So in Undertale the player isn’t Frisk. The player is the soul. The soul is the source of Frisk’s determination, and WE give them that as we are the ones controlling the game, continuing it because of our determination.
Even for menus, the soul is what we use to do everything. So we ARE the soul, we aren’t Frisk or even Chara, we’re just the soul itself.
As the soul, we control if Frisk does Pacifist or Genocide or Neutral. When we sell the soul to Chara post-Genocide, we still have more determination so we still control the soul if we go back and play True Pacifist. But once we’ve finished the game then Chara takes control.
And I mean we’re clearly the soul in Deltarune for obvious reasons.
Main point the player isn’t the same as Frisk or Chara, they aren’t one singular character in the game. They are simply the soul. And in Deltarune, obviously we are not Kris (chapter 1 end scene).

i've noticed there's a slight problem on ao3 of people tagging undertale fanfics as deltarune when there's. literally no deltarune aspects. or only a couple here and there. i feel like that should probably be reserved for undertale fanfics that prominently feature deltarune characters/are a full-on crossover-

* Prologue
There used to be a child, one named Chara. Chara was an unhappy child, growing up in a bad family. At seven years old, they decided they had enough. They climbed Mount Ebott, and they jumped in a deep hole they found inside. They started plummeting to their death.
Tumblr media
Or, so they thought. No, they did not die. In fact, they were mostly unharmed, it was a miracle! But not for them. They wanted to leave this plane of existence, their plan failed. They fell into the Underground. Someone heard them hit the flowers below.
Tumblr media
It was a little goat boy. His name was Asriel Dreemurr. He was also seven at the time. He wondered what the noise was, so he investigated. Finding an injured human, he nearly panicked. He rushed to their side.
Tumblr media
Then, with the Surface light basking them both, he helped them onto their feet. He took them to the safety of his home. There, Chara grew fond of the monsters. They loved them more than they ever did to humans. This one, was actually a miracle.
Tumblr media
They heard the tales of monsterkind. They grew saddened by all the monsters lost. They grew up in the underground. A near case of manslaughter and six years was howwhat it took them to make a plan. They were thirteen then.
Tumblr media
They dicussed their plan with their brother, Asriel. They would eat buttercups, they would die, he would absorb their soul. The little goat boy was immeadiately worried, were they going to die then? He asked. They confirmed, yes they would. He began to cry, they asked him if he was crying; now worried. He denied it, he agreed to the plan. They felt bad. They set the plan into motion. They failed They died. Monsters moved on, it took years for another human to fall.
Tumblr media
They needed seven to break the barrier. They had seven, counting Chara's mostly shattered one. That wouldn't do. They needed a seventh. And eventually, a seventh human fell down.
Tumblr media
A human by the name frisk. A homicidal child. They started to kill everything in their way. They could come back after death, there were no consequences.
Tumblr media
They grabbed their nearest weapon, and slashed at the monsters. One, by, one, they died. Fruitless efforts to end them occurred. They won, they killed while Chara helplessly watched; attached to Frisk's soul and unable to leave. Their mother, and a horde of monsters they'd never met but felt immensely bad for. Until, something began to eat at them. They liked to call this thing, Hatred. It consumed them, in the form of LV and EXP. They lost their mind. They made a deal with Frisk. A deal with the Devil. Their soul was taken in exchange for restoring the world.
Tumblr media
RESET. That was what they did. They went through the Underground again, sparing and befriending everyone. Hatred had not completely let go of Chara until their brother re-appeared. Frisk fought valiantly, they died. And they refused. Re-fused. They came back, and they shattered the barrier. They set the monsters free. They stayed with Toriel, much to Chara's content. But Chara still technically owned their soul. So they took over, one night. A murderer such as Frisk did not deserve all these good monsters. They were not above consequences. This was Karma getting back at them. The consequences of their actions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so, they were back.
Chara is now open to Asks.

