Ok Ken (and David). As much as I hate to make you guys famous or even respond to you directly. We all die one day and you're old so fuck it. Yea yea my 2013 performance at the Grammys was absolute shit. Technical difficulties, blah blah. Thanks for the reminder. Very much appreciated. Fuck that performance though. You think that's why I kept my work out of the Grammy process this year? Don't you think I would've wanted to play the show to 'redeem' myself if I felt that way? In reality, I actually wanted to participate in honoring Prince on the show but then I figured my best tribute to that man's legacy would be to continue to be myself out here and to be successful. Winning a TV award doesn't christen me successful. It took me some time to learn that. I bought all my masters back last year in the prime of my career, that's successful. Blonde sold a million plus without a label, that's successful. I am young, black, gifted and independent.. that's my tribute. I've actually been tuning into CBS around this time of year for a while to see who gets the top honor and you know what's really not 'great TV' guys? 1989 getting album of the year over To Pimp A Butterfly. Hands down one of the most 'faulty' TV moments I've seen. Believe the people. Believe the ones who'd rather watch select performances from your program on YouTube the day after because your show puts them to sleep. Use the old gramophone to actually listen bro, I'm one of the best alive. And if you're up for a discussion about the cultural bias and general nerve damage the show you produce suffers from then I'm all for it. Have a good night.

Album Review:

Tim Hecker - Love Streams

A esta altura del juego, podemos seguir llamando género de culto a lo que es el Ambient/Drone, artistas como Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, o Tangerine Dream dejaron su marca para moldear un estilo que se divide entre los que lo entienden, y los que no. Pero Tim Hecker es un capitulo importante en la historia de esta categoría. Desde sus comienzos, se veía a un artista con un descargo claro de sus visiones en el complejo campo de la música, y tanto en su debut, Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again (2001) como con el intenso Harmony in Ultraviolet (2006), entre otros, fueron declarados por seguidores del género, como piezas claves del nuevo movimiento, y considerando a Tim Hecker, como una de las caras más importantes.

Pero el éxito no terminó ahí, ya que faltaba un capitulo muy importante en la carrera del productor canadiense. Dos álbumes en seguidilla saldrían y romperían con cualquier estética ya conocida dentro de la esfera del Ambient, estoy hablando de Ravedeath, 1972 (2011), y Virgins (2013).

El primero se describe como el mejor cierre para ese estilo Fuzzy-Ambient que Hecker ya dominaba con perfección, en donde los estímulos y respuestas tanto mentales como espirituales corrían nuestro cuerpo con tanta facilidad, que era difícil poder evitarlos.

Pero es injusto hablar del increíble talento de Hecker sin hacer referencia de Virgins, su obra maestra por sobre las demas, y el material que me da el pie para hablar de Love Streams. Virgins es un distintivo del género, que cambió el juego de como iban marchando las cosas. En este álbum empezó a rondar la temática en el sonido de Tim Hecker, la estética clara, las sensaciones de un fin del mundo cercano.

Love Streams es una continuación de eso, pero más abstracto, bordeando lo inconcluso. Según un testamento de Hecker, este disco fue “creado mientras reflexionaba sobre ideas como la estética litúrgica de Yeezus y la voz trascendental en la era del auto-tune”, una frase bastante difícil de seguir, pero está en la interpretación de cada uno.  

Con sólo los tres primeros tracks de este material, ya nos encontramos con el contraste que Hecker le quiere dar al material. Obsidian Counterpoint y Bijie Dream son muestras de una influencia corriente hacía el sonido de Virgins, pero más fino, más cristalino, y ya es en Music of the Air donde nos encontramos con los vocales encargados por el nominado al Oscar Jóhann Jóhannsson, más el Icelandic Choir Ensemble.

El mejor ejemplo para demostrar el nuevo enfoque de Hecker a los tratamientos vocales, es en la angelical Castrati Stack, ese coro de voces te lleva a una experiencia lo más cercana a estar en el cielo, flotar dentro de ese espacio y seguir ese viaje interminable.

Hay algunas raresas en Love Streams, especialmente en la canción Violet Monumental II, ese loop hipnótico me recuerda mucho a lo que Oneohtrix Point Never elaboró en Replica (2011), lo cual no sería una sorpresa ya que Tim Hecker y Daniel Lopatin trabajaron juntos en un proyecto llamado Instrumental Tourist (2012).

