I was just re-reading the early pages of Alterity, and for the first time I noticed a really cool detail - on Page 16, all of the scratch and slash marks on the tree that Sandy was climbing. What a great bit of foreshadowing!

Nice catch noticing that. They might have been practicing the very move they used later!

you once mentioned you had a "worldbuilding bible document" or something along these lines. have you thought about sharing it or would it spoil plot points from the comic?

I understand “it’s not cheating to do things in ways that work for you” is something that a lot of people need to hear, but for my part, I am absolutely cheating, and people telling me I’m doing it wrong just inspires me to find even wronger ways to get where I need to go, because fuck ‘em.

would any of yall read a written nuzlocke? i feel like the comics get way more traffic but trying to learn to draw well enough to pull it off is doing p much nothing but tanking my self-esteem. i’m pretty okay with words though i just. creating into a void is rough, you know?

(for folks who don’t know the term - a nuzlocke is a playthrough of a pokemon game where you can only catch the first pokemon you see on a new route, and any time a pokemon faints it’s dead and you can’t use it anymore (more rules to increase the challenge are common but optional). some people do these runs and then build stories around them. comics are traditional bc that’s how the first one told its story, but it’s not the only way to fic it)

Okay, so, the story here is that Connie spent most of her gym career under Whitney, who is obsessed with cute. Whitney was always rather livid that Connie would constantly bring “ugly” Normal types (Raticate, Ursaring, etc) into her adorable pink gym. After a few politely-worded requests to keep things cute, Connie brought Dory out of retirement and took him around everywhere just to add that extra dose of scruffy, gangly, wattles-and-eyebags goodness to the place until Whitney finally formally banned everything but pure-Normal types from the Goldenrod Gym trainer rosters to get him out.

Once I finish out the latest scene in Alterity, I’d like to redo the first few pages to make them flow a little better with the style of the rest of the comic. I’m going to end up showing a few members of Robin’s mom’s team in those pages, so I took some time to doodle some quick refs. She also has a Dodrio, Noctowl, and Gyarados (HM slave), but I don’t think they’ll be shown in-comic.

Completely random question, but if a Trainer wanted to, could they theoretically go out into the wild, find an injured Pokémon, capture them, bring them to a Center and get them healed, and then immediately release them back to their community/family? Seeing as licensed Trainers get free healthcare for Pokémon in their care, could a good Samaritan do this without repercussion in order to help out the locals?

Yeah, they could! It would still cost them in Pokeballs, but it could be done. There’s a lot of things people could be doing in this world that they’re not.

i go through phases where i randomly remember nuzlockes i was reading a couple (read: few) years ago, check up on them, and every time i'm glad to see the new updates on ur comic. i just wanted to drop by and wish you the absolute bestest. hope everything's going swell, and if it isn't, well, i'm manifesting that it'll be swell soon

Is the comic still being written, I love the work in case it is and it's really beautiful.

Yeah, it is, 2020 is just kicking my butt and I do not have anywhere near the energy to draw it or update this blog right now. I wish Alterity had been made by someone with more stamina. Thank you for the kind words :)

How did you learn to draw? Do you have any recommended books/videos/tutorials?

I just started doing it from a young age; I was always awful at it but I liked doing it and just kept at it. I have collections of art tips/tricks here, here, and here. As for books, Jack Hamm’s books are fantastic. I don’t have any favorite online videos; if anyone else has some they found useful then please comment on this post!
