The (Personal) Is (Political)

~7 hours, Dall-E 3 via Bing Image Creator, generated under the Code of Ethics of Are We Art Yet?

Or, Dear Microsoft and OpenAI: Your Filters Can't Stop Me From Saying Things: An interactive exercise in why all art is political and game of Spot The Symbols

A rare piece I consider Fully Finished simply as a jpeg, though I may do something physical with it regardless. "Director commentary" below, but I strongly encourage you to go over this and analyze it yourself before clicking through, then see how much your reading aligns with my intent.

Elements I told the model to add and a brief (...or at least inexhaustive) overview of why:

Anime style and character figures - Frequently associated with commercial "low" art and consumer culture, in East Asia and the English-speaking world alike, albeit in different ways - justly or otherwise. There is frequently an element of racism to the denigration of anime styles in the west; nearly any American artist who has taken formal illustration classes can tell you a story of being told that anime style will only hinder them, that no one will hire them if they see anime, or even being graded more harshly and scrutinized for potential anime-esque elements if they like anime or imply that they may like anime - including just by being Asian and young. On the other hand, it is true that there is a commercial strategy of "slap an anime girl on it and it will sell". The passion fans feel for these characters is genuine - and it is very, very exploitable. In fact, this commercialization puts anime styles in particular in a very contentious position when it comes to AI discussions!

Dark-skinned boy with platinum and pink [and blue] hair - Racism and colorism! They're a thing, no matter how much the worst people in the world want you to think they're long over and "critical race theory" is the work of evil anti-American terrorists! I chose his appearance because I knew that unless I was incredibly lucky, I would have to fight with this model for multiple hours to get satisfactory results on this point in particular - and indeed I did. It was an interesting experience - what didn't surprise me was how much work it took me to get a skin color darker than medium-dark tan; what did surprise me was that the hair color was very difficult to get right. In anime art, for dark skin to be matched with light hair and eyes is common enough to be...pretty problematic. Bing Image Creator/Dall-E, on the other hand, swings completely in the opposite direction and struggles with the concept of giving dark-skinned characters any hair color OTHER than black, demanding pretty specific phrasing to get it right even 70% of the time. (I might cynically call this yet another illustration against the pervasive copy-paste myth...) There is also much to say about the hair texture and facial features - while I was pleased to see that more results than I expected gave me textured hair and/or box braids without me asking for it, those were still very much in the minority, and I never saw any deviation from the typical anime facial structures meant to illustrate Asian and white characters. Not even once!

Pink and blue color palette - Our subject is transgender. Bias self-check time: did you make that association as quickly as you would with a light-skinned character, or even Sylveon?

Long hair, cute clothes, lots of accessories - Styling while transmasc is a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation, doubly so if you're not white. In many locations, the medical establishment and mainstream attitude demands total conformity to the dominant culture's standard conventional masculinity, or else "revoking your man card" isn't just a joke meant to uphold the idea that men are "better" than women, but a very real threat. In many queer communities, especially online, transmascs are expected to always be cute femboys who love pink (while transfems are frequently degraded and seen as threats for being butch), and being Just Some Guy is viewed as inherently a sign of assimilationism at best and abusiveness at worst. It is an eternal tug-of-war where "cuteness" and ornamentation are both demanded and banned at the same time. Black and brown people are often hypermasculinized and denied the opportunity to even be "cute" in the first place, regardless of gender. Long hair and how gender is read into it is extremely culture-dependent; no matter what it means to you, if anything, the dominant culture wherever you are will read it as it likes.

Trophies and medals - For one, the trans sports Disk Horse has set feminism back by nearly 50 years; I'm barely a Real History-Remembering Adult and yet I clearly remember a time when the feminist claim about gender in sports was predominantly "hey, it's pretty fucked up that sports are segregated by sex rather than weight class or similar measures, especially when women's sports are usually paid much less and given weirdly oversexualized uniforms," but then a few loud living embodiments of turds in the punch bowl realized that might mean treating trans people fairly and now it's super common for self-proclaimed feminists - mostly white ones - to claim that the strongest woman will still never measure up to the weakest man and this is totally a feminist statement because they totally want to PROTECT women (with invasive medical screenings on girls as young as 12 to prove they're Really Women if they perform too well, of course). For two, Black and brown people are stereotyped as being innately more sporty, physically strong, and, again, Masculine(TM) than others, which frequently intersects with item 1...and if you think it only affects trans women, I am sorry my friend but it is so much worse and more extensive than you think.

Hearts - They mean many things. Love. Happiness. Cuteness. Social media engagement?

TikTok - A platform widely known and hated around these parts for its arcane and deeply regressive algorithm; I felt it deserved to be name/layout/logodropped for reasons that, if they're not clear already, should become so in the final paragraph.

