Hello, everyone! How is your study going?
I’ve made a guide for those of you who are still learning the Korean alphabet. Please be aware that I do not encourage the use of romanization. I’ve included it in here because I received a number of asks asking about a post like this. There are so many different ways of pronouncing the same letters or words that all of you may read the words above completely differently from how I do.
My best advice would be to download an app on your phone or watch a youtube video in order to learn how to pronounce each letter properly. This romanization is a rough guide, and I’ve written it to how I read it in my head. I believe you will find that they are the letters that you will most commonly find being used to represent each Korean letter. After a while, you’ll find you won’t even need romanization to help you along! :-)
I wish you all good luck.

Korean Alphabet (Hangul)
Vowels:
ㅏ (ah)
ㅓ (eo; sounds a little like “oh”)
ㅗ (oh)
ㅜ (ooh)
ㅡ (eu; I don’t really know how to describe this sound)
ㅣ (ee or i)
ㅑ (yah)
ㅕ (yeo)
ㅛ (yo)
ㅠ (yoo)
ㅐ (ae; sounds like a)
ㅒ (yae)
ㅔ (eh)
ㅖ (ye)
ㅢ (oo-ee)
ㅘ (wa)
ㅙ (wae)
ㅚ (oe; sounds like wae)
ㅝ (wo)
ㅞ (weh)
ㅟ (wee)
A vowel cannot make a sound without a consonant. In words like 안녕 하세요 (annyeong haseyo; hello) the silent consonant ㅇ is used. ㅇ is also ng. In 안녕 the first ㅇ is silent, but the last ㅇ is ng.
Consonants:
ㄱ (k/g)
ㄲ (kk; sounds like gg)
ㄴ (n)
ㄷ (t/d)
ㄸ (dd)
ㄹ (r/l; the r is rolled, like in Spanish)
ㅁ (m)
ㅂ (b/p)
ㅃ (bb)
ㅅ (s)
ㅆ (ss)
ㅇ (silent at the start of a word or syllable/ng at the end of a word or syllable)
ㅈ (ch/j)
ㅉ (jj)
ㅊ (ch)
ㅋ (k)
ㅌ (t)
ㅍ (p)
ㅎ (h)
*Note: Hangul is written in syllable blocks.
If you’re confused about anything, please message me. ^^

Handwritten VS Typed Korean
Tumblr media
This post has been requested by @softsoundmidnightcarlight !
The letters in purple are the letters used for calligraphy but some people with messy handwriting use it for everyday use (not recommended)
Tumblr media
When handwriting Korean letters, you’ll notice that Korean people don’t write the letter as you see in when it’s typed! Korean people tend to write these letters so that it’s easier to write. You’ll notice this the most with ‘ㄹ’! Since ‘ㄹ’ is made up of 5 separate lines that are very straight and rigid, when you write it quickly it tends to look more like the English letter ‘z’!

That such a day, permitted so,
I grouped upon his breast-
