Top 20 RotE characters!
My final piece of ranking for this series!
There will be some spoilers in this!
20. Nettle
- If there’s one thing I love, it’s difficult women. Nettle is as harsh as her name suggests. I love young Nettle with her dream magic and how completely kind she is to Thick. And I love older Nettle, who doesn’t mind hurting Fitz’s feeling for Bee’s benefit. She is unforgiving and always strives to do what she thinks is best - even if she doesn’t always know what’s best.
19. Thymara
- Definitely my favourite Rain Wild character. She had my favourite POV in those books as well. I liked how her story paralleled Sintara’s, with her dragon features becoming more beautiful, getting her wings, and her determination to be her own woman. I didn’t love that she ended up with Tats and ended up having a kid with him, but again, it mirrored Sintara’s mating with Mercor.
18. Starling Birdsong
- are we seeing a theme? Starling is so great because she simply does not care if people like her personality. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, and she got her song. The way she destroyed Fitz in Golden Fool was a peak moment in this series. And something i love so much is that no matter how much Fitz complains about her or thinks she’s annoying, he can’t help but like her.
17. Chade Fallstar
- I hate him, I love him, he’s the worst, he’s the best. I’ve said this before - I have complicated feelings about Chade but regardless, they are strong feelings. Ngl, I misjudged his age and thought he was about 80 in the first book so when he made it to the last book?? Incredible. His death got me in a way that I really didn’t expect it to.
16. Dutiful Farseer
- My boy! He had some great development from the most fifteen year old boy ever, to a genuinely good king. I loved his dynamic with Fitz in Fool's Errand. It was really on sight with those two and it was entertaining the entire time.
15. Selden Vestrit
- I saw someone say once that Selden felt like a random npc who managed to get a nat20 on charisma. He's great in Ship of Destiny, and fantastic in the Rain Wild Chronicles. His bond with Chassim was unexpected but so so lovely.
14. Molly Chandler
- I understand why people don't like her. Her character gets in the way of Fitzloved. Soz guys, but I've seen too many female characters get hate because fans were rooting for a mlm ship. Don't get me wrong, its frustrating but Molly never inserts herself in Fitz's life. It the other way around. I think people don't like her less because of who she is and more because of what she represents. She's a simple life, and is the face of Fitz's delusion. But I love her. She's down to earth, she's rough around the edges, she's a simple gal who wants a simple life.
13. Etta
- Etta!!! From a Divvytown prostitute to Queen of the Pirate Isles??? Insane, incredible, showstopping. One thing that I absolutely love about her that I think is overlooked is that, despite how much Kennit was pushing for it and how much Wintrow was pining for her, it did not even cross her mind to get with this 15 year old boy. Kennit is all like 'teach the boys your… skills.' and she's like, ah yes, I will teach him how to use knives. Queen behaviour.
12. Paragon
- Everyone's favourite murderous boat! His dynamic with Amber is great, and his friendship with Brashen is really underrated! He goes from being a grumpy old man to a bratty little boy in seconds (hmmm maybe the similarities between he and Fitz go past the face). He's unpredictable and he will kill again!
11. Althea Vestrit
- I fell in love with her immediately. She's rude to Kyle and then spends the next two weeks sleeping on the floor so she can be closer to Vivacia. She had my heart from the get go. Her ending will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth but none of it is her fault. She starts off a little immature and really grows into a woman worthy of captaining her own ship.
10. Wintrow Haven
- Ship of Magic!Wintrow has my entire heart. He frustrates me to no end with how he treats Vivacia but his arc is insane. He's generally an honourable guy. He frees the slaves and aids in the overthrowing of his father. He becomes a competent sailor and always shows Etta kindness. And despite his corruption by Kennit, he retains his moral compass and grows to be a good guy. I choose to ignore him in Ship of Destiny (just like Robin Hobb oops-) because I don't know who that man is :)
9. Malta Vestrit
- Without a doubt the best Liveships character. She has some of the best development I've ever seen. She's really the Amy March of Bingtown. She's self-centred, annoying, and that girlllllll. I love her so much. She's so clever and achieves so much.
