with the way this show progressed, we'd have seen Ed's bare ass as the first scene of s3

They should invent classical music with titles that are easy to remember. Why does it have to be like concerto number 27 in E minor I want to know if it's the one that blasts my dick off or not

Ed and Stede would absolutely be that couple with a billion little codes for when they need out of a situation.
At a social situation and they're getting tired? Stede's probably been watching for it because Ed's been getting quiet and clingy, but then Ed'll pop his head up from where he's been hiding his face in Stede's neck and mumble something tangentially related to what they were talking about, "yeah, yeah, beer's really good here, Stede and I had this orange lager a few months ago," and Stede's been looking for oranges because that's their code word, and he's able to make a timely excuse so none of their friends are any the wiser. They get to go home and cuddle and recharge.
They're in public and meet up with an old friend of Ed's, Stede's already on edge because Ed's smile doesn't look quiet right, Ed takes his hand and squeezes it three times and Stede knows it's time to talk about a very important appointment they're going to miss if they don't leave right now immediately.
Stede's on the phone with a distant family member or old business contact looking for his father, Ed's listening in because Stede's voice is getting overly polite and that's never a good sign. Stede slips in a "oh, isn't that down by the coast, there's a lighthouse there" and Ed starts loudly going "hey baaaaabe can you come in here??? That mole is baaaack and I need you to look at it" so Stede can hang up the phone.
Just giving each other the agency to choose when it's time to leave and helping them get out. Ed's felt so forced to do things he doesn't want to do for so long; Stede's used to having no one in his corner. But with their powers combined? They can finally leave situations they don't want to be in.

I must not mock Gen Alpha. Mocking Gen Alpha is the mind killer. Mocking Gen Alpha is the little-death that brings total generational solidarity obliteration. I will engage with Gen Alpha lovingly. I will permit them to be cringe. And when they grow up I will turn my eye to their accomplishments. Where mocking has gone there will be nothing. Only generational solidarity remains

Thank you @chocolatepot for the nuance, I think it's important
The two thoughts that strike me, too: that Justin McElroy tweet "the first amendment protects you from the government not the Justin" and do what you want forever but also I might judge you for it (silently or otherwise)
🔹 Saying that it's okay to write or read about dark and taboo topics but only when they're portrayed in a certain way is still censorship.
🔹 Wanting to ban or forbid media that you believe portrays a negative topic in a positive light, by glorifying, romanticizing, or fetishizing it is still censorship.
🔹 There is no objective metric to decide if a story is portraying a negative topic the 'right' way.
🔹 Just because a piece of fiction doesn't explicitly condemn or portray an evil action in a bad light in the text doesn't mean the author thinks its good or is trying to persuade the audience that it is good.
🔹 Survivors of trauma will not always write fiction about their trauma in a way that seems 'right' or 'normal' to you.
🔹 Banning fiction because it portrays dark, taboo topics in a way you consider gross or disgusting is still censorship.

@chaotic-neutral-knitter, thanks for asking about those two specifically, because today in weird things about brains
Tumblr media
one, I'm a little surprised I remember that, and two, turns out I have DEFINITELY heard that live version, because the intro is ........... yeah, I have a precise location, not going at 75mph or anything, but yeah. it's a good version, another one for the "much better live" pile, and as one of the comments says: "This may be the least hinged I’ve heard John sing"

Source Decay and Family Happiness
I like these torture devices from my old best friend
I sort of recognize this song but haven't really listened much (@emi--rose did you and Jim play this at the memorial?!) so I don't have strong feelings about it. This is a solid line of poetry, though. (also @frommybookbook: postcard mention!)
You can bring out all your weapons/But you can't make me go to war
Another song I don't know, as in, have maybe never heard before? In any case it's a hell of a song (I bet it fucks live) and that line is metal.
New hot take: I like Coroner's Gambit better than All Hail West Texas (altho overall I am not a lofi goats girlie, the Panasonic is bad audio texture)
Send me a Mountain Goats song title and I'll tell you my favorite line

Riches and Wonders, Incandescent Ruins, In Corolla
We show great loyalty/To the hard times we've been through
This is a Big Feelings song, it's on a playlist I made for Ryn, and they had a lot of very smart thoughts about the complexity of it as a love song and very NOT a love song, and I think this might be the first time I've listened to it since they died. And this line captures the "love but it's also trauma bonding" of it all, imho.
Shining on the inside/Maybe
IDK why this is the song on Bleed Out that doesn't hit as much for me? But the chorus is just extremely singable.
And no one was gonna come and get me There wasn't anybody gonna know Even though I leave a trail of burned things in my wake Every single place I go
yeah yeah yeah it's almost a whole stanza but it all needs to be there. we have deffo talked about this as an Ed song, and the overlap of this as the quiet landing place of my grief album, the way it feels like 1x10 - 2x3 Ed, and Corolla, NC being where real human person Blackbeard supposedly died, well, yeah.
also [grief dab] at instantly crying at the very first note.

Woke up afraid of my own shadow, like genuinely afraid
I think this is one of those songs where any individual line is less than the overall feel of the thing, you know?

When people get a little too gung-ho about-
wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?
ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
That’s…wild. What was I talking about?
