10 Charachters, 10 Fandoms

Thank you @rowanisawriter for giving me the opportunity to fangirl about my fictional crushes.

Tagging @spacejammie-eimmajecaps, @ashamefulplace and @the-lastcall (and anyone who wants to tune in).

I wasn't sure if I should do this chronologically, or in order of how much I've simped for these people, so let's just get to it:

P.S.: you'll get kudos (and maybe candy) if you pick up on the common themes here.

1. Zuko - ATLA

He was my first fictional crush.

I would write self insert fic about him (which never saw the light of AO3 thankfully), and I would rewatch all of ATLA just to his character go from "I can fix him" brat to adorkable edgy brat.

2. Bill Cipher - Gravity Falls

He had what I at the time called the "sexy British accent". I never even joined the school of thought "he'd burn the whole world down but me". I was chill with burning.

3. Bucky Barnes - MCU

And the bad boy parade continues. I firmly believed that I could fix him, and going back to the (once again thankfully unpublished) self insert slash fics of the time, I realise that I had no idea what in him needed fixing.

4. John Hancock - Fallout 4

Nothing makes me fall harder for a sad meow meow than him going "I'm gonna stop bugging you with my problems, I know I'm too fucked up to love".

I have a save file right before that convo, and I like to revisit it every so often.

5. Egor Serling - Deathloop

While on the topic of sad meow meows, let me introduce you to mister "I've been invisible my whole life 🥺". He's pathetic and slightly unhinged, what is there not to love? ( y/n in my fic about him agrees).

6. David Sarif - Deus Ex

It's hard to pick only one character from the DX games, but I think "Daddy Sarif", as I affectionately call him whenever he's brought up in conversation, belongs here.

He is rich, smart, and believes the illuminati want to tear down his company (and has 0 evidence to back that up).

7. Crosshair - Clone Wars: the Bad Batch

A sad meow meow, a bad boy, and white hair? Can a man be more perfect? Well he's also a sniper ...

He's like Egor, but he'll talk back when you tell him to get on his knees, you know?

8. Billie Lurk - Dishonored

You know the jist by this point, sad, with questionable morals, daddy issues, and missing an arm.

My favourite thing about her is how she goes "this is a robbery" with an audible smirk, as she robs a bank. And also that she kept the creepy art project her girlfriend gave her a decade ago. How sweet is that?

I need to write a self-insert x her fic. But I don't have any Dishonored OCs :/

9. Alyx Vance - Half Life

She was my first girl crush. And I still remember the exact moment I went "damn that chick is cool". It was shortly after reuniting with Barney, when I had to shoot my way through some stupid combine stronghold, and Alyx just crawled through the vents and waited for me on the other side.

(She is the reason I have £500 saved to one day buy a VR set)

10. Bo-Katan Kryze - the Mandalorian (no this isn't cheating, it's a different sub-fandom XP)

Is she just a mommy version of Alyx? Maybe. But the Mandalorian (the TV series), sure helped with the popularity of her character... (I'm talking about that one ass scene).

She also has that sad kitty side to her, when she sits alone in her massive space castle after all her friends have left her.

Okay FF13 let me allocate all my XP, I'm normal about the game again.

Fun fact, there are only four mainline Final Fantasy games that aren't available on Switch. FF1-6 are available as Pixel Remasters, and the PS1 trilogy remasters - with 7 and 9 both releasing years before FF8 allegedly due to lost source code - are there as well.

The Final Fantasy X remaster is on there with its own sequel, Final Fantasy 12 got an updated remaster that got ported down to the Switch and Final Fantasy 15 got a phone game-ass looking demaster that lets you play the entire game on the Switch.

The four games that aren't on the Switch are FF11, which is an MMO; FF14, which is also an MMO; FF16, which is a triple-A game release from 2023 that's exclusively on the PS5 for the time being... and Final Fantasy 13.

My relationship with the game is clearly tumultuous - I like the characters and I defend them based on the strength of their arcs, I think it's a gorgeous game (it still looks great even in 2023) and I don't feel cheated by it because I bought it for ten bucks in like 2015. The combat is fun, and now I'm a more experienced RPG player I can actually work with what the game is giving me. I didn't really get into using buffs and debuffs until I played Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for the first time; pretty much every time I hit a roadblock in FF13, I googled during my first playthrough. Nowadays, I'm handling everything pretty handily.

On the downside - I just can't square up the decision to lock your levelling progress behind story chapters, then thin out enemy resistance so that you get drip-fed the exact amount of XP you need between bosses, and then cap it off by making it a janky endeavour to even attempt grinding in the first place - which might end up biting players in the ass the one part of the game that they might *need* to grind. I appreciate this game, even if I think the foundation of the gameplay is abjectly broken.

And yet, I would still like to see FF13 (and its sequels) release on the Switch. Every other mainline game - except for two MMORPGs and a butt-spankingly new installment in the mainline series - is on there. Warts and all, adding FF13 would complete the set from FF1 to FF15.

And honestly, I'd encourage an RPG enthusiast to play through the game. It's flawed, but there's a lot to process and a lot to potentially appreciate beyond the most sour notes of the criticism.

