Let’s talk boundaries: prevent emails from running your life! If you get flooded and are expected to constantly check your emails during the day, mark important ones or ones requiring a reply as “unread” so you’ll come back to them. Set aside time at the end of each work day to reply. If you’re working late, then don’t press send! Schedule send for the next morning to reinforce the boundary that you are unavailable outside of contracted hours. It’s great to not even have your work email connected to your personal phone, but otherwise you can turn off notifications and refuse to check emails during evenings and weekends. Finally, never reply to an email from a heightened emotional state. Wait 24 hours until you respond. This gives you time to cool your jets. Alternatively, draft a rant, delete it, then start again. This gets the emotion out of your system before attempting clearer, professional communication. A beautiful morning practice of mine is standing under the tree in my backyard and performing a 60 second quick breath pattern. I follow this by moving through wide squats with outstretched arms, cycling the energy through my body. Being outside is a quick way to just let this energy flow. Nature is so calming for your mind/body/soul. If you can, get into nature every day. This isn’t always going to be a hike in the mountains or a paddle on a lake, but it can be as simple as walking barefoot in the grass of your local park. 🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳 Today my husband and I took our toddler to the playground before the heat of the day. I took the first shift playing while my husband sat with the baby in the shade, then we switched. Sitting on the grass watching my husband and little one play was just the self care this new momma two needed today. Enjoy your summer, stay cool, and rest up! ☀️ #teacherwellbeing #teachinglife #teachermomlife #teacherselfcare #teachertips #primaryschoolteacher #burnoutrecovery #educationispower #educators #teachermom #teachersofthegram #proudteacher #middleschoolteacher #teach #teachers #teacherstyle #selfcaretips #selfcareis #selfcareisntselfish https://www.instagram.com/p/CRK2B8yMCMx/?utm_medium=tumblr

Many of us confuse constantly thinking about something as preparation for it. For example, some teachers have high hopes for the coming school year while others are still exhausted from the last year-and-a-half, worried about variants, worried about back to in person, worried about “learning loss”, worried about back to “normal” or continuing with “new normal,” and never taking time for their own mental and emotional health. That worry does not make those teachers more prepared. During weekends and holidays, you need to turn your brain OFF of work. The same goes for personal problems. Sometimes you need to take a break from thinking about something so that you stop worrying. When your mind is clear, start preparing. - Make a best case scenario plan - Make a worst case scenario plan - Schedule what you can control into your calendar - Create flexible content or resources you can access if either plan turns out - Don’t place anything on your to-do list that is a maybe or that you can’t control (meaning don’t take on new tasks until you have direction) Worrying is an energy trap. If you’re a detailed-oriented over-thinker, then redirect your energy to creating an action plan and a back-up contingency plan. At least then you’ll have something to show for the hours you’d otherwise be upset and no further ahead. Remember: your wellbeing is more important than your worry. If you need more help with that, I specialize is educator self care and welcome you to join my online course. For all those teachers who care too much and work too hard, I’m going to get loud to help shake you out of it: YOU'RE DOING YOUR STUDENTS A DISSERVICE! When you are everything to every student, you rob them of the opportunity to gain independence. For example: I used to use the Remind App for every piece of homework. The ONE time I was too tired and forgot, my students didn't do their work and blamed me for it not being done. Teachers need boundaries, too. This includes not answering emails outside of work hours, not taking the world upon their shoulders, and not being everything to everyone to their own detriment. If you need help establishing, communicating, and maintaining lasting boundaries to prevent a toxic environment from consuming your career, please DM me to book your complimentary call. How does teacher brain fog affect students? You don't even see it! As a burned out teacher, you may think you're still showing up great for each student, but brain fog will prevent you from seeing the little things. Trust me, I KNOW you're doing an amazing job, but there is more going on than you notice. For example: I was exhausted one day and running off my feet to get to each student who put their hand up for extra help. One student said to me "Mrs. Martin, I just wanted you to know that it didn't make me feel very good that you saw my hand up, nodded at me, then when two more people asked you a question you helped them first and forgot about me." I was heartbroken! Here I was, doing my absolute best, running off my feet, but my brain fog didn't allow me to SEE the lack of efficiency in my room. Teachers: I see you. You care SO much and work SO hard, but sometimes you STILL come up short. What you need are streamlined, efficient systems to reduce workload, eliminate overwhelm, and help you take care of yourself better--not only for you but your students, too! Watch this free video if you think you're living in a false story of teacher burnout: https://wellness-potential-teacher.mykajabi.com/overcome-distorted-thinking (Second link in my IG bio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQdlvV5Mvbh/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Fake it till you make it" doesn't always work! If you are just feeling ho-hum and average, then you can try forcing a smile. Smiling activates neuropeptides in the brain that release the feel-good neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine. If you catch an automatic negative thought that limits your goals, you can stop and consciously think of a positive affirming thought instead. Where "fake it till you make it" DOESN'T apply is any situation in which you would be creating toxic positivity in the form of denial that real issues are present. Putting on a brave face and ignoring real issues is not healthy and does not make you happier. When real emotions come up, it's a sign that something needs to be addressed, not suppressed. Why 30% of teachers are walking away. What are they walking away from? BURNOUT! Teaching has always been a demanding career, but this year has been especially challenging. Additional pressures, workloads, and stress have been put on teachers' shoulders this year with no help from the upper administration. Not every teacher is burned out, though. How have some teachers been thriving through all of this? Is their system repeatable? Most teachers who thrive can't even place their finger on the reason behind their success. It's not obvious. They still care about students. They still do their work. But something about them is different. They think differently; they have a different story. Learn more about the false story of teacher burnout! What do you want? I mean, what do you REALLY want for your life, your career, your relationships, and your wellbeing? So many of us are unclear on the specifics of what we REALLY want. Sure we all want more time, more money, better relationships and to be healthier. But that answer is TOO VAGUE. If you don’t have a highly specific goal, it’s like practicing archery without aiming. How likely are you to hit a bullseye on a target if you’re aimlessly shooting anywhere in an open field? Then there’s the “I don’t deserve that” obstacle. Maybe want you really want is a house with a big back yard, but then decide no house will ever be in your price range. Then the procrastination, “it’s just so much work,” or “I don’t have time for that” excuses come up. You want to lose weight, but don’t commit to exercise. How do you overcome this to get what you really want? 1) The first step is always acknowledgement. Fess up! Own what’s holding you back. Call yourself on it. You need to identify the problem in order to get a solution. 2) Do inner work to overcome the limiting belief (I teach this in my book and through my online course) 3) Take action to establish new habits If you are a teacher who wants to become well and thrive in every aspect of your life—including eradicate teacher burnout permanently—then I’m here for you! Watch the first video in my bio for the ultimate secret to getting what you REALLY want as a teacher. . . . #teacherselfcarematters #teacherselfcare #selfcaretips #teacherburnout #selfcarehelp #takecareofyourself #teacherhacks #teacherwellbeing #teacherwellness #teachersofinstagram #teacherstress #teacherlife #teacherlife🍎 #teachermom #teachergoals #teacherproblems #teachingonline #teacherstuff #teacherstruggles #teacherstrong https://www.instagram.com/p/CQQgkRTsrOt/?utm_medium=tumblr