8. Verity Farseer
- MY KING! treated Fitz like a human being which, in this book, is a step up from how most people treat him - especially when he's a boy. He's always a friendly face, even when he's so bogged down by defending the entirety of the Six Duchies with no thanks. He loved very honestly and had great respect for people who deserved it. And in the end, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his people for his folk.
7. Bee Farseer
- She's just as much my daughter as she is Molly's, Fitz's, Nighteyes', and Beloved's. She won me over so quickly, and just when I thought I couldn't love her more, she started biting. I hope one day we see more of her!
6. LadyPatience
- You should have been mine???????? Such a fun, unapologetic character. She is so herself. I feel so seen by her constant, ever-changing hobbies and messy room. She and Lacey are the duo of the century.
5. Burrich
- When I read a book and I fancy a character, I tend to stay loyal to that character. I can love all of the characters, but I only love one. I took one look at Burrich and knew i'd found my man. His parenting skills were questionable at time, but he was doing what he thought was right. He gave up his life to raise Chivalry's son. He stepped up and took care of Molly with no expectations. He raised Nettle like she was his own. Just a solid, good man.
4. Nighteyes
- The best parent in this whole series. He's sarcastic, he's clever, and he's got such an entertaining dry sense of humour. He's a great influence on Fitz and he isn't afraid to call him out. The Wit is such a fantastic aspect of this series and the wit-bond that Fitz and Nighteyes share is so so beautiful.
3. Kettricken
My Queen. I haven't felt this strongly about a character in a long time. Always a beacon of honour in a story of political intrigue, secrets, and betrayal. They really lucked out with this arranged marriage. Not a single person in this story deserved her.
2. Beloved
- Fool, Amber, Lord Golden, Beloved. What a character. every facet of this character is so interesting and deep and beautiful. Amber was THE character in Liveships, the Fool was THE character in Farseer, Beloved with THE character in Tawny Man. THE CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.
Fitz
- You get it.

Top 20 RotE Moments
(Would love to know what everyone else’s favourite moments are! 20 is probs a little bit overkill but there are so many!)
Spoilers for all of RotE under the cut
20. Chade tells Fitz to go after the Servants - Fool's Quest
- Chade infuriates me to no end. But I can’t bring myself to hate him. This moment, where he only has sparing of lucidity, he subtly tells Fitz to go after Bee, even if the King doesn’t allow it. It’s a really lovely moment of two old assassins planning to deceive everyone one last time :)
19. The Quarrel - Golden Fool
- What a scene. This was crazy. Fitz’s rampant denial and homophobia was building up the whole book, and everything came to a boil here. Fitz was ready to give the Fool a piece of his mind, and the Fool completely destroyed him. Deserved. The bit that breaks my heart tho is that the Fool thought the flowers were from Fitz - I can’t with these two.
17. The night in Aslevjal - Fool's Fate
- I was dreading Fitz and the Fool’s reunion after Fitz left him behind, but I was pleasantly surprised by how warmly they greeted each other. After the Golden Fool Divorce, I was so relieved to see them get along. And who doesn’t love a ‘stay with me’ moment?
16. Alise and Cedric reject Hest together in Kelsingra - Blood of Dragons
- Hest kinda went through it in this book and I was worried we were heading down a redemption route. Thank god we got this instead. This was such a satisfying moment.
18. Fitz and Ketrricken mourn Nighteyes - Golden fool
What a lovely moment. I had been waiting for Fitz to fall apart from Nighteyes’ death, and this was probably the healthiest way to deal with it. God, I love Kettricken. I always loved her friendship with Nighteyes and I’m glad she was allowed to mourn as well.
15. The Traders come together to clean the concourse - Ship of Destiny
- Such a small but impactful moment. The traders had really rejected the Vestrits (mostly due to Davad Restart bulldozing their reputation along with his own). And in this moment, they returned to their ruined hall, and they see a lone old woman - whose family is missing and maybe dead - sweeping and continuing their traditions. And slowly, one by one, they all join in and help. No matter what else divides them, they are all Traders.
14. Fitz 'steals' Shrewd's knife and stabs it into Chade’s fireplace - Assassin's Apprentice
- My baby’s first proper act of defiance. I was very proud of my boy. And while Chade can be quite a cold character (the events that led up to this moment are proof of that),, the fact that he never moved the knife also says something about his feeling for Fitz. God, Chade makes me feel so many things.