Computers, cameras and cell phones - My initial specification was that one of the phones should be on Instagram and another on TikTok, which the model instead chose to interpret as putting a TikTok sticker on the laptop, but sure, okay. They're ubiquitous in the modern day, for better and for worse. For all the debate over whether phones and social media are Good For Us or Bad For Us, the fact of the matter is, they seem to be a net positive-to-neutral, whose impacts depend on the person - but they do still have major drawbacks. The internet is a platform for conspiracy theories and pseudoscience and dangerous hoaxes to spread farther than ever before. Social media culture leaves many people feeling like we're always being watched and every waking moment of our lives must be Perfect - and in some senses, we are always being watched these days. Digital privacy is eroding by the day, already being used to enforce all the most unjust laws on the books, which leads to-

Pigs - I wrote the prompt with the intention that it would just be a sticker on the laptop, but instead it chose to put them everywhere, and given that I wanted to make a somewhat stealthy statement about surveillance, especially of the marginalized...thanks for that, Dall-E! ;)

Alligators - A counter to the pigs; a short-lived antifascist symbol after...this.

Details I did not intend but love anyway:

The blue in the hair - I only prompted for platinum and pink in the hair, but the overall color palette description "bled" over here anyway, completing the trans flag, making it even more blatant, and thus even more effective as a bias self-check.

The Macbook - I only specified a laptop. Hilariously ironic, to me, that a service provided through Bing interpreted "laptop" as "Macbook" nearly every time. In my recent history, 22 out of 24 attempts show, specifically, a Macbook. Microsoft v. OpenAI divorce arc when? ;) But also, let us not forget Apple's role in the ever-worsening sanitization of the internet. A Macbook with a TikTok sticker (or, well, a Tiikok sticker - recognizable enough) - I can think of little more emblematic of one of the main things I was complaining about, and it was a happy accident. Or perhaps an unhappy one, considering what it may imply about Apple's grip on culture and communications.

Which brings me to my process:

Generated over ~7 hours with Dall-E 3 through Bing Image Creator - The most powerful free tool out there for txt2img these days, as well as a nightmare of filters and what may be the most disgustingly, cloyingly impersonal toxic positivity I've ever witnessed from a tool. It wants to be Art(TM), yet it wants to ban Politics(TM); two things which are very much incompatible - and so, I wanted to make A Controversial Statement using only the most unflaggable, innocuous elements imaginable, no matter how long it took.

All art is political. All life is political. All our "defaults" are cultural, and therefore political. Anything whatsoever can be a symbol.

If you want all art to be a substance-free "look at the pretty picture :)" - it doesn't matter how much you filter, buddy, you've got a big storm coming.

No siren abilities and he's grateful for that since they creep him out

Sea creature speech includes krakens

As it turns out,the more he loves the sea,the stronger he gets and this is why he keeps his seapunk side in moderation

Eventually,as far forward as him being married,he can create water out of thin air and he fucks around with it more than serious training

Being a demigod gets way harder to hide in Tods and it's both funny and angsty

LONG POST! you can skip.

I have come to rant and vent about Jack from Wonder Woman 2023 and why they are a transgender/TRANSFEM allegory.

I would like to preference this by saying that you can feel represented through this character for a multitude of reasons regardless of being trans or not but I personally think they’re some sort of transfem allegory and I’m here to talk about why because 1) its my blog and 2) I am obsessed and I’m here to argue that they are transfem, a transfem allegory or at the very least transfem coded.

Who is Jack?

“Jack” is an extreme Wonder Woman “fanboy” that we know is ill, their tests have been coming up slim and they've had a multitude of doctors come and try and cure them and to give them a couple of good memories before they pass, their parents ask Wonder Woman to spend a day with them.

Allegory 1.

From their timid nature, I assume that a lot of their life they feel like an experience is ruined if they're involved or feel apologetic if they're not perfect all the time. This to me makes me think “Jack” likes to try and embody Wonder Woman during stressful or traumatizing situations. They idealized her to never be afraid, anxious, or quiet.

Allegory 2.

There’s this montage that features “Jack” doing a bunch of things that an Amazon would do like archery, wearing the armory, or eating the fruit, but also things that Wonder Woman would do like use her lasso, throw her tiara or sword fight, etc.

It makes me think “Jack” wanted to spend their time doing things that made them feel strong, things that could really immerse them into the Wonder Woman experience. Something they probably yearned for themselves, probably used imagining themselves in the life of an Amazon to escape.

Allegory 3.

Point 1.

“I don't think this should be what I… like.”

There are expectations for you in the world, and certain people, most of the time a trans girl will feel the pressure that she should be this way or act this way but they simply can’t because it's not how their brains work, it's not how they function, and when you're told otherwise you start to think there’s something deeply wrong with you like you’re broken.

Point 2.

“It’s my dad… and the other kids.”

Trans people, you ever have the dad or either parent feel like they can’t support you and you have the desire to be called your gender but they avoid calling you gendered things at all like “Boy” or “Girl” and avoid gendered things entirely by just calling you “Kid” or “child”? Because that is what this feels like. A relationship between a father and son is strong but when the son shows disinterest in that relationship then the father feels rejected. Their happiness to have a son feels strained and they begin to wonder how they should interact with the child.

“Jack” also feels like their dad doesn't support them and their interests, be it something happening off-panel or the natural feeling trans youth feel like they’re being subtly judged by their parent even though they don't want to say it. That along with their community judging them to their face and ostracizing them for being different.

