My friend Azraen was able to test print this for me before I go on my trip! They had no issues or warping with it so I've made it available on my Ko-fi - https://ko-fi.com/s/422ed9c2e7
It's currently scaled for a 26cm doll but you could scale it and make some minor edits to the base for magnet size. Right now, it's set to use an 8x2mm magnet.
I've also set up a Cults3D account for anyone who prefers that - https://cults3d.com/en/users/EverydayDollyDomes/3d-models
The original Wavelength head is there, as well. I'm hoping to test the 2.0 version of that, soon, but it's apparently...too high res or something? IDK but Chitubox hates it so a more experienced friend of mine is trying to knock the file down without it turning out too crummy >>' I guess it makes sense...compared between my original and the new one...it definitely has a LOT more detail.

When you have to make sure Fern won't snap during printing or when their supports are being removed so they get chonky succulent leaves. If anyone wants to know what type of plant Fern is...let's go with a hybrid...and a special little baby.

Okay, here is the Drizzle head I mentioned. Like I said, it's really big!! Took a while to balance this and they took a nose dive IMMEDIATELY after this photo was taken...so it definitely needs shrinking. Gaping isn't as bad so some slight adjustments to the magnet wells, too.

I think I accidentally left this out of the ask but uh...trial and error is a big part of it.
So much trial and error and going back and fixing stuff and reprinting and see if you gotta fix anything else.
Mostly magnet wells....
Most of the stuff is manageable with, you know, dremeling and such and you can clean it up and still make it something you can sell, but before I make a file available, I want it to be something that will be relatively ready to go without a bunch of prep to just get the magnets in there right or something, you know?
It's one thing if I gotta clean it up before taking it somewhere to sell, it's another for someone to buy the file, print it, and discover they gotta make a bunch of fixes after the fact.
Anyway, while the fixing and reprinting and fixing again, if necessary, can be frustrating at times, it is soooo satisfying when things click together and it all looks so dang seamless and you know you made that.

Hi! I'm thinking of making my own ball jointed dolls, but don't know where to start. What are some beginner tips?
As far as sculpting goes, my main focus so far as been on object heads with only very very recently branching out into a tail (which looks pretty good imo for a first pass lol). I am hoping to eventually model my own body to go with my object heads, though, and have a doll that is 100% my own. Right now I print a lot of Kabbits cause I love them - they're made by AelithArt, who also has shared quite a few tutorials.
Some of Aelith's tutorials are linked below (he uses zbrush, which is a paid subscription. I've heard zbrush mini is free, though) (also hopefully these links will take you to the respective playlists):
youtube
youtube
If you don't like Zbrush or are having trouble getting Zbrush Mini to download or something, Blender is also popular and it's a free to use program. It's definitely got a learning curve but there are tons of tutorials on YouTube. I don't have any I specifically use, unfortunately, as the most I've used it for so far is for smoothing and a friend showed me how to do that over Discord.
Another friend has suggested just studying the joints and such of doll artists you admire and seeing how they built their dolls (one of my favorite parts of the Kabbits is the knees, personally)
I also got this on Etsy - https://www.etsy.com/listing/594358549/online-video-class-how-to-design-a-bjd?ref=hp_active-mission-recs-rv-1-1
Which is another Youtube course about designing a BJD pattern, essentially designing your doll. You can actually find a lot of classes like this through Etsy that may come as PDFs or special Youtube links. Those ones tend to cost money, though. I believe the one I got was about 15-16 US dollars. Not bad, but it's the very beginning of the process and does not get into the actual modeling aspect; it's just the planning stage. That seller DOES have more tutorials available that get into the modeling stage, but they're much more expensive and I believe she focuses on actual sculpting and casting in resin. I still use resin, but I 3D print my stuff.
If you can find a good, active discord community, that's also great, honestly. I'm really glad I joined Aelith's cause it's been a pretty positive experience and there's quite a few knowledgeable people in there who have all been very supportive.
Aaah, I hope this helped some?? I'm not always great at organizing my thoughts for this kind of thing and my own resources are actually kind of limited.

