WHAT DID AEMOND THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN? Like fucking oopsiedoodle?! Babes you chased a fourteen year old through a storm on a scared dragon a tenth of the size of your barely tamed ginormous beast. And you know that kid was the loved son of a woman with armies and a dozen dragons at her command who you probably could have avoided a war with if you hadn’t KILLED her child. Also he literally said years ago that losing an eye and gaining Vhagar was a fair trade. Call it quits bro.

If Alicent had only spent as much time raising her children as she did being a belligerent mess, she might have actually raised children worthy of the throne. All of her children are cunts with the exception of Helaena, and very much unfit to rule. (Before ppl start to say anything, the difference shows in things like Jace trying to learn High Valyrian for the sake of his heritage and Aegon...raping servant girls.) And that’s why show Alicent falls so flat, instead of letting her be ambitious and grasping in her own right, she’s made into the walking equivalent of a pity party who is pushed into ambition through a series of twisting misfortunes and coincidences. Literally the only thing compelling about show Alicent is her relationship with Rhaenrya, because show Alicent was literally conceived to be Rhaenyra’s one-time friend. Which again, takes away any stability from her motivations and character.

rhaenrya is not in the wrong. yes, personal flaws and failings aside, she literally only ever did (or tried) to do her duty. and if not for the ambitions of others, she would have fulfilled her duty.

I just can’t reconcile Martin’s pro-unification and diversity stance (both in F&B and in the real world) with his Stark/North bias. Do you think he’s aware of these contradictions?
Martin is on record with admitting how difficult it's been to carry a storyline created in the 90's into the 2010's (and now the 2020's). He still hasn't released his last two books, after all, and it's been 11 years since he published the 5th one in the main series. He's also on record stating that his books have historical influences (like the War of the Roses, most notably), but also that they are "not an allegory to our days". I've talked before about how he's contradicted himself in interviews and with his own politics at times.
As for the North, I think what Martin was going for was a classic underdog-subverts-the-game story. The Starks are the good guys who face a lot of horrible things and have to overcome separation and war to finally come home and reclaim their family's seat. He was going to name ADOS "A Time for Wolves" at first, signaling to me that he was always Pro-Stark Restoration. I've made my peace with the fact that we'll get one, but I'm also adamant that George hasn't done the legwork to prove that a Stark Restoration is morally and politically good for the serfs of the North and morally good compared to the other political situations in Westeros & Essos.
I do think he's aware of this contradiction, and I think he's tried to make it very clear that the Northerners aren't inherently good, in how he's portrayed the Boltons, how he's had smallfolk in the Riverlands bemoan and decry Stark soldiers and loyalists as much as they decry Lannister and Baratheon soldiers and loyalists, how he's shown that the Northern Peace is false, how he's shown how corrupt the Night's Watch is, how he's shown Jon trying to protect the Wildlings and reintegrate them.
But I don't think he's done nearly as good of a job at that as he has in deconstructing feudalism in general through Arya, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, and Brienne's chapters, deconstructing patriarchy through Dany, Arya, Arianne, Asha, Cersei, and Brienne's chapters, and deconstructing slavery through Dany's chapters (primarily) and Arya and Tyrion's (to a lesser but still rigorous extent). Like, he has such great material overall when it comes to showcasing oppression in a feudalist era, yet there's a clear paucity of material when it comes to Northern-specific oppression.
Which, like, okay, if he wanted to go for the pro-Stark ending, he shouldn't have then tried to problematize the Starks by writing about their murky history or the murky acts the Northmen engage in during the current timeline. I guess he was trying to add texture but he was halfhearted about it in a way he wasn't with his other political deconstructions.
I think he realized that writing a story about corruption and oppression and then trying to have your heroes win contradict each other, essentially. So we'll get the Stark Restoration and we'll definitely get far more of an indication on what the new rulers will do to make safeguards for the smallfolk and women in the North, and what will happen to the Wildlings and Children of the Forest, than we ever got on the show, but I don't think it'll be as interesting or poignant as his depiction of feudalist oppression in the Riverlands and Westerlands or slavery in Essos.

To those complaining that the word ‘dracarys’ is being used to much in the show, I’d like to point out that the word literally means ‘dragon-fire’ in Valyrian. It is the word they use to tell their dragons to breathe fire lol. We’re going to have a BUNCH of dragons in this show – so, you’re going to hear it multiple times in the future.

Hilarious how everyone is piling in for the ride with HOTD. Like yeah, no one give a shit about the rest of westeros or the seven kingdoms or even ice zombies or whatnot. we‘re not here for that, we’re not watching it for the ties it has to GOT. we’re here to watch the Targaryens mansplain, manipulate manwhore, manslaughter, and girbossify their way through one of the messiest parts of their history. And we’re treating it like a trashy telenova. love it for us.
