Art by @thedreamscapes, who chose to do actual villain (Ice) and the original villain, Dr. Jeckle. I suggest, if you’re interested, pulling these two guys up and looking at them in parallel. Because it’s pretty cool the contrast. And neat black/white imagry (Thank you, Nico! This is fucking brilliant.)

What happens when your original villain is way too likable and insists he’s the main character? 

You get Jeck. 

When I first debuted the makeshift novel in Writers Club, everyone loved Jeckle. Even though he was really the embodiment of Moral Grey Area. He was a sympathetic villain, even if his motivations were fundamentally questionable and he ultimately was doing really bad shit. I mean, he wasn’t as bad as Ice, but...he was an Assassin. The head Assassin, even. 

Then ...something happened to turn him against the very state that created him. 

But truly, Jeckle’s main goal is tried and true. He is determined to remain immortal. At any cost. He will live to the end of the world. Even if that means he has to end it to ensure it happens.

“He’s the type of person who makes lampshades out of people...” - My high school writer’s club, seven years ago, about Ice. 

Probably thought I was dead, huh? Well, I’m not. And to bring us back into some semblance of activity, have the first of two illustrations by @thedreamscapes . He decided to take on the villain of the story, Issac Emperia, also known as “Ice.” 

Issac Emperia is the son of the emperor, and lives in Emperia City. Ice earned his nickname from an early age, as he had the innate power over water (though it was always frozen at his command). It was said that he killed his mother shortly after he was born...she was said to have frozen to death...There were those who hoped, when the old emperor died, there would be a reprieve. The son, after all, could not possibly be worse than the father...

He had yet to take the mantle as Emperor, beginning instead to assume the role as his father aged. His first decree was to kill all skilled workers and burn down the city of Siazia. 

(That, of course, was his first public decree. His first ever decree was sentencing his best friend to death.) 

As they say in every cliche....You really shouldn’t have done that.

“It itches. Hurts even. Time, crawling along my skin. I want it to stop. For me, for everyone...” -Tic

“It’s my job to keep everyone safe. No one asked me to do it, I just know it is. I see it, just like I see everything.” -”Bot”, the Last Artist. 

We’re back, with @kittykatzvillage ‘s addition to the Project. They took on Tic and “Bot”, two side characters who probably drive the plot of the later books more than the actual main characters do.

Tic, which is short for the Callsign “Chaotic” and who’s real name might be Lauki, used to be a slum rat who lived around Jerichi. Due to some rather unfortunate events, she was one of the first people to survive Hydian and become an Assassin. She has a past with the man who became the feared Dr. Jeckle, though she doesn’t like to talk about it. And may try to cut out your tongue if you ask. She has the ability to control time. An ex-Assassin now, she works with Bot to build the resistance to take down the Emperias, and will do everything in her power to keep the girl alive. 

I did this for you. I came back for you. All I was, all I am...it’s your fault.

Bot, also known as “The Girl in Blue,” is one of the other survivors of the Siazia massacre along with Taka. She was studying to be an Artist, though many believed her to be a reincarnation of a Muse. She also is clairvoyant, and has the ability to see what has happened and what may still come. These things are often the subject of her art.  During the massacre, she encountered Dr. Jeckle, who--in his attempt to kill her--cut off her right hand. She was saved by Tic, and nursed back to health, but both do not know if Jeckle’s poison still lives within her body and how it will manifest if it does. Tic gave her the nickname “Bot” as a slightly off-colored joke about her replacement hand.  

Kind and compassionate, she is the unexpected leader of the resistance against Isaac Emperia, and seems to know more about Taka than the Clockmaker himself.

“Save her.”--The World, to Lene

“I wonder where my father got the idea that I was never going to fight back?” -Nara Silvereye

@kinsara‘s addition (one of two!) to The Book on Fire art project! They tackled the two princesses, Lene and Nara. They also did some of the Emperian Fashion, which will be featured in another post. Kin chose to do character sheets, so outfits and sword details are shown!  

Maybe it’s not fair to call Lene a princess. She’s officially the last of the Emperain Assassins, feared for her psychokintetic powers and her ability to make golem. However, she’s not treated like the other assassins. Issac “Ice” Emperia has refused to allow her to wear the black cloak and utilitarian clothing.In fact, Ice controls almost everything in Lene’s life, including sending ice gremlins to watch her at all times.  something that the other Assassins (especially Ashmore) take note of. Ashmore is the first person to utter the words “Save Her,” which would later become the rallying cry for the remaining assassins. After all, Isaac Emperia wishes to make Lene his queen; who will the Assassins follow? 

Perhaps, in the end, Lene will save herself. 

Nara really is a princess, specifically the heir to the throne of the Northern Country. However, after disagreeing with all of her father’s edicts and how he chose to rule, Nara found herself exiled (Might have had something to do with the army she was building to support a coup...). Forced to flee, she found herself taken in by the Southern Traders, and, in turn, Hana. Nara seeks those who are loyal to her cause. She also wishes to help destroy the Emperian Empire, something she was working on with the royal family of Alyonia. But now their princess has gone missing and the country silent, leaving Nara to take on this task "alone” (At least until she meets Thirteen and the others),

This will be the only group who’s quote will be one I didn’t write. But honestly, oddly enough, Owl City’s Vanilla Twilight might just be the only way to describe Mikael and Sofia. This beautiful piece was done by the wonderful @amara-sessh. They decided to draw Mikael and Sofia together, as they should be and never are. 

