Popped in to get bits for tea before stopping by the allotment to pick up the trolley and corn seeds. There was a pack of garlic that was sprouting so now I have garlic planted.
Finally made it back. Pleasantly surprised to find it not as wet as I expected and actually improving. The weeds were not that bad, though I do have bindweed, so I'll need to stay vigilant.
The seeds in the greenhouse are up and haven't perished, and the potatoes are up. No sign of carrots or alliums in the bed (birds? slugs? or just not up? Who can tell?)
So a bit of weeding, and watering in the greenhouse, and a first harvest of gently nibbled radishes.
Everything seems to be about 3-4 weeks ahead, and it's meant to stay quite warm, so I got my carrots, leeks, and spring onions sown. I heard about using loo roll to make DIY seed tape, so I thought why not try it for sowing direct? I just tucked a strip into the drill and sowed along. It was easy to see the seed spacing and hopefully it will keep birds from eating them too.
Another lovely allotmenteer left me some welsh onions which I popped in too. Cosmos and nasturtiums have been sown in the greenhouse, and I put together the bed Dan cut for me last time which will be the nasturtium trap bed. We could do two more of these for salads or to use as test beds.
Somehow it's even wetter this morning. I know it rained overnight but I didn't think it was that much.
I managed to move enough of the "to compost" pile out of the way to pull the plastic to the side, but I'll need help to get it moved. I'll bring a pallet from home to add to the side and will keep an eye out for more to build a two chamber bin around the pile.
Other than that just shuffled some pavers around.
Met the guy who has the gorgeously kept plot the other end and he showed me around what he's done and gave a few little pointers. I'm so happy everyone has been friendly, and everyone so far is doing organic.
I divided my dayliliy and brought it over for the end of the potato bed. It's nice to see something leafy.
The last bed is uncovered and turned over. It's not good, but not as bad as the other one. The couch grass is older so the roots are thicker and hopefully will be easier to pull out. But not today. I covered it back up until next time. He dug in a bit more trench.
I put up a pallet and braced it for the raspberries to climb, took some plastic off the compost area, and carted some rubbish home to take to the tip.
Next time: move the compost heap, get rid of the last of the plastic, and weed out the last bed
Six hours down the allotment today, mostly digging the rest of the bean bed in great detail. But at last it has been cleared. Also the (I suspect) plum tree has had all crossed branches and eye-level poking hazards removed, and two more ditches were installed by my digger-in-chief.
Evil Spaghetti.
Six beds down, one (I suspect evil) bed to go!
I am fucking knackered! Time for a shower and a wine.
