"Why does a 15-minute visit with a doctor cost 150 bucks in America???" you're gonna want to read Money-Driven Medicine, by Maggie Mahar, and probably also The Social Transformation of American Medicine, to answer that question. It is not because your doctor is a greedy bastard; your doctor does not see most of that money. It is because the system is broken to a level that is truly impressive in its dedication to making a shit ton of money for insurance company executives and shareholders.

This is apparently a hotter take than I thought but: hating on lawyers as a profession, calling them inherently dishonest etc. is politically reactionary. It discourages defendants from seeking legal counsel, puts forth the idea that it’s inherently suspicious to insist on seeing a lawyer before you answer police questioning (your constitutional right!) etc. which ultimately just benefits the state in making it easier for them to convict you. This is one of those things that “progressives” who were raised conservative often don’t realize is one of the parts of their parents’ worldview they should question more, but they should. Not only are lawyers not The Problem with “our system,” but having someone who is educated in the law whose job is to represent your interests in court — getting one regardless of your ability to pay, even! — is in fact one of the best parts of it.

I was at a survivors group & someone brought up kinks. I said kinks such as CNC *could* be helpful towards survivors, but it depends. A guy said he was in kink spaces for years & he was abused & I was hurting victims. I admitted that I had rape fantasies and that was a way to process them, & he said I needed therapy to help get rid of those thoughts because I romanticized my situation. Everyone agreed and afterwards he called to tell me I was a danger. I feel guilty, but I can't stop. Advice?
hi anon,
I'm terribly sorry this happened; what a shitty way to find out you need to find a better survivor support group. this would be wildly inappropriate behavior in any setting, but in a space where the goal is presumably supporting and uplifting survivors it's especially nasty. I'm deeply sorry to the person in your group who was hurt by his time in kink spaces, but extrapolating that to you and your activities is entirely inappropriate, and calling you outside of the group to call you a danger is a gross overstepping of boundaries and incredibly mean-spirited.
let me be super clear about this: fantasies about rape and nonconsensual sex are incredibly among all people, survivors and otherwise. there is no moral component to that. there is no moral component to any sexual fantasy, only to how you treat any people with whom you decide to act that fantasy out. it's perfectly fine if you as a survivor of assault find something cathartic about rape fantasies and consensual non-consent, but you're also allowed to enjoy those things just because you find them sexy. kinks don't require written proof to morally justify their existence.
so my advice is get the fuck out of there, look for a more affirming space to find support in, and possibly leave behind a strongly worded letter telling the old group to go fuck themselves.

Hey... so there now appear to be AI-generated science articles on .org websites that are giving biologically incorrect "facts" on basic, for-children topics
The title is "Are There Freshwater Octopus Species?" which should be an incredibly straightforward thing to answer: No.
The article starts out decent:
"Despite their many fascinating features, there is no evidence to suggest that octopuses can survive in freshwater environments."
Cool. Okay. Next section.
"While most people associate octopuses with the ocean, there are some species that can survive in freshwater environments."
Wait. What?
"Freshwater octopuses belong to the genus Amphioctopus, which includes several species that are found in brackish water and estuaries. These cephalopods have adapted to life in freshwater environments and have been observed in rivers, streams, and even hydrothermal vents."
NO NO NO.
One species of freshwater octopus is Amphioctopus aegina...Another species, Amphioctopus marginatus...
THESE GUYS LIVE IN THE OCEAN. [Scrolls 2 more sections]
Freshwater octopuses are still a topic of debate among scientists. While some researchers claim that they do exist, others argue that there is not enough literature to support their existence.

If you find yourself too often battling against executive dysfunction, the element of choice aspect can be super easy to exploit
For me, the big one is brushing my teeth
I could never convince myself to get up and do it, but the solution I found is having two toothbrushes (I have a rainbow one and a soft one) and somehow making the experience more choice based tricked my adhd brain into being more interested with the element of uncertainty
which one will I choose today??
but this technique can obviously fit into a lot of daily things; different shampoos, different routes to work, different alarms
because all your brain wants is the dopamine and choices are FUN

I think what a lot of people don't get about adhd is that, at least in my experience, the difficulty staying focused makes me perceive one, very short and doable thing as a series of multiple microtasks. Like it's not just, "Start drawing". It's "Get computer. Get pillow. Get charger. Get headphones. Arrange everything. Open the file. Decide to listen to music or YouTube. Pick the playlist. Get up and get the pen you forgot. Settle everything back on you again. Don't open tumblr and just start rambling about executive dysfunction. Get off tumblr-"
