Ahem, Crow stans

Crow did something rash and stupid, and we are allowed to be mad at him. Our guardian is allowed to be mad at him. It doesn’t mean we hate him

The infantilizing of Crow is something that’s been concerning me for a while in the Destiny fandom. He’s a deeply traumatized man, and he’s emotional too, but he’s still strong and capable and powerful. The fact that some people see an emotional male character and immediately go “UwU soft babey need protecting! *hisses at anyone who gets mad at him*” Has always kind of pissed me off.

I’m an emotional guy with diagnosed ptsd. That doesn’t make me a child. I still make mistakes. I’ve had days where I’ve regretfully done things without thinking of the consequences, and on those days I expect people to get mad at me. Similarly, Crow isn’t a child. He made a conscious decision, and it was a bad one. Everyone should be mad at him, or irritated at the very least. Yes, he did it in good faith. That doesn’t excuse the fact that he’s caused us a world of hurt.

Also, even if someone does hate Crow for no reason, who gives a shit. It’s a video game. It doesn’t “say a lot about them, yikes 😬” it means they don’t like a fictional character. Let them live. And if you hate Crow and try to convince people who like him not to, don’t do that, you’re an asshole. I like Crow. Someone in my Raid team hates him and thinks he’s annoying. You know what we do? Kick Riven’s ass together, because we can agree to disagree.

TLDR; Stop infantilizing emotional men and accept the fact that some people will hate characters you like.

On Mara’s Contingencies and Saladin’s cutscene

So I know that I’ve established that I really don’t like Mara as a person on this blog before, and that hasn’t changed this season. However, I still absolutely adore how interesting and complex her character is, and I think I actually understand her better now in light of the new lore/quest elements. I’ve been itching to get some of my thoughts out there, so here we go!

On Mara’s “Contingencies”

I know that the knee jerk reaction to that reveal was “Mara what the fuck” but let’s take a step back and look at this from a couple sides. Because honestly? I can’t say that I wouldn’t have those contingencies too.

Mara may be shady, she may be calculating, she may be egotistical and she might even have a bit of a god complex, but above all of that, she is a leader. And one might argue that you need to be a little bit of all of those things to be any kind of leader at all. Now, I can’t say whether or not Mara is a good leader, I think that’s up to each player individually, and Destiny is a game where morals are never set in stone. But regardless of your opinion, remember: leaders have to be prepared for EVERY eventuality.

Mara is in charge of an entire race. That’s a huge burden. And with a race as old and complicated as the awoken, I’d say it’s a burden that’s nigh impossible for people like us to even comprehend. Mara has been a leader for a long time. I highly doubt she even remembers how to do anything else. To do her job, she has to see EVERYTHING as a threat. Because if she doesn’t, and she gets caught off-guard at any point, everyone and everything in her empire is at risk, and she can’t afford that.

The darkness, The Witness, both of these are dangerous to the nth degree. If any of those that Mara counts as her “Allies” (us, Petra, the Vanguard, Eris, Crow, etc.) become corrupted… Well, it’s her job as Queen to ensure that the threat is eliminated.

If you think back to Saladin’s cutscene where he was talking to Crow, he was faced with a difficult choice, and the one he made had a bad outcome. That cutscene was not telling us that Saladin should have killed the child. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that that’s what he was implying, and I don’t think that’s true at all. I think all he was trying to say is that we can’t know what the future will bring, and sometimes the choices we make will bring about suffering no matter what we do, and all we can ever do is make the choices that we think are right. I think that this sentiment ties back into Mara’s character perfectly.

Mara’s entire job is making choices. It’s a delicate game of sociopolitical Jenga, really. Each choice she makes for her people is another block removed from the tower. One wrong move and it all falls down. That’s why she has those contingencies. Because the more knowledge she has, the more plans she makes, and the closer she keeps her cards to her chest, the better off her and her people are.

To close out this massive novel of an essay I’ve written, I’ll say this: Mara can’t be both a leader and a morally good person. It’s not possible. Similarly, she can never have friends, only allies. She can never have lovers, only assets. Because she has to be prepared to eliminate anyone at any time to keep her and her people safe. She has too much at stake to allow people in to her heart. She can never trust anyone but herself. And I don’t know about you, but that must be one hell of a cold, lonely existence. I don’t like her, but I don’t need to. I understand her.