Also, this post contains a bit more plot than usual. 

Mikael is the priest of Nare-Anna, a small community on the boarder of Emperia. He happens to be the only priest, so he’s the caretaker to the community’s pantheon. He, himself, does not really believe in any of the gods, but has devoted his time and effort to keeping the community together. His temple serves as a place of worship, a town hall, and on rainy days, somewhere to hold the farmers market and elder’s quilting circle. And that was all well and good, thank you, until a woman showed up and asked to live in the choir loft. 

That woman was Sofia. 

Sofia was a teacher at Siazia, specifically in healing and medicine. However, one day, she mysteriously vanished (read: was kidnapped). She was taken to the Emperian testing facility called Hydian labs, where she was experimented on in their attempts to create a “godly being.” Instead they created a rather irate woman with wings. Sofia escaped, and ended up in the care of Mikael. But during her stay at Hydian, she attracted the attention (and desires of) one Dr. Jeckle. Upon her escape, he was sent to find her, a task he both wonderfully succeeded at (he found her within 10 hours, fifteen minutes, and 23 seconds of her escape, give or take) and horrendously failed (he never actually told anyone where he found her). 

I wish I could say that Mikael and Sofia lived happily ever after with Jeckle showing up for tea once and awhile, but that’s just not how it goes. 

Sofia wasn’t supposed to die, really. Mikael was. But instead, Sofia died, Mikael was blinded, and Jeckle constantly wondered how everything went so wrong. 

But he’s determined to keep Mikael alive now.

“Don’t go to school! School is awful, it’s worthless. You’ll make your final project and it’ll turn out to be a fucking stone that makes you immortal. My education did nothing for me but make me miserable!” - The Alchemist Lockheart. 

@kagedbird‘s contribution to The Book on Fire Art Project! Hana of the Southern Traders and The Alchemist Lockheart (Without and With his cloak!) . Aka the “Tired of your Shit” Squad. 

Hana is the single most powerful leader of the Southern Traders, a group of people with no alliances. They are made up mostly of the survivors of the Elemental War and those who have broken from all other countries and come to find the traveling group “home.” While there are many different factions and caravans, when they all come together once a year, Hana is the one every caravan leader looks to for guidance. She is also the guardian of Nara, the exiled princess from the North. Many say that Hana intends to fight by Nara’s side to take back the North and return Nara to her place on the throne. But that would be crazy talk, wouldn’t it?  

Lockheart is immortal and impervious to death, illness, and most bits of physical harm. This is due to an accident while he was in school at Siazia, some...maybe four hundred years before the actual story. Long tale short, he made a philosopher's stone and now can't seem to get rid of the damn thing. Turns out, when he made it, he encased the condition that no person who craves immortality to can have it. This comes much to the disappointment of Dr. Jeckle, who would do anything to be immortal.  Lockheart is widely assumed to be the last alchemist, and is desperately searching for someone to take both his trade and the stone. He would just like to sleep. And for Jeckle to stop bothering him. His actual name is unknown.    

Hana and Lockheart would probably get along.

“I can’t fight! I’m a Clockmaker! And not a very good one! The one clock I’m known for doesn’t even tick right! What good is a clock that doesn’t tick!”-- Kenji “Taka” Takashi. 

The first of many Book on Fire Art Project illustrations! Starting off with @ofpaintedflowers breathtaking take on Ashmore (left) and Taka (Right). There’s so much of their characters into these pictures, it’s amazing! 

Ash is an (ex) assassin, who broke away after being accused of a murder he didn’t actually commit. He’s on the run, trying to find a safe place to be for him and his boyfriend, Ryn. He’s also trying to come to terms with the fact that his actions have never been justified, and that maybe, just maybe, everything he’s done so far is wrong. He, like Taka, is a fire elemental, and he uses chackra and fire as his main weapons. 

Taka is the (as far as he’s aware) only survivor of the destruction of Siazia, a once-great school so prosperous that it was almost its own country. He is the holder of a mysterious artifact called the “Chaos Watch,” which only seems to work right before disaster hits. He has no weapon proficiency and it’s rumored that his fire is unable to burn people. Despite all that he’s been through, he tries his best to see the best in people. He’s also, technically, the main character of the novel. 

They’re not twins. It’s something much worse than that.

Artist Drew Spatt was our underclassmen in high school when the first rendition of The Book on Fire came about. Back then, it was called Thirteen. He drew the first ever fan art of the characters, and when The Book on Fire art project started, we were quick to ask if he wanted to draw some of the characters again. He was asked to draw Malia and Dmitri. 

While this is not his “official” art of Dmitri, he certainly did capture the  “ Kind little cinnamon bun with powers over ice” perfectly.
