Smeardyakov is the perfect illustration of Dostoyevsky’s philosophical concerns. The burden he bears over being a child born of rape reflects the authors obsession with the idea of inherited sin. His decision to commit murder in the midst of exceptionally compelling circumstances (abused his whole life, forced to serve his mothers rapist, excluded and berated by the whole town, unable to assimilate into Russian culture due to his homosexuality), his murdering of the cat as a child juxtaposed with the dehumanizing treatment he receives at the hands of his adoptive parents. All of this directs back to the ideas that preoccupied Dostoyevsky: the question of whether you are born evil/doomed, the question of personal responsibility for one’s life and one’s sins.
And to think he was a last minute addition who Dostoyevsky himself had little pity for. The reviled son reflects back just what he sees inside the fathers mind.

This 27 of April is the second anniversary of the day I finished this book for the first time. To do something special, I reread it over the last 20 days and as I did it, I compiled little things that are easy to forget in these 1000 pages filled with food for thought. Let's go!
1. Mitya fought in a duel, though it's most likely that nobody died in it.
2. Ivan's journalist pseudonym is "Eyewitness".
3. Alyosha, in his own words, came back to Skotoprigonyevsk to visit his mother's grave.

Tomorrow I'll finish rereading The Brothers Karamazov and I'm still amazed by how important this book has become to me. Even though I know it in such a detailed manner, I still find myself endeared or shaken by every gesture of these characters, I still have questions, I still experience lasting feelings of bliss or dread after I finish the reading session. Of course, not every read is the same. This time around, I've paid more attention to Fyodor Pavlovich's words, and I even played detective a bit with the facts of the case. I liked Zosima's chronicle more than the last time, and greatly enjoyed the metanarrative aspects.
It's strange. In the beginning, I thought: "no, it can't possibly be as good as I remember. This writing style seems rougher than I remember. Some of these tangents are a little boring - and I can tolerate it because reading things that are not entertaining is my calling." But as I continued I remembered why I love it.

Weird thing enjoyer found another weird thing to enjoy
Various Frankenstein doodlings. Abt half were from reference half from imagination.
Most of these are related to the Royal Ballet version which I watched a video of the other day. So good and such a wild combination. The elegant medium and the grotesque subject matter.
I also had to draw that amazing puppet version that was made for the Hamburg state opera. lil cutie he is