I got Elixa test printed today! As you can tell, there's some issues with the magnets, leaving some notable gaps which I am already working on fixing. Still needs some cleanup; I just kind of gave it a rough sanding to clean up the worst spots from the supports so I could handle it easily for now.
Not sure where that stain came from :/ but I think the overall concept is coming through, though!!
I did also print a Drizzle but it A. Needed quite a bit of clean up and I'm still working on that (plus magnet gluing) and B. I am debating trying it on at all. It came out a lot larger than I thought it would, even after comparing it to a Kabbit head. I hollowed it out before printing, too, but it's still pretty heavy so that's another concern. We'll see.

Working on this as part of a commission, but received permission to eventually make this as an available STL for anyone who'd like a plug tail for their doll! It's the first tail I've done and I think I did a pretty good job! ^^

Making Narinder
Since Narinder has gotten lots of attention, I thought I'd share in a little more detail what specific parts from AelithArt's wide catalog he's made from, cause he's a little mix and match + a custom, remixed head.
Head: The head is a remix of one of Aelith's DIY pieces, made by FrozenOverStudio. She hasn't posted it on Etsy or Cults yet, but the STL file IS available for purchase and you can reach out to her at [email protected] if you'd like to purchase it. It comes with eyes chips. You can also reach out to her on instagram at @ frozenoverstudiosllc
Chest/Paws/Feet/Lower Torso: Wolfy
Thighs/Knees/Shins/Shoulders/Elbows: Original Kabbit
Forearms: You only need the one piece from this, unfortunately, if you want the bony look on his forearms, but it's the Zombie. This piece is a little tricky to use because 1. the bone forearm is only on one side, so you have to mirror it before printing, and 2. it's so freaking narrow! It's really hard to get the knot of your string through the channel. I eventually gave up, made my string a little shorter, and set it in such a way that the knot is actually still chilling near his wrist.
Tail: Additional Head and Ears set, which is also great if you wanna make a yellow cat~
I printed him on an Elegoo Saturn 2 in grey (cause black was being stupid and wouldn't cure)
A lot of the below comes in bulk - I tend to print multiple dolls to bring to conventions but just keep it in mind for yourself; at the very least it'll give you an idea of size.
The magnets in his head are 8x2mm magnets (no link but you can generally find these pretty easily online and in craft stores)
Magnets for tail and the back of his lower torso are 5x2mm (not sure why this was smaller? But my other magnets didn't fit. If I'd noticed BEFORE painting, I could have dremelled it...wasn't willing to do it by that point.)
2mm elastic string
S-hook in neck
S-hook in wrists and ankles - It turned out these were a SMIDGE small for the ankles so I needed to use a set of pliers to widen them a little. So far, they're holding fine.
Altogether, this does seem like quite the investment, but I got a lot of these sets either over a period of time or after I joined Aelith's patreon. For $10 a month, he releases new parts or ful dolls that are available to you. He also does months where you can pick a sculpt so if there's a sculpt you want but it was released before you became a member, you can request it.
I hope that covers about everything? I'm not really aiming for like, a full tutorial, but I at least wanted to share everything that went into putting him together.
I can't wait to get his robes.
A lot less pieces will go into Lambert, they'll be a modded Sheepy head on the base Kabbit. Debating if I want the crown to be just...attached to their head, though. Like built into it. If it's a separate piece, I'm not sure how I'd keep it on their head.

And he's painted! I got a little impatient and strung him anyway >> not sure how well the sueding will hold up but overall he looks great! Magnet for his tail will be here tomorrow and I have a friend I've commissioned for his robes.
I'll have a Lambert to go with him, too, but I'm still waiting on the modded Sheepy head.

....did not expect all those notes, dang. Lol

So here's a bit of the foam clay sueding I talked about that my friend did on a doll. Takes a bit to dry but if you do a thin enough layer, it should prevent the worst of the chipping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a few more progress shots as I go. Bit of red dry brushing for some highlights. Paw pads aren't quite as bright in person.
I also needed to order slightly smaller magnets, it turns out, for his tail -.-
Just gotta seal him, add some varnish and then once the foam clay is dry (probably tomorrow), I can string him!!

CAT CAT CAT!!
...
More productively, first layer done! Gotta flip a few parts over and touch up some others. He's a mix of a few of AelithArt's Kabbits pieces, like the Wolfy Chest, feet and hands, base lower body, the cat tail. The Zombie Kabbit only had one bone forearm so I mirrored it for the other. Looks okay so far. Debated using the skeleton hand vs the paw hands but I really wanted beans.
