I’ve decided that side-blogs just do not work for me. Everything is too interconnected in my head. So this and my other side-blog are going to go dark. I’ll be posting everything over at @listen-to-the-trees from now on. You can find me there.
Sorry.

in relation to this post , i also need jaskier to play with the elven kids. the parents just finally catching a break in near-safety, a moment of calm and a moment of kindness, a moment to breathe for them while the bard plays with the kids.
laughter echoing through the hull of the ship, children squealing as the bard lifts them off the ground and spins them around. jaskier raptly listening as they explain to him how to skip a rope or clap his hands along to the rhythm until someone makes a mistakes.
the children teaching him elven songs and nursery rhymes, which then come in handy to calm a particularly anxious and scared toddler a few days later. the elves trust him, the children love him, and the parents watch him with relief and tears in their eyes as he makes them believe that kindness and hope are not yet lost in this world

Nothing feels more free than the realization that canon, fanon, and headcanon are all 1000% fake and made up and therefore all equally true and equally false. None are better or worse than the other. They just either appeal to you or they don't.

At the end of The Princess Bride, when Inigo tells Westley he doesn't know what to do with himself now that he's not in the revenge business anymore, and Westley tells him he'd be a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts?
The name of Dread Pirate Roberts' ship is The Revenge. Which means Inigo still gets to be in The Revenge business.

I have been watching this movie since I was at least five years old, and I never made the connection until now. (Feel free to tell me you all saw it long ago.)

okay but jaskier using carefully neutral petnames when he’s mad at geralt to communicate his displeasure
“what do you think, my scrubbed potato?” “after you, my lukewarm bowl of beef stew” “ah geralt, you partially shined boot”

I don’t know. Maybe that’s a difference without a difference, but it feels different to me. And I mean no ill will to those making the posts on legends being fanfiction, so I didn’t want to post it on any of those, but I wanted to get the idea out. So thanks.
I just saw another of those posts where someone goes “Oh my god, guys, I just realized that King Arthur is fanfiction! It’s just people telling versions of other people’s versions of stories. There’s no canon!”
My brother in literature, that is what legends and folk tales are. King Arthur, Robin Hood, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, etc…. there’s only stories told down through the generations. You can find “the earliest recorded version of the tale;” you can find “the most historically popular version” or “the one that introduced elements most often used in later retellings (the first appearance of Maid Marian, or the iconic staff fight with Little John) but there is no canon because there are only stories that morphed out of other stories that morphed out of other stories that may once have been based on an event that happened to someone who may not have had a name vaguely similar to the character you know today.
And that’s cool! I love that! And you go out and do your own retelling, and make your own choices of what elements to take or discard! I think that’s great.
But it seems to me that fanfiction particularly is based on the idea that we took something that does have canon, whether we kept that canon, twisted that canon, or spit in that canon’s face, and decided to run with it with our own ideas.

This Ao3 anti discourse actually gets really funny when you realize that they are clearly the ones going out of their way to read fucked up shit in the first place. Like one does not accidentally stumble on an original work from an orphaned account clearly tagged for underage noncon incest slavery. It just does not happen. It's like the Salem witch trials at this point. You may well have seen Temperance at the devil's sabbath but what the fuck were you doing there?

idle Jaskier-related notion:
Joey Batey is really approximately the same size and shape as Henry Cavill, and there are a number of clever techniques in pretty much all Jaskier's costumes to hide this fact and make him look about three or four inches narrower than he actually is. The costumers work really really hard to make him look that twinky, often with cleverly cut shoulder decorations that pretend he's trying to look bigger than he is and have the actual effect of making him look a lot lighter.
On a Doylistic level this makes sense, because it's hard to make Geralt look Huge and Imposing next to your non-combatant harmless sidekick if said sidekick is a jacked six foot burly man.
On a Watsonian level, however, the notion of Jaskier as this big meaty dude aggressively arguing with all his tailors to ensure that he looks as non threatening and foppish and entertaining as possible while also looking as sexy as he can (for a Jaskier definition of sexy, at least) is generating considerable entertainment for me this fine morning.

Saying “this niche, properly tagged, warned, and rated piece of fiction could theoretically hurt someone” is not a good argument. This properly labeled cookie with the allergen information at the bottom that contains gluten could theoretically harm me very badly, but only if I consume it. Tags are like nutrition labels, and warnings are like allergy information. If you know you have an allergy to something, the logic is to stay away from it. It is the same with fiction. I’m not running through stores yelling at people to take all the products with gluten off the shelves just because it could hurt me. Instead I ignore it and go to the gluten free section and find cookies that are right for me. And if running through a grocery store yelling sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. Stop doing the same with fiction.
