Bubby I must know your drawing and/or colouring process! Could you share a speed paint please?
I usually photobash to make references, and then draw on top of them so I can check the ref easier (I don’t like glancing back and forth, you can see in the beginning where I draw over top of the reference but I don’t follow the lines of it - it’s mostly to help me with visualization!)
My process (for stuff that’s more than just a doodle) goes:
loosely sketch out the general shape
More firmed up sketch/cleaning up
Outline in black on layer below & fill in, use that as my ref layer so I don’t have to worry about colour getting outside the lines (makes it faster for me)
Block In real colours
Block in textures
(Optional)
Add shading (I cell shade, with some airbrushing for details like shines where necessary, and soft gradients)
Add bg (I usually find a free use image off google since I’m not a fan of drawing bgs (take too long I move FAST), and I add a gradient on top of the final art that’s a blurry vers of the bg, to make all the colours harmonize (it makes it look like the character is really in the space!)

Do you have any video tutorial on how one can use unreal engine for bg??
No, I'm a complete amateur and it takes me 5+ hours to create an useable scene through trial and error. My advice is to just watch tons of tutorial videos on YT, and after that maybe learn something about photobashing. I didn't do the latter and it shows.

I FINALLY FINISHED IT!!!!!!!! (about three months late lmao)
I'll probably keep my ramblings short today because my brain's fried. (mostly burnout from school, but also I'm still processing the Rolling With Difficulty finale)
Decided to play around with some photomanipulation techniques I've been experimenting with. I swallowed my pride and finally downloaded photoshop since Krita's photomanipulation tools were acting funky (and that's not what Krita's designed to to anyhow)
I wanted to push the exaggerated nature of the pose in the shapes of the body, idk how successful I was. But I did play with simplifying the candles with good ole poly-lasso tool, which was nice.
I also decided to push the "camera" even more, using a canted angle on top of the super distorted pose. I played around with warping the bg into a fisheye effect, but that wasn't super successful. I think I'd have to plan that out more concretely if I really wanted it.
I also used a different approach to colour: blocking in values in greyscale then using a gradient map and some masking layers to throw some color back in. It's still super desaturated, but I think I'm satisfied with it, I think it fits with the mood of the piece.
I feel like there are still things I could "fix" with it. But I don't want this sitting in my to-dos for another three months lol. And for the most part, I am satisfied and happy with the photobashed effects, the smoke and mirrors are doing what I want them to.

Consummation Proof of Concept: Mid-June Art Devlog
As we hit the midway point of June, Battle Action Fantasy VN Jam (a.k.a. BAF Jam, which I am helping to cohost) is also halfway in!
I’m working on a proof of concept demo of Consummation ~wind above the dragon sea~, a yuri action fantasy visual novel, for the jam.

At the moment, the demo script is fully written at approximately 12k words and other assets are in progress.
The Consummation prototype is a solo development endeavor, so my entry to BAF Jam will be a combination of online assets and my own output. It’s been quite a while since I last solo dev-ed a game, having led teams as director, scenario writer, and character designer for my last two projects (Who is the Red Queen?, Lachesis or Atropos).
However, I prefer not to ask someone to create assets that would be scrapped and redone in the scenario that the game is elevated from prototype to active (likely commercial due to scope) project. Thus, here we are. Jack of most trades shino is on the scene.
Let’s talk about the art!
sprites
Sprites progress: ~80%
Spites are almost done! Line art is complete as is flat coloring, but I’ll have to play around with the palettes and actually render my girls.
The sprites for the demo are drawn waist up with a white outline around them. Originally, I wondered if I could get away with only flats and no rendering, but it didn’t quite match with the background assets I had.

The sprites are displayed to the right, a locational cut-in to the left if applicable, inspired by what you might call the Liar-soft Steampunk style. It’s efficient for a one man team, especially one who is not an environment artist.
(I find that there’s 2 main sides of visual novel staging: comic style and anime style, with the use of cut-ins taking advantage of how comics build mental images of scenes within their readers minds through overlapping frames—but I won’t go rambling about that for now…)
photobashing
Backgrounds progress: 100%
Backgrounds are just about all gathered.
The majority of the backgrounds in the game will be from asset packs, sources to be listed on the game page when published. Alas, as is the case always, some locations are hard to find in those packs!
Hence, I did some photobashing for a handful of places. That is to say, finding some photos on Unsplash and editing them in an image editing software, such as GIMP, to create another image.
Use the clone tool to edit out unwanted elements, overlay lots of blue, and put the image through a variety of filters such as blur, oilify, mosiac, and others until satisfied.

The end result is workable as a temporary asset in a prototype game… Rinse and repeat as needed.
I may occasionally smash up some photos as placeholders, but you probably won’t see me doing BGs often aside from the rare solo dev game where I can’t find a separate asset for a location.