I left his arms empty and tied, outstretched for me until he died
Here I am alive and I don’t have the right
~
Frisk knew why Papyrus hesitated to hug them, even if he didn’t fully understand it himself. It was the very same reason they hesitated to hug Sans, wavered at the sight of his open arms and his empty smile and his all-too-inviting “C’mere, pal.”
A part of them expected (perhaps wished for) shards of bone to plow through them again; all they could do was brace for it as Sans’ fingers curled over their back and squeezed.

The stars, the night, the last candle light bled in from under the blue-hued bedroom door. The old oak wood, the new cotton carpet already steeped with the smell of smoke, the whimsical sort, breathed from an extraordinary flame. The butterscotch and cinnamon. The scent of hope, of a happy ending, a better beginning, wasn’t so supernatural.
It opened the child’s eyes; the pretense of being fast asleep fell fast away at an hour when all good things should slumber safely.
“My child, why do you wake?” The kindly monster inquired softly, rising to greet the shadow crossing the threshold of her room.
“To ensure you are resting, dear mother.” The child replied.
Which was a most peculiar thing to say.
But a mother isn’t fooled so quickly, and she thinks of the pie still cooling on the stovetop, that sort that human children might eat with naked hands. Frisk isn’t like that, she forgets, and gets out of bed.
“If you want another slice, that fine, little one, but no more after that, alright?”
She slips past but no further. For a tiny hand grasps the back of her night gown, a silent plea to stop and turn. But when she does, something cold and sharp pierces straight through her heart. Because it isn’t her child standing there but her child, looking up with shining eyes that shouldn’t be more than a memory.
“Chara.” She whispers. “You came home.”
With trembling hands, she touches it’s flushed cheek, ignoring the feeling that she is falling apart, until a breeze from an open window blows the rest of her away.
It watches her go, and inhales in the corrupted air of victory like a drug. It tastes like dust, it feels like LOVE. That’s what all pleasant dreams really are.
It revels, it laughs, it’s so funny, it can’t stop. The nightmare overstays its welcome past dawn, morning, noon. Only well into the evening, does the comedy end, with a knock on the cottage door.
When it’s night again, on their favorite picture, it marks a red x on it’s mother’s face.

“UNDERTALE is a game that teaches you your own consequences, regardless of which run you play. Choose anyone, and they could be the villain. ASGORE, Flowey, Undyne, Sans, Frisk, even Chara… but in the end, the only villain is you. And that’s the only game I’ve ever seen that does that.”
-a review of undertale on kickstarter, which perfectly describes it.

Undertale x Deltarune Theory: Chara, Frisk & Kris came from The Same Soul From Fragmentation...and The True Pacifist Ending Is a Anomaly
[Note: Do Not Reblog Without Permission.]
this is just a theory, but I believe that Chara might not really be the True Fallen Human, just a fragment soul born from the Original Human that fell into the underground who shares the same appearance as the human in the opening and flashbacks in the game, as well as with Kris.
Chara might not be the only one who was born from the original human who fell into the underground, Kris and Frisk might be as well.
and yes, I believe that while the Queen Toriel Ending, might very well be the true ending, and if you go back to your save like Flowey says and reload it back to where you are outside of the room where you face the king, and you could turn back and end up going to the place where the whole Undyne finally calls you happens, which if I knew that could happen during a reload, I wouldn’t of reset to the very start of the game...
anyway while the Monsters being free from the underground is good, but it is also ends up being a Anomaly, if you make sure to befriend Papyrus, Undyne and a few others, and if you do try to go back to trigger the call from Undyne, it sadly wont happen at first, and you will have to face King Asgore anyway, despite wanting to try to hook Undyne and Alphys up, and this can only happen if you reload from where you last save before fighting Asgore, meaning you didn’t have to reset at all this whole freaking time. O_O
while we do love the true pacifist happy ending in Undertale, it is sadly a Anomaly Ending, well I believe so.
it’s possible that the Queen Toriel Ending in the game, might be the True Timeline, and it might still exist even if the red soul of the Player were to jump from that timeline to the one where we free all the monsters.