13. Molly gives birth to Nettle - Assassin's Quest
- “and as prefect as she is, what would she have to cry about?” Why don’t you shoot in the face? This scene broke me. Molly being pregnant was admittedly the most obvious plot twist of all time but the payoff was beautiful. Burrich acted exactly the way I thought he would. And what can I say, I love Molly.
12. Fitz shows Patience his drawing of the dog - Assassin's Apprentice
- I think (it was over a year ago) but I think this was maybe the first time I cried at this series. Fitz is so desperate to do something Patience will be proud of, then he suddenly feels foolish, holding his little piece of paper with a dog on it. And then Patience sees it, asks who drew it, and is so proud of him when he says he did. You should have been mind! Ahh, kill me!
11. Fitz and the Fool reunite - Fool's Errand + Fitz and the fool reunite in Jhaampe - Assassin's Quest
- I had to put these together. They’re both so good, and both are followed by these warm times of relative peace. In AQ, the Fool doesn’t realise it’s Fitz, and in FE, Fitz doesn’t realise it’s the Fool. These bits parallel each other so beautifully and in both, their peaceful time together is broken by a calling from the Farseer crown.
10. Malta negotiates independence for Bingtown - Ship of destiny
- SHE IS THAT GIRL. Malta’s arc was so unbelievably satisfying and I was proud of her here. She had released Tintaglia, saved the satrap and his companion, learned from Kekki, held her own on that ship, and stood up for Bingtown before Kennit and the Satrap. Love Love Love.
9. Bee burns down the scroll library of clerres - Assassin’s Fate
- Ahhhhh!!!!! That’s my baby!!!!! My destroyer!!!! Bee goes through so much for someone so young, and she’s the only one wise enough to know that they must let go of the past. She begins the dragon’s vengeance and brings about the destruction of Clerres. Good for her.
8. You're not dead son - Royal Assassin
- Shut up, shut up, shut up!!!! I cannot do this!!!! The days as the wolf were so well written and this was such an emotional conclusion. Burrich, the man that you are. To see him momentarily set aside his absolute hatred of the Wit to save his boy just showed how much he loved Fitz. It’s the devastating culmination of Burrich’s parenting skills and it broke me in a way that no other scene in this entire series has broken me!
7. Burrich and Swift defeat the stone dragon - Fool's Fate
- if Burrich is gonna do one thing, it’s accept the Wit in order to save a son. This display of strength and love was so beautiful! And I was happy to see Swift have his moment!
6. Kettricken's Speech before the Forge Hunt - Royal Assassin
- Such an underrated scene. Kettricken really comes into her own here. She really becomes the Queen-in-Waiting of the Six Duchies in this moment. She impresses everyone - even Chade. I think this is where Verity falls in love with her, and of course, we get to see Verity slap Regal.
5. Prince FitzChivalry Farseer is welcomed home - Fool's quest
- I WEPT. I could not believe what I was reading. We get Starling’s song - which was such a brilliant moment of payoff for her character. And then, of all people, it’s Chade to walk over to Fitz. A man who is obsessed with secrets is the one to tell Fitz it’s time to do away with disguises and secrets. Oh my godddddd.
4. Nighteyes' last hunt - fool's errand
- I had to reread this scene because I had not at all processed what had happened. I was in public! I was on a train, sat next to a stranger, and there were silent tears running down my face. I love Nighteyes and I knew it was coming eventually, but I was not expecting it in this book. His ‘I was sure you would want to come with me,’ is one of the saddest lines in the whole thing.
3. Fitz, Beloved, and Nighteyes become go into the stone wolf and become one being - Assassin’s Fate
- what am I supposed to do with this? This was perfect and devastating. It was where they were always heading towards. Love without limits.
