THE VIETNAM WAR (2017, dir. Ken Burns and Lynn Novick)
Episode Ten: “The Weight of Memory” (March 1973 – Onward)
Some 400,000 [Vietnamese refugees] eventually made it to America, where they settled in nearly every state – industrious, entrepreneurial, more eager to take part in American political life, and more likely to become American citizens than other immigrant groups from Asia. But for that first generation of Vietnamese-Americans, memories of their homeland could never be erased.

On January 13, 1958, a nose, two fingertips and a penis were discovered in an oil vat in Northern Tokyo. A disfigured body, burned by acid, was found nearby the next day. Watabe followed this sinister murder mystery to its uneasy conclusion, producing a set of photos which may well have been stills from a forgotten film noir classic.