and when we do end up in the true lab, and find that very large “mirror”, it isn’t just a mirror, it is a glass that sees through to where the Other Frisk from the Queen Toriel Timeline, is being kept.
this would mean that version of Frisk, didn’t leave the underground, and because the two timelines are connected, the Frisk from the Anomaly Timeline aka True Pacifist Timeline, doesn’t just go down the elevator to the true lab of the Anomaly Timeline, they end up in the Queen Toriel Timeline one.
only when they go through the elevator once more, and to where the generator is,that end up back in the Anomaly Timeline with the version of Alphys who lives in that Anomaly/True Pacifist Timeline, and it is the Alphys from the Queen Toriel Timeline that kidnap Frisk and took them to the true lab after the player’s red soul leaves their body and ends up in past version of themself that would be from the Anomaly Timeline.
while some parts of the true lab in both timelines might share some similarities,
but in the True Pacifist Timeline (that is also the Anomaly Timeline), Alphys doesn’t kidnap Frisk and lock them up behind a glass in the true lab.
and that version of Frisk, who we end up leaving behind in that Queen Toriel Timeline, even if unknowingly...
ends up becoming a test subject for that version of Alphys, who might very well can no longer be redeemed because her experiments might of been the reason why that version of Frisk, could go on a Geno Route.
that version of Frisk might of found a way to escape the True Lab, by breaking the glass and finding a machine that could take them back in time or at least to a different timeline, which would be The Anomaly Timeline, to the point where they are outside of the room where they are suppose to fight Asgore.
and if that version of Frisk were to do a Reset, they might end up creating a another Anomaly Timeline, even if the True Pacifist Timeline still exist.
plus it could be possible that before the Player’s Red Soul was placed in Frisk, they had possibly already went through heck when they first went into the underground, and at some point had enough and decided to show no mercy to the monsters...
which would explain if we choose to name the Fallen Human “Frisk”, it shows some interesting words...
this could mean that before the Player comes along, Frisk had possibly went through a Geno Route before and might turn out to not have a soul, but a hollow-soul instead.
like I had said before about this theory and it’s my fan headcanon as well.
a hollow-soul is heart shaped and might not only be in red, but could be in different colors for all we know, and well it is heart shaped but it has no filling in the center, this means that it is soulless, while it appears like a normal soul, it isn’t, because it is a hollow-soul.
the good part of Frisk that makes up a fragment soul, is possibly with the player’s red soul, and even if we do end up giving them a happy ending, and do as Flowey says that let them live their life and be happy.
maybe the red soul that is still in Frisk even after we get a happy ending, might end up bonding to them and causing that version of Frisk to have a full soul again.
in one of my new offline accounts, I made it so that Frisk and all the monsters get their happy ending and are free, and would not experience another reset, cause the one where the fallen human was named “Frisk” was enough.
that and the reloading save file in the game.
I like to think that they are just living happy in the true pacifist/anomaly timeline that is in the Nintendo Switch.
I can still play the game on my other offline accounts and even my non-offline one, but if I do play on that other one that has the true pacifist happy ending in it from Undertale, I’m not gonna play Undertale on that again, because I’m having the characters in the game have a true and permanent happy ending and not end up going back to the underground.
and I know that in that timeline, I didn’t have Frisk flirt with Toriel or date Papyrus, well technically in both the Queen Toriel Timeline/True Timeline and the True Pacifist/Anomaly Timeline.
anyway all Frisk did from that new game timeline, was befriend and hang out with Papyrus, and only called Toriel “Mom”...
and in the end, I had Frisk stay with Toriel.
and I guess depending how you played the game, the man from the other world, could mean Sans from the Queen Toriel Timeline.
he could very well be “the man who speaks in hands...”
the first human who was adopted by Asgore and Toriel, and became The Original Prince Asriel’s sibling, ended up having their soul fragmenting into different pieces.
each of the new fallen humans, are possibly made up of those parts, but are in different colors instead of just red.
but it could just be Frisk, Kris and Chara who are fragments from the Original Human who was named Chara or [Redact]/Player’s Choice.
