quick hug and a swift peck is never, ever forgotten.

Love (how do they show you they care?)

Daniel overshares. Not in a bad way, in a way that shows you he has complete trust and faith in you. He tells you everything. You, show him love through listening to it all, always being there for him.

Meeting (how did you meet? how did you become friends?)

Neither of you would remember your first meeting, as you were babies, born only several weeks apart. You were neighbours from birth. When he moved, your family also moved, that's how close you were.

Nesting (do you co-habitate at all? how?)

You had a small apartment together for about a year. Eventually, you were going on dates, and having them over, and so you decided to move. But you still lived on the same street, 4 houses between you both.

Oasis (is there a specific place that is “your place”? what is it?)

You love to hang out in Miyagi's garden. Sometimes you'll train together there, sometimes you'll just sit and talk. There's also a particular coffee shop that you frequent often.

Protection (how protective are they over you?)

You're incredibly protective over each other. But, with that being said, it never applies to dates or partners. You never want to make a possible romance feel awkward by being overly involved and protective. You want Daniel to be happy, and he wants the same for you. In short, relationships are the exception- the only time you push away that protective instinct. Unless those said partners break hearts...

Query (how inquisitive are they when it comes to getting to know you?)

You already know everything there is to know about each other. You never push the other into sharing anything they don't want to. However, in your pre-teen years, you would constantly ask every question you could possibly think up, even the silly ones.

Record (what’s something you’ll never let them live down?)

You tease Daniel a lot about the 'lessons' Miyagi taught him. You thought it was quite obvious what was going on when it was happening, and you admitted to Daniel that you actually laughed with Miyagi about it a couple of times.

Support (how would they show their support for you? how far would that support go?)

He was like Kris Jenner at your college graduation, cheering a little too loudly and snapping photos. He always made sure you felt proud of yourself by telling you how proud he was of you. Your way of showing support was giving him the biggest hugs, and sometimes gifts.

Trust (how much do they trust you? how do they show you that?)

Again, you tell each other everything. There isn't anything you can think of that you would tell him. Daniel trusted you the same, the only time he withheld anything was when he was being bullied in school. The sudden decision to learn karate was explained to you through the lie of 'I just want to try something new.' But it didn't last long. After only the first lesson, he had met up with you, complaining about his aching hands and shoulders, and then inevitably spilled why he really wanted to train. It wasn't even am issue of trust, he just felt embarrassed.

Uplift (how do you bring each other up?)

Movie nights, or dancing are your favourite ways to uplift or cheer each other up.

Vacation (do you ever travel together? what’s that like?)

You haven't travelled far, but you both really want to. Daniel wants to travel somewhere cold, and you aren't too fussed, as long as you can get away for a little break soon.

Worry (do they worry about you? how often?)

He worries all the time. It's part of the package deal when you have a best friend. Though, it shows the most when you are hurt, heartbroken, or sick. You mostly get worried for Daniel when he gets mad. What happened with Si*ver lives in you head rent free, and you'd be lying if you said you weren't worried about him falling into a trap like that again.

X = Xerox (are there any traits or habits of theirs that you’ve picked up by accident?)

Daniel likes to talk with his hands, and that is definitely something you picked up from him right away. I

Y = Yahoo (what’s an inside joke you share?)

You often bring up the iconic (if you do say so yourself) audience heckle from Daniel's first tournament - "Johnny, you're a creampuff!" Jokingly, you'll call each other 'creampuff' when one of you jumps or gets scared. 

Z = Zany (do they have a weird side only you get to see? what’s it like?) ((I changed this one a little because I really wanted to include this!))

Daniel doesn't talk about what happened to him, with many people. The bloody knuckles, the bruised foot, the horrifying second tournament. Along with the events of what happened in Okinawa. In fact, he still doesn't talk about it. However, a few weeks after his second tournament, when the excitement had died down, he had a nightmare. You'd been staying over that day, sleeping on the sofa bed and when you knocked on his door to ask if he was okay, he let you in. And he told you everything, and about how it all made him feel. He showed you one spot on his knuckle that had actually scarred. He also told how guilty he felt for that one night he yelled at Mr Miyagi. And that's the side you see more than anyone else in his life: the vulnerability, and the ptsd.

I have a theory about Krester: In episode 5, during the call, Krester is seen tapping his finger on his cross in sync with the ticking. I think he kind of "triggers" himself to jump off the ship intentionally. He might remember it from previous simulations. What do you think about this? I'd love to read your thoughts on this!

Oh wow, wonderful train of thought! I've never actually considered this, but really like your idea of Krester "triggering" himself intentionally, because it certainly would make sense bearing in mind he's the only one of the jumpers we see intentionally interacting with an item in consonance with the ticking noise.

