((Please note that in the interest of saving time I am only going through my bookmarks, and that I am very sporadic with bookmarking even when I love a work, so there is a really good chance that I will, at some point, add extensively to this!))

First of all, because I am currently staying with @thefoxindocs​ and she will quite literally murder me in my sleep if I don’t, I am being forced to mention the following of my own works:

@northern-sparrow​ has incredible work. Seriously, she is in my top 2 in-no-particular-order favourite authors. I’ll rec in the order I think you should read them:

ForgottenA Room Of One’s Own (aka AROOO) (explicit, PWP)FlightInto The Fire This one is currently a WIP so maybe you might want to wait for her to finish up before starting it. Yes, it starts off very dark and angsty, but I have faith that it will finish in a good place. 

@ceeainthereforthat​ is my other top 2, and her work is just as amazing. I’ll rec you with the first one I started first, but the rest you can read in whatever order you please.

That is not to say that any of the other authors on my list aren’t incredibly talented, because they are, I am extremely fussy with what works I bookmark/rec to people. Just that these two are my favourite at the moment and I re-read their works often despite having a lot of other stuff to do xD 

Since it has already taken me a long time just to get this far, I’m going to tag what authors I have on my Tumblr and link the rest, as well as linking their works for you. If you want clarification on any of them just ask! I’ll put a note if it’s an Explicit PWP in case that’s not something you’re interested in ^^

riseofthefallenone is well known and quite popular in the fandom AFAIK, but here’s a few of her works that I particularly liked:

I’d like to strongly recommend checking out the Destiel works by @surly-cat, @kaeostennyo, and @majesticduxk - three authors I love and whose works I would have a really hard time selecting favourites for! Another is lilypond whose Tumblr is @heyacas :D You also need to read the works by @thefoxindocs and @cuddle-me-carl - they will tell you they can’t write, but they lie, THEY LIE. 

I know for a fact I will forget some of my favourites simply because there are way too many! So this isn’t a comprehensive list of all my favourite fics/authors xD

Cas kisses Dean for the first time, impulsive and abrupt, underneath the light at a gas station in the small hours of the morning.

There was a bar two towns over and last call was an hour ago. Dean had nursed one beer and declared himself the designated driver. He’d plied Sam with alcohol until his brother asked the bartender to dance with him. They have a date next week.

Dean had stayed, steady and smiling, next to Cas for most of the night. 

Cas managed a couple of shots, and two beers. The burn in his gut has dissipated, leaving him warm and sated. Hazy and content in the backseat. If given half a chance, he could fall asleep on the drive back.

But Sam is giggling in the front seat about something Dean said years ago and suddenly it’s hilarious. Cas is laughing, too. Dean is trying hard not to join in. 

“Oh my God, Sam. That joke wasn’t funny when I told it. Sure as hell isn’t funny now. They don’t get better with age, okay?” As much as he’s protesting, Cas can tell he’s having a hard time fighting back his smile. Sam counters, reasonable even drunk, that Cas is laughing so it must be funny. Dean shakes his head, fondly. Exasperated. “Go in and get yourself a coffee.”

Sam climbs out of the car awkwardly. He stumbles towards the gas station. Cas falls silent again.

Dean chuckles as he turns the key in the ignition to quiet the engine. “Never could hold his liquor.” He glances in the rearview and frowns. “Cas, you okay? You were awful quiet tonight.”

“I’m tired.” 

Tired of watching Dean hum in the kitchen without Cas’s arm around his waist. Tired of going to sleep in his own room, silent and empty, when he knows Dean is tossing and turning in the bed down the hall.

He’s tired of wondering. Of dreaming in the dark by himself.

Dean’s eyes flick away from Cas and he smirks. “Yeah, I know.  We’ll go home right after-”

We’ll go home.

It hits Cas like the sun finally coming over the horizon. The promise of it, the light at the end of the tunnel, has been there for years. But now it’s bright and bold in his chest in the dark of the back seat, and he’s climbing out and yanking open the passenger door before he can think twice. Before Dean is even finished talking. 

Dean didn’t move from the bar all night. He sat with Cas, and talked with Cas, and watched Sam have fun and now he’s taking them back home. 

They’re going home. Together.

There’s a brief, terrifying moment when Dean doesn’t react. When he doesn’t move a muscle, and sits stock still as Cas cups his face -almost like he did in Hell when Dean wouldn’t follow, but softer- and leans in. Brushes their lips together, barely there before it’s over. Cas has been human for a few months now, but he’s never been paralyzed in fear and doubt like he is now. 

But at least now he will know. Cas will have an answer to a question that been plaguing him since that night in the brothel. 

And then, all of a sudden, it’s like dynamite finding it’s spark. Everything in Dean seems to light up, come alive, and he’s moving from behind the wheel with a sureness that’s.. surprising. Pressing Cas into the leather, a knee on either side of his hips. The contact sparks something electric in the base of his spine, and Cas grips Dean’s thigh. Slips a hand under his jacket without a second thought.

Dean’s hand is lightly tangled in Cas’s hair. He’s kissing back fierce and confident. Open-mouthed and wet. Like he’s been waiting to do this forever. 

And as Dean breaks the kiss to catch his breath, he leans his forehead against Cas’s. The harsh light paints him as older than his years. Cas can’t help reaching up to touch the lines around his eyes. The corner of his mouth. 

Dean leans into his touch. Kisses Cas’s palm and sighs. 

“Finally.”

Three times Dean tries to tell Sam.

“So, uh, what do you think of me and Cas?” he asks as he stands at the counter and stares into his cup of coffee.

“I think you guys are great. So there’s a case like half an hour from here, want to go check it out?”

Dean turns and finds Sam typing away on his laptop as if he didn’t even hear what Dean asked. “Yeah. What’s the case?”

They’re eating dinner in the bunker, Sam and Charlie on one side of the table and Dean and Cas on the other. Dean has a six pack in his system and has switched to whiskey when he absentmindedly leans back and tosses his arm around the back of Cas’ chair.

Cas looks at him fondly, so Dean rubs his shoulder and pulls him closer. The smile Charlie gives them reminds Dean that this is not how he normally behaves.

So he waits until Sam is paying attention, and then he leans over and sloppily kisses Cas’ temple.

“Dean, can I have another burger?” is all Sam says.

Cary Brothers’ “Blue Eyes” is playing on the radio and Sam and Dean haven’t talked in the past 20 miles.

“Cas and I are fucking.”

“Do you think we made the right decision back there? Letting that kid live?”

“Sam. Cas and I are–”

“Why are you acting like I don’t know this information?”

“What?”

“What?”

“Cas and I–we’re, you know, like…together I guess.”

“Yeah. Again, why are you acting like I don’t know this information?”

“Because–because–you haven’t–because–I just–”

Dean gives up, and they sit in silence again.

“You don’t have to come out to me, either. I knew that years before you figured it out.”

“How the fuck are you even–”

“And I know you’re the one who keeps leaving empty ice cream cartons in the freezer after you finish them. And I know you send Claire money every month. And I know you secretly wake up really early to watch the–”

“OK, OK. Fine! I get it. Never telling you anything ever again,” Dean mumbles.

Silence.

“I’m happy for you, Dean.”
