No but let's face it, despite the good intentions of everybody involved in making the barbie movie wich i do not doubt a single moment, an Hollywood blockbuster produced by Mattel, a quasi monopolistic company who is second on the toy market only because Lego exists, COULD NOT and WOULD NOT ever be feminist in any meaningful way.

Sure the movie talks a lot about what it means to be a woman, and to be a man, but those discussions on gender are never challenging any statu quo, except saying patriarchy it bads, not only does it not adress the hegemony of heterosexuality and of the familial structure, but it also fails completely to avknowledge class dynamics.

The barbie movie is about girlbosses girlbossing and even tho it aims to universalizes what it means to be a woman, it fails to comprehend that no one is just, only a woman and nothing else. it fails to speak about what it means to have your womanhood questionned and challenged because you are attracted to other women, it fails to comprehend how this Universal sorrority doesn't mean anything when it's this very womanhood that is weaponised within racist institutions to Hurt both men and women, and it fails to understand that the emancipation of women is not a personnal life choice, but a political question, that demand organization, and not positive role models and girlboss representation.

And any movie, article, Book, or any work whatsoever that don't understand those things cannot claim anything but an aesthetic. It cannot be feminist, it cannot be subversive, if it doesn't challenge capitalism and the institutions of racism and misoginy that comes with it

I don’t know, the thing that really bothers me about Greta Gerwig’s films is that there is just this gaping hole where gay women should be. Like, when you’re making these movies about the trap of heterosexual marriage, breaking free of that, and the only concrete answer is to be a single woman over and over and over again, it feels like an intentional absence. You can watch the movie with a queer lens, but it is egregious that you may only consider homosexuality in her movies in this way. It ought to be in them. There is no reason for it not to be there. Women don’t fuck women in Greta Gerwig’s feminist liberations. Often, they don’t have sex at all.

It is so funny to me that in the nineties they just kept writing ace Mc shane as heterosexual altough she is like the definite image of a lesbian. Even in the TV series and even as subtext, she is shown to have several lesbian love interests (that somehow Always have the matter of physical and/or psychological transformation, wether it's mags, a littéral werewolf, karra and the call of the hunt, or Susan Q and her psychological trauma.
