YouTube any student's bestie during independent learning
(YT) 2 in Quarantine: Your Teacher YouTube
A student raises their hand but the room is silent. What used to be an open classroom discussion feels suffocating as silence rings through their head. There is no comforting nod from the teacher or your friends; no chattering in the hallways or in another classroom. It feels as if they were put on the spot. In this space there is only you and you alone. Welcome to the new normal for our education where our teachers are doing the best to their abilities, but accommodating students like in the face-to-face environment just couldn’t be replicated perfectly. As time passes into the early hours of 3am and a student doesn’t understand a learning material due later at 7am, what miracle do you think will help them in finishing their outputs on time?
“YouTube is the most popular video platform on the planet”, like all social media platforms it lets you upload your own content as your viewers like, share, and comment freely. Essentially, it has been known to cater towards the field of entertainment and somewhere you can spend your breaks without feeling time pass you by. People watch vlogs, episodes, music videos, compilation videos, funny videos and so much more, that you would be considered lying if you claimed that you’ve never spiraled into YouTube’s recommendation algorithm at 2am. In the past year, people were stuck at home struggling through day to day life in this pandemic. Students and teachers alike were stumbling to gain a foothold unto a new normal for learning.  A study by Pearson Education (2010) states that YouTube can and is the most common social media platform to communicate and reach out to students, which could be considered self-explanatory as channels like Khan Academy, TED-Ed, and YouTube learning have guided students in their learning endeavors timelessly. The evolution of learning technologies has progressed rapidly and massively through the years – from hieroglyphics, to the abacus, to typewriters, to the first computer, and then the Dynabook, to E-textbooks, to Apple, tablets, smartphones, and Google. YouTube with its engaging recorded lectures, podcasts, and vlogs from people who’ve studied themselves into professionals and its comprehensive use of the show-not-tell strategy has opened the gates to the next stage of our systems for education.
The freely accessible video sharing platform has made a name for itself in the educational world through the years. It is known to be a form of alternative learning, broadening the understanding of a student outside the lecture time frame of a classroom session. What makes YouTube learning so magical is its added flexibility and self-paced learning that one could easily control with a simple click rewinding or doubling the speed of the video. YouTube has made learning so much easier in so many different ways, while showing the instructions on how to do so. It enhances the learning experience of the student and the teachers, hitting more birds with one stone than we realize. Paired with the right applications – Google Classroom and other Google apps, E-learning and virtual teaching is made powerful. There are a lot of ways YouTube is maximized in these times of remote learning. Teachers have used YouTube as additional reference materials; a usual additive after a reading material. It has made student collaboration possible, letting students discuss or use whiteboard applications to share ideas after watching a video. Through various animations and illustrations, it allows students to comprehend complex topics, making microlearning possible which ensures that complex topics and lessons are delivered in smaller, easier to understand, and easier to remember concepts and understanding. In letting students make their own YouTube videos they are also met with feedback from different people online, opening their minds to ideas on how to improve their work. YouTube is special and makes itself standout as a medium for learning, because of how it lets people make teaching these concepts for free their primary motive. Teachers and students are free to record themselves explaining a different topic to help themselves in terms of retention and methods, but the same recorded video provides clarity and guidance for millions of others who are struggling past the same topic. It has become a habit for students and teachers to turn to YouTube in times where they need assistance.
It is also important to note that with the new form of learning that is heavily dependent on technology, there is a bare minimum amount of digital literacy that is needed in order to efficiently and effectively adapt to our educational environment at the moment. Through these academic years teachers will practice and try different applications that their students will have to adapt to in different situations. Not only that but we are all expected to develop key traits like time management, self-discipline, motivation, and organization of spaces where we study and work. All fears can be thrown out the window, because YouTube has videos that will help all parties in learning new skills and basic concepts when needed. They say that 70% of Millennial YouTube users use the application as their number one go-to for how-to tutorials. The scope of this statistic might have been limited to a certain age group, but it is never too late or too early to learn something especially on that red app. YouTube videos help in lesson plans, study tips and habits, the right applications to use, or even videos that are designed to help you relax or focus; this makes the possibilities for learning boundless and the availability of the help perennial and easily obtainable.
YouTube videos are a timeless means for instruction. Teachers who’ve provided clarity and instruction for their students a decade ago are still helping and providing assistance for students now and for years to come. Combining this with being mindful of smart online practices and vigilance, you will no doubt get the information and understanding that you once lacked before opening the application. So if you’re feeling a bit lost in anything related to the new learning environment look it up! There is a high possibility of finding a YouTube video waiting to help you through the whole predicament.

