I have my answer I will go to my grave believing is correct, but I'm curious what conclusions other folks drew from the show. Reblog for a larger sample size.

Tumblr media
I just thought everyone should know that apparently Tumblr itself finds Threshold to be genre-defying.
what's the threshold theory
There was a post about how Tom is the only crew member who isn't really affected by the Borg, and there's a theory that he has so much luck because he saw the past and the future when he crossed the transwarp threshold. He saw the past and the future, all of time and space. There's some subconscious part of him that remembers that experience. In fact, Tom refused to play a part in Chakotay indulging Annorax's temporal incursions, probably because a part of him knew nothing good could come of it.
If we extend that same theory to Janeway, some of her wild luck with time travel and other crack plans starts to make sense. She doesn't verbally hate time travel until after the events of Threshold, since it happens in Time and Again without complaint. Janeway has an uncanny knack for time travel, as evidenced every time she deals with it. She hates time travel, but it might be because part of her knows exactly how to manipulate the timeline. She manages to avoid the "inevitable" temporal explosion in Future's End, saving both Voyager and Braxton. She resets the entire timeline in Year of Hell, and no one else followed her reasoning. She pulled it off flawlessly. In Relativity, she senses the incidents are all related, despite it being just one reading that connects them. By the time she's involved, she has a temporal incursion factor of .0036 and a time travel protocol named after her, even if that may just be Braxton's personal grudge. Then there's Endgame, where she intentionally changes the timeline. Up until this point, she has been dragged into time travel, but for the first time, she jumps in on purpose. How does Admiral Janeway know how to get them home sooner in a way that completely avoids the Temporal Integrity Commission? It's because she has seen all of time, and part of her knows exactly what needs to happen so she can get Voyager home and do it in a way that becomes baked into the prime timeline. Maybe she doesn't consciously remember what happened during her transformation, but the experience lives in her mind somewhere, guiding her decisions.

The thing about "Worst Case Scenario" is that Seska rewriting a program to torture and ultimately murder Tuvok for his "betrayal" of the Maquis suggests that she was loyal to the Maquis, and not only because of her feelings for Chakotay. She would've had to booby trap the program before "State of Flux," because she's under intense scrutiny then and there's not really enough time anyway. Which suggests to me that she was fueled by real rage: if Tuvok had reopened the program, and been killed by it, how could she have possibly gotten away with it? She wasn't planning to leave at that point, and (!) she specifically depicts herself as Bajoran, not, in some big gotcha moment, as Cardassian:
When Seska returns in this episode [...] the holographic Seska also slightly differs, in appearance, from how the actual Seska ever looked. "We […] see Seska in an incarnation we had never really seen her in before," Martha Hackett commented. "They changed everything – her hair and costume – because it's her creation in the hologram." (Star Trek Monthly issue 34, p. 40)
(Emphasis mine)
This, coupled with her big speech in "State of Flux," makes me wonder whether she would've ever revealed herself as Cardassian, if she hadn't been caught. She seems still to believe in the superiority of Cardassia ("If this had been a Cardassian ship, we would be home now!"), yet follows up with,
"I did it for you. I did it for this crew. We are alone here, at the mercy of any number of hostile aliens, because of the incomprehensible decision of a Federation captain. A Federation captain who destroyed our only chance to get home. Federation rules. Federation nobility. Federation compassion? Do you understand? [...] We must begin to forge alliances. To survive, we must have powerful friends."
We are alone. We must have powerful friends. I don't know how this has never occurred to me, but textually speaking, with the notable exception of Incomprehensible Federation Captain Janeway, Seska seems deeply invested in the community she is ultimately forced to leave. It's, actually, a kind of reverse Ro Laren situation. What a twist.

6, 26, 31 for the trek asks please!
6. Character you feel a show could have done without?
hahaha. Just. Jack Crusher. It has to be Jack Crusher. It can only be Jack Crusher.
26. Which alien hybrid offspring are you most interested in seeing?
I guess we mean other than the lizard babies? I think Vulcan/Trill would be cool. Wise. Long-lived. Lots of swagger.
31. A crossover with another show/movie/book/ect, that you’d want to see?
Hmmm. I'm not much for crossovers with other universes so I'll say, somehow, the TNG cast with the VOY cast. I think we could all stand to see Janeway and Riker in more Situations. As long as Matalas doesn't helm it.
Thank you, @divinemissem13! 🤍

4 and 24 for the Trek asks
4. Favorite alien species?
Vulcans, always. Not just for their Jewishness - though also that - but the ✨vibes✨, man. I love their forever-internal struggle, the peace and rationalism they are never not reaching for, their Death Valley planet, the meaningfulness of their friendship when offered, just, woof, all of it. The outfits. The rituals. And also I can relate hard to wanting to keep all your personal emotional shit on lockdown, so there's that.
24. Which character do you relate to the most?
Personally: Janeway. This has been true since the show aired. But professionally, I actually try to relate more to Picard, because Janeway as a boss in a non-military context would, uh, not go so great as I think we'd all like to believe.
Thanks so much for the asks, @doctorbeverlycrusher! 😊

1. Top 3 favorite female characters?
2. Top 3 favorite male characters?
3. Top 3 least favorite characters?
Actually I had to think way harder about this than I expected. And I decided not to cop out of the last question with some one-off guest stars 😅 Top 3 favorite female characters? Kathryn Janeway, Beverly Crusher, and Uhura (TOS). Easy peasy.
Top 3 favorite male characters
-Riker is the GOAT.
-This is a hot take but I stand by it: TNG-era Picard. I love him. I looked up to him as a model of leadership when the show was on. Picard-era Picard isn't real and can't hurt me.
-& Tom Paris, obv, for the Shipping, but honestly Garak too. I can't leave him off.
Top 3 least favorite characters?
Okay so like there are many characters I dislike from Treks that I don't really participate in or even watch anymore (Disco). Which I don't feel is fair. So I'm going to limit my answer to my usuals and say:
-Chakotay, to no one's surprise, even though yes I can 100% angst ship it when I'm in the right mood.
-Later-seasons B'Elanna, which I know is like throwing a live grenade into the room, I'm sorry!! Once they dropped off her interactions with Janeway in the early seasons, it went downhill for me. And you know I can't with P/T. But I do ship her with Seven! I contain multitudes. Forgive me.
-And, well, okay, as a treat for me I'll also say Jack Crusher. It's not even his fault. It's just the fact that he exists.
Thank you for the ask, @rowark!!

thinking about the poll about canon vs non-canon ships that didn't define terms, and the current fandom focus on things "going canon," so i made up a scale.
this is NOT a question about whether canon matters to what you ship (or matters at all), just how to define the phrase "canon ship."
many ships start low on the scale and slow burn their way up, so vote for the point when you would have called them "canon." i agonized over the order (especially #4-6) for a day and a half, but i went with the order in which i think joe random with a nielsen ratings box and no tumblr account would notice/call something a romantic relationship.

Scully's report: And so, my time in captivity forced me to grapple with the essential truth that in order to stop monsters, we must understand them. Yet who is to say that as we learn to empathize with monsters, we shall not become them?
Skinner: ...so, do you want some mental health leave, or...
Mulder's report: Though it remains unproven whether the past life regression I underwent is valid, are we not all a collection of past lives? Who is to say that the people we once were are not dead? Who is to say we are not haunted by the ghosts of all who we could have been? Or is the self merely an illusion, a thousand pieces of different shredded photographs that we have pasted together and convinced ourselves is whole?
Skinner, removing his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose: What...what is...I don't know what I'm supposed to do with this
