Also, there are only 34 fics on AO3 tagged "Post-Meat" and that is strangely disappointing. Six of them are mine, including one where Jack finds out Ianto used superpowers to burn down the warehouse. This episode is a goldmine - BAMF Ianto, Janto drama, and endless ways of actually clueing Gwen in to the consequences of her actions. Now that I think of it, my unfinished quarantine fic is post-Meat too, because she can never learn her lesson too many times!

Better written than actual TV shows and movies, definitely! Especially when it comes to things like sequels and missing moments - it's amazing how good some fanfic authors are at nailing things like dialogue and character so that it absolutely feels like it could have been another episode or movie. And quite often - much better!!

That said, I'm noticing more and more that fanfic has its own stylistic idiosyncrasies that are unique to fanfiction. Certain types of sentence structures, phrases, punctuation and even overall style, much of which I don't think would find its way into a modern published novel. And that's okay. It's why I love reading fanfic, because it is its own beautiful genre now. I started reading/writing fanfic eighteen years ago and it has come so far, it's amazing!

i know it's a little bit toxic but nothing is more satisfying to me than when a fictional character who is generally very dignified, polite, and calm even under pressure is finally persuaded to unleash their anger and it fucking explodes out of them with enough molten volcanic rage to level entire cities

Well, I went back to an old, unfinished story but am struggling. Maybe it wasn't meant to be. It's a quarantine type story, but I'm not sure how to end it after 10k I always liked to make my endings mean something, not just ramble off into the sunset. Ianto and Gwen are stuck in seclusion together and have a little talk but then what? Owen cures them and. . . ? ? ? Any ideas?

I'd also love to finish this non-Torchwood AU I started years ago. It's well over 15k, kind of fun, already at several chapters and probably just needs a few more. I think I remember where it was going but apparently I didn't write that part, and I could swear I did! So that's been sitting open on my desktop for weeks too. I need a good kick in the pants. I think part of the problem is needing an immediate payoff...I've been out of writing so long I don't really feel like playing the long game right now, I just want to write something I can also finish. Only it's all stuck. Boo.

In the meantime, back to reading through my bookmarks. . .

EDIT 2: Turns out that looking at my file history, I started the quarantine story while sick with the same kind of rash, just not alien. Go figure. I thought it was sounding awfully familiar! 🤣

Gwen:

-her stupid kissing game in Countrycide

-her initial comments to joining the team about not having partners, then saying it again in Meat

-her constant pushing and doubting of Jack, making him feel even worse when he has to do something hard to save the word and she disagrees, like with Jasmine.

-her selfishness after Tosh hears her thoughts with the pendant

-taking advantage of Jack's feelings for her to get what she wants, like with Rhys

-thinking she knows best, like in Adrift

-never getting any consequences (that we see - thank you fanfic!) for talking back, breaking the rules, and disobeying orders

Jack:

-telling stories about other lovers not because he misses them and wants to share fond memories, but because he likes to leer about it and keep up his reputation (as well as keep others at a distance, I suspect)

-telling Gwen he came back for her and then telling the team the same thing while looking at Ianto because Gwen was engaged

-some of the things he says to Ianto in the novels, like Twilight Streets

Owen:

-shooting Jack in End of Days not knowing Jack would come back.

Ianto:

-I was thinking there's really not much to put on Ianto's list here. He can be very grey but he also acts with integrity. He doesn't say or do things just to shock or be cruel, not even in ignorance because he's more self aware. The only thing I can think of is from Broken, when he pushes Jack through the Rift. But then he saves him. And then he kisses him. So he's really all over the place there and sometimes I'm just not as sure about that particular development of his character.

Reasons why I hate each of the main 5 Torchwood members (these are the entire list of reasons unless I specifically say otherwise):

Gwen

- cheating on Rhys then retconning him to forgive her for it

- the speech at the end of the episode Meat

Jack

- making Ianto feel insecure about where he stands in their relationship (yeah ik why but he should have told Ianto that)

- trying to force Ianto at gunpoint to execute what was left of Lisa

- not bothering to check on Ianto after the cannibals

- the way he dealt with Mary then didn't comfort Tosh

Tosh:

- the comment in the episode Meat about feeding the world, disregarding the amount of pain that the creature was in

Owen:

- his sadistic enjoyment of trying to make Gwen and Rhys' relationship fall apart

- the stuff he said to Ianto in the episode Captain Jack Harkness

- the way he completely disregards Tosh and her feelings for him, they were obvious and Owen is smart enough to not be blind

- kicking Ianto when he'd already won the fight in the episode Captain Jack Harkness

- his general treatment of Ianto and Tosh

Ianto:

- literally nothing, everything he did that was morally grey/wrong was at least mostly justified

Can you tell my ranking of characters? I'm not sure if my no.1 is obvious at all, most definitely not clear, such a mystery.