Point 3.

“Why can't I like Superman or Batman and… I don't know… Baseball and like normal stuff? For a boy? Why is this good?”

Boys feel represented through Superman or Batman, a strong invincible, and macho man. Not a woman, why does Wonder Woman make “Jack” feel seen for the first time in their life? Why does the world of a woman give “Jack” so much escapism? Do you get where I’m going with this?

Point 4.

“Is it because I’m sick inside? Is that why God made me sick?”

It's the idea that inside you, regardless of what you may look like the stuff inside you makes you sick and wrong. The person inside you that you've been holding onto for so long. It's like you feel impure and sinful and like you deserve to be punished for something you didn't ask for cause then maybe the punishment will make everything feel right again.

This to me at the very least sounds like the typical “Superboy trapped in a Wonder Girl’s body” if you know what I mean. I know they're coming to terms with their death and this character might die but I hope they don't, I really do.

This character was supposed to reach out from the pages and touch the reader who relates to it most, like making male Wonder Woman fans feel seen… but how come it reduced me; a trans girl Wonder Woman fan to tears? I felt that I connected to Wonder Woman, I felt my gender through her just like “Jackie” probably does. I selfishly want to see more of them personally.

Anyway, I love them so so so much. Wonder Woman come in many different shapes and forms and personally I like to think of them as my favorite “Wonder Girl.”

ok this will be a bit long cuz like even though ive answered tis before, i don't think i have given an answer that expressed myself as good as this one

it's because i understand the bigender / genderfluid hcs, in all honesty they make sense, i could def see vil as not being cis, plus, they r only be adding rep to ppl. there's no problem w the genderfluid or bigender hc because it's easy to see someone who is agaisnt gender roles to be trans and it's easy to see vil as someone who identifies with more than one gender

however, the transfem hc is bad because it goes AGAINST vil's character.

had vil not been a character that explicitly says he despises gender roles and even gets angry at the mention of dance moves being "too feminine" for a man to make by epel, there wouldn't be any problem w it, because it makes sense to see a character that presents in a feminine way as a trans woman just as much as it does to see them as just a cis dude who likes to dress feminine. but the whole point with vil's character is that he dislikes and refuses to follow gender roles, hence why he wears makeup, uses dresses, heels and acts in a way many consider feminine, because he wants to fight back the mindset that men need to be masculine and women need to be feminine. the transfem vil hc goes against that because it takes vil, a character that is constantly mentioned to be a man that fights the way society views men, and says "he's actually a woman" all because of the way he acts. do you get it? it's pushing gender roles in the one character in twst that explicitly hates it, it's literally doing what he has been fighting through his career. in the jp game vil calls himself by a gender neutral term, one that is commonly used by women, because he doesn't believe there is such a thing that is "exclusively for women" in the eng, the way they translated was by making him call himself a queen, that is a term made for women but that now days you see being used as a gender neutral term, it doesn't make sense to use those two things as "transfem coding" because literally a quick research on vil's character will show you that he used such terms BECAUSE he is a man and uses them as an attack to the gender roles. if vil WERE to be a trans woman, she would act masculine instead, call herself a king and use terms like handsome, because by following the logic, despite the way he identifies and was born as, he'd still hate gender roles and would fight them, especially because people think that transfem/transwomen HAVE to be feminine, and the ones that aren't get invalidated and hated on a lot of times by their OWN COMMUNITY. the transfem vil hc just simply doesn't make any sense at all and it was made to push gender roles onto a character that was made to break them, furthermore ppl that hc this r like normally super fucking annoying and keep pushing it as canon as if they played through all of vil's stories with their eyes closed and didn't actually take anything he said in.

the hc is problematic to both transmasc and transfem people, especially to those who are gnc, who barely get any rep and ate constantly attacked, ppl don't seem to understand this but this type of hc it follows the made up rules bigots made for genders= men have to masculine otherwise they're not real men, women have to be feminine otherwise they're not real women

when you point out such things ppl will bring up literally anything they can and even accuse you of being transphobic whole supporting a transphobic hc themselves. people don't seem to understand the importance of gender non conforming characters but as someone that is a trans man that doesn't care about how ppl think a trans man should act or look, ive gotten invalidated and harassed because of it, sometimes even by people that are also from the trans community and it hurts, you think you've found your place, a community that will accept you, and then simply because you refuse to follow made up rules, suddenly you're not welcome there anymore, and i know im not the only one who shares such a sentiment because ive seen multiple other ppl abt how hcs like this make them dysphoric (just like me) because they relate to the character and find them to be a safe space and to be comforting because they see themselves in them, so having them be pushes into the rules of society reminds them of what happens to them and it hurts them.

to finish this off; transfem vil hc makes me genuinely dysphoric and brings me bad memories + ive literally been attacked and called the T SLUR by one of the ppl that hc that so i def don't want any ties to that community. meanwhile the genderfluid/bigender/etc hc don't interfere with his character at all and it actually make sense for his character

Bladders Gat3 Finish doc

:et me get the rest of my fucking feelings out about baldurs gate:

im so mad bc any character who is not human or realism/white passoid is literally regarded with the same type of dismissal that you would see in mainstream media. all the companions that are not white passing are treated like shit and have bad ends.

