She was always going to outlive her captors. She had known that the day that she was captured, chained in a dungeon that she could not escape alone. It was a matter of time, a matter of waiting. But one day, she would be free. She simply had to reach that day.

And so, day in, and day out she maintained her focus on the energy orb. At first, it was a bore, but as time continued to move onward, reality shifted, and quieted. It was almost peaceful, like this. She didn't have to think about those who had been lost in the battle that trapped her.

She didn't have to think about how her race was dying out at the hand of these humans who destroyed everything they touched.

Time blurred and warped around her. The orb was never going to last forever, none could maintain that kind of focus for their entire life. The orb shattered as soon as her attention was no longer locked onto it.

Ah. The woman was suddenly aware of reality seeping in. The dungeon was ruined around her, the chains had rusted apart enough that she could break them. It would leave the bands on her arms, but she could walk away.

It still took a few moments of yanking to free herself fully. Outside waits freedom, but so too waits a world that she no longer knows. Are her people even a part of it, anymore? What will happen when she steps out of these ruins?

With her concentration broken, she is beset with reality. Hunger gnaws at her stomach, fatigue weights down her limbs.

Instead of the feeling of warm triumph for being free there was fear and trepidation. What awaited her outside of the walls? But despite that, she drew herself upright, and cautiously stepped out of the cell, making her way to a place where the ruined wall was open enough to slip through.

Moss overgrew parts of the wall. She ran her fingers along it, enjoying the feel of greenery. She could see, down in the valley that there was a settlement. She would avoid it, if she could, lest she end up in more chains.

"You- You're awake."

She spins to face the voice instantly. Though, a flash of bemusement mingles with the fear. Of course she's awake, she had never been anything but awake. Did the other really think she could sleep while maintaining such an orb?

"It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." The figure has their hands up slightly, palm out. It's a rudimentary attempt to show they are unarmed, and nonthreatening. She knew that there were plenty of ways to be threatening, even unarmed. Humans came in swarms.

This one was human, of that she was certain.

"You've been like that since my grandmother was a little girl. Probably longer. That was when they found this place. What...-" The human shook their head. "No, where are my manners. I'm Cameron."

The name told her nothing about the human. It didn't matter. What is curious to her is that she sees confusion and curiosity in this humans eyes, rather than hatred or fear.

She frowned, aware that her name would be unpronounceable to them. "You may call my Lyre."

Cameron took a step forward, and she took a step back. They seemed to recognize the gesture for what it was and backed off again, leaning against a tree nearby.

Your punishment was to be forced to maintain an energy orb, a task that requires immense concentration, for the rest of your life, but you started enjoying it, time was a blur. When your concentration finally failed, you look up, to see your dungeon in ruins, your chains rusted apart.

latelatelate- but I have finally Updated this with all the stuff from basically the entire last year bc I had last touched it in november gosh.

Of note:

Several FFVII fics (several were holiday gifts!). Two Honkai: Star Rail Fics. And a rwby fic!

Also of note: Revealed by Mirrored Eyes has been completed! and I'm finding something of a work-life balance again so hopefully there are more words on the horizon <3

When I Started: I started RBME sometime in 2019. 

How I Lost My Shit: Life happened, other fandoms happened. Suddenly it had been 4 years and I knew I wanted to finish it for its birthday this year (in December!). 

How I Finished My Shit: A large part of the motivation came from desperately wanting to finish before its 4th birthday in December because that felt like an important milestone (to me). It absolutely wouldn’t have been possible without all the support from my lovely artist and the WIP Bang team (and members!) in general. Work made it rough this year, but it was worth it. 20k+ words added to the fic and a conclusion that I’m proud of, even if it isn’t 100% what I envisioned when I started the fic all that time ago.

This is my fic for the @sephirothevents run Sephiroth Mini-Bang! I was partnered with the incredible @dyradoodles and @kimartings for the event and it was such a delightful experience! See dyradoodles Piece here | See kimartings piece here! Summary:

In the depths of the Wutai War, Sephiroth is assigned a young Second Class SOLDIER, Angeal’s protege, Zack Fair. Sephiroth doesn’t pay the boy much mind until the pair of them are cut off from the rest of their unit behind enemy lines. Injured and aware that the clock is ticking, the pair must work together to survive. Things get worse long before they get better, seeing as Wutai forces find them first. From there, it’s holding on long enough to try and find a way out - or for help to find them - whichever comes first.

“Escort Fair to where your team has their tents set up, please.” “He’ll be replacing Edmond then?” “Indeed,” Sephiroth said, before turning his attention back to Zack. “Jackson here will be your squad leader. Treat him with the same respect you would treat me and pull your own weight. This is not an easy division to get by in.” “I understand, Se- Sir.”  Sephiroth’s eyes narrowed fractionally at the slip, more in surprise than anything. “You’re both dismissed.”

"The SOLDIER and the Gunman" for the WIP Game post! I'm very intrigued by this title

OH So this is an outtake from the Zakkura shorts series of Zack and Barret's first meeting!

It was cut because I couldn't get it to flow right at the time (I'm so bad at arguments and stuff) but I kept it because I do want to polish it into its own Thing:tm: even if its a short thing eventually.

Snippet under the cut:

“What do you want me to say?” Zack said finally, eyes on the man with the prosthetic hand. Marlene and Denzel had gone upstairs to finish packing for the camping trip that they’d be taking with Barret. Cloud was helping Tifa in the kitchen.

It left him and Barret alone together in the living room. He wondered if that had been a good idea, and he considered escaping into the kitchen himself. But Zack… Zack held his ground. He’d never run from a fight before, and this felt more important than a fight. This man was Cloud’s friend. Zack wanted to earn his respect on his own terms. He just didn’t know what Barret wanted of him.

“I don’t want you to say anything, soldier boy-”

“Don’t call me that.” Zack snapped. The slightest edge of his temper flickering as he tried to rein it in. “I’m Ex-SOLDIER. I lost any interest in being called that after Nibelheim.”

Maybe before then, whether he’d admitted it to himself or not. But Nibelheim, it had been the final straw. What Shinra did to them in the wake of that horror could never be forgiven. “My name is Zack.” And he would damn well appreciate it being used.

He looked away, breaking the intensity of the moment, though he was well aware of Barret’s presence. It was more than he’d meant to say, but Zack wasn’t really sorry about saying it after all.

“You don’t have to tell me your story, but I want you to think about… if you had it all together at thirteen. If you knew everything about how terrible Shinra would become.” A breath out. “I won’t apologize for what I was. For what I did. I won’t apologize for wanting to make a difference. Can’t change the past. I can only look forward to the future.”
