I often see people reference the end of ACOWAR to signal the end of elriel but the scene is so often misconstrued.
"Elain returned truth teller and didn't look back, and then smiled at Lucien and invited him to Velaris."
Okay...yes, Elain returned Azriel's sword. It is his sword. If she had tried to keep it, he most certainly would've asked for it back. Also, Elain is not a warrior. What use does she have for it after that moment?
As for the Lucien interaction. He shows up and is trying to determine if she's injured. A faint smile blooms on her lips and she tells him she's fine. Feyre takes control of the conversation because once again, it is a little awkward between Lucien and Elain. When Feyre asks him what's next, she elbows Elain, who then says "you could come to Velaris." Feyre even thinks to herself that Lucien saw the whole thing but politely said it would be his pleasure anyways. Even Lucien is aware that Elain only invited him because Feyre urged her to be polite. This is not some romantic gesture. It is just another awkward interaction between them.

At the end of the day,
It doesn’t matter what Sjm said 6/7 years ago in interviews that she never reinforces or mentions again. Interviews which most readers don’t keep up with. Especially casual readers.
It doesn’t matter what happened in a bonus chapter most of the fandom haven’t read let alone heard off.
What matters is what Sjm chose to write in the books, books available & accessible to every one of her readers.
She chose to have elucien’s bond questioned 2x.
She chose to compare elain to Azriel and the twins. Not Lucien or the band of exiles.
She chose to have Lucien say he isn’t always in the NC to see his “mate”
She chose to have Elain shrink back and lose her boldness from her own mate.
She chose to have Azriel be the one to know what was amiss with Elain.
She chose Azriel to spend time with elain in the gardens.
She chose Azriel to risk his death to save Elain.
She chose Azriel to give elain TruthTeller, forever connecting them. She chose to make Elain and Az share romantic glances, blushes and smiles.
she chose to have both of acosf’s main characters note romantic moments between elriel such as a charged glance
She chose elriel to make endgame. Even if elucien were her og plan. It’s clear they didn’t have chemistry sjm could write.
and Gwyn isn’t even a canon love interest.
It might not have always been elriel, but it will end with elriel.
Elain and Azriel.
Death and the lovely fawn. The Seer and The Shadowsinger

See lots of antis talk about how Elain is so suited to Lucien because as a human she was really social and bubbly and enjoyed balls and parties and society. But SJM herself told the story of Tamlin and Feyre in which she makes a point to write that the human Feyre needed comfort and safety and once she was Fae it was no longer what she needed. She wrote that Feyre had changed, and Tamlin hadn't changed with her. Why should we assume Elain remains perfectly unchanged after being forced into the cauldron? Why do antis want her to fall right back into her human life? Surely she is meant for more than that, and needs something different after the trauma she went through. She is not the same girl she was.

The fact that there are some people throughout this fandom who can't understand that it's entirely possible to like more than one of the Archeron sisters is absolutely baffling to me

exactly to both of these additions! Elain likely knew that if she wasn't the one to do these things then no one would, because Nesta was not social and outgoing, and Feyre was described as "wild" by her mother. So the burden fell on Elain and she did what she could to live up to it.

Hey, can I show you something cool?!
I’m currently rereading the series while listening to the audiobooks (10/10 recommend), and I’m currently in ACOWAR, Azriel teaching Feyre how to fly.
Do you remember Nephelle’s story? The Seraphim female with too small wings that wasn’t soldier material and was undermined her whole life?
Tumblr media
ACOWAR - Chapter 29
I couldn’t not relate with how Elain was the one who killed King Hybern. The lovely fawn that Azriel himself armed with his favorite dagger.
Is it reaching to think SJM did this on purpose? Had Azriel explain the Nephelle Philosophy and have Elain land the kill blow and change the course of history? What do you guys think?!

Things Elain Owes Lucien:
Literally, absolutely nothing.
She did not choose him, he did not choose her. They have had no prior romantic relationship, nor friendship, nor even acquaintance before she was declared his mate. She is a born human turned fae, she does not owe him anything. She is not obligated to respect fae traditions and what they value, despite now being fae for a grand total of like 1.5 years. She has spent the majority of her life until very recently as a human. She has no obligation to respect fae values (although one would argue she still does value and respect them anyways)
Things Elain should probably do at some point (like in her own book???), but again, is not obligated to do with Lucien:
Have a conversation about the bond
Accept or Reject the bond so everyone can be free to love whomever they please
Things Elain should NOT do with Lucien:
Accept the bond due to pressure from Rhys/Lucien/Fae tradition/Political Reasons/to keep the peace
Accept the bond because if she doesn't "she'll feel it forever and he might go crazy" - that's not really a choice then - is it 🤨? Sounds like a threat / guilt trip more so than a choice
Accept the bond for ANY reason other than because she truly loves Lucien
Things Elain is not currently doing with Lucien:
Associating with him in any way
Being in the same room as him
Cheating on him with Azriel
Elain is definitely not "cheating on Lucien" with Azriel. See my point above - she does not owe Lucien anything as neither of them are in this relationship out of their own free will. You can't cheat on someone you're not in a relationship with. Do they have a relationship of some form? Yes. But it's not a romantic relationship, and they were strangers when the mating bond snapped for them, so it's not cheating of any sort.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Good day 😀

“Elain said she needs sunshine and Lucien is the heir of the Day Court. Elucien endgame confirmed 🥰”
You mean this scene?
Tumblr media
The scene where Elain is physically with Lucien, but leaves him to go to the SUNNY garden in Velaris? That’s the scene that foreshadows Lucien as what she needs?
That scene actually reminds me of a previous scene where Elain is enjoying the sun in the townhouse garden (in Velaris)…with Azriel.
Tumblr media
The scene where they sit in silent companionship and Feyre sees them and wonders “Why not make them mates?”
Tumblr media
But I guess that means nothing.

• Azriel who had his sunlight taken from him when he was a mere child and locked away in the darkest corners of his father's cruelty
• Elain who is a bright light in the sea of darkness. Who has time and again been referred to as light
• Azriel barely had a taste of light before it was snatched away from him again
HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THE ANGST AND PAIN AND TORTURE IN THEIR STORY? HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE BEAUTY OF THEM FINDING PEACE AND SOLACE WITH EACH OTHER? AZRIEL BASKING IN ELAIN'S LIGHT AND ELAIN FINDING CALMNESS IN AZRIEL'S DARKNESS????????

Exactly! Also they must be forgetting when Cassian asked Lucien about Elain, Lucien's voice dripped with discomfort. Sjm is not being subtle about it lol.
Saw a post today that was something like...Lucien's gifts are just so perfect for Elain that she's angry he knows her so well so that's why she avoids him. Where do these ideas come from? She shrinks away from him. She would rather have her hands cut up than use the gloves. She never once touches the pearl earrings. Meanwhile she is trying to makeout with Azriel while Lucien sleeps just upstairs. She does not want him.
