Vegeta As A Gun/Vegeta As A Bomb world is like Incredible . For my own personal interests. Everybody has different fighting styles based on their training and other abilities obviously and this is a very fun part of the story! Like “oh hey cool (x) used (y), that’s (z)’s move” is always nice. But Vegeta was very specifically trained to be A Weapon

In this way that nobody else really… was. And in a way that nobody really emulates except Gotenks, a little. Vegeta is a capable martial artist but like. He can DESTROY PLANETS FROM ORBIT and could have destroyed Earth. I think he probably relied a lot on the whole giant ape thing for like Melee at that point. like. wouldn’t you. if you could make a fake moon and just do it whenever you felt you needed to. you’d be a tiny but relatively sturdy gunbomb and then you’d have an unstoppable* tank mode. You don’t neglect your Base Form but you also don’t… plan around using it exclusively. Y’know. Goku would have died permanently if Yajirobe weren’t watching from the shadows with a sword. because he was. fighting a carefully groomed weapon of mass destruction. A person who has been dropped on planets alone to kill literally everyone for the past twenty years of his life as one of the only surviving members of his dead species. Serving your childhood through early adulthood as a weapon for the interplanetary warlord who blew up your planet and then lied to you about having done that. “Oh what a shame well it’s a good thing you’re still alive because you reeeeally are remarkable. Aren’t you? :)” #justvegetathings

You become his favorite reusable powerful explosive device. You become his Favorite Gun (i will make the Favorite Gun post eventually this is. the precursor. to the Favorite Gun post) but really a number of your climactic Moments in the story are self-destructions. It’s funny, you can sort of… follow his development using The Times He Expends As Much Energy As He Possibly Can to Destroy Everything Around Him as benchmarks.

And I mean the Majin influence on his body is sort of “harnessed” by him to a degree, but also like. He is visibly strained by the possession. I think it’s reasonable to say that it pushes him over a sort of edge and that he couldn’t Survive this very familiar Way of Releasing Energy because… there was a little too much, y’know? I don’t think he killed himself accidentally though, I think he knew what would happen, and I think he felt it was the only way to Take Responsibility for what he’d done to allow this to come to pass in service of his own selfish desires. What else could he do but give everything he has and more to try and put an end to the creature that’s already killed most of the planet? To finish what he started if you believe he allowed himself to be controlled (and I do)

It’s a very “lose the battle, win the war” impulse, but it’s what allowed him to keep his body in the afterlife and return to Earth. It’s a neat little bow out of the thread of his figurative And Literal self-destructive tendencies throughout the narrative. like yes it was For Nothing, in the short term. But it didn’t mean nothing. It’s part of transforming into something that he is only just Beginning to understand - a being that protects instead of destroys! He’s starting to want to Build Up instead of Tear Down you know. It’s natural that the end of a life of destruction comes as a real destruction of the self

It’s neat that within the text Android 18 has an explosive device removed from her body but that Vegeta can’t have his removed. It’s all of him.

A few people have brought this up as a signature writing trait so yup! I'm absolutely obsessed with ki-sense in Dragon Ball and I include it in pretty much every fic, utilising it as a sixth sense.

If you've grown up with another sense it naturally would be well integrated, as is likely the case with the next gen kids (the fighty Saiyan kids especially). The flow of ki and ki signatures would form part of your experience of the world and form your perception of people's identity, just like their face or voice, and changes are something you'd notice. In writing that means calling attention to a character's perception of that change, and adding it to the checklist of potential ways to describe a scene.

The way I write it follows my own experience. I have grapheme-colour synaesthesia (projector type) which means when I read letters and numbers I see them coloured in in a kind of ghostly way. So whilst not a seperate sense it's innate to me so it's always present. I notice when someone's name is very heavy in one colour or phone numbers have colour patterns, or I spot a typo that way. My internal difference engine attends to the difference, just like when I notice movement. I don't switch it on or off, though I can attend to it.

It's such a strong part of Dragon Ball's world building I honestly wish more people used it as a sense and not a technique - for characters with 'fluency', at least (but of course it's creator's choice :) )

"His Majesty can't suddenly tell me what to wear when he gets caught with his khakis on." The high wind stole most of his enunciation, but the sense of his words were threaded through his ki, and Marron's proficient lip reading filled the gaps.

Marron pulled her scarf away from her mouth; she wanted to be precise when telling him off. "No, but I can ask you to and I'm asking you now. We were almost outed. If one of us falls, no matter our precautions it won't be long before we all do, and we're not in the clear yet."

Goten pouted. "Fine, fine. It's dumb to worry about it after literally decades, but if it gets you off my back -" he pulled a black and white woollen ski mask from his back pocket. "I said I didn't have anything, so Gohan gave me this." Marron held Goten's sunglasses as he pulled the mask over his head. The mask had panda markings, complete with rounded ears.

Marron snorted. "So he called your bluff."

Goten snatched the glasses back. He spoke, though with his face covered the wind wiped his muffled words entirely. [Now, Pan in West. Uub join us in West.] he'd layered in ki. Pan had stayed West's Friday night, Uub would meet them there, and Goten was pointedly not rising to the further taunt.

"Then lead the way, Mr Bear," Marron said, recovering her face with the scarf.

With an internal sense that could only have been an eye roll, Goten blasted past her to start the sunward climb, the panda ears waggling in the wind. Marron laughed, then kicked in the push to follow. [...]
