Ellie fell asleep on the couch. Properly, he thought. Joel was pretty sure she wasn’t faking this time. It didn’t matter. Joel tucked his arms under her, pulling her into him, taking a moment to feel her head tucked into the crook of his neck. He scooped her up into his arms, cradling her to him as he carried her up the stairs.

He laid her down on the bed gently, pulling the blanket over her. She murmured, turning over onto her side. Her eyes fluttered open slightly.

“Goodnight, kiddo,” Joel said quietly.

“Night,” she mumbled back, barely audible, “love you.” She was asleep again.

Joel stood still for a moment, his eyes suddenly wet. He wiped at them, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. “Love you too, babygirl.”
