katniss and peeta finding an old sheet of paper wedged into his grandmother’s old sturdy recipe book that survived the bombing in the bakery’s safe. finding a silly little recipe for s’mores written in a child’s hand and they decide to try it out to pass the day. katniss goes on the hunt for marshmallow root out in the woods, peeta tries to perfect different square crackers at the bakery, and they all walk back from the train hand in hand with the very first chocolate that the new panem shipped to raise spirits as it’s nearing the anniversary of the reapings. katniss smearing the treat all over her face while she’s eating it with a grin and peeta just has to lean in to kiss her clean while cicadas are chirping in the district and lightning bugs are starting to flit around their backyard. they lay back in the grass as the ringing quiet swells around them and peeta keeps tracing circles with his thumb on her hand as they both trace the stars above with their eyes. fifteen years later a gummy infant chews on the graham crackers his father’s perfected and a little girl squeaks as her mother rubs down her entire face with a damp cloth to get the sticky marshmallow and chocolate off her face.