2. Fitz brings the fool back from the dead - Fool's Fate
- Imagine merging souls and calling him by your own name and calling him your dream, believing you can’t go on without him, and uprooting fate with love and passion and bringing him back to life. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
1. The Stone Dragons awake / Fitzloved kiss - Assassin's Quest
- The moment the first trilogy built up to. This moment seared these books onto my heart. From Verity’s sacrifice, Kettle’s redemption, Starling getting the story for her song, Kettricken fully becoming Sacrifice and getting pregnant, the Fool seeing his prophecy become fulfilled and kissing Fitz, and Fitz using the Wit to awake the stone dragons and saving the Six Duchies from the Red Ship Raiders!!!!!!! A perfect ending!

Ok, here are something thoughts about Assassin’s Fate :)
I have mixed feelings. Overall, this was a wonderful book with a lovely and devastating ending. But there were some things that bothered me. (It’s still a 5 star book to me but I’m a nitpick)
Things that bothered me first.
There were a lot of characters in this book, and Fitz’s perspective was too limited for them to earn their place in the story.
Kennitsson bothered me the most. His could have been a story of him rejecting the legacy of his father and trying to make things right. There was hints of him trying to be his own man but his character was not explored enough for me to really care when he eventually sacrifices himself for Paragon.
A lot of the other Liveship characters suffered from this as well. It was so nice to see Althea, Brashen, Wintrow, Etta and Clef again, but after the initial excitement, it kind of became a sort of… now what? Paragon’s return was the only one that really felt impactful because he actually has a purpose in the story.
Out of the youngsters that join Fitz and Beloved, Spark and Per were fun characters but can someone please tell me what Lant’s purpose in this story was? Spark and Per are fun little reflection of baby Fitz (an assassin’s apprentice and a stableboy) and they both did stuff, but I feel like I spent this entire story waiting for Lant to do something!!! I like him as a character but why was he there????
The one other thing that bothered me was the fake out death from Fitz in the tunnel. My guy had already been shot by the worm dart. He was dying either way. If anything, I think it would have been way more impactful for him to get back to Buck with Bee - all the while Nighteyes is trying to tell him somethings wrong. Fitz, who acts delusional as if he’s getting paid to do so, dismisses the worries and think he’s won, all for him to finally accept it once he sees Bee safe again in Buckkeep. Idk, I just always hate an unnecessary death fakeouts.
But let’s stop being so negative because this book had so much good in it!!!!
Fitz encountering the Paragon was a moment I’ve been waiting for since Amber carved his face and it did not disappoint!! I too would threaten anyone who tried to take Amber from me - Paragon, you’re a real one.
Paragon in general was a joy. Him turning into a dragon was a real bittersweet moment (because it left Althea and Brashen without their ship and took away their escape route from Clerres) but if anyone deserved to choose his own fate, it was him. The revelation of what wizardwood is was so haunting in Liveships, and to see them reclaim their proper form was incredible.
Also, we know Mercor was Maulkin, and I’m a firm believer of the Heeby/Shreever theory (cause if I accept she never made it I will simply die :)), and to know that Tarman (who was improved with Sessurea’s corpse) maybe decided to become a dragon as well, therefore reuniting the three main serpents from liveships, makes me so unbelievably happy.
Moving away from the Liveship characters, god I love Bee. I love Bee much. What a gal. She is so like her mother and three fathers (her parentage is completely insane). I loved her relationship with Wolf Father - who was a better father than Fitz or the Fool, and he is a dead wolf :).
Had it not been for Vindeliar, she fully would have escaped on her own. Dwalia was no where near a match for my girl. She out here biting people and running away and being cryptic. What I loved most, was that she manages to overcome the one thing that has always gotten the best of fitz - she was able to let go of the past. She got the real vengeance against clerres and the servants by burning the scrolls. Without her, Fitz would not have reminded the dragon’s of what the servants did to them, and they never would have come to finish what she started. She is the character ever. The destroyer.
Beloved was a character Ihad complicated feelings about in this book. I need to make it very clear, I love him. I love this character with all my heart. However, there were times in this that I didn’t like him very much. I know that’s because we’re seeing him through fitz’s perceptive (and fitz does not like Amber) and because he has gone through so much, but it still made me a little sad. Obviously, he’s not gonna be his old self when he’s heading back to the place where he was imprisoned and tortured for twenty years, and I can’t blame him for that.
He still had some incredible lines and moments though, and I’ll always be a sucker for Fitzloved.