A claras, y razonando con el material, puedo decir que Love Streams se divide en dos. La primera mitad, es una obra plenamente abstracta que cruza la confusión en base a lo que trato de interpretar, porque no importa cuantas veces lo escuche, el entendimiento no se plasma con las intenciones, los mensajes no son claros, es sólo un montón de significantes, y las sensaciones se vuelven inconclusas.

El final del material se ve un poco más claro, canciones como Voice Crack y Black Phase son grandes rasgos de la nueva intención de Tim Hecker, en este caso suenan más correspondiente a lo que ya conocemos de él, una puesta que comprende más a su tarea.

Si bien cada material de Tim Hecker tarda en hacer click, Love Streams sigue claramente otra cosa. El disco se presenta como algo raro, no necesariamente diferente, pero descifrar distintos aspectos, se hizo bastante complejo. No es tan temático como Virgins, ni tampoco desborda emociones como en Ravedeath, 1972, sino que es una pieza confusa, que hace que meternos en la cabeza de Tim Hecker, se haga cada vez más complicado.

Album Review:

Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.

Nosotros los humanos, todavía no somos capaces de ver a través del futuro, pero sí tenemos intuiciones, y una intuición clara, era la idea de que Kendrick Lamar algo se tenía guardado para éste año, ¿cómo llegamos a pensar eso? fácil, Kendrick en presentaciones en vivo, tanto de su gira personal, como en programas de televisión, estrenaba canciones con el seudónimo de “Untitled” del cual no sabíamos nada. Obviamente después de tal acontecimiento, nos pusimos expectantes como cuando un perro espera a que le tiren su pelotita.

Siguiendo la tendencia de “discos sorpresa”, Kendrick en el “#NewMusicFriday” de cada semana, nos debela el secreto, con la presentación de untitled unmastered., un EP de 34 minutos que cuenta con canciones que fueron escritas en el proceso de formación de su último trabajo, el ya histórico To Pimp A Butterfly.

Lo que podemos encontrar en este “nuevo” proyecto, son producciones que no entraron en TPAB. Para explicarlo con un ejemplo, sería lo que Radiohead hizo con Kid A y Amnesiac. 

El sonido guarda ese espíritu Jazz/Funk Rap y Conceptual Hip Hop que Kendrick resalta con exquisitez, respaldado de ese escritura inteligente al describir situaciones e ideales en sano juicio, no me quiero meter tan profundo en torno al tema de las letras, porque la base está en la interpretación, sólo puedo decir que Kendrick en algunas canciones habla de sexo, dinero en torno a la gente blanca y su éxito, y hasta del día que nosotros llamamos como “juicio final”. Sinceramente toma mucho tiempo entender todos los mensajes y expresiones, pero no sólo se queden con eso.

A pesar de ser una especie de B-sides, el disco es magnifico, y sorprende que algunas canciones no hayan entrado en TPAB, porque hubieran encajado sin ningún problema, las letras siguen siendo excelentes, el sonido a pesar de no estar bien terminado sigue siendo estelar, tanto que realmente sorprende que hasta ese pequeño bollo de canciones apartadas sean tan buenas, lo que demuestra un talento inigualable, y creo que la idea de lanzar este tipo de proyecto, fue para de algún modo darle un cierre a éste ciclo, pero agradecemos plenamente a Kendrick Lamar por dejar escapar estas canciones que tanto valió la pena escuchar.

Album Review:

Kanye West - The Life of Pablo

Después de muchas idas y vueltas, al fin tenemos un nuevo álbum de Kanye West. Todos conocemos la historia, cuatro títulos distintos, diferentes tracklists, Yeezy Season, y un Kanye que usó su Twitter como pieza de promo, para contar un poco de qué se trataba su nuevo proyecto. 

Ahora, lo que tenemos aquí, es otro material egocéntrico, inmaduro, polémico, y sarcásticamente ridículo por parte de Kanye. Pero hey, no lo digo en el mal sentido de la palabra, es más, son aspectos tan naturales en cada álbum de Kanye, que ya no sorprende. Así que... para empezar, “Ye” sigue circulando en su misma órbita.