If I were feeling cynical, I could say that experiencing the bad makes you appreciate the good. You could apply that externally to the entire Final Fantasy franchise, implying that this is the Worst Final Fantasy Game Ever, or you could apply it internally where great visuals, stylish combat and a surprising amount of gameplay depth meet with bafflingly restrictive game design from traversal to core gameplay systems and a rich, detailed narrative that's mostly confined to the optional datalog.

Either way, Final Fantasy 13 is a fascinating game. I have very mixed feelings on it. I think what this game does right - the strong, interwoven character writing, the graphics and the ending of the game - is done worse by its direct sequel, 13-2 - I remember the story regarding Noel being simple and sappy compared to everyone's mess in the first game, the framerate and moment-to-moment graphics are noticeably rougher than the first game, and the game has to retcon itself into existence with a literal deus ex machina.

But by that same token, all the gripes I have with 13 - a levelling system that lets you acquire XP while capping how much of it you can spend, and gameplay environments which are linear to the point of dullness - are absolutely blown away by FF13-2. It's such a fun game. One reason I'm even playing FF13 is because I wanna play the two sequels, including the third game I never got to play. But even then, I just think people should experience what the hell this game is, for better or for worse.

Princess (Part 4), a fan Arc for Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine

Part 1 covered the basics and the Arc 0 powers

Now, the rest! No more powers for the Arc after this post, though I might add some notes or revisions later. This is kind of a first draft, after all.

Pure Light (Powered Up)

Arc 3+

Type: Miraculous Action[, Chthonic Action] Cost (Arc 3-4):

1 MP—summon your pseudo-Element at full power

2 MP—summon a larger amount

Cost (Arc 5):

0 MP—summon your pseudo-Element at full power

1 MP—summon a larger amount

Starting at Arc level 3, you gain the ability to summon your pseudo-Element at full power. This is no longer limited to small scale and minimal range, instead limited to 'about the size of a house' and 'somewhere in the same scene', and its effects are more significant:

if the normal version granted an Auctoritas, now the Auctoritas's level is equal to your Arc level;

if it could heal superficial wounds, now it can heal those instantly and, with time, it can treat more significant wounds.

if it could cause minor damage, now it burn things with an intensity like fire or acid;

if it could form brittle barriers, now they're as durable as solid steel;

if it could repair minor damage to objects, now it can fix anything that's not totally destroyed;

et cetera, scaling up any other powers similarly

If you spend 2 MP (or 1 MP at Arc 5), you can affect things at up to neighborhood scale.

Limitations on Healing. While the wounds the powered up form of Pure Light can heal can be much more severe than the basic version, mechanically it still cannot heal Serious or Deadly Wounds. Specifically, while the apparent physical injury from such Wounds can be healed, the lost Health Levels and the temporary Wound powers usually remain until the Wound properly recovers—descriptively, the character may no longer be physically hurt, but some psychic or spiritual trauma lingers.

Support Magic

Arc 3+

Type: Miraculous Action Cost (Arc 3):

1 MP—1/chapter, use helpful magic

2 MP—use helpful magic an additional time

Cost (Arc 4):

0 MP—1/chapter, use helpful magic

1 MP—use helpful magic an additional time

Cost (Arc 5):

0 MP—1-2x/scene, use helpful magic

1 MP—use helpful magic an additional time

As your supernatural power grows, you can learn to use it for things other than directly throwing around your pseudo-Element. When you first gain this power, choose three 'support spells' that you can cast. You can learn additional spells for a Recharge Token or 15+-XP Quest each. A support spell is a simple, direct miracle that:

harmlessly creates something useful, such as food and drink, simple tools, or clothing;

detects and identifies some category of thing, such as living beings, treasure, traps and hazards, or things of the Outside;

gives one or more allies a temporary, useful ability such as levitation, invisibility, the ability to see in the dark, or greatly enhanced strength;

defeats a specific sort of obstacle, e.g. by opening locks, dispelling illusions, or calming animals;

protects allies or an area from an environmental hazard—creating a bubble of breathable air that repels liquids and harmful gas, shielding an area against the corrosive forces of the Outside, or drawing a circle that ghosts and demons can't cross; or

anything else you and the HG agree might fit, of comparable power to the above—it shouldn't be something that can be used to attack enemies directly, at least not easily, and ideally it should be something you can use to aid or support your Treasures.

Power of the Heart

Arc 4+

Type: Chthonic Action

0 MP—1/book, demonstrate a deus ex machina power

2 MP—do the same, a second or later time per book

4 MP—do the same, a second or later time per chapter

You can invoke Power of the Heart to supercharge your pseudo-Element. This is a shapeless deus ex machina power, capable of manifesting as a Tool bonus, a Major miracle, a Wish, or whatever else it needs. The core of it is like a wish of the form,

"I wish I could use my pseudo-Element for this."

The usual function is to provide you with a temporary new use for Pure Light and a single free invocation of the same, potentially powered up to a Major miracle if necessary to accomplish your goal, but it can also provide Support Magic, empower one of your Treasures, or loan you other powers such as Chosen One's Shield or Blast. The power-up may last for just a single use, a scene, a Chapter, or a whole Book—this depends on what you're trying to do with it, and how long the HG expects that to take.

And that’s it! I may try to do an Understanding Princess post later, or do a rewrite after some balance tweaks and testing, or whatever, but for now, this should be at least a basically functional arc!