-Lae'zel (gith) gets abducted by the a bad guy for the last 1/3 of the game (also we could talk about her being the fighter class as default is also a bit racist, but the deep dive will be its own essay). and then she can die and not be able to be resurrected. (resurrection scrolls and revivify spells ONLY work on companions and not npcs)

Wyll (THE ONLY BLACK HUMAN MAIN CHARACTER, side note we could talk about how is name is spelled like a white mormon names their kids) is a big talking point bc he is constantly strung between the expectations put upon him by himself, his family, and then his pact matron. AND NO MATTER WHAT OPTION IS CHOSEN WILL CONTINUES TO SUFFER IN THIS EXECUTIVE PURGATORY. He starts as a "i have to kill this devil" actually its a tiefling (suddenly its now fantasy racial infighting, so of course u dont wanna kill another companion so early in the game, so Wyll is forced through Hell's Circles and the exposure makes him grown large demonic horns. (Wyll does not have control over his body or himself, nor his actions, and only suffers the consequences of the actions of the Tav (PC)). Wyll even gets to have the "I did everything for my father's (approval just to have my father misunderstand me and then the most noble course of action is to be independent because i am still bound by choices prior and also if two black people form any sort of family on screen its disgusting and blasphemous so I might as well treat my father like my brother who i never was able to relate to when i was younger" THIS IS NOT MENTIONING THAT WYLL IS LITERALLY THE SON OF THE DUKE OF BALDURS GATE. HE GIVES UP HIS STATUS OF NOBILITY TO BE HEROIC AND IS JUST FOREVER CONTINUALLY PUNISHED. THE DUKE OF BALDURS GATE IS BRAINWASHED TO RELINQUISHING HIS TITLE AND CORONATES THE WHITE DEVIL EVIL DICK BAD GUY WHO SOLD KARLACH (TIEFLING) TO HELL FOR GIGGLES.

Karlach (tiefling) is a bright eyed noble hearted character that is looking for solace after having 10 years of her life taken from her when she got sold to devil and hell and made a war machine slave because thats perfectly tragic. Her heart is taken from her and replaced with an engine (machine) that is slowly killing her when she is not in Hell. THE ENGINE DOESNT EVEN HAVE A GOOD IN GAME MECHANIC, YOU GET TO SET URSELF ON FIRE TO GET A 'HEAT' DEBUFF THAT U CAN CONSUME ON AN ATTACK, you build heat any other way, so its like only <Lv. 4, and if you minmaxed the opening scene, you get a 2h sword that does this every attack, so like its a bit moot and useless. Furthermore i think its really stupid that shes yearning for companionship and yet is not allowed because her engine makes her to hot to touch. Which rubs me the wrong way as a black transfem (u could argue tiefling coded) because I already feel like that. I feel like im too intense and hot with my passions and i intimidate people to the point that I'm actively denying myself the intimacy i crave so dearly just by existing and expressing myself. The taxation of life shouldn't really exist in video games!! The whole party gets mind enslaving brainworms that magically dont work because the plot armor is really strong yet the demon character who EVEN WHEN THEY SEEK HELP IN THEIR COMPANION QUEST ARE DENIED THE REALITY OF LIVING COMFORTABLY BECAUSE THEY SHOULD ONLY EXIST IN HELL. (cried actually). Before the last of this mess, she offers to turn into a mindflayer just to give herself the peace that she could be the hero that saves the world (become the villain because its better than who you currently exist as, or die being yourself (who has LITERALLY BEEN DEMONIZED). Karlach doesn't get to have have a happy ending because she either dies from engine overdose or goes to hell just to fucking breathe. THE KICKER IS THAT WYLL, THE PERSON WHO WAS GOING TO KILL HER AS PART OF THE WARLOCK PACT, OFFERS TO ACCOMPANY HER IN HELL AND FIGHT BY HER SIDE. WHICH MEANS THAT ALL OF THE MARGINALIZED IDENTITIES EFFECTIVELY FUCK OFF AFTER YOU SAVE THE WORLD.

White victim Shadowheart has the option of rejecting what she knows (which was a lie told her) or believing it. The worst she has to do is kill a bound seraphim, and free her parents held captive by putting their souls to rest (she turns them into light, killing them). She gets sick weapons. Clerics are busted anyway.

White devil astarion got to ascend in pale supremacy and got cool vampire powers (bite+, bite++, buff on kill, and consume buff for heal || next hit crits). The final battle WAS BUGGED FOR ME. I WAS STUCK ON THE BOSS FIGHT FOR TWO WEEKS BECAUSE THE END OF BATTLE SCREEN WOULDNT LOAD. LIKE I MADE A WHOLE NOTHER CHARACTER BECAUSE I BEAT THE BOSS 7 TIMES AND MY BUGFIXED DIDNT WORK!!

if im gonna get so heated about video games i am just gonna go play bloodborne so i have no room to complain bc im constantly sucking

OKAY OKAY HERE

MY HOCUS POCUS HEADCANONS (about the Sanderson Sisters):

(I have to warn you, some of these are very specific in the sense that you might go ???? when reading them, but that’s on me and my autistic brain <3)

• First of all, the three of them are queer and neurodivergent because I am also queer and neurodivergent (also Sarah is so autistic coded actually).