Después de aclarar los primeros aspectos y sensaciones sobre The Life of Pablo (titulo en referencia a Pablo Picasso) será mejor hablar del porqué este material es lo que es: una verdadera obra de grandeza.

Para empezar, podemos hablar del hermoso comienzo, titulado Ultralight Beam, me siento obligado a hacer una mención de este track, no es necesario hablar mucho sobre esta canción, pero si alguna vez se preguntaron cómo suena un buen Gospel, sólo diríjanse a este track. Kanye había twitteado que éste material sería un “gospel album”, pero después nos dimos cuenta que eso no era verdad, es sólo una porción. Mis impresiones con el resto del material, me dejaban la sensación de estar escuchando algo parecido a un mixtape, por el hecho de desigualdad de índole entre una canción y otra, se notaba una clara diferencia entre canciones cómo Feedback y Freestyle 4 con canciones muy bien producidas cómo Wolves o No More Parties in LA, y la paradoja es que algunas de estas canciones fueron agregadas a último momento, lo cual deja a claras que tal vez, fueron apuradas, pero quien sabe.

En base a la lingüística, bueno, ya todos conocemos la relación entre Kanye y sus letras, pero la cosa parecían dar un giro de página en relación a ese tema. Hay dos canciones que Kanye estrenó antes de que el material salga a luz, que fueron Real Friends y No More Parties in LA. Lo que pasó con estas dos canciones, es que Kanye hizo un gran trabajo en lo que son los versos, hay una frase que resume un poco la cuestión, y es cuendo Kanye dice “...sé que muchos fanáticos pensaron que nunca iba a volver a rapear así...”. Sus fanáticos ya exclamaban la frase “The Ye is back” - en base a sus dos primeros discos -. Kanye parecía revivir viejas epocas, pero creo que esas dos canciones son una respuesta a acusaciones sobre su nuevo estilo de componer, dejando en claro que sí él cambia, es por decisión exclusiva de Kanye, y no porque perdió el toque.

Desgraciadamente el resto del material no guarda esa serenidad en las letras, el resto sigue con esa tendencia a ridiculizar distintos aspectos, en forma de tonada sería, o de alguien que le gusta sobrepasar la situación, pero les voy a ser sinceros, si nunca me importó lo que Kanye diga en sus canciones, menos lo voy a hacer ahora. Si no se toman tan en serio, o entran mucho en las letras, seguro disfrutaran más el material... creo.

La segunda mitad de The Life of Pablo es sin duda otra cosa, aquí las participaciones son más destacadas - sacando el tema de la colaboración de artistas de gran peso como Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, o The Weeknd -. Todos hacen un excelente rol, hasta Chris Bronw, del cual pensé que nunca iba a escuchar, hizo una genial introducción. Y no dejemos pasar ese estelar cierre, Fade es ardiente, ese synthy-house-beat prende fuego a cualquier estéreo que lo haga zumbar.

Kanye West se describe a él mismo como un Pablo Picasso de la modernidad, y relaciona a The Life of Pablo como una de sus pinturas, pero no creo que necesariamente sea una obra de Picasso, más bien lo veo como una pintura de Jackson Pollock, en base a la variedad de abstracción en el material, pero el tema es que, Kanye no es Picasso, Kanye no es Pollock, Kanye es Kanye, es sólo Kanye.

URGENT: STRAIGHT MALE ALLIES NEEDED TO SHUT DOWN LEGAL RAPE “INTERNATIONAL MEETING”

This coming Saturday, February 6, at 8pm local time, followers of “Roosh V”- noted sexist, racist, homophobic, and overall horrible monster (not a human being)- will be holding secret meetings to rally for rape to be legalized. You didn’t read this wrong THEY WANT RAPE TO BE LEGALIZED. 

This shit is dangerous af, and as they have barred anyone who isn’t a cis male or straight, so we need all our white male allies to gather and shut this shit down. If you are a straight man of colour, please be careful. Even though the website says the meeting is for straight men of all races, the Roosh V following has also been known to be very racist and xenophobic.