That brings us to Fitz. Jeez man. He is my favourite character of all time. There is no question about it. No one else even comes close. He acts admirably in this book, and I really feel like he had grown so much since being the loner who lived in a cottage in the forest. He wasn’t always the best father, but in this quest, he did his very best. I’m proud of him.
To me, he will always be that little boy :’)
This story was always going to end with him dying - if that’s how you wanna view him going into the wolf. Fitz is incapable of staying out of the world of Buckkeep politics. He can’t run from a fight, or from the crown, or from who he is. He was never going to be able to settle down and have a simple life - as much as he deserves one.
And of course, we had to have one frustrating piece of miscommunication between fitz and the fool.
‘He hasn’t offered to come into the wolf with me so I won’t ask him.’ vs ‘He hasn’t asked me to go into the wolf with him so i won’t offer to.’
God these guys will put me into an early grave. I adore them.
Bee literally had to shout at Beloved to stop being stupid, he obviously loves you!!!! God.
And that final line… Fitz, Beloved, and Nighteyes, joined as one, watching over Bee from the shadows. And Kettricken smiling knowingly.
I think the mountain kingdom will be a better place for Bee than Buckkeep. It’s nice to see a Farseer finale sort of escape that pull. And I would trust Kettricken with my life so I hope she’s up to the task.
Yeah

My brain simply will not process that I have finished RotE. What do you mean I don’t have another 900 page book to read about Fitz being sad? I had all these plans for what I was gonna read next but I can’t face it yet. So I will be rereading name of the wind for the 1000th time until my mine starts working again :)

Realm of the elderlings ask meme thing
There's nothing I love more than ranking my favourite things! (I have not finished Assassin's Fate yet so things could maybe change)
Favourite Rote book: Royal Assassin
Why: This is the one that took me the longest to read. It paints Buckkeep so vividly, I felt like I was walking down its corridors alongside Fitz. Assassin's Apprentice serves to set up the story, and then by Assassin's Quest, everything has changed. And then, even when we get back to Buckkeep in Tawny Man, nothing is the same. Royal Assassin feels the most like home.
You've got Fitz bonding with Nighteyes, you've got Kettricken as Queen-in-Waiting alongside Verity, you've got an ailing King Shrewd, you've got peak sneaky old man Chade, you've got Patience and Lacey, you've got Fitz and the Fool becoming friends, you've got Burrich being a questionable but earnest parental figure, you've got the messiest teenage relationships, you've got political intrigue, and fun witted shenanigans, and all the things I love most about this series.
And the backdrop of the RedShip War is so compelling. It does what Piebalds don't do quite as well in Tawny Man. The threat lingers so heavily and is intertwined in everything that happens.
And it has one of the most well written endings I've ever read. The way everything comes together is insane. From Shrewd dying to Fitz being resurrected. His time in nighteyes' body is a masterpiece and an achievement of writing.
Top three favourite characters: Fitz, Beloved, Nighteyes (It feels wrong to not also mention Kettricken and Burrich here because I love them SO MUCH)
Top three least favourite characters: Dwalia, Ellik, Greft
Favourite ship of the floating kind: Paragon or Vivacia - I can't decide! You can't make me!
Top 3 ships of the people kind: Fitzloved, Alise x Leftrin, and Burrich x Chivalry x Patience - though also have a soft spot for Molly and Burrich.
Would you rather be witted or skilled: Being Skilled would probably be so much more practical, but Witted.
If you were witted, what animal would you bond with: a lazy little cat
Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six duchies, Bingtown, the Rain wilds, Kelsingra, Jamailia, the Pirate isles or Mercenia/Fool's homeland?: This feels like the wrong answer, but its the Six Duchies for me. The descriptions of Buck remind me so much of where I grew up in the cold by the sea. it feels familiar.
How were you introduced to the books: My mum!
Share a quote you love:
'Come, hunt with me, the invitation whispers in my heart. Leave the pain behind and let your life be your own again. There is a place where all time is now, and the choices are simple and always your own.
Wolves have no Kings.
-Royal Assassin, Epilogue
I think I've seen most of my mutuals do this. If you haven't, consider this me tagging you! and anyone else who wants to do it! xx