Ever heard of underwater rainbows?
Coral Reefs: Preserving Underwater Rainbows
After days of rain, gray skies, and utter gloom, stretches a band of vibrant colors all the way across the sky. This being a sign that dark times have passed, to a point where one can’t help but crack a smile upon sight of it. Elated are we when we see these multicolored arcs fixed unto the sky above, yet unaware of the same psychedelic life living underwater. The Coral Triangle, one might say is the splash of color within the blue abyss of South East Asia; home to marine life of the same unique patterns, shapes, and sizes. Now, a new crisis has come afloat: imagine the ocean floor strewn with the white skeletons of these corals instead of abundant life.
In reality corals are translucent, they get their color from an algae (Zooxanthellae) that lives in their tissue whose job is to make 90% of the coral’s energy from the sun. But due to various factors, when put under stress, corals evict these algae thus the phenomena called coral bleaching. The main antagonist, 11 billion pieces of plastic, are killing the coral reefs all around the world. In nature, only 4% of corals suffer from disease, yet this jumps to a whopping 89% when they encounter plastic pollution. Plastics actually affect the coral’s resilience and state in many ways: smothering the coral ridding it of sunlight that leads to diseases; opening wounds with sharp pieces of plastic allowing bacteria to enter; or acting as a raft for pathogens spreading them to other corals. In summary, plastic pollution along with rising temperatures, coral predation, and others cause stress on the reef which eventually lead to death.
Spanning 6 million km², the Coral Triangle is like an environmental lottery win harboring 76% of the world’s coral species here. The Philippines being at the apex of this triangle shares the most fertile part with Indonesia. And although the “Pacific guardian” has been blessed with such rich waters, as of 2015, the Philippines is known to be the 3rd largest contributor of plastic waste in our oceans worldwide. According to the Asian Development Bank in 2014 the Philippines has announced a national plan of action that involves capacity building, sustainable financing schemes, and public awareness, but until now we still have not fully grasped the value of our waters’ biodiversity. It is best to remember that more than 2000 species of fish consider the Coral Triangle their home. This includes 15 regionally endemic species of fish, 6 out of 7 of the species of marine turtles, and other fishes like the blue whale, dolphins, dugong and more.
In a crisis, there is never really a perfect solution, a wise man once said “A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor”. It takes time, practice, and effort for us to solve a problem as big as pollution. Taking action bit by bit will build up to be something greater. Let not the plastics that we used once backlash on the colorful seas forever.

What is a narcissist?¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What do you value most?
When the party gets too rowdy, when you're waiting for someone and people pass in a blur, when you’re stuck in the house of a relative for a family gathering for the rest of the day, are all examples of social situations you just wish you had a portal out of at any given moment as an introvert. It’s when the fatigue builds up and your mind starts to spiral that it becomes difficult to deal with people and it feels as if they speak a different language when they approach you for some Smalltalk. The thing is, in all these given events, there is always a less concealed salvation. In the form of wires clad in rubber connected to small bud-like speakers, or even the house stereo, one can simply shut the world out while bringing the world that they hear to life.
“When words fail music speaks” music has always delivered when a lot of us have fallen short. For an adolescent who experiences thousands of mood swings a day, the varying beats and notes have been my companion 24/7. It sets the mood for when I study, party, chill, or even when frustrating nights of sleep paralysis strike. Music is a versatile entity that can be inserted into any given situation. Aside from that, in a stage in my life full of confusion, it is this protean concoction of sounds that brings me comfort. I will be forever grateful for those artists who have gone through so much to create anthems that resonate with me.
The incident at the tower of Babel is incomparable to music, for it is known to be man’s universal language. It can tell stories better than I can string words together for my essay while making someone bop their head in the process. There is a reason why music is present in every movie production. For each human emotion, present in a story being told, as different actions pave the way to events fundamental to a plot, there is a song ready to emphasize each specific aspect of our humanity. I find the ability of music to bring people together quite mind boggling. Can you believe songs like despacito, baby shark, gangnam style, and others were even a thing? Those songs had barely a word of English in them and yet they go down in history as legendary hits.
It was music that calmed the sea, bonded with the moon, looked at the stars, and pulled me out of insanity when I needed it most.

”It’s raining cats & dogs!” is what the Lord probably said to their angels when my elder siblings were born. They always told me
that being different should be embraced, I wonder if that’s where they got it from. Just from their MBTI you could tell how different they are. My brother is “feeling” which means he follows his heart and emotions, while my sister is “thinking” which means they are logical and objective. They are also known to be the best at different things among us siblings. My brother won awards and recognition in dance and my sister did the same, but in the field of speech and debate. When I share my interests with them my brother and I talk about comic book heroes, Sci-Fi novels, and anime. As for my sister and I we discuss representation in media, video essays, and current events. But their uniqueness isn’t anything bad, it just makes them better elder siblings with different life experiences. They’re both great role models, and not once have they failed me in any way. What matters most is how we all get along as siblings despite how different we all are.

Doomscrolling || October 2018
DOOMSCROLLING Definition
With our everyday lives being shrouded in melancholy, people seem to be digging their graves while surfing deeper and deeper online. Doomscrolling is when an individual spends an excessive amount of time online keeping up with the latest news of damnation. It was a term made popular by journalist Karen Ho the “Doomscrolling Reminder Lady,” by tweeting periodic reminders to close the app. Covid-19 being the main antagonist of this modern day and age, has been the cause for us to close our social media platforms, which was once the source of our happiness and inspirations. The irony of a time of uncertainty is that even if people are told to “look at the bright side” of a certain situation, they seem to gravitate towards the more distressing news
