Friendly reminder that if you want to play a game that has magic, great writing, diverse characters, and isn’t based on a franchise created by a terrible person while also supporting a Jewish dev, Unavowed is right there.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow
After a short break in activity after Unavowed (though some studio members assisting on projects by other studios), Wadjet Eye has become active again with the publication of two horror games in the early 2020s. Neither is exactly what you would expect. The first of them, Strangeland, was made by the Primordia developers and was a very abstract and artistic game about personal tragedy the developers dealt with in their lives. The other, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, is a folk era, eldritch horror story that has influences even older than Lovecraft.

'Wadjet Eye: Sixteen Years of Adventure!' Bundles Just That
It's been a while since a video game bundle last graced the pages of this great blog of mine. Mostly because there simply haven't been any that fell within the whole, you know, indie game thing. I may stray from that path once in a blue moon, but Wadjet Eye Games haven't. They're all about that indie... vibe? Right. Anyway, enough pre-amble. Thirteen games, one price: Wadjet Eye: Sixteen Years of Adventure!

since you mentioned, unavowed was really SO good. hope we get more games in that universe from them. wadjet eye games are pretty much all good and in their latest game - excavation of hob's barrow, Thomasina (main character) is voiced by Karlach's VA and Halsin's VA voices the gnome character (the range and the duality of a man huh :D)
It really was!! Not only the story was fun, but the surprise ending? Amazing. I wish there was a sequel. In general I love wadjet eye games too. The only one I did not enjoy was "A golden wake", but I played Technobabylon, Unavowed, Primordia, Gemini Rue and the Blackwell series of games and I adored them.
I really need to play Shardlight, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow and especially Old Skies because I love time travel shenanigans.

Joey and Rosa my beloved <3
Tumblr media
So I tried to do a sort of "city by night blurry background" but completely clowned on it. It looks a little christmas-y and has some fun Kirby Krackles going on so there.
A little behind the scenes: I am currently doing an art exchange with @cody-helix02 and I asked them for a drawing of Joey and Rosa because they would fit so well in their cute style. And after rambling to them for half an hour about my favorite games ever I felt inspired.

wadjet eye games my beloved!!!
every single game published by wadjet eye games i've played has been A+++. if you enjoy adventure games please check them out!
i just completed the excavation of hob's barrow and the shivah.
the former is a suspenseful archeological mystery with a fantastic climax and just excellent writing all around. i was GRIPPED from beginning to end. it also escapes a lot of the typical pitfalls of adventure games with its well-designed interface.
the latter is a short but excellently written murder mystery with a rabbi as the protagonist. i can't recall any other game with a focal point on judaism and it was clearly made with a lot of love.

finally played Gemini Rue after loving the Blackwell series, and, like, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. i really liked the first half, but then it takes a sharp downturn in my opinion. probably didn't help that i just rewatched the matrix movies, which tackle a lot of the same themes but, like, way better?

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow - Review
As the game progresses, we learn more about the significance of Hob’s Barrow, Bewlay, and Thomasina’s sick father. The game does a good job fleshing out the protagonist via flashback sequences and dialogue. The narrative of this game is pretty good; it allowed me to engage with the story and made me eager to see how it unfolded. The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow also gives a couple of characters more depth by delving into their past and struggles. Overall, there isn’t a dull moment when it comes to the game’s narrative.
Another effective thing The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow likes to do is occasionally zoom in on objects or people for dramatic effect. There are some unsettling scenes in this game, an emphasis on unnatural things as well as gruesome imagery. It’s not the most gruesome game out there, but it’s unsettling enough to strike a nerve. Whether it’s a pile of wiggling worms or someone in excruciating pain, these detailed scenes are effective and equally unsettling. I do wish there were more of these scenes because they do make sequences more immersive. It nails the folklore-inspired, small-town horror vibe it sets out to achieve.