Winifred is a transfem and aroace (probably straight), Mary is a cis ace lesbian and Sarah is a transfem non binary bisexual.

• Sarah smells like dirt (but like, in a petrichor kind of way y’know?), Mary smells like herbs and Winifred smells like smoke and the smell before a thunderstorm is about to happen.

• Sarah is left handed (like SJP <3) and Winifred and Mary are right handed.

• Mary has a second name and it’s Ann (like Kathy’s <3).

• The three of them have a mole on the palm of their right hand, same spot.

• I like to think that the three of them are actually redheads, only Mary has darker hair and Sarah dyes her hair (let’s. Let’s not get into the details of hair bleach back then shall we? Okay).

• Sarah learned Garden of Magic (aka Come Little Children as we all call it) from dreaming about the song for several years. She would find herself on the Forbidden Woods back again, this time alone, and she would hear the song from a distance. This dreams kept happening until she was 18.

• Mary is in charge of cutting everyone’s hair because she’s the most fit for this task. Winifred doesn’t have enough patience and Sarah is way too impulsive (she would definitely take the first sharp thing that she finds and call it a day no matter what the outcome is. It has happened before.)

• On that same note, Mary has a morning ritual of preparing a bath for herself with her favourite herbs and oils (and with bubbles too!!!) and relax for a bit. She also prepares baths for her sisters <3

• Mary is definitely the one that guides her sisters through modern times, considering she’s the one that grasps concepts faster. I like to think she accidentally found out about Hatsune Miku at some point and she showed her to her sisters.

• Oh, did I mention she would wear heelys? Yeah.

• Back to their neurodiversity for a moment. Both Sarah and Winnie canonically have ecolalia. Sarah’s manifests immediately (“AMOK, AMOK, AMOK”) while Winifred’s manifests when saying specific words (when she calls her sisters, or book. She always says it with the same intonation, which is one of the key points of ecolalia).

I do believe the three of them are autistic, and Sarah specifically has adhd as well. And they have stims and special interests:

Sarah mindlessly braids her hair and swings her arms. She fidgets with her rings when she’s upset. Her special interest is bugs (and how they taste), but specifically moths. She had pet moths at some point. (If you’ve seen that one comic I did of Sarah eating one of Winnie’s dresses… THIS is the explanation. She wanted to know what was all the fuss about).

Mary fidgets and flaps her hands, and chews her tongue as well. She also stims vocally. Her special interest is linguistics and literature (“You explained it beautifully, Winnie. I really liked the adventure part-“ and her getting words like “shis ka baby” or saying “cowabunga!”)

Winifred bites her lip, runs her tongue through her teeth or puts her hand on her face when she’s pensive. Her special interest is magic (obviously) and music. She assimilated I Put A Spell On You incredibly fast and she only heard it once.

• The three of them have perfect pitch.

• Winifred has insomnia. She sometimes wakes in the middle of the night (if she even falls asleep, that is) and tends to sit at the fireplace with a warm brew and Book. She either talks to him or studies the spells that lie within him.

• Because of her insomnia she also tends to toss and turn a lot, and even the smallest of disturbances can wake her up. Sarah, however, is the other way around. As soon as she falls asleep there’s no way to wake her up, not even if armageddon is happening. Mary is also a heavy sleeper, but if you insist a little bit she will wake up.

• Winifred is a spanish descendant. Like have you listened to her accent???? That’s exactly how I sound when I’m way too tired to make an effort on softening my accent.

• Winifred had to take care of her sisters from a very young age, considering their father died (and we don’t know anything about their mom but she’s most likely dead too, maybe giving birth to Sarah), which has its good and bad things.

One of the good things? Winifred inherited her father’s passion for storytelling (that’s why she’s such a great performer) and so she would tell bedtime stories to her sisters, especially when they were feeling gloomier than normal. She would let her sisters engage in the story, but only if Winifred asked them to. If any of them interrupted her she would get a little pissy about it.

As they got older and her sisters (especially Sarah) asked her to tell them a story, she would simply answer “Art thou not too old for that childish pastimes?”, but deep inside she has always missed it. Not only telling them stories, but just feeling safe enough to have such trivial moments with them.

• Mary is the one in charge of cooking, although Sarah is always helping her out. Winifred helps too but she’s more of a woman of chemistry with her potions and such.

• Sarah is an incredibly talented painter, but she doesn’t have the time nor the patience to sit and paint for long periods of time, so she just… doesn’t. However, when she does have time she enjoys painting sceneries (and secretly her sisters but she’s bringing that secret to the grave).