Since we're at it, let's do a weak and holey analysis on how each of the main individuals, who we witnessed are clearly affected by the ticking noise, react towards it, including their established motivations, emotional state and actions:

Yuk Je:

Motivation (during The Calling) >>>

has desperately sticked to the imposter plan / being passive (by extension could correlate with: sticking to the dictated plot / action potentially controlled by the SIM creator)

has tried to protect her daughter at all cost, but forfeits grip over Ling Yi's and maybe her own destiny (speculative if there are personal feelings of failure involved)

has regretted to have stepped on the Kerberos in the first place

has blamed Ling Yi and her desire for freedom as a cause for their current misery

Emotional state (during The Calling) >>>

lonely, lost, doubtful (more or less pushed away by Ling Yi)

In conclusion: the love and emotional bond towards Ling Yi and thus an inability to change clouds her pragmatic judgement in regards to what might endanger her daughter.

Reaction to ticking noise >>>

hears a faint ticking noise in the cabin (externally)

reacts a little surprised / alert but then immediately marches in sync with the sound

looks around, hesitant, as Ling Yi calls out for her before continuing to throw herself off-board

Krester:

Motivation (during The Calling) >>>

has sided with his mentally unstable, zealot mother and the radical mutiny

has acted actively on finding the boy as alleged cause for all the occurring deaths, but continues rather passively or intermediary during certain actions (f. e. he cuts himself off the group fight and flees to persevere in the lower section of the ship, he stops his mother from striking out any further at Maura etc.)

has betrayed Tove and their original plan to break free from their religious household and traumatic past to build up a life on their own, instead follows their parents' calling,

has pushed away Àngel and another chance to change his loyalty and path of life

In conclusion: the emotional bond towards Iben, the guilt in regards to Ada's death and the hold of religious faith cause an inevitable inability to make pragmatic decisions.

Emotional state (during The Calling)>>>

lonely, lost, doubtful (rejected by Iben, more or less abandoned by Tove, lost Ada, lost Àngel)

Reaction to ticking noise >>>

sits alone and taps the cross pendant in time to ticking noise

doesn't react to Anker calling out for him before throwing himself off the ship

drops his cross pendant before falling off, leaving it on board

Iben:

Motivation (during The Calling) >>>

following god's will ("justice is always on the side of the survivors")

still expediently leading the mutiny, therefore she's unaffected at first

supporting the aim to steer the ship on initial course to America

building up a church in America

Emotional state (during The Calling):

slightly shifting, very unsteady (after she hears about Krester's suicide)

Reaction to ticking noise >>>

no reaction at first, only in trance after Anker informs them about Krester's suicide

is tied up and therefore physically unable to jump off the ship

Àngel:

Motivation (during The Calling) >>>

shifts in motivation are unclear

probably sticks to Ramiro's and his plan to reach America

refuses profoundly to go back

In conclusion: he's emotionally torn, on one hand clearly affected by Krester's rejection and on the other hand realising he's abandoned as Ramiro has left him alone as well, but he still holds onto the hope of someone returning for him and the plans to start a new life in America.

Emotional state (during The Calling):

very distraught, lonely, fearful (left alone by Ramiro, rejected by Krester)

eventually calmed by Ramiro, who returns to him

Reaction to ticking noise >>>

barricades himself into the cabin by blocking the door

is not tied up, but in a trance state and self-soothing stance

Virginia:

Motivation (during The Calling) >>>

???

not sure if working as a pimp in America qualifies as motivation (maybe someone could add to this)

Emotional state (during The Calling):

potentially lonely (she closes herself off from other passengers, but it's unclear if she does so deliberately)

Reaction to ticking noise >>>

standing at the rail, alluding to her almost jumping off the ship (but it's debatable what can be witnessed here)

she describes her trance as "one of the strangest dreams", almost seems like she was positively fascinated by it.

All these characters have some traits in common, namely:

following the aims of a higher authority / instance

are helplessly trapped in their established roles, but emotionally wavering

unwillingness or lack of strength to move forward, past the fear, sadness and trauma they've encountered and change their destiny (resulting in strong passivity)

anteriorly confronted by (a) strong emotional trigger(s).

Individually they are entering the trance state in slightly different ways:

Yuk Je: immediately, hears an external ticking sound,

Krester: immediately, hears an external ticking sound but also potentially self-triggers by tapping in unisono on his cross pendant,

Iben: not immediately, but is affected due to an emotional reaction overwhelming her,

Àngel: unclear if immediately, but manages to stay seated in self-soothing embrace during his trance, holding what looks like the letter each of them has received,

Virginia: unclear if immediately, unclear if purposefully "acted out" a trance state, therefore unclear if she was in a trance to begin with.

Accordingly I'd conclude it might depend on self-motivation of each individual to fulfill a certain task, potentially dictated by a higher authority or guideline or lack thereof that determines whether or not certain characters are "activated" by the ticking noise or can "self activate" to enter this mode.

Buuuut that being said I also really like your idea of Krester (unconsciously?) remembering something like this happening in previous sim and maybe even realising he's made the wrong choices in this sim therefore being like: "Woops goodbye. I go off, I guess. See you in the next sim!".
