same but different
Walking down the sandy steps
Bare feet slowly swallowed by warm, sunsoaked sand
We sat on a picnic blanket in the shade of a tree
Ocean salt and summer heat filling our hearts
The beach was all too familiar
But as we grew
Each year it felt a little different
It meant something a little more
Crashing waves the background music
To our hushed conversation
Echoes of laughing children playing a the shore
The sea slowly ticking away
We watched the shoreline creep up the beach
Before returning out to sea
It felt warm and peaceful,
The smell of the sea bringing back years of memories
The same beach
The same time
Every year
-
As we sat,
The world slowly turned itself over
Families left, couples came to watch the sun say goodnight
A cold began to set in
We put on the soft jackets we brought
Huddled a little closer
And somehow felt a little warmer
Than with the midday sun
The shore slowly made its way out,
Then back in
No longer were children and loud families surrounding us
No longer was the sun causing drips of sweat on our brow
Now we sat in silence as we watched the world sleep
From our little spot, on our little beach
Careful not to wake them
And as we sat under the stars
The beach meant something else
Something more than ever before
