can we just talk about how underrated platonic ships are?

you never, ever see people gushing over their platonic ships. romantic ship posts are a dime a dozen, but people never talk about platonic ships. why not?? I can’t be the only one (or one of like two) who thinks platonic is better than romantic any day. so why the lack of platonic posts? why aren’t platonic relationships held at the same esteem of romantic ones?

Film Review: True Grit (2010)

Rating: 4/5

Despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the 2011 Oscars for her performance in True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld is the real star of this film. I do also mean that kind of literally. She plays the protagonist of this Western. 

Steinfeld's character is Mattie Ross: a stern, self-righteous, and seriously stubborn fourteen-year-old who seems to know the law better than the lawman she has hired to pursue her father's killer, explaining to him what malum in se means and that it is Latin. She frequently threatens to take legal action against others with the help of her trusted Lawyer Daggett (who we never see, but only hear in voice-over). She does this repeatedly during a heated haggle with a trader. "You are an unnatural child," the trader tells her.

For many characters in the story, Mattie is a real frustrating person to deal with. And to me too!—Something I realised while trying to reread the original True Grit novel soon after this viewing of the 2010 film. Since she's the narrator of the book, you hear her voice throughout...I didn't get far before I had to stop. I felt too irritated!

Mattie probably isn't someone you'd like to be around for too long in real life. But Steinfeld plays her so convincingly, and with such strength and charisma that while watching, you may not realise it. You're just impressed. If you find yourself rewatching True Grit (which I can see myself doing again), I'd imagine Steinfeld's Mattie would be a big part of the reason why.

so i know a lot of people basically ignore netflix’s pacific rim: the black, but there’s like angsty Herc-centric fic potential there

like, the man loses his wife, has to raise Chuck on his own (and deal with all the issues that come with that), makes a bad decision and gets a broken arm out of it which makes him unable to pilot with his son, then watches Chuck go off and die. but at least his son died getting rid of the Kaiju right?

WRONG, because the kaiju came back and are overrunning australia, so Herc has to pilot a jaeger again, then surprise, his co-pilot dies during a kaiju fight.

There’s a board of people who point at Herc Hansen and say “I want this man to suffer”