Kris making up one of those fragments, ended up being reborn in the world of Deltarune, and was adopted by another version of their family, where Asriel is alive and much older than them.
and we know that Kris is nonbinary, and I guess depending on the player, some could view them as either a nonbinary who goes by only they/them,
or like a nonbinary-boy who goes by both they/them & he/him, or like a nonbinary-girl who goes by they/them & she/her.
I guess I wouldn’t mind viewing the Kris I play as in Deltarune, as being a Enbirl.
like there could be a Nonbinary-Boy Frisk and a Nonbinary-Girl Chara, like calling them a boy or girl, or like Enboy or Enbirl, and using both they/them and she/her as well as him/he to them, they might not mind.
but call them “Male” or “Female” and that would be misgendering them...
I guess it might be confusing, but we know that while the Gems from Steven Universe do appear “female”, they are more of Feminine and they are sexless.
we know that some versions of Frisk, Chara and Kris, are either just a Boy or Girl or Agender or Nonbinary.
but we could also view some versions of them being either a Enboy or Enbirl.
a Nonbinary-Girl could still be called a girl, but also be called enbirl, but it might be possible that not many would do that, I mean I don’t think I mind being called a enbirl, but that wouldn’t mean everyone would feel the same.
if the Original Fallen Human, let’s call them The Original-Chara...
had reached a breaking point where their soul fragmented, it might be possible a small piece of it stayed with The Original Asriel’s dust and that fragment and that dust make up Flowey, might seem like he is soulless, but he might in fact have a small red fragment of The Original-Chara’s Soul.
even if one of the fragments of Chara has took up their name (or the name that the Player gives the Original-Chara), they are possibly not the Original-Chara...
like the Original Prince Asriel, they are gone....
like picture it like how Pink-Steven says that Pink Diamond is gone, and at some point yells it at White Diamond.
even if both Chara and Flowey have no idea that their original selves are gone, they still believe they are fully them, but really they are made up of fragments of who they use to be but also being different from them.
Chara could of been born from both The Original Asriel’s dust just as Flowey was....
and while The Original Prince Asriel is gone, his body could of very well regenerated, but as a hollow-soul that is full of their dead sibling’s determination, which was left behind when their human soul ended up shattered.
while there are different versions of Riverperson, I believe that the Riverperson in the main timeline, like in the True Pacifist/Anomaly Timeline and the Queen Toriel/True Timeline, the Riverperson is technically The Original Asriel, but without a soul and is just full of determination that was left over after their sibling’s soul had shattered and fragmented, leaving nothing of their old self left.
even if the Riverperson does help the Player, they might still be what is left of the Original Asriel, and could be that Other Ralsei.
I still think that the True Ralsei is the one that Kris first goes on that adventure with to the Card Kingdom, and while the hooded figure could of started out as the Other Ralsei, the one we befriend might of switch places with him, because the True Ralsei asked him to, and might of gave him extra clothes that look like the ones he wears and put some of his essence magic in to make them transform into his likeness and appear and sound like him.
a version of Flowey, who could be from The Queen Toriel Timeline, might of ended up in Deltarune before Kris and Susie fell to the dark world.
and Flowey could of befriended the True Ralsei, and that Ralsei would trust Flowey to protect the lightners from the Other Ralsei.
but when Susie was busy trying to save Kris from King, this gave the Other Ralsei a chance to switch places with Flowey/Body-Double Ralsei.
Other-Ralsei took the hat and clothes that the True-Ralsei gave Flowey, and hid them, and he could of possible threw Flowey in the place where Jevil was locked up.
and Other-Ralsei could of been secretly following Kris and Flowey/”Ralsei” the whole time, even when they met up with Susie.
the reason why that coat-rack darkner has Ralsei’s hat on, is because the Other-Ralsei is keeping it there because it is infused with the True-Ralsei’s magic that let’s Flowey become Ralsei.