• Sarah is surprisingly book smart, specially about anatomy (both human and animal). She knows how any kind of anatomy works with such medical precision that it even surprises her sisters. She got that knowledge through doing autopsies (both to dead animals and... well, humans) when she was a kid (and older).

Alright so first off, I’m going to get this out of the way before going on a ramble thing for silver about personal headcanons- as its trans related headcanons and something i should say before getting into my own lol Silver the hedgehog, honestly as long as I’ve seen them has always *seemed* trans to me- canonly or not silver just seems like that one character that would be trans or at the very least gender non-conforming! Maybe it’s the personal connections playing into favoritism here as being trans myself however- Silver was born in a mostly dead future, as far as we known there’s no actual society of humanity left standing except the few survivors through the future ending events that led up to whatever kind of future silver originates from. A lot of gender related things are more so heavily ingrained in our society, male and female and so on- that’s likely. not really there. even if there was more humanity there than we ever see- why would that be what they’re worried about when fighting for their lives? The idea of gender is likely not that relevant to silver, it just feels right y’know? they grew up in a place where that just basically wasn’t a worry. coming to sonics present time, depending on how you view silver (because that’s the best part about fanbases! is different approaches to the same character and their identity!) they could have multiple reactions to that world around them! they could figure out actually, I do like this or I don’t like this- or this explains a lot and I didn’t know that was what gender dysphoria was! its limitless in that retrospect. Nonbinary silver, transmasc and transfem silver, the list goes on as tha’ts not all there is! At the VERY least despite there not being coding or anything in canon referencing to silver being trans or gender non-conforming it just feels right, in a way. Anyways! that little ramble aside! let’s get into personal headcanons for silver! in honor of her birthday, and also trans awareness week it felt like since I couldn’t push out art like I planned, I’d do this instead!

Silver headcanons revolving around her trans identity and how her emotions revolve around those feelings!

-Silver is a trans girl! using she/her but they/them aren’t a big deal to her! -Silver still isn’t afraid to be flexible in her gender identity either, androgynous, masculine all of the above! it doesn’t matter to her in the end because it didn’t matter when she came to the present! -”passing” is also not something that worries her, as long as shes happy with who she is and how shes expressing herself there its good enough. Once again, why would she worry about what silly gender norms may be around, where she grew up it didn’t even matter- though she is at least glad how being in the present helped her find a version of herself she was happiest with -Silver doesn’t have any major dysphoria relating to her gender identity- this is all purely because “it feels better, and it feels right to who I am.” and that is completely valid. Sometimes things just feel better, and it makes you feel more... you. Which is very important to this version of silver especially when relating to other headcanons/au’s of mine -(more detail on the previous statement) To put it lightly, silver struggles to find herself different from previous versions of herself. being aware of them through some ‘cycle’ or loop of sorts. Is she really her? or is she just another version of them? Her personal found comfort in her gender and pronouns helps a bit in that regard- she’s herself. she’s her. She’s silver! she may have a job to do, like all the others- and in some aspects are the same in personality and motives as past versions- but she’s still herself. it provides some comfort in it all. -It takes a bit to come to the realization of what she feels suits best, Afterall it’s a new feeling and an unexpected solution to an internal problem! but she does talk it out with people- even if in confused questioning that can sometimes be out of nowhere All in all, her gender revolves around making herself feel more like... her! what makes her happiest when shes around others and isnt afraid to be flexible with it! genders weird and she thinks confining stuff to masculine or feminine can be a bit much at times- she wants to be a girl and be free to do what she wants with it! shes defining herself as a person and saving the future as we know it.

Sometimes I still think about the whole Nezha thing in Warframe chat and how fucking awfully handled it was.

Like, sure, I understand how "trap" is a derogatory term to trans people. I am a victim of it as much as any other trans person, especially us transfems. You don't have to lecture me on that.

However, in that case in specific, just letting it go would be the best course of action by far. I understand it happened at the same time as that shitshow with chat moderation, but DE don't seem to have learned anything at all from that whole situation.

For starters, Nezha isn't trans. Nor is he trans coded. Nor is he anything related to trans people or trans culture at all. He's just a twink frame with everything you may want from a twink, down to the Hatsune Miku cosplay, and I'm not even joking on that one. Calling that thing a trap is like calling F1nnst3r a trap, if he was a video game character that doesn't actually exist.

Even as a character, Nezha portrays no characteristic of being trans, other than not conforming to the strict expectations of his assigned gender, which isn't even a trans thing, just a queer thing at best, if you really want to count it. In lore, he's just CPS if CPS killed child abusers on sight.

Honestly, the kind of demographic that I see calling him a trap first is exactly queer people. I understand if a moderator saw that back when it started to be a thing and started banning it on sight as a knee jerk reaction, and I won't judge it if it was you. It's a perfectly fine application of paranoid reading from a very oppressed group and I might have done the same if I lacked the foresight I have now. That moderator had no blame on the shitstorm that was about to come down.

The way Digital Extremes handled the situation afterwards, however, was very bad. After the bans began, it was a common troll to tell someone to say the four words on chat and watch as they go away for upwards of an entire month. It got to a point (in which we still are today), where the automod will ban you if you merely link [Nezha] and [Kinetic Syphon Trap] items in chat in the same message.

