Snake booiii

Has a special fondness for the gemstone tourmaline. He likes their variety.

Had a friend as a youngster he scared off when his condition was accidentally triggered. Closed off completely after that.

Hates when he sheds. It's itchy, and the skin peels get everywhere if he doesn't get it all off in one go.

Fantasizes about burning his parent's house down. Doesn't for legal reasons.

Was very concerned when the company offered him a position as security, he feared dealing with unpleasant people might set him off. Then realized he's done so most of his life anyway, without it happening. Found that the challenge is a good way to practice and maintain control. It's rare, but when any unruly guest does enter the company, they're easy to scare off. And he's pretty good at it. Elise has helped a lot, too. Thanks to her, he handles IT instead of people on bad days.

Dren:

Once went on an outing with his first clutch to train hunting. Lost one of them in the forest, panicked, and spent two hours looking for the lil rascal. Found her soundly sleeping back home. Kid snuck back home to nap while dad wasn't looking.

A part of him doesn't like killing, but will do so without hesitation if necessary. He doesn't exactly feel guilty, but he does spend a little longer bathing when he needs to get blood off his hands.

If his world was a little better, would probably be a librarian/teacher or something.

Sometimes climbs trees to get out of the way of any passerbys he may come across. Waits quietly and unnoticed until they've passed. He just doesn't want to deal with the stares.

When by himself, his spider-half sort of takes over. Uses this to numb himself, so he doesn't have to deal with feeling alone.

Interested in humans for obvious self-preservation reasons, but also just genuinely finds them fascinating. They're like him, just without the spider part.

Morgan:

Is actually very interested in magic, and what they can do with it. While proficient, they're slightly bummed that their current abilities don't extend much beyond emotional manipulation.

Not a big fan of swimming, but can do so if necessary.

Likes watching fire. Don't give them a reason to light one in a place that's not a campsite.

They won't show it, but they do get overwhelmed and exhausted by being constantly vigilant. Sometimes just seals themself off in an impossible-to-access-unless-you-can-scale-walls burrow for a few days to recuperate.

Is wrecked with anxiety. Unfortunately coping by turning that energy into dangerous hostility. Self-defense, and all that.

Very, very efficient persistence predator. Doesn't matter if it's a meal, an enemy or a sentry. Instant gratification is nice, but they do enjoy the long game too.

Oh, but what if the reader return his feelings? I feel like it would be funny if the reader felt that Irwin wouldn't feel the same way for any reason and that he was so close to them was just because that's how he acts with all his friends/they were afraid of rejection, but they still wanted to have something special between them so they were happy with the Work Spouse joke and went far with it, what If they were encouraged after Irwin talk with and confessed to him?

Something like this:

"What do you mean you didn't know?!"

It's not unlike Irwin to throw a tantrum over miniscule things for the sake of drama. That much you know. What you didn't know, is he is capable of doing so, without it being one of his many bits. You'd perhaps wish he didn't feel the need to get up from the park bench and drag you with him, because he simply can't contain his energy.

"Well, you're like this with everyone!" You argue, regaining your balance from the sudden pull. "I thought-"

Irwin scoffs, unable to halt his interruption from pure indignation.

"No I'm not! I hug and kiss my friends a lot, sure. But I don't vault over the fuckin' moon whenever Damien kisses my cheek or whatever. It's nice," he urges. "But I don't get giddy, flustered and frustrated about it."

"Frustrated," you repeat. "You're frustrated?"

"Obviously! There goes my best buddy in the world. All delightful and cute and does not realize that I want the little office jokes to be more than just jokes. And then-!"

Irwin steps forward and grasps your shoulders to roughly shake you in fond outrage. He might be zoning back into his drama territory.

"- I find out that they want that too! And they never told me!" he scolds you.

You put your hands over Irwin's arms to stop him from making you too dizzy. He stands still a moment.

"Well, they didn't want to lose what they have," you retort. "You're too important to push away over my stupid emotions."