Other-Ralsei has the True-Ralsei locked up somewhere in Castle Town, and since True-Ralsei wouldn’t be able to protect Kris and Susie, they trust Flowey with the job and places some of their magic into some extra clothes and hat they have and gives them to Flowey.
in Ralsei form, Flowey could look like a perfect copy of the True-Ralsei...
while the Other-Ralsei does not, because one, The Other-Ralsei has longer horns, is slightly taller and has bigger feet than the True-Ralsei who has smaller horns, smaller feet and seems to be a little shorter and maybe around Kris’s height.
when Kris and Susie are about to leave for the light world in Chapter 1,
Other-Ralsei might of had time to throw Flowey in the same place that Jevil is in, and then go to the big door that Ralsei/Flowey and Kris went through, and went through it and then locked it, and then go to the light world and lock the door that is inside the unused classroom...
this would keep Kris and Susie from finding out the truth, cause if both are closed, this would mean t hat Kris and Susie can’t go back to Card Kingdom and find out the Ralsei with them is a fake and the one that was left behind in Card Kingdom, was acting as a double for the True-Ralsei, to protect them from the Other-Ralsei.
even if both Undertale and Deltarune are two different timelines and worlds, with different outcomes and experiences, it doesn’t mean it’s not possible for each person from the two worlds, not to end up going to each other’s world.
there could also be a third world, where a in-game Player who plays both games of the world, lives at.
we are the Players outside the game, while the in-game Player is the one who lives in a world that is between those two worlds and viewing it as just a game, but where they are from, it is very much real, even if they don’t know it.
there can be many different theories about the timelines of Undertale, but it could still be possible that True Pacifist Ending, might be a Anomaly Timeline.
and the True Timeline is the Queen Toriel Timeline.
the King Papyrus, Queen Alphys, Queen Undyne and King Mettaton timelines, might only end up happening in not fully geno and neutral runs.
The Pacifist Queen Toriel Timeline, might be the True Timeline.
it might be possible that Toriel from the Queen Toriel Timeline, might of been using us the Player and Frisk, the whole time to overthrow her ex-husband...
but only the Anomaly Timeline version of herself has a change of heart, and decides to stop the fight before anyone gets hurt...
she doesn’t do this in the other timelines, only in a True Pacifist Timeline, which is the Anomaly Timeline, but the Anomaly Timeline might be a good thing, the monsters are free and happy, but the original and true timeline where Toriel is Queen would always exist even as the timeline where the monsters are free and Frisk is living with their new Mom Toriel, is living happy and not being forced back into the underground because of the reset.
in the Anomaly Timeline, Toriel might of never went through with the thoughts or even had the thought pass through her mind, to use Frisk to get rid of her ex-husband, this might be because of when the save is reloaded, it alters that timeline just a little to be different from the original true timeline that is the Queen Toriel Timeline.
if those two versions of Toriel ever met, and Queen Toriel admits to using Frisk to get rid of King Asgore, this could cause the Toriel from the Anomaly/True Pacifist Timeline to get really upset and maybe even slap Queen Toriel.
and then there is the whole Original Vessel Frisk who was suppose to leave the underground, but ends up being left behind by the Player when we take the red soul and end up in the Anomaly Timeline...
if Queen Toriel didn’t know that Frisk was locked up behind some large class in the true lab, then she might end up finding out in some point and start to question her timeline’s Alphys as to why she should keep such a big secret from them and why she didn’t simply let them leave the underground.
like even if she did use them, she could still feel some form of guilt and might of not wished for them to be used in experiments that would be a way to see if it will end up freeing all monsters from the underground.
but that Frisk, the one that Queen Toriel had used and ends up feeling guilt over, doesn’t have a soul, they are only left with what appears like a normal soul, but it has no filling in the middle and is heart shaped hole, and is called a Hollow-Soul.
the one who has the red soul, is the Frisk in the Anomaly/True Pacifist Ending Timeline, and could possibly keep it if the Player just let’s them be.
the red soul, could be part of the soul fragment from the Original-Chara who is gone and never coming back, no matter how much Flowey or The Original Asriel want them to come back to them, but all there is let are the fragments that make up Chara who has taken the Original’s name, and might not know they are a fragment of the Original, then there is Frisk and Kris.