I want to make it clear again, that I am not criticizing the initial moment of the situation, but the company's follow up and lack of understanding of trans peoples' identities and expressions. Denying someone who calls themselves a trap or a trannie only leads to infighting and is a net loss for everyone but transphobes. If you say someone else can't be called a trap, what you're truly saying is that identifying oneself as a trap is invalid and can't be done. I wouldn't want to be called a trap, but if you do, I cannot say you can't be. You cannot deny my identity, just as much as I cannot deny yours, be that directly or through a fictional character.

Nezha, with his fictional character status, can't state his opinion in either way, so just saying "Nezha is a trap" is a very gray statement by itself. Without context, it means absolutely nothing, and doesn't warrant the vehemence in which it is punished by moderation. If this situation was well handled from the beginning, it wouldn't be even remembered as an incident, let alone have its own name and meme status. By lacking an understanding of what it means to be queer, they inadvertently denied a lot of people of their identities. Oopsie daisy.

I understand that, as individuals, Digital Extremes' employees do support trans rights and identities. Some of them are trans themselves, they create trans characters and portray queerness in very beautiful and meaningful ways. However, as a company, DE has a lot of growing to do if they truly want to support the LGBT++ and its community in general. Ever since its creation, Warframe is a game governed by whoever speaks the loudest, from serious issues like this one down to balance patches and the like. I wish transparency and communication were more important to their business model, but I am not working there and don't know their conditions, I can only say that as a queer player, not as a developer or employee.

sorry for my gerard and grant morrison autism rant but i need to talk about them. so the theme of gender through out gerard’s lyrics it really reminds me of grant morrison’s comics specifically doom patrol and the invisibles, some of my favorite pieces of art ever.

if you haven't read doom patrol its about a group of outsiders who are superheros and as grant said in their forward (im kind of paraphrasing but this is the vibe) this comic is for all the weird kids who relate more to robot men and people in bandages than actual people. so the autistics lmao. if you ever read doom patrol they just all read as autistic (soz but they do) and either trans coded or explicitly non cis or trans like rebis, essentially nonbinary (both male and female) god like superhero or danny the street a trans gay sentient street. im so obsessed. it has a lot of representation of the gay and transfem community. grant puts so much of themselves into their work they said if they haven't experienced they wont write about it and also gerard writes metaphorical stories but you know they are about real shit they went through. but i dont think they both realised, or maybe they did, how much their art is about not only the abstract idea of gender but their gender and using it as a space to experiment. but its not like doom patrol is about overtly the gender struggle or being nonbinary, (grant is out as nonbinary if you dont know) its about this superhero squad right but reading in 2022 god its quite obvious it is. like revenge is about a man who makes a deal with the devil to get make his female lover, but obviously its so much more about than just that.

when grant wrote a transfem character, lord fanny, into the invisibles they were like well i have to do drag now to know what its like! and the way gerard said they used their persona on stage to explore and express their femininity, perhaps not to full extent they wanted until the cheerleader outfit though i assume they would like to do more. but i just love thinking about how their art both gave them a space to explore who they were and their gender in a way they never thought they could really do in their lives before.

imagine gerard reading doom patrol and the invisibles as the issues were coming out and how much it must have meant to them as mcr means to us. i want to emphases how explicit the lgbt representation is and how its such a massive element of the comics you cant just make the characters cis and you wouldnt notice, you cant just make the gays straight by changing their pronouns. many characters are plots are about the lgbt experience, so may different experiences. i feel like no one recognizes them for the amazing lgbt fiction they are, and despite some of the language being a bit of date, the exploration of the queer themes still hold up today and honestly is better than a lot of mainstream representation we get (sorry but im kind of right).

i just have so many grant and gerard thoughts sorry i yet again could write so many essays about them i love them both so much.

Overall opinion

I love this gal! I love this gal! They really popped off with her in so many respects shdjdjd. I was talking to a friend about this earlier but her visual design as Batgirl is so cool, and to be honest the fact that it denies a clear face to perceive and leans so far into the blackness of it all makes her look way scarier than Bruce most of the time. As far as being an actual character, she’s got so many great things going on. Her run of Batgirl books was so good because it really hammered home real themes of abuse in a really vivid way, making her struggle with the ideas of violence and revenge and what it means to heal from all of that. She represents a really tough intersection of a hero who carries the baggage of serious trauma but whose trauma also makes her devoted to being against killing, and it’s something she has to struggle with. The idea that she “isn’t good enough” which was drilled into her from her own abuse and is carried over in the way she’s seen at times from her mentors in Batman and Oracle, wanting to live up to the image of the bat while struggling to fit herself into the idea of what it means to be that kind of hero. It’s all really good and really compelling.