CGs progress: ~10%
Not much to say here; CGs are all still in the sketch phase, so I’ll just go ahead and show you a sneak peek of the first CG:

Some changes to the progress: Comic Updates moving forward

So, I had some thoughts.
Setting up the thumbnail, then the 3d, paneling and text- all is very time consuming. As for bgs- it loses consistency if I only work on one episode at a time, since linearting, flatting, and adding effects doubles that time, and I’m very tired every time I’ve finished an episode lately. One set of tasks is very different from the other.
From now on, I’m just gonna set up every chapter beforehand, that might change how I manage energy and how quickly I can get something done.
I was really lucky last year that I had enough energy to finish several in a month, but because its flippyfloppy energy right now- my energy for different tasks variates, so this might end up making the progress easier- as well as more consistent.
Task part one: -for the entire chapter- -thumbnail (red sketchy layout of the episode, its vague but comes from my script translated onto the page) -Do all the 3D poses (depending on complexity, amount of characters, this is either very calm, or very difficult to do.) -Add panels (simplest task, since I’m currently using simplistic panelling style.) -Add text, dialogue, sound effects (some aesthetic stuff here and there, I guess.) -Do the backgrounds in advance, so they remain consistent. (I photobash images into textures, and experiment with vague gaussian blur backgrounds currently. No shadows during daylight at this time, it really depends on the mood of the scene.)
Task part two: -For a single webcomic episode upload- -Linearting -Flatting + flatcoloring -Adding highlights -Adding effects, lights or motion blur Mind you, linearting and flatting actually takes the longest as a single portion of everything i’m doing per episode, part one actually takes less energy. If anything, thumbing is the fastest- I’m a visual thinker. 3D can take an hour or more, really depends on how many panels there are. If I just do it, where everytime new chapter pops up, I prep task one, to give myself some space were working on a single episode goes way faster.. Maybe it’ll be better to manage without stressing myself out. You’ll see some chapter 2 episodes pop up hopefully throughout the rest of March!
But for now gotta map out the rest of the episodes to take a load off of work from myself.

I do not! Nothing against it but I just don’t personally enjoy the process so I don’t use it in my personal work. Too much transforming and filtering.. too little actual drawing. I have however used it for professional work and sometimes I will sketch things individually and collage them together to make it easier for me to work depending on the scale. But yeah, no photobashing normally.

Thank you! (post in reference) I didn’t use any perspective grids for that drawing but occasionally for bigger pieces that require a stronger adherence to perspective I’ll use the Perspective Tools extension by Sergey Kritsky which is ABSOULTELY worth the price here on gumroad if you’re a photoshop-user - makes grids very easy to set up. You can actually see some of the grids in my process work if you’re looking for it lol

I used to be such a square abt it like “bluh perspective is just a bunch of lines i dont need a tool to do it for me like a DUMB BABY. I can just draw the grids myself and itll be good enough!!! :\” dont be like that LOL, I started using perspective tools for work last year and ported it over to my personal work so damn fast its like one of the best artistic decisions ive made. If you can make less work for yourself, PLEASE make less work for yourself.

I will probably draw naruto again because like every 4 years of my life I go through a naruto phase. I have drawn dangan ronpa before many many years ago and I gotta say the only time I will ever draw it again will be if I’m commissioned to lol...Nothing against it personally, it’s just not really my thing. Kiritetsu+Colossus.... I would but honestly I don’t even know what I’d draw, I feel like I covered it with that one drawing. But if you’ve got an idea... you can always commission me!!! Uhhhh they’re good! I like them! Yusuke’s character arc is maybe like my favorite or second favorite in the game and I love Ryuji first and foremost for max mittlemans voice acting and secondly because he is just so...so much better than P4 Yosuke who I truly could not stand.
I’m not big on Mishima but I think he’s an incredibly well written depiction of like. that dude in class who you didn’t really mean to talk to but ended up talking to and now its a little weird. I really like that event where you run into shinya while hanging out with mishima and shinyas like “whos this your friend” and ren is like “no, king, hes no one” LOL this is mostly because I just really like shinya. 
ships.... I like yusuke/ryuji a lot, just aesthetically and personality wise its an interesting dynamic. I like ryuji/ann bc theyre good friends. I like ann/yusuke if I close my eyes to all the early plot stuff and just pretend theyre like.....fujiko and goemon from lupin III LMAO. ryuji/makoto? kinda woke?? I mean I feel lesbian makoto deep in my bones but also their showtime opened my eyes a lil. I think they could bond over action movies. mishima/protag is kind of fun in like a sad pathetic way.. I’m a little interested in mishima/JOKER actually bc i like identity porn plotlines lol.

Layout mockup… Instead of the modern full-screen BG+Sprite+Dialogue only styled VN, I was thinking about those boxed-in layouts that some old Japanese games used to do, where they had the scene and incorporated other bits of the UI into a designed border around everything.
I just did some very quick photobashing and other shapes to block in stuff, but I’ll figure out how to unify colors and how to make the scene the main focus :)
There’s some filter variation, but very subtle...