Frisk could turn out to be the Original-Chara’s body, that was kept preserved by the magic bandages that was around their body and because they normally had their eyes covered, no one had recognized them because their bangs were somehow cut.
this could mean that they never went through a Geno Route before the Player came along, and had been Soulless the whole time, and when the Red Soul that also has a good Frisk fragment soul to it, ends up in the soulless Frisk, it gives them a soul but also has them share control of their body with the Player.
even if the Player can move Frisk through the underground, they still are able to move by themself, like to hide behind the lamp or follow Papyrus around really fast until they get back to in front of his and Sans’s shared home.
even if their True Name was Chara, their original self is still gone, because their original soul ended up fully breaking into many pieces.
Frisk could be the name they chosen for themselves (while they still have the red soul that comes from the Player), for a fresh start, since their parents and brother has no clue who they are because they never saw them without their bangs covering their eyes.
there could be different mysterious about Frisk and Chara that we haven’t figured out yet, same goes for Kris.
and in some timelines, like in the Fanon AU Timelines, Frisk and Chara are two separate beings, but could of once been one in the same in another timeline, they use to be one in the same until their original self had their soul break into many pieces until there was nothing left of the original soul, which means that the Original them is gone for good.
anyway I don’t really have anything much to say that has to do with Frisk, Chara and Kris being parts of The Original-Chara.
when Frisk has the Red Soul in them, even if it might turn out it’s not their original soul and it becomes fused with their hollow-soul, they might have memories about their past before they were brought back to life by the Player’s Proxy Red Soul.
Frisk might of been Original-Chara’s body, but them having a new soul might be in a way, them being reborn as a different person...
it’s possible that their family that makes up Asgore, Toriel and The Original Asriel...
might of never seen their eyes and only know what they look like from how they had their eyes covered by their bangs, but without their bangs covering their eyes, they seem like a different person to them.
and maybe I can think about why The Original-Chara’s soul had fragmented and shattered and leaving nothing left of their original soul save for a heart shaped soulless/hollow-soul.
but I can think about and post about that another time...

All the comics and stuff is fun, but I feel like post genocide Frisk would mostly get nightmares of being reminded constantly, sometimes twice in one room, that something made them kill EVERYTHING
...
I watched a video essay and now I have brain worms

Ya know, Undertale has what people call the soulless pacifist ending, which takes place after completing a genocide route, and then doing a pacifist run.
Same as regular pacifist ending, minus the cool credits, and Chara takes over Frisk's body.
Very creepy stuff.
Now I always wished this concept of soulless pacifism went beyond just a slightly different ending, and was like it's own whole route.
Now, here's the big question...
What would that look like?
The first story arc of Fatal Theories will touch on the missed potential of this concept, plus several other unique concepts, and maybe even a few AU's.
We hope to complete many concepts undertale touched on, but never fleshed out, and also show our appreciation for the many cool concepts other people have come up with over the years!

What are the salient features of Asriel, post-canon, that keep us from "saving" him from life alone in the Underground?
He's soulless (a practical problem),
he'll soon return to being a flower (a practical problem) and would prefer that you think of him like this rather than Flowey (a personal and interpersonal problem), and
he's decided to stay and tend the grave of the fallen child (and this is not really a problem at all; rather, a decision, which the boundary conditions of Undertale require us to respect).
There is a lot of UT post-canon fic out there which treats all these as practical problems. Frisk can just get a soul from somewhere, throw Alphys technobabble or soul arcanobabble at the body issue; get Flowey in therapy; and... also get Flowey in therapy for that last one, because his decision isn't really legitimate, in save-the-goat stories. It's self-harm. Which, personally, is both understandable and missing the point of one of the game's core themes: no matter how many times you restart the story, there are things you can't do; you are not getting a 100% Complete Perfect Pacifist where even Asriel is saved, and it's okay to be wistful about it, but you still need to put down the controller eventually. Getting him to the surface happens a lot in fic, because we all want the goldenest ending, but it could never happen in canon and we just have to live with it. It's thematically potent and I'd lose a lot of respect for Undertale's commitment to its story if you could circumvent it.