When you accept yourself as you are, flaws and all, a wonderful thing happens. You stop berating yourself for eating poorly and think instead of how you can beat nourish your body. You stop working out to lose weight or get buff and choose exercise for lifelong health benefits instead. You create a positive mental attitude that’s open to learning, unhindered by negative belief patterns that hold you back. Your emotions stabilize as you stop taking everything others do so personally. As a teacher, the last one has been a big one for me. I had to overcome the notion that my students’ academic success defined my worth as a teacher. If you continue to look for validation through external factors, you’ll never find what you need. What you need is to take some of that huge capacity you have to care for others and turn it to yourself. Work on your flaws without berating yourself that you have them. Overcome perfectionism by accepting that you are perfectly imperfect just the way you are, always learning/changing/growing. Most importantly: take care of yourself because no one else can do it for you. Don’t do self care as another “to do” or because your employer copped out of responsibility for putting too much on your plate. That’s not self care, that’s a boundary issue. Instead, choose to accept your worth and know that by showing up for yourself, you better show up for those you care for. Every day? Every day! My summer morning routine involves standing barefoot under the big tree in our back yard, grounding my energy, and doing a breath work exercise. I do wear shoes if it’s rainy, but I don’t care if the neighbours crane their necks to see me in my PJs, breathing fresh air outside is how I start my day. I live in Canada, so it’s rather difficult to want to go outside every day in the winter. That’s why I cherish this time all summer long to soak up my vitamin D and watch my toddler play in the grass. Live the self care that you preach to others ❤️ #teachergram #teachersummer #teachersummerlife #teacher #teachermentalhealth #educationmentor #teachmentalhealth #teachersofinstagram #teachfromtheheart #teachit #teachers #teachergram #teacherproblems #teachertribe #teachertruth #teachertalk https://www.instagram.com/p/CQGvP_BM9qa/?utm_medium=tumblr

End of school year, anyone? Teachers know how much this summer break is needed. Not for further learning. Not for catching up academic gaps. This summer is for rest, rejuvenation, and play. Oh, I’m not just referring to students. Teachers: you need to take your own advice! Sleep, read for fun, enjoy your hobbies, have family time. Last summer was filled with PD for online and distance learning, additional preparation, and worry. This summer stop teacher burnout in its tracks. Prevent yourself from ever getting to this state again, even if the world changes again in stressful ways. This summer, transform your Essential Self Care. The unpopular TRUTH! 😳 It’s not “just the way you are.” Quit saying, “It runs in the family, so I’m hopeless.” Definitely don’t say, “I’ll never be able to cure this.” Let me clarify , this is NOT victim blaming. Mental illness is no joke and it is not your fault if you are suffering. BUT I’m here to be very real with you and say that you CAN overcome mental illness. For example, clinical depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. With a mindset shift that changes your habits, sleep routine, nutrition, and exercise, your brain can heal. I won’t sugar coat this, it’s not easy. As someone who battled depression I was completely apathetic, fatigued, had brain fog, and when I was on medication the zombie symptoms got even worse. It seemed impossible that I’d ever climb out of that hole. Again: it’s not easy, but there is hope that you can become well. Not just healthy, not just have the absence of mental illness, but be completely WELL in every aspect of your life. PSA: there is hope. Teachers: if you’re struggling, I can specifically help YOU. I’m @mrsagracemartin The Wellness Potential Teacher. If you want to change and are looking for help, I’m here. DM me. Reach out. Don’t become another educator suffering in silence, telling others to look after their mental health while ignoring yours. #teacher #teachermentalhealth #educationmentor #teachmentalhealth #teachersofinstagram #teachfromtheheart #teachit #teachers #teachergram #teacherproblems #teachertribe #teachertruth #teachertalk https://www.instagram.com/p/CP9tScKMK-6/?utm_medium=tumblr