Here is how the meeting will take place, as according to their website (I’m not going to link it because it does not deserve any hits, but all the info here is authentic- you may google and see for yourself):

We will have 165 meetings in 43 countries for our international meetup day on February 6, 2016 at 8PM local time. Hosts have been instructed to wait at the meeting point from 8:00-8:20pm before moving on to the final location. If you arrive at the meeting point at 8:21pm, you will miss the meetup. Arriving on time within the window is absolutely paramount.

To identify your fellow tribesmen, ask the following question to a man you suspect is there for the meetup: “Do you know where I can find a pet shop?” If you are asked this question, answer in the affirmative: “Yes, it’s right here.” You can then introduce yourself and get details about where to proceed at 8:20. If you ask someone for the pet shop and they appear confused or actually try to direct you to a real pet shop, they’re not there for the meetup.

Hay tantas razones pare darle una oportunidad a cualquier cosa que haga Savages, desde su debut Silence Yourself, la banda marcó una nueva etapa a lo que son las “girls bands”, por el hecho de que ellas tenían algo distinto, esa esencia sediciosa pero autentica, que más que nada resaltaba por ese estilo propio de expresar sensaciones (si se puede llamar así) con la música. Este nuevo material es parecido a su antecesor, pero se siente más real, o humano; se puede decir que es un álbum que ronda con la temática de las relaciones amorosas, o la palabra en sí misma, pero no necesariamente del amor en su máxima expresión, sino de aquellas situaciones donde el amarse a sí mismo es la mejor opción, y desafiar respectivas situaciones sea la salida más correspondiente. El tema del feminismo siempre fue una característica de la banda, pero en éste material me doy cuenta, que no sólo forma parte de un estilo, sino que forma parte de una identidad, que relaciona a Savages como punto principal en su distinción, como lo desarrolla en gran mayoría de sus letras. El mix entre guitarra, bajo y batería sigue siendo un gran fuerte en su sonido, pero en este material, parece sonar un poco más oscuro, o más intenso, especialmente en canciones como Adore, o Mechanics, donde la sensación experimenta un costado más lúgubre, Savages sin dudas hizo un genial trabajo en lo que es la atmósfera, dejando como anillo al dedo el contraste con relación al canto de su vocera. Éste es otro gran trabajo por parte de estas cuatro mujeres, que siguen demostrando lo que pueden hacer, sin que nadie las detenga, siempre con la frente en alto, porque queda claro... que nada las puede callar.

Traté, traté, traté de ser lo más original posible, y no ir a lo más obvio, pero no puedo mentirme a mi mismo, To Pimp a Butterfly es sin dudas el mejor álbum del año, y mi álbum favorito de este 2015. Kendrick Lamar sigue haciendo historia, cuando se pensaba que era imposible hacer algo mejor o tan bueno como good kid, m.A.A.d. city, reaparece con un álbum que rompe con las expectativas de todos, este material es oro puro, es historia recién escrita, es algo que se recordará por años y años, y sin exagerar, puedo decir que éste álbum es: 

El mejor álbum de la década. 

El mejor álbum Hip Hop de los últimos 20 años. 

Uno de los 5 mejores álbumes Hip Hop de toda la historia. 

Uno de los 50 mejores discos de todos los tiempos. 

El concepto de To Pimp a Butterfly es claro reflejo de la inteligencia de Kendrick a la hora de elaborar música, sus letras, sus mensajes, sus técnicas, son diferentes de cualquier otro artista, entonces ¿se puede decir que Kendrick Lamar es un innovador en la materia? bueno, de eso no tengan dudas.

Defendí este álbum apenas salió, frente a un ola de malas criticas, y hoy puedo decir, que tuve razón, Art Angels es una joya, de esos materiales imposibles de dejar, lo escuché repetidas y repetidas veces, y no podía sacármelo de la cabeza. El pasaje que tuvo Grimes, de querer hacer algo más Pop, a pesar de las negativas, fue lo que hizo de este material algo realmente excelente, porque cada una de las 14 canciones que lo conforman, son tan pegadizas como la mierda, es un hit, tras hit, tras hit.

Black Emperor no se renueva, y en esa decisión encuentra el camino correcto, el factor emocional sigue ahí, pero está vez con un sonido más fornido, semejante a lo que viene haciendo en el último tiempo, sin palabras lo dicen todo, y este material sigue siendo registro de eso.