"Buddy," Irwin pinches the bridge of his nose, clearly attempting to calm his very justified displeasure. "You honestly think, even if I didn't reciprocate, that I'd just - what, leave you in the dust if you caught feels? Don't you trust me at all?"

You bark a laugh, giving him a rough shake back for good measure. "Irwin. My favorite goddamn hypocrite. You did the exact same thing."

"Not the point!" Irwin smiles, finally, letting the ruse fall. You take a second to admire his dimples and smile lines next to his eyes. "Okay, okay, fine. You got me. We're both idiots."

You sit down on the park bench again, looking out over the lake in silence for a while. Eventually, uncharacteristically hesitantly, Irwin's hand creeps over to wrap around yours and intertwining your fingers. You instinctively lean on his shoulder, and everything in his body suddenly seems to relax. You sit like that for a bit, just enjoying the closeness. It's as easy and natural as it's always been.

"So, what now?" you ask, breaking the silence.

"Well, not much, I think," Iriwin replies nonchalantly, brushing his thumb over your hand. He moves slightly and you look up to find him eyeing you playfully. "But maybe you can tell me when I get to kiss you for real?"

I refuse to believe that no one in the reader's workplace calls them lrwin work spouse, I feel that the reader behaves with him at work like a partner who is worried about their partner 24/7, so they are always close by to make sure everything is correct because they know how messy their partner is, and Irwin behaves with them more affectionately than to the rest (because the reader is also a friend and not just a work partner, and that the reader does not mind and like how Irwin shows his affection physically), I want to know his reaction if the reader encourages how the rest see them as a couple and participate in joking with them by calling Irwin their work husband? (Let's say he was not in a relationship, and was interested in the reader romantically) I love him so much♥️ so if he died I died with him

Yeah, everyone knows R and Irwin are two peas in a pod in the workplace, practically inseparable. There's a reason Barney asks the two of them to go to the conference together, he knows they'll do well teaming up.

And Irwin loves a bit, and specifically loves doing a bit with people he loves, so would be right on it with them. Like "Work husband? Daahrling I'm swooning~" He'd lean into it because 1. funny and 2. he would genuinely enjoy having R's attention like that, even if he knows they're just joking around.

If it goes too far, and he's got genuine romantic feels, though, it might start tugging at his heart strings a lil too much. He wouldn't want to, but he would have to put on his big boy pants and ask them to cool the teasing off, before he launches himself into space.

I guess it depends on what you think qualifies one to be a 'mate' 🤔

Driders in this world find 'mates' for the sake of reproduction, not really anything else. You do the deed, and immediately go your separate ways. Maybe fight for custody, if you can't agree who should take care of the offspring afterwards. They sure as hell will not cooperate with the 'mate' for it. In true spider fashion, mates may even try to kill each other if it gets really bad 🤷

But I guess if you define care-taking and companionship the role of a mate as well as reproduction, there is definitely some overlap. But to the driders, a sentry is there as a companion regardless if 'mate stuff' has taken place or not. So in that way, Dren and Morgan would probably see them as separate things. Morgan is e.g. not interested in a 'mate' (no use for offspring to them), but is very interested in a sentry (wants companionship and increased chance of survival). Dren is probably more inclined to search for a sentry after he's reproduced/'mated', but he would want a sentry regardless. It's quiet down there in the dark.

But yeah, team up with a custodian and you're practically married to them. Part of the relation probably ticks the boxes of what 'traditionally' makes a mate (companionship, taking care of offspring together, mutual protection etc.), so I can understand the question. You could say that 'sentry' is just another word for a 'mate' who's permanent. But their role is a lot more diverse, and they can be influenced an connected to in a way a 'reproductive' mate can't.

I saw a very blunt Instagram comment today that told a writer, "AI is going to steal your job soon. You may want to choose something else." It was so nonchalant and casual, like what was just said wasn't heartbreaking to hear.

Can we writers just make a pact just to... not quit? Can we not give in so easily? Can we actually fight to keep our professions and continue to share our own original work? I will never expect writing to be my main source of income, but that does not mean I'm so willing to give it up for the sake of some robot.
