Jesse Wente (from the documentary Reel Injun) successfully takes down everything wrong with Contrapoints's racist, tonedeaf and dismissive take on John Wayne's influence.
I don’t know anything about Contrapoints. But I’m really tired of white Youtube personalities making anti-native racism a joke or a punchline and dismissing it.
I’m also really tired of these same supposedly “progressive” people not acknowledging or apologizing for overstepping boundaries, participating in racism, and just turning a blind eye to it rather than try to do better.
Like honestly it has been a pretty rough couple of months for Native people and then to have celebrities or Youtubers with massive platforms pull this disrespectful stunt without even thinking about the indigenous people on the same social media platform is pretty exhausting.
And yes, that’s Jeff Barnaby, the man who created Rhymes For Young Ghouls. To my knowledge she hasn’t reached out to him either.
In addition to her TERF rhetoric because Indigiqueer, gender nonconforming and Two Spirit relatives have existed in our communities throughout history and were the first targets of hate and death from European settlers. She would hate us.
reminder to (if you can!) braid your hair today; the Rising Hearts organisation have asked for everybody who can braid their hair to do so today for Cole Brings Plenty. a young native American man who was found murdered with his hair cut in a hate crime. on their Instagram, Rising Hearts stated:
On Monday, April 8th, wear your braids. Show your braids. Indigenous or not, wear a braid, wear 2 braids, wear many. We wear braids as a community for Cole Brings Plenty and his family. For all indigenous peoples with braids. For the many, past and present, whose braids were cut and attacked. If you don't have hair to braid, share others posts or this post on Monday. Tag @rising_hearts #BraidsForCole
Our hair is sacred. Braids are sacred. Connects us to our ancestors, to community, to ceremony.
Cole Brings Plenty, 27, Lakota, actor (Yellowstone spinoff 1923, and more), family member, and student, was taken from Unči Maka 🌍 too soon. An indigenous relative was taken.
Join Rising Hearts on Monday as we honor Cole's life by braiding our hair in his memory, for all the sacred hair and braids in our communities. Lay some tobacco down. Send up your prayers.
We send our love and support to the Brings Plenty family and his communities. This is a tragic and heartbreaking loss. Justice for Cole. 🤎🪶
Unpopular opinion but I fully support making Non-Native white people as uncomfortable as possible consuming "problematic" media that depicts anti-Native racism.
I was invited to talk on Native Calgarian's podcast. In this episode we talk about Nex Benedict, the lack of media coverage when it comes to anti-Native racism and violence, and the Brian Smith getting life in prison for the murders of Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk. Obviously not an easy episode to listen to. Do it when you have the right mindset
Nex Benedict — a nonbinary, Native American, 16-year-old sophomore — was reportedly beaten to denath on February 7 by three older female students in the bathroom of Owasso High School in Oklahoma. The school refused to call an ambulance for the injured teen and didn’t inform police of the attack until Benedict was later admitted into the hospital — they died from their injuries the next day.
