:: How to get your piece in an artists portfolio::: #ONE OF THE MOST COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS I see in tattooing is putting every meaningful aspect of your idea into one tattoo, or knowing exactly the way you It’s understandable to want to have as much thought and meaning into what you adorn your body with, after all, tattoos are permanent( not to mention very expensive)! However this approach is not always conducive to a good tattoo or one that will have the longevity we hope to achieve in the long run. I try to approach each piece by thinking of the “core” idea or essence of the piece we are working towards. In this case, the piece was speaking to the passing of time and his children. Simple enough idea that needs very few elements to work. The first draft (swipe to see) however, had almost 20 different specifications of where and how each element of the tattoo should be done. Any time designs are THIS specific, it’s crippling to the creativity we can use as artists to not only make the piece work on the body part you want(this piece is on a very difficult part of the body to make a great design on) , but making it work as a piece of art in general. As much as I like to do what my clients want, it’s much more important to do what the piece needs and what I know from my years of experience will make a successful design. Unfortunately, this requires me to often make significant changes that can scare a client that has a very specific idea of what they want. Thankfully in the end, I was given the freedom to do what I thought would work the best for this piece and we both walked away more pleased with it. The point is if you trust someone to tattoo you, it stands to reason you should trust them to interpret your core idea into a striking tattoo for you. I’m not saying Let someone change your idea entirely, that’s not always necessary. it is important however to be aware of the essence of an idea and design according to that.