(Incidentally, this feels to me like it stems from the same ideas as making "* I have places to be" the wrong answer, a giving-in to Frisk's self-sacrificing, self-disregarding nature which must be corrected. Sometimes, you have to let people live and make their own decisions, outside the boundaries of the story's frame. Your perspective only goes so far.)
...now, fluffier, more sympathetically-traumatized Asriel, on the other hand...!
Ralsei's woes in Deltarune are very visibly the same kind of isolation as what Asriel's dealing with at the end of Undertale, but a) it's worse (a whole lifetime of waiting in a very deliberately empty, lifeless, three-screen-long kingdom) and b) he's stuck there for purely practical reasons. Darkners can't enter the Light World without becoming objects. He never made a decision to be here.
It's not something we can technobabble our way out of right now, but we're only in Chapter 2, right? We can save him, in a way we can't save Asriel: the deadlock we can't resolve has been removed; we don't really have to think about his preferences any more, because the preferences that kept us from helping him and left him stuck in the Underground I mean Dark World are just gone.
His issues are also much more obvious from the get-go, and seem designed to be something we talk him out of – not Asriel's decision to stay by his lost friend's grave, with a weight of meaning and feeling behind it, but hero worship, subservience, religious dedication to the Prophecy and self-image issues, all clear and visible dysfunctions. Giving Asriel therapy has left the realm of fanfiction and wish fulfillment and become part of canon... and the real disagreements we had with UT!Asriel over what he was and meant and deserved have become simple roadblocks for DR!Asriel whoops I mean Ralsei, things we have to help him through. Practical problems where the solution is friendship speech + therapy.
To make a slightly heavy-handed comparison, Ralsei saying we exist to serve Lightners and gratefully referring to himself as Kris's lackey is Anthy saying I'm the Rose Bride because I like it. It's the kind of reason we're inclined to reflexively overrule without working to deal with it at its root. Ralsei is Asriel, minus the irreconcilable and bittersweet parts, someone whose objections to being helped have either been removed or simplified down until we can feel good about disabusing him of them. He's our wish fulfillment in the way that candy on trees might be Susie's and a city of shining lights might be Noelle's and Giant Arcade Consoles might be Berdly's: an Asriel you can help, who you can make go to therapy and deal with the problems that keep him from caring for himself; who'll shut up, comply and let himself be saved.
...so the fact that Kris – whose personal issues are opaque, complex, and frustrating; who appears to be actively hiding parts of their life and motives from us; who clearly doesn't want our help or an improved social life at the expense of their agency – finds him so distasteful might not just be because he's a parody of their brother or Secretly Evil or whatever. If Ralsei is "the kid they're supposed to be" it's not just his fluff and horns!

So, uh. How's being alive again?
"It is.. hard to believe," Chara mumbles, the view of them is a side-view. There are tears streaming down their face, they look in shock. Their mouth is left agape, but they soon close it. They swallow, brows furrowing as they clench the sheets in their hands. They seem in thought, before letting out a quiet 'wait,,'.
Their eyes shift towards the side, where the view of them is facing, and stare at where the voice was presumably coming from. There is nothing there as they look, but they seem surprised for a moment.
The shock wears off quickly, though. They look apologetic as they let go of the blanket and bring the sleeve of their sweater — Frisk's sweater — to their face. They wipe the tears off one side before speaking.
"My apologies," They say, turning their head to face the side.
They wipe at their other eye absentmindedly, the tears staining the fabric to a slightly darker blue.
"I did not know that there was someone here," They follow it up with, smiling somberly.

If the Player decides to do one run, True Pacifist, and leave it at that, without resetting ever, four people still would not get a happy ending.
Asriel, trapped as a soulless flower until he dies.
Chara, presumably forced to follow Frisk in ghost form until Frisk dies.
W.D. Gaster, shattered across space and time.
...
...And the Player, cut off from being in the world of Undertale forever.