This is a quote from Twilight Streets. Jack is so rude to Ianto, I hate it. But Ianto also stands up to Jack and doesn't really bat an eye at Jack's words. He's worried about Jack and takes it to the team when Jack blows him off. There is a funny bit about Ianto poisoning them with his coffee if they don't help him figure out what's going on with Jack. And then he stands up to Jack again.

Comparing early Ianto characterizations in the books/BBC audios to later Big Finish characterizations is kind of weird and interesting and a little disjointed. There is sort of a slow flip from Jack being a playboy who still sleeps around to him being completely in love with Ianto. I'm thinking it was a response to fans who loved Ianto and hated seeing him treated poorly. I wonder how much of it had to do with Jack.

And then there's fanfic Ianto, which takes it all to another level. 😂

I may reread Twilight Streets now, though. I'm curious about early Janto. Then maybe I'll read some of those transcriptions of Absent Friends floating around, since the bits I've seen sure write them differently. Or I'll finally listen to Outbreak, since I never worked up the courage. I wonder what the actors think of the evolution of Janto. I'm definitely glad they've evolved and love how much great material there is for them. ❤️

What if Jack had gone downstairs to kill Lisa in Cyberman instead of Ianto? What if the Cyberman had taken him and transplanted Lisa's brain into Jack’s body? It would have been an immortal Cyberman, right? Or would his regenerative powers have rejected the new brain and brown him a new compatible one? And would Jack’s brain have survived and regenerated a new body? How horrible is either one of those scenarios?

Not that the brain transplant really makes sense anyway, but the episode is so messed up it's sort of fun to think of how it could have been even worse...

Everything changes.

The mere moments between these two gifs absolutely ruins me.

I know that word of God has said that Jack and Ianto didn't sleep together while Lisa was alive. I know it and I respect it. Because the alternative is, frankly, awful. It's an awful way to begin a relationship, and an awful thing to do to yourself and to someone else. So I understand why they chose to not go down that route.

This moment, however, tells me something different.

Because the first gif is Ianto feeling relief. He got the job because he impressed Jack. His life is shit and the next however long will be hard but this is the beginning of the end. Everything will be okay as long as he can get through these next few months.

The second gif is Ianto realizing that the reason he got the job is because Jack wants him. This is Jack setting a precedent. You come to work for me because I like how you look and I like how you felt on me. Everything will be okay, he still knows. But he'll have to do something awful to make that happen.

So I respect the writers intention, I live in that little sliver of grey area. The area where maybe Jack was surprised to be kissed in the SUV not for the first time, but for the first time of Ianto's own choice. Because it's so deliciously devastating.

It's a hot mess of a dumpster fire. Honestly, it's a great followup to the Doctor Who episodes where TW One fell. We see actual consequences, what happened after. It brings out the horror of what happened at Canary Wharf more than Doctor Who. And it delivers a bombshell about the mild mannered secretary who looked good in a suit. However, the execution of what was a tragic TW story ruined it and took it from plausible to pure camp. The costume, the bbq sauce and pteranodon fight, the brain transplant - nope. Too much. Give us the tragic romance, give us the blood and gore and fear, but don't sexualize it, don't bring in dinosaurs just because you can, and try to keep the human parts a bit more real. Because that last scene where Ianto is just picking up trash in a new suit? No fucking way. Thank god for all the fanfic that writes it better!

ok when you all said "Cyberwoman" was bad i wasn't quite expecting ianto's half cyberman girlfriend (who's basically in a cyber bikini) that he keeps in the basement and killed a man, to get pecked *NEARLY to death after she was covered in barbecue sauce by Torchwood's pet pterodactyl. AND THEN it turns out she survived by transplanting her brain into the poor pizza lady who delivers them pizza (WHO THE FUCK ORDERED PIZZA?!?! [of course it was ianto and his coleslaw i forgot. he's an idiot]) then the Torchwood team all take turns at shooting her while ianto's sobbing. ok. he doesn't even get fired.