Unfortunately Cass has the central problem of being a comic book character which means she tends to be written more or less gracefully depending on the writer. There’s an infamous incident of her being turned into a villain on a totally faulty premise because the author for that book hadn’t even read anything with her in it before and just thought it would be a cool twist. There’s also the fact that she, alongside Steph, were entirely erased from the continuity for the New 52 and had to eventually be brought back in a somewhat less graceful way than before. I like Rebirth Cass, but I’m still frustrated that they did away with her to begin with, creating another version of the character which would further complicate things.

One of the most standout elements for Cass to me is that struggling kindness. She’s a deeply, genuinely good person and her goodness shines through even the abuse and pain she’s suffered and her difficulty with social interactions and with communication. Despite fighting being all she knows she’s at her core a good person, wants to be good and to do good and to be kind. One of the central themes of her solo series was that she might not forgive her abusers, might hate them, but that she wants to be kind in spite of that, to be and to do better, and to keep moving forward and not to let them ruin her life any further. Her strong code against killing is one example of this, but it’s also just her attitude towards forgiveness and healing. She accepts Bruce as a father figure despite his flaws and red flags and returns to Babs despite some stuff she said that others could consider unforgivable. At her core she wants to just keep getting better and she’ll always take the path that does that the most, and it’s a really really powerful story to hear regarding abuse victims.

Gender / sexuality

Hahaha (*cracks my knuckles*). Now’s the time when I get to have my fun. Like all characters I enjoy I have waved my wand and casted the magic of trans ur gender and homo ur sexuality. I consider her a transfem character and like all my transfem HCs this is mostly cuz I want her to be trans but I found a pretty good after the fact justification for it which is that I think it further emphasizes the themes of rejecting your assigned role and choosing to be someone you want to be. Cass was assigned killer at birth and transitioned to a non-killer so she can also transition to a girl, right? Also she’s sapphic and kisses girls cuz I just think she should, she deserves it.

Favorite canon moment

Honestly, there are a lot of these depending on the continuity- the WFA 2-parter “All-Seeing” is fantastic for example- but from her solo series I wanna go with her fight against Bruce. This happens because after working together Bruce has begun to exhibit some red flags in his behavior, beginning to act in some ways like Cass’ biological father and he’s as aware of that as she is and is struggling with the need to be better for her and to be different. One of those themes of fatherhood that always gets me. But as that comes to a head, Bruce essentially lets himself be controlled by a villain to set up a fight between himself and Cass with neither holding back, both fighting each other earnestly, because both of them are very autistic and communicate better through their actions and through fighting than they ever could with words. It’s pretty heart-warming despite the premise, and it ends on a really touching note of him earnestly apologizing and promising to become a better father to her essentially, and her asserting that she isn’t loyal to him but to the idea of the bat itself.

Favorite fan work moment

I haven’t read any fan works with Cass in them yet sadly mostly because I think fanfic is daunting in general because of how hard it is to find good stuff and I think that feeling would only be massively amplified by the inherent continuity confusion and wildness of comic books. I’ll take suggestions tho dhdjfn.

Favorite line

I think I have to go with “I see too much, I can’t help it” from the aforementioned WFA 2-parter cuz that blew me away completely.

Characters I love seeing them interact with

Any of the Batfamily I think, but in particular her best friendship with Steph is extremely fun to see and super cute, her father-daughter dynamic with Bruce is great, I think she and Jason have a lot in common and would get along, and her looking up to Babs as a role model is a lot of fun too. As far as non-Batman characters I think she and Jaime Reyes (the Blue Beetle) should hang out.

Last thing before bed

So it’s basically confirmed that all the Batfam is nocturnal so she presumably sleeps during the day which is great. I think both because of her natural attitude and the fact that it’s bright outside when she goes to sleep she probably has a hard time getting to bed and dealing with like, everything calming down to that point, she’s probably pretty energetic up until then, so I think she likes it if she can get one of her siblings or Bruce or Alfred to just talk to her for a bit, to help her wind down and get comfortable. This is also why I think she doesn’t use her own room that much and has a habit of falling asleep in random places around the manor.

Sleeping habits

I think she absolutely tosses and turns something fierce and is prone to nightmares. Luckily she’s got the resources to reach out to if they’re really traumatic and a big house with lots of snacks to swipe if she wakes up. I think she probably eventually gets pretty used to waking up and going back to sleep so her schedule is usually more like a lot of naps throughout the day. Which is also why she sleeps in tons of different weird locations. So you can never find Cass around the house, but you can be somewhat sure of when she’s asleep. She just might be like. Asleep in a closet somewhere.

First thing after waking up

Again, because of her unique sleep schedule and everything, I think she wakes up a lot, but once she wakes up for the last time before showtime I think she probably takes the time to get a really big, proper meal and lets herself really fill up before she starts getting properly ready for patrol and tackling any cases. Probably after eating she takes the time to wake up her body fully with exercises and stuff before taking care of everything else.

Favorite location

I think she really does feel at home in the manor and enjoys all the different nooks and crannies she can carve out for herself, little private spaces that nobody knows about except her and Alfred. Places that are calm and quiet where she doesn’t have to worry about being overwhelmed by the chaos of everything, the overwhelming sensory issues she often experiences when she goes out into the world. Someplace just for her, and whoever she chooses to let in.
